Abstract:The actual problem of the possibility of using the equations of state for the gas phase of natural gas at temperatures below 250 K is considered. To solve it, the compressibility coefficients of natural gas obtained experimentally with high accuracy are required. The technique was developed and experimental study was carried out of compressibility factor aiming expanding temperature range of the state equations GERG-2004 and AGA8-DC92. The proposed technique is based on the fact that to assess the applicability of the equation of state, it is sufficient to obtain the relative value of the compressibility coefficient and not to determine its absolute value. The technique does not require complex equipment and provides high accuracy. The technique was tested on nitrogen, argon, air and methane. Uncertainty of determination of the compressibility factor is not greater than 0.1 %. For two different compositions of natural gas, obtained experimental data were demonstrated that the equations of state GERG-2004 and AGA8-92DC provide uncertainty of the calculation of the compressibility coefficient within 0.1 % in the temperature range from 220 K to 250 K and pressure below 5 MPa.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the analysis of compressibility factor calculation methods in the temperature range from 220 to 250 K. The AGA8-92DC (GOST 30319.2- 96), AGA8 Report Detail (GOST 30319.3-2015), GERG-2004/2008, NX19, GERG-91, ISO 20765-1 (GOST R 8.662-2009), GSSSD MR 118-05 (moderately compressed gas mixtures) and GSSSD MR 113-03 (Wet Oil Gas) methods are experimentally tested. Deviations of experimental data and calculated values of compressibility coefficient determined by the specified methods are shown. It is found out that the deviation of the calculated values of the compressibility factor according to the AGA8-92DC, AGA8 Report 1 Detail, GERG-2004/2008, ISO 20765-1 (GOST R 8.662-2009), GSSSD MR 13-03 methods from the experimental ones does not exceed 0,1 %. This fact confirms the possibility of using these methods in the temperature range from 220 to 250 K. The results obtained in the framework of this study are highly significant for flow metering, and in particular, provide an increase in the accuracy of the procedure for bringing the volume of natural gas to standard conditions at low temperatures.

Abstract:The hydrogen gas compressibility factor is a key parameter when the pressure temperature method is used to measure hydrogen fuel consumption. Based on the data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Chemistry WebBooks, a standardized equation for hydrogen gas compressibility factor based on pressure and temperature dependent terms is developed by means of polynomial fitting. The equation agrees with the NIST density data to within 0.01% from 220 K to 500 K with pressures from 0.1 MPa to 100 MPa, and to within 0.003% from 270 K to 500 K with pressures from 10 MPa to 100 MPa, which has higher accuracy compared with the Lemmon equation. Experimental research shows that the hydrogen consumptions calculated by using the proposed equation are in good consistency with the results measured by the fiowmeter. Abstract:Isobaric heat capacity of pressurized liquid trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene [R1234ze(E)] was measured by scanning calorimetry. The experimental system basically consists of a Calvet calorimeter (Setaram C80) and a pressure balance unit. A total of 95 data points were obtained at temperatures from 310.15 to 365.15 K and pressures up to 5.5 MPa. An empirical equation was used to correlate the experimental data with an average absolute percentage deviation of 0.18 %. Besides, a comparison was carried out between present data and literature data and three latest fundamental equations of state. Finally, saturated liquid heat capacity of R1234ze(E) was also investigated in this paper.

Abstract:The increasing coupling between natural gas and electricity systems by gas-fired generation units brings new challenges to system analysis, such as pressure variations due to consumption perturbations of generation units. The emerging issues require revolutionary modeling and analysis techniques. This paper proposes a novel model to quantify gas pressure variations due to gas-fired power unit ramping and the impact of constraints from natural gas pressure change on ramp rates of gas-fired plants. By utilizing Laplace transform to resolve the governing equations of gas networks, the proposed model can significantly reduce modeling complexity and computational burden. The dynamic behaviors in time scale in s-domain and spatial partial differential equations are transformed into finite difference equations. By introducing the concept of transfer matrices, the relation between states at each node of gas systems can be expressed by transfer parameter matrices. Additionally, a simplified model is introduced to simply the analysis. The explicit expressions of nodal pressure variations in response to demand change are very convenient for analyzing system dynamic performance under disturbances, identifying the most influential factors. The new models are extensively demonstrated on three natural gas networks and benchmarked with traditional simulation approaches. Results illustrate that they produce very close results with the simulation approach, particularly when gas pipelines are long and enter steady states.
Optimal Calculation Method of the Equation SGERG-88 for Compression Factor of Natural Gas

Abstract:The nature gas compression factor calculation method and diagram with high accuracy are described by the SGERG-88 equation in national standard GB/T 17747.3-1999. The compression factor algorithm procedure was developed on PC and the calculation accuracy had been checked with the data samples in the standard. The result shows that double floating data is needed to ensure the accuracy, and flow meters can not use the algorithm directly since the running time of the algorithm was too long. The optimal contents which were obtained by analyzing and debugging on PC, are to change the loop iteration control error from 10-6 to 10-5 in the middle calculation part and improve the method of calculating of Moore's heat HCH. The tests show that optimized algorithm was 99% reduction in the number of cycles, and the calculation error was 0.003%. The optimized algorithm had been tested on the flow meter hardware platform based on 32 bit micro processor.

Abstract:In city gate stations (CGS) experimental facilities are currently employed to specify natural gas compositions and subsequently calculate its density. Then, natural gas mass flow rate is calculated by employing an Ultrasonic Flow Meter (UFM), and a volume corrector to convert the given value to its equivalent in standard conditions. As online measurement of natural gas compositions is a costly and difficult task, this study presents an innovative method for natural gas mass flow metering in CGSs. In this method, a novel correlation, which is a functional of only three simple measurable variables i.e. temperature, pressure and sound speed, is presented for calculating natural gas molecular weight, and then, employing the authentic equations of state (EOS) of AGA8 for natural gas, its density could be calculated. The correlation was developed based on curve fitting and data mining approaches on a large database associated with four different natural gas fields of Iran and its accuracy was validated with available experimental data for seven other Iran's natural gas fields and two more gases with sample compositions. Each database in correlation development and validation stage (13 databases altogether) consists of 17,000 sound speed values in all possible temperature and pressure ranges in CGSs after expansion process. Mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) methods are used to validate the correlation accuracy and compare its performance with the correlation presented previously for the same objective. The evaluation results prove high prediction accuracy for the presented correlation and its superiority comparing to the previous work.

Abstract:The densities of two ternary mixtures (0.900 carbon dioxide + 0.050 nitrogen + 0.050 argon and 0.950 carbon dioxide + 0.040 nitrogen + 0.010 argon in mole fraction) were measured at temperatures from (323.15 to 423.15) K with pressures from (3 to 31) MPa using a single-sinker magnetic suspension densimeter. The expanded measurement uncertainties (k = 2) were 35 mK for temperature, 3.4 kPa for pressure, and 0.033 % for density. Mixture samples were prepared gravimetrically with the expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in composition 0.001 mole fraction. With all of the measurement and composition effects considered, the expanded combined uncertainty (k = 2) in the density determination was generally within 0.2 % except at thermal states at the vicinity of the critical point near the Widom line. Relative deviations of the experimental data from the GERG-2008 equation of state (EOS), a Helmholtz energy model for natural gas mixtures, and from the EOS-CG, another new Helmholtz energy model for humid gases and fluid mixtures relevant for carbon capture and storage, were within 0.6 % for both mixtures. The relative deviation reached a maximum along the isotherm at the thermal state at the vicinity of the critical point near the Widom line.

When dealing with hydrogen-enriched natural gas mixtures, the performance of the reference equations of state habitually used for natural gas should be validated by using high-precision experimental thermophysical data from multicomponent reference mixtures prepared with the lowest possible uncertainty in composition. In this work, we present experimental density data for an 11-compound high-calorific (hydrogen-free) natural gas mixture and for two derived hydrogen-enriched natural gas mixtures prepared by adding (10 and 20) mol-% of hydrogen to the original standard natural gas mixture. The three mixtures were prepared gravimetrically according to ISO 6142-1 for maximum precision in their composition and thus qualify for reference materials. A single-sinker densimeter was used to determine the density of the mixtures from (250-350) K and up to 20 MPa. The experimental density results of this work have been compared to the densities calculated by three different reference equations of state for natural gas related mixtures: the AGA8-DC92 EoS, the GERG-2008 EoS, and an improved version of the GERG-2008 EoS. While relative deviations of the experimental density data for the hydrogen-free natural gas mixture are always within the claimed uncertainty of the three considered equations of state, larger deviations can be observed for the hydrogen-enriched natural gas mixtures from any of the three equations of state, especially for the lowest temperature and the highest pressures.

Abstract:The GERG-2008 equation of state is the approved ISO standard (ISO 20765-2) for the calculation of thermophysical properties of natural gas mixtures. The composition of natural gas can vary considerably due to the diversity of origin. Further diversification was generated by adding hydrogen, biogas, or other non-conventional energy gases. In this work, high-precision experimental ($p$, $\rho$, $T$) data for two gravimetrically prepared synthetic natural gas mixtures are reported. One mixture resembled a conventional natural gas of 11 components (11 M) with a nominal mixture composition (amount-of-substance fraction) of 0.8845 for methane as the matrix compound. The other mixture was a 13-component hydrogen-enriched natural gas with a low calorific value featuring a nominal composition of 0.7885 for methane. Density measurements were performed in an isothermal operational mode at temperatures between 260 and 350 K and at pressures up to 20 MPa by using a single-sinker densimeter with magnetic suspension coupling. The data were compared with the corresponding densities calculated from both GERG-2008 and AGA8-DC92 equations of state to test their performance on real mixtures. The average absolute deviation from GERG-2008 (AGA8-DC92) is 0.027% (0.078%) for 11 M and 0.095% (0.062%) for the 13-component $H_{2}$-enriched mixture, respectively. The corresponding maximum relative deviation from GERG-2008 (AGA8-DC92) amounts to 0.095% (0.127%) for 11 M and 0.291% (0.193%) for the $H_{2}$-enriched mixture.

Abstract:A single-sinker densimeter was built to specifically investigate the (p,rho,T,x) behavior of fluid mixtures relevant for carbon capture and storage (CCS). Due to the use of a magnetic-suspension coupling, the densimeter enables measurements over the temperature range from (273.15 to 423.15) K with pressures up to 35 MPa. A comprehensive analysis of the experimental uncertainties was undertaken. The expanded uncertainties (k = 2) are 35 mK for temperature, 3.39 kPa for pressure, and 0.033% for density determination. The apparatus was used for measurements on the binary systems (nitrogen + carbon dioxide) and (argon + carbon dioxide). The compositions for both systems were (0.05 and 0.01) mole fraction carbon dioxide. Density measurements were carried out at temperatures from (298.15 to 423.15) K with pressures from (11 to 31) MPa. The relative combined expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in density was 0.15% for the (nitrogen + carbon dioxide) mixtures and 0.12% for the (argon + carbon dioxide) mixtures. A major contribution to this uncertainty emerged from the uncertainty in the gas mixture composition. The new experimental data were compared to the GERG-2008 equation of state (EOS) for natural-gas mixtures as implemented in the NIST REFPROP database and to the EOS-CG, another new Helmholtz energy model for CCS mixtures as implemented in the TREND software package of Ruhr-University Bochum. Relative deviations were mostly within 0.5%. The agreement of the new density values with the only available literature data closest to the composition range under study was better than 0.1%. Evaluation method of the energy conversion efficiency of coal gasification and related applications

Abstract:Traditional gasification parameters, such as cold gas efficiency, hot gas efficiency, or thermal efficiency, only evaluate the heat energy utilisation efficiency of gasifiers and do not take into account the gasification processes expending electricity and other types of energies. Therefore, the energy conversion efficiency cannot be assessed using these parameters. The calculation process on the energy conversion efficiency of underground coal gasification (UCG) is the basis for obtaining quantitative data of carbon emission reduction and establishing the carbon trading methodology of UCG. Moreover, the energy conversion efficiency both for surface coal gasification and UCG is a key research topic because it directly affects the economic and environmental benefits of gasification projects. This study proposed that two parameters, the integrated gasification efficiency (hcom) and the hot gas integrated gasification efficiency ( ), should be included into the coal gasification parameters and used to evaluate the energy conversion efficiency of coal gasification. In addition, the calculation methods of these two parameters for both surface gasification and UCG were established. Using the method, hcom and , of the UCG and Texaco gasification under the same scale was compared and that of various UCG processes was calculated. The results proved the necessity and reasonability of the two parameters and suggested that a certain amount of CO2 was favourable to improve hcom and of UCG. However, a certain amount of pure O2 can improve hcom of UCG without direct influences on . Under the condition of each process, to maximise hcom and , there must be an optimal steam (CO2) to O2 rate. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The results prove the necessity and reasonability of hcom and proposed by this paper to evaluate the energy conversion efficiency of gasification processes. Abstract:Abstract The topic of this paper concerns energy-related carbon dioxide emission factors from the combustion of gaseous methane fuels. It is a very current subject, as methane fuels, mainly of fossil origin, are one of the primary energy carriers used in industrial and municipal applications for energy purposes. Consequently, the emitted carbon dioxide contributes to the intensification of the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. The problem of the quantities characterising emissions from the combustion of methane fuels is complicated by the diversity of these fuels. This paper presents background information on the gaseous hydrocarbon fuels and the composition of the main types of natural gas. The structure of natural gas consumption in Poland, depending on the sectors of application for particular types of natural gas, is presented. On the basis of the existing data, aggregated energy-related carbon dioxide emission factors were estimated and analysed. The analysis was carried out for high-methane natural gas (HM), colliery gas (CG) and nitrified natural gas (N)—for the years 1988–2021. Trends in fuel consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide emission factors were determined for the years 1988–2021.
Improvement of Gas Compressibility Factor and Bottom-Hole Pressure Calculation Method for HTHP Reservoirs: A Field Case in Junggar Basin, China

Abstract:Gas reservoirs discovered in the southern margin of the Junggar Basin generally have high temperatures (up to 172.22 °C) and high pressures (up to 171.74 MPa). If using the PVT laboratory to get the gas compressibility factor, data from the laboratory are so little that it will not satisfy the demands of reservoir engineering calculations. There are many empirical correlations for calculating the Z-factor; however, these correlations give large errors at high gas reservoir pressures. The errors in estimating the Z-factor will lead to large errors in estimating all the other gas properties such as gas formation volume factor, gas compressibility, and gas in place. In this paper, a new accurate Z-factor correlation has been developed based on PVT data by correcting the high-pressure part of the most commonly used Dranchuk-Purvis-Robinson Correlation. Multivariate nonlinear regression is used to establish the independent variable function of pseudo-critical temperatures and pressures. By comparing it with the PVT data, the DPR correlation is continuously corrected to be suitable for ultra-deep gas reservoirs with HTHP. The new correlation can be used to determine the Z-factor at any pressure range, especially for high pressures, and the error is less than 1% compared to the PVT data. Then, based on the corrected Z-factor, the Cullender-Smith method is used to calculate the bottom hole pressure in the middle of the reservoir. Finally, the Z-factor under reservoir conditions of well H2 is predicted and the Z-factor chart at different temperatures is provided.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate, as a highly efficient and clean energy source, has garnered significant attention from both developed and energy-deficient nations. However, to achieve industrial application, several technical challenges must be addressed, including resource exploration, spatial positioning, resource assessment, economic production evaluation, and climate change impact assessment. Currently, our exploration and evaluation system for gas hydrate resources remains immature. This study aims to determine the probability distribution of effective thickness, porosity, and saturation of natural gas hydrate resource parameters in the study area and their variations. Utilizing probability statistics theory, we calculated specific values for all gas hydrate resource parameters from open-source data of 14 exploration well locations, determined their probability distributions, and conducted distribution detection to identify specific distributions. Data analysis was performed using linear graphs and bar charts to summarize patterns. Subsequently, by applying the mathematical formula Q = A×Z×∅×S×E, we categorized natural gas hydrate resource parameters, calculated gas hydrate resources at each effective depth, determined the probability distribution of each obtained data point, and ultimately solved for the total natural gas hydrate resources, yielding a final solution of 31875763695.08.

Abstract:Based on the data provided by Sinopec Tianjin LNG Co., Ltd., a similation model for liquid flow in LNG tanks was established. A 1:1 three-dimensional geometric model was built through Geometry component. Adaptive grids were constucted using Mesh component. The number of grids for liquid outlet and inlet was increased. Model conditions, physical parameters, boundary conditions, and solution conditions were set through Fluent, and calculations were carried out. The results were post-processed through the Results component, and were analyzed to verify the effectiveness of the model. Focusing on the density measurement, a series of experiments were designed by dividing different working conditions, such as standing, single inlet, single outlet, and compound situations. According to the experimental results, we found that a six-order function can be used to fit the density distribution under different working conditions. The results showed that the employed density measurement technique by Sinopec Tianjin LNG Co., Ltd. meets industrial requirements.
Thermodynamic analysis of natural gas/hydrogen-fueled compressed air energy storage system

Abstract:In this paper, a diabatic compressed air energy storage system fueled by a natural gas/hydrogen mixture that integrates heating and power generation is proposed. A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis has been conducted to identify the key factors influencing system performance and elucidate the detailed formation and distribution patterns of irreversible losses when utilizing a hydrogen-natural gas blend as fuel in the proposed system. The research results indicate that increasing the hydrogen blending ratio from 0.5 to 1 lead to greater enhancements in roundtrip efficiency (∼1.08% vs. ∼0.33%), exergy efficiency (∼3.88% vs. ∼1.15%), and energy density (∼1.24% vs. ∼0.42%) compared to an increase from 0 to 0.5. The combustor suffers the largest exergy destruction proportion, with a notable reduction in exergy destruction achieved through increased hydrogen blending. System performance benefits significantly from higher combustor outlet temperatures and expansion ratios at various hydrogen blending ratios. The rate of change in exergy efficiency (∼42.76% vs. ∼83.17%) and energy density (∼58.83%) demonstrates an inverse correlation with the varied parameters (1100–1500K, 4–8), except for the rate of change in energy density (∼6.76%), which displays a positive relationship with the combustor outlet temperature. Notably, a significant decrease in the rate of change in roundtrip efficiency (∼1.87% vs. ∼6.64%) is observed within a specific parameter range (1400–1500K, 5–6). Sensitivity analysis identifies the combustor outlet temperature as the most influential factor in enhancing system performance, consistently showing positive effects of the hydrogen blending ratio.

Abstract:The PVT properties of the (H-2 + CO2) mixtures and the (H-2 + CO2 + CH4) mixtures in the supercritical region of water are significant for making full use of the gas mixtures in the coal and supercritical water gasification. We report PVT measurements of the (0.6005 H-2 + 0.3995 CO2), (0.6992 H-2 + 0.3008 CO2), and (0.6026 H-2 + 0.1948 CO2 + 0.2026 CH4) mixtures (all in mole fractions) at temperature 673 K and pressures of (0.5 to 25) MPa, measured by a modified Burnett method. The upper bounds of the expanded uncertainties at 95% confidence are 0.2 K for temperature, 0.015.rho for pressure, and 0.008.rho for density. The density data were compared with those predicted using the GERG-2008 equation of state. The deviations between the calculated and experimental data are not more than 0.021.rho. Furthermore, the densities were found in accordance with the weighted average of the components' existing equations of state using their mole fractions within 0.0076.rho for all of the mixtures in this work. The second and third virial coefficients were determined at temperature 673 K for hydrogen and all of the mixtures investigated.
Prospects for the Development of Reference Materials of the Wobbe Index

Abstract:The thermophysical properties of gaseous fuel, including the calorific value and the Wobbe index, are one of its main properties for industrial use. The correctness of measurements of the volumetric energy of gas combustion is currently ensured by using sets of certified reference materials of the lowest volumetric energy of combustion based on pure gases: hydrogen, methane, ethane and propane GSO 11662–2020 / GSO 11665–2020 and gaseous mixtures GSO 11904–2022 / GSO 11907–2022 with metrological traceability to GET 16–2018. However, it becomes necessary to measure the gas relative density to air with established traceability to GET 18–2014 when determining the Wobbe index. The purpose of this research is to improve the accuracy of the pycnometer method for measuring the density of gases for further development and creation of metrological assurance in the field of measuring the Wobbe index. In the course of the research, an analysis of existing methods for determining the gas density was performed, as a result of which the pycnometer method set forth in GOST 17310–2002, GOST 34721–2021 was taken as the basis for the developed method. The uncertainty budget of gas density measurements was estimated using the pycnometer method. It has been established that the mass determination of the gas under study makes the greatest contribution to the total uncertainty. It was decided to increase the internal volume of the pycnometer and use a modified method for determining its volume to minimize the uncertainty. An imitator of a pycnometer with an increased volume was manufactured in an original design to solve the task of developing a modified pycnometer method for measuring the gas density. A gravimetrically produced gaseous mixture of the following composition was chosen for testing the developed method: CO 2 – 40.22 mol. %, CH 4 – rest. The theoretical significance of the results obtained lies in approbation of a modified pycnometer method to improve the measurement accuracy of such a gaseous fuel property as the Wobbe index. In the process of developing a modified pycnometer method, the measurement algorithm was tested, the density values of the studied gas were obtained, and the uncertainty budget of density measurements was estimated. The practical significance of the results of this research will expand the possibility of establishing metrological characteristics during the metrological assurance of Wobbe index analyzers, as well as apply the developed method in future accuracy control of the measurement results of the gas relative density to air.
