Abstract:This study provides a comprehensive review of the significant elements in sustainable transportation systems with shared mobility. The main subsets of shared mobility includes ridesharing, carsharing, shared micromobility, on-demand ride services, and shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs). This paper revisits the related studies in the last decade since shared mobility spread via the emergence of smartphones and numerous applications. A framework is proposed to describe the shared mobility systems and understand the interactions among various elements in shared mobility systems, such as the supply and demand relationship between users and enterprises. Based on this framework, many fundamental research problems of shared mobility systems are summarized to cover travel behavior, enterprise supply, government policy, and sustainability. With the sustainability theme of shared mobility, we review the literature on the impacts of shared mobility on transportation sustainability. It is discovered that shared mobility has many advantages and improves urban transportation systems in many aspects, but these benefits vary with travel behavior and enterprise supply. We also discuss how government policies regulate travel behavior and enterprise supply in the sustainable development of urban transportation systems.

Abstract:The emergence of dynamic rerouting in multi-modal transportation networks has emerged as a crucial area in operations research, revolutionizing routine optimization. The review study analyzes multiple research publications on algorithms and techniques related to dynamic rerouting to give a thorough summary of the state of research in this field and provide future suggestions. The research paper explains the importance of dynamic rerouting in modern transportation systems and recognizes its critical role in tackling issues like accidents, traffic congestion, and infrastructure constraints. In addition, the review examines the development of dynamic rerouting techniques by examining several studies to uncover the theoretical foundation, technological developments, and effects of the practices on various forms of transportation. The paper emphasizes the potential of technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data in transforming routing efficiencies. Further, the review presents specific difficulties and best practices for each mode of transportation, highlighting the many uses of dynamic rerouting in air, sea, rail, and road transportation. The review also digs deeper into the integration barriers common in multi-modal networks, highlighting successful case studies that overcome these obstacles as well as strategic approaches and regulatory modifications. Lastly, the research paper assesses the impact of dynamic rerouting on urban development, sustainability, and potential directions for future research such as the integration of large language models. Abstract:Railway operations are highly susceptible to delays and disruptions caused by various factors, such as technical issues, operational inefficiencies, and unforeseen events. To counter these delays and ensure efficient railway operations during real-time management, several rescheduling approaches can be implemented. Among these approaches, passenger-oriented rescheduling considers train rescheduling while taking passenger data into account, as opposed to operation-oriented rescheduling. This paper provides an overview of the former group of approaches. Particular focus is put on different ways passenger data is exploited to optimize rescheduling and on the measures, the approaches can decide on. The rescheduling measures typically considered vary from decisions on maintaining transfers, canceling trains, adding emergency trains, changing routes and orders of trains, skipping or adding stops at stations, short-turning trains, applying speed control, and modifying rolling stock compositions. In this regard, the paper presents a comprehensive analysis of real-time rescheduling approaches adopted in both the conventional railway and urban rail transit and points out possible directions for further research in the field.

Abstract:With new subway lines going into operation, the passenger flow distribution of urban rail transit networks have new characteristics. This paper presents Beijing rail transit as an example. According to different methods of new lines connecting to the existing network, selecting urban trunk line, suburban line and loop line, analyzing the changes of passenger flow characteristics caused by the opening of each kind of new line from several aspects: scale of network traffic, passenger volume of line, passenger flow of transfer station and passenger flow of key section. And summing up general laws of different types of new line’s impact on passenger flow on the basis of empirical analysis. It provides reference for optimizing and coordinating operation organization between the new line and existing lines.

Abstract:The construction of a new generation of smart cities puts forward higher requirements for the digitization and intelligence of subway tunnel engineering. Digital twin technology has shown great potential in high-fidelity modeling, virtual–real mapping, and decision support based on data analysis, but its research is still in its infancy. To this end, this paper first discusses in depth the inherent complexity and safety risks of subway tunnel construction and emphasizes the significant advantages of digital twin technology compared with traditional technology. Then, by summarizing the existing concepts, this paper proposes a specific explanation of DT applicable to subway tunnel engineering. In order to deeply analyze the potential of digital twin technology in subway tunnel engineering, this paper first conducts a bibliometric analysis and organizes the relevant research directions in recent years based on a visual map. Then, the application of DT in the field of subway tunnel engineering is discussed, including the modeling method of the subway digital twin, intelligent management of the construction process, safety guarantee, operation and maintenance, and resource optimization of traffic facilities in subway stations. Finally, this paper discusses the prospects and gaps of digital twin technology in theoretical and practical applications, aiming to promote the practical application of this technology in subway tunnel engineering. Through the summary and prospect of the existing research, this paper provides a valuable reference for future research directions and practical applications.

Abstract:This study investigates the dynamics of passenger satisfaction and sustainable urban mobility within the context of multimodal railway hubs, focusing on travel behaviors at major stations in China. Against the backdrop of rapid urbanization and the nation's initiatives to improve transportation efficiency, this research employs social media data analysis to assess passenger sentiment across six key transportation hubs in Eastern China. Utilizing methodological approaches such as keyword frequency analysis and semantic categorization of 39,061 Dianping reviews, supplemented by network visualizations with Gephi, this study reveals insights into factors influencing passenger satisfaction beyond travel efficiency. Signage quality, facility availability, queueing, and crowding emerge as significant determinants of passenger behavior. The study underscores the importance of strategic improvements in station design, navigational aids, and facility management, grounded in real-time data analytics and passenger feedback, to enhance overall passenger satisfaction and promote sustainable urban mobility. This research contributes to advancing understanding of passenger behavior and informs efforts aimed at improving urban transportation systems to meet the evolving needs of passengers and cities.

Abstract:The railway plays an essential role in urban and intercity transport of goods and people. Intercity and urban rail transit infrastructures contribute to the economic and environmental sustainability of global economies. Those infrastructures can be modeled as complex networks, so that we can evaluate system properties of the network structure. This stream of research has focused on the topological analysis of global network structure, but little research exists that examines how local network structures affect system properties. The local structure of complex networks can be examined with network motif analysis, as those network motifs are the building blocks of networked systems. Nevertheless, there has been scarce attention given to local network properties in rail transit networks. We contribute to covering this gap in the literature with a literature review of motif analysis research and its application to weighted and unweighted rail transit networks, also covering the current state-of-the-art of network motif decomposition and analysis. We demonstrate that network motif analysis is not only applicable, but also beneficial for the design and planning of rail transit networks, enhancing their sustainability by improving efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and optimizing resource allocation. Based on our findings, we propose future research directions that involve applying motif analysis to enhance the sustainability features of both unweighted and weighted rail transit networks.

Abstract:Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering: A Multimodal Systems Approach is a welcome addition to the small group of textbooks designed for an introductory transportation course. As indicated by the title, the book addresses general aspects of planning, public transportation, air transportation, freight transportation, and issues of sustainability, in addition to highway operations and design. The authors are experienced transportation educators who have applied best practices for student learning in crafting a textbook for learner-centered courses. The importance of establishing measurable learning objectives for students is well-documented in the literature. The authors provide a clear list of these objectives at the start of each chapter. They also have attempted to connect the end-chapter exercises with the objectives, although this connection is clearer in some chapters than in others. The fictitious small city of “Mythaca” is the setting for many of the example and end-of-chapter exercises. Each chapter begins with a “scenario” involving a specific problem related to transportation in Mythaca or its region. These scenarios grab the reader’s attention and pique the reader’s curiosity about the issues raised. Many of these issues will be familiar to readers as topics of discussion from their own hometowns. In many of the chapters the authors refer back to the opening scenario within the text and examples. The examples provide a step-by-step approach to solving the problem, and the level of difficulty and complexity in the examples is similar to the level of difficulty in the end-of-chapter exercises. The authors acknowledge that while planning is the first step in the life of a transportation project, it is both abstract and hard to understand without some of the concepts and vocabulary from design and operations. Therefore, they have organized the book with “topics of greatest familiarity to students—traffic—near the front.” The authors tie concepts together throughout the book and across chapters through cross-references, and the reader will find

Abstract:The volume of passenger flow in urban rail transit network operation continues to increase. Effective measures of passenger flow control can greatly alleviate the pressure of transportation and ensure the safe operation of urban rail transit systems. The controllability of an urban rail transit passenger flow network determines the equilibrium state of passenger flow density in time and space. First, a passenger flow network model of urban rail transit and an evaluation index of the alternative set of flow control stations are proposed. Then, the controllable determination model of the urban rail transit passenger flow network is formed by converting the passenger flow distribution into a system state equation based on system control theory. The optimization method of passenger flow control stations is established via driver node matching to realize the optimized control of network stations. Finally, a real-world case study of the Beijing subway network is presented to demonstrate that the passenger flow network is controllable when driver nodes compose 25.3% of the entire network. The optimization of the flow control station, set during the morning peak, proves the efficiency and validity of the proposed model and algorithm.

Abstract:Menezes and Barabasi have once developed a framework by mean–variance analysis to investigate the relationship between the average flux and fluctuations and found a scaling-law behavior in two distinct phase. By then most related researches dedicated to understanding the scaling laws through the internal/external forces of the system. However, as for subway system, the demand of transporting a large amount of passengers during peak hours is a necessity. Thus, alternating the phase or reducing the impact of external forces by cutting down the total passengers is completely unrealistic. The more operable approaches are specifically regulating the distribution of passenger flow in order to drive the system into a more stable phase. In this paper, we carried out the mean–variance analysis on subway traffic and dedicated to discover the effect of spatial–temporal distributions of passenger flow on the fluctuations in subway traffic. By analyzing the control properties of the transit networks constructed according to different passenger flow threshold, it is found that the control mode of transit networks might differ the phase change of fluctuations, which proposed a new perspective of controlling the fluctuations in subway traffic.

Abstract:Transportation plays a key role in today’s economy. Hence, intelligent transportation systems have attracted a great deal of attention among research communities. There are a few review papers in this area. Most of them focus only on travel time prediction. Furthermore, these papers do not include recent research. To address these shortcomings, this study aims to examine the research on the arrival and travel time prediction on road-based on recently published articles. More specifically, this paper aims to (i) offer an extensive literature review of the field, provide a complete taxonomy of the existing methods, identify key challenges and limitations associated with the techniques; (ii) present various evaluation metrics, influence factors, exploited dataset as well as describe essential concepts based on a detailed analysis of the recent literature sources; (iii) provide significant information to researchers and transportation applications developer. As a result of a rigorous selection process and a comprehensive analysis, the findings provide a holistic picture of open issues and several important observations that can be considered as feasible opportunities for future research directions.

Abstract:Operations, management and planning of urban transit systems have evolved substantially since the application of transit data collection technologies, such as, automated fare collection (AFC), Global Position System (GPS), smartphones and face identification. A diversity of detailed sensor data in urban transit systems are being used as fundamental data sources to observe passenger travel behavior, reschedule operation plans and adjust policy decisions from the daily operations to the long-term network planning. This review aims to summarize and analyze those related challenges and data-driven applications. Firstly, we review the data collecting technologies since the late 1990s by classifying the various technologies into two groups: traditional technologies and advanced technologies. A vast body of literature has been developed in this area given the wide range of problems addressed under the transit data label. A summary diagram is proposed to demonstrate the transit data applications and research topics. The data applications are classified into three branches: passenger behavior, operation optimization, and policy application. For each branch, the hot research direction and dimension shown as sub-branches are represented by reviewing the highly cited and the latest literature. As a result, this article discussed the concept and characteristics of transit data and its collection technologies, and further summarized the methodology and potential for each transit data application and suggested a few promising implications for future efforts.

Urban mobility infrastructures as public spaces: The uses of Sé subway station in downtown São Paulo

Abstract:Urban Studies, Ahead of Print. This article aims to contribute to the discussion on the publicness of public spaces by focusing on the uses of free access areas in urban mobility infrastructures such as subway stations, especially those uses not associated with mobility, transit and passenger flow – I call them 'non-transit uses'. I also focus specifically on people at the station whose behaviour differs from a 'typical passenger'. Instead of entering the station and heading to platforms, the ones I call 'non-passengers' do not ride the subway, do not arrive there by subway and remain at the station for long periods. To study the uses of space, I suggest an investigation framework that allows a focus on how these free access areas and their publicness are a product of these specific uses. The paper is based on Lefebvre's dialectic assumption on space, particularly his analytical triad of 'perceived', 'conceived' and 'lived' spaces, and Frehse's specific definition of uses (patterns of bodily behaviour and social interactions). I then investigate what the non-transit uses of non-passengers can reveal about the Sé subway station in downtown São Paulo by studying them in every aspect of Lefebvre's triad, thus revealing conceived, perceived and lived uses of the station. Finally, I conclude that the 'non-passengers' use the station in similar ways to a public square and that the 'publicness' of this station lies in the relation of its non-transit uses with the Sé square placed above the station.

Abstract:Inspired by state-of-the-art material science, computer techniques, artificial intelligence, and automatic control, new-generation transportation infrastructures are becoming digitalized and intelligent. Many major developed countries around the globe are actively promoting the application of innovative intelligence-based technologies in transportation infrastructures in accordance with local conditions. This review begins with a brief discussion on the basic definition, scientific foundation, and development process for the intellectualization of transportation infrastructures. Then, following the whole life-cycle chain of design, construction, operational maintenance, and elimination, the current research status and major challenges presented by intellectualization technologies are systematically investigated. Subsequently, recent achievements in intellectual technologies are comprehensively presented by selecting the Beijing–Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway—the world’s first railway built based on the concept of intelligent construction—as an example. Finally, a discussion on the future development of the intellectualization of transportation infrastructures is provided from the three dimensions of standard systems, theoretical methods, and talent training.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid advancement of information and communication technology has brought a revolution in the domain of public transport (PT) planning alongside other areas of transport planning and operations. Of particular significance are the passively generated big data sources (e.g., smart cards, detailed vehicle location data, mobile phone traces, social media) which have started replacing the traditional surveys conducted onboard, at the stops/stations and/or at the household level for gathering insights about the behavior of the PT users. This paper presents a systematic review of the contemporary research papers related to the use of novel data sources in PT planning with particular focus on (1) assessing the usability and potential strengths and weaknesses of different emerging big data sources, (2) identifying the challenges and highlighting research gaps. Reviewed articles were categorized based on qualitative pattern matching (similarities/dissimilarities) and multiple sources of evidence analysis under three categories—use of big data in (1) travel pattern analysis, (2) PT modelling, and (3) PT performance assessment. The review revealed research gaps ranging from methodological and applied research on fusing different forms of big data as well as big data and traditional survey data; further work to validate the models and assumptions; lack of progress on developing more dynamic planning models. Findings of this study could inform transport planners and researchers about the opportunities/challenges big data bring for PT planning. Harnessing the full potential of the big data sources for PT planning can be extremely useful for cities in the developing world, where the PT landscape is changing more rapidly, but traditional forms of data are expensive to collect.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed an exceptional extension of public transportation networks in People's Republic of China, both at a national scale with the construction of the first HSR railway network of the world, and at local scales with numerous cities developing high coverage subway networks often from scratch. This chapter studies these mutations, both from a quantitative perspective with the study of the evolution of population accessibility landscapes, at a national level and for several cities, and from a qualitative perspective with fieldwork observations. We confirm that rebalancing planning objectives are well achieved in terms of accessibility at both scales, when all planned lines will be achieved but already in a significant manner. We finally hypothesize possible paths for the coupled network-territory systems, given the extent without precedent of such mutations.

Abstract:The efficient and safe evacuation of passengers is an important foundation for ensuring the service level of subway stations and an important part of promoting the development of smart urban rail. Due to the complex structure of stations, strong heterogeneity of passenger flow, and high uncertainty of road interruption in emergencies, passenger evacuation dynamics have received widespread attention and become an inevitable research trend. In order to deeply understand the current research focus and development trend related to emergency evacuation of passengers in subway stations, 196 relevant published literature from 2000 to 2023 are analyzed, and a systematic review is provided. The publication trend of literature, the distribution of countries and institutions, the co-occurrence of keywords, and the types of evacuation are comprehensively reviewed from the perspective of bibliometrics. It can be observed that the number of literature related to passenger evacuation in subway stations has shown explosive growth, especially in the past three years. Special attentions are paid to the current main research hot spots, where passenger evacuation behavior is studied from multiple dimensions, including passenger evacuation dynamics modeling, evacuation simulation, evacuation behavior analysis, and evacuation optimization. Challenges restricting the improvement of passenger emergency evacuation capability are identified, and corresponding possible research directions are proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Since the operation of the Shinkansen in 1964, the development of High-speed Rail (HSR) has been one of the central features of European and Asia transport infrastructure policy. At the same time, scholars conducted extensive and thorough researches on the economic and spatial effect of HSR, with different methods and from different perspectives, and produced plenty of literatures and abundant conclusions. This study aims at reviewing the various overseas researches on the economic and spatial effect of HSR.Studies on the economic effect of HSR focus on the population, regional economic, industry development and passenger transport market, while the spatial effect of HSR is depended on the research scale. Different conclusions were formed on transnational scale, national and regional scale, urban scale. In the end, some implications are put forward for the research on the economic and spatial effect of HSR in China.

Abstract:The results of transportation infrastructure network analyses have been used to analyze complex networks in a topological context. However, most modeling approaches, including those based on complex network theory, do not fully account for real-life traffic patterns and may provide an incomplete view of network functions. This study utilizes trip data obtained from the Beijing Subway System to characterize individual passenger movement patterns. A directed weighted passenger flow network was constructed from the subway infrastructure network topology by incorporating trip data. The passenger flow networks exhibit several properties that can be characterized by power-law distributions based on flow size, and log-logistic distributions based on the fraction of boarding and departing passengers. The study also characterizes the temporal patterns of in-transit and waiting passengers and provides a hierarchical clustering structure for passenger flows. This hierarchical flow organization varies in the spatial domain. Ten cluster groups were identified, indicating a hierarchical urban polycentric structure composed of large concentrated flows at urban activity centers. These empirical findings provide insights regarding urban human mobility patterns within a large subway network.
