Abstract:China has been continuously implementing the open-door policy for past 15years ever since it joined the World Trade Organization, which escalated international trade and demand for shipping. Compared with the other major importing countries in the world, China's importing tariff is relatively low. Under the Belt and Road initiatives, more Free Trade Agreements to be concluded and more Free Trade Zones to be established, it is expected that the effective import tariff rate may continue to decrease in the future. This study analyses the impact of further reduction in Chinese import tariff rate on major economic indicators using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and based on the Chinese macro-economic data of 2012. The model results show that, with a balanced international payment, such a reduction can increase GDP, resident consumption, both imports and exports, and reduce GDP price, trade surplus, and government revenue. The results ease the concern that further import tariff reduction may harm the domestic production. Rather, it points out that there are still rooms to improve national economy and increase the consumer utility by trade liberation.

Abstract:Abstract Optimizing export growth patterns and improving the quality of export trade have become prominent issues that need to be addressed urgently in the context of increasing global economic uncertainty. This study utilizes matched data from the CEPII database (1995–2020) and WTO tariff database, adopts a product-level perspective based on the triple margins of exports, and uses an individual-time two-way fixed-effects model to investigate the impact of import trade liberalization on China's export growth pattern. The research findings are as follows: (1) Increasing levels of import trade liberalization are beneficial for enhancing the extensive margin, intensive margin, and quantity margin of products, while exerting a restraining effect on the price margin. This strengthens the price advantage of Chinese products, indicating that import trade liberalization helps optimize China's export growth pattern. (2) Compared with the intensive margin, import trade liberalization has a more significant promoting effect on the extensive margin. (3) The conclusions drawn from heterogeneity analysis suggest that trade liberalization has a more pronounced effect on the extensive margin, intensive margin, and quantity margin of products in medium-high technology industries, differentiated products, and intermediate goods. This study holds important theoretical and practical significance for evaluating the economic benefits of expanding imports, optimizing China's export growth pattern, and improving the quality of export trade.

New driving force for China's import growth: Assessing the role of cross-border e-commerce

Abstract:This paper investigates the role of cross-border e-commerce on China's import growth, using the promulgation of cross-border e-commerce-related policies since 2012 as a quasi-natural experiment and using the 'Cross-border E-commerce Retail Import Commodity List' to identify cross-border e-commerce industries. Our difference-in-difference results show that cross-border e-commerce has significantly boosted China's import growth. Dynamic effects show that while China's imports were low prior to 2012, cross-border e-commerce has increased China's imports significantly since 2012, verifying the validity of our baseline results. Placebo tests and a series of robustness checks further confirm the validity and robustness of the baseline results. Further analysis reveals that cross-border e-commerce has mainly promoted imports from developed countries, and primarily facilitated imports of clothing, food and daily necessities. Mechanism analysis shows that cross-border e-commerce not only stimulated both the intensive and extensive margins in import growth, but also reduced cultural distances and increased China's imports from countries with larger cultural distances substantially. However, geographical and institutional distances still matter and exhibit significantly negative effects on China's cross-border e-commerce imports.

Abstract:By using a relative analysis method, this article quantitatively analyzes the relation between economic development and import-export of China from GNP, agriculture, light industry, heavy industry and their chief branches, and the chief products of several industries. From the analysis results, GNP, agriculture, light industry, and heavy industry against import and export have positive correlation, and the relation to export is higher than that to import. The relation between import and export for all industries is quite different because of comparative advantages and domestic demand intensity. The chief product output shows positive correlation to export, but shows negative correlation to import.

Abstract:The paper analyses main factors to impact current and long-term economic growth of China from the point of view of final demands including exports, investment and consumption. First of all, the paper examines the effects of global financial crisis and recession on economic growth of China and indicates that the influences from the changes of external environments can be controlled due to its shares and can be reduced through boosting domestic demands. Then the paper examines the main facts to impact domestic damans, especially, indicates changes of the formation of national income distribution of China during current yeas have induced the disequilibrium of domestic demands. Therefore, it is an important path for China to adjust national distribution to enhance domestic demands and maintain a long-term and stable and rapid economic growth.

Abstract:China achieved average GDP growth of nearly 10 percent over the period 1978-2015. However, how long can such high levels of growth be sustained, especially when per capita GDP levels have reached middle-income status, and the normal tendency of economies is to slow down as they mature? This paper reviews the recent literature on the determinants and outlook for real GDP growth in China and addresses some of the key issues, including identifying supply-side factors that can support continued strong growth under favorable conditions, as well as risk factors that might cause growth to fall short. The paper reviews supply-side determinants of growth using a growth accounting framework, and also assesses major demand-side factors driving potential growth, including exports, capital formation and household consumption.
Pattern, Factors and Potential of Export Growth in China's Labor-intensive Agricultural Products: A Study of US, Japanese, EU, South Korean and Hong Kong Markets

Abstract:Using the three-margin decomposition framework, the modified CMS model and CTG(Competitiveness of trade based on Gravity model) Index on trade competitiveness, this paper analyzes the export data of China's labor-intensive agricultural products during 1995-2012, and discusses the pattern, factor and potential behind the growth of China's labor-intensive agricultural exports.The results show that:(1) difference exists in the growth pattern of different products and at different times in the target market;(2) the effect of growth factors on the whole export and on representative products also varies, thus the individual features of a certain product should be considered when expanding the market;(3) apart from certain products and markets, the trade potential of China's export products remains high and their competitiveness strong. The results reveal that there is a certain room for adjusting the export growth pattern of existing labor-intensive agricultural products in China, and policies should be fine-tuned by analyzing the export growth factors and trade potential of different products and markets.

Abstract:With the yearly increase of export proportion in China's economy, China's economic growth is relying more and more on export. In the current case of weak external demand, Exports plays an important role in the stability of China's future economic development. Through the State Space Model, the paper has tested the variation tendency of how much China's economy rely on export, which turns out that China's economy has been relying more and more on export year by year since 2002. Following the analysis of China's export, the relationship between export rebate rates and export rate is analyzed through a Linear Regression Model as an attempt to reveal the impact of export rebate on exports, which can prove that export rebate might be a feasible way to Stabilize China's economic growth.

Abstract:Based on the case of Yangguang Group, this paper constructs a monopolistic competition trade model with product quality,and supposes the strate- gy of ‘import-for-export’ can explain China's export miracle.In order to realize the export-oriented strate- gy,conditioned with the lag of native machinery man- ufacturing,Chinese export firms import advanced ma- chinery from developed countries massively to im- prove the product quality,and satisfy the higher re- quirement for product quality in international market, and eventually expand the export size constantly and rapidly.This paper finds in the short run,the more extent imported machinery from developed countries can decrease marginal production cost,and the closer the price is to the price of native machinery,the more preferd to imported machinery final product exporting firms of developing countries will be.And after this, the export size will increase,which can be defined as import-induced export effect.And the more extent imported machinery improves the final product quali- ty,the more prefered to import machinery final prod- uct exporting firms of developing countries will be, and the more extent the export will increase.By sta- tistical analysis,this paper also finds the realization of import-for-export causes the lag of native machinery manufacturing in Chinese middle and western regions. The long run equlibrium analysis shows import-for- export improves the equilibrium output and product quality of all export firms in the developing countries, but the equilibrium number of firms in this industry will decrease.

Abstract:Taking the contribution of total factor productivity as the index of the economic growth pattern, and based on non-parameter DEA-Malmquist index methods, this paper investigates characteristics of the economic growth pattern of china's industry from 2000 to 2010. At the same time, using the panel data of 30 industrial sub-sectors, the author analyzes the influence of exports, imports, FDI on the economic growth pattern. The results indicate that the pattern of China's industrial growth is still based on extensive growth. Exports have no positive effect on the pattern of the economic growth pattern of china's industry. Imports and FDI both have positive effect on the pattern of the economic growth pattern of china's industry. The positive effect from Imports is more obvious in labor and resource intensive industries and industries in which corporation size is larger. The positive effect from FDI is stronger in capital and technology intensive industries and industries in which corporation size is lager.

Abstract:China’s size limits its capacity to source further growth from exports and so the inevitable turn inward is in progress, as suggested by declining gross flows on its balance of payments relative to its GDP. Thus far, key home policy drivers have been fiscal expansion and public investment, though provincial indebtedness will constrain these in future and growth will be driven by the government’s reform agenda, which includes further industrial reform and “internationalisation”. The short run effects of these domestic policy and external shocks are examined using a model of the Chinese economy that takes explicit account of oligopoly behaviour. The results confirm that further fiscal expansions, even with large public investment components, will not contribute the major share of new growth, but industrial reform in heavy manufacturing and services would reduce costs and foster growth in output, private consumption and modern sector employment. At the same time, while China’s private investment, and hence its overall performance, will be sensitive to the uncertain effects of internationalisation increased nominal exchange rate flexibility would offer a reliable cushion.

Abstract:Based on the 2000~2007 monthly data,the paper analyses the relationship between China's import and export and concludes that there exists a long-term equilibrium between import and export volumes.The Granger causality test shows that,there is notable Granger causality relationship between 4~6 period lagged import growth rate to export growth rate.In view of the relationship between China's import and export,the paper presents three explanations: the influence of the government,the impact of foreign direct investment and the rapid development of processing trade.

Abstract:Given China's role as a dominant grain and oilseeds importer, any changes in Chinese policy can significantly affect exporting countries. We estimate how the domestic supply and demand factors determine China's grain and oilseed imports and project the impact on U.S. exports to China with changes in Chinese policies. The results indicate that China's policy on increasing domestic soybeans and corn production and decreasing meat consumption can considerably diminish the U.S. and its competitors' exports to China. The key policy implication is that the United States should actively seek out new export markets considering China's evolving supply and demand conditions.

Determinants and Trends of China's Export Goods Structure Upgrading

Abstract:By establishing an analytic framework including main facts and factors, the author made a forecast on the trends of export growth and goods structure upgrading. Firstly, the author identified 8 critical factors affecting the structure changes of export goods, specified variables, established an analytic model and tested the model with historical data. Secondly, the author screened out some types of goods with higher technologic and value-added content and greater export potential, with the factors got from the model, analyzed and forecasted the growth trend. The main conclusion is that comparative advantage, domestic industrial foundation and domestic market structure, as well as extent participating into global labor division are the main three types of factors determining the trade growth and structure. China has all the three favorable factors. In the near future, export competitiveness of labor-intensive products will be maintained, and the export of those goods with comparatively higher technologic and value-added content will grow rapidly, which will continuously promote the upgrading of export goods structure. The research shows that there are objective rules in the export goods structure upgrading, and export promoting policy can get better effects only when complying with market rules.

Abstract:This paper investigates how Chinese manufacturing exports respond to destination countries' digital trade barriers. Using Chinese Customs data from 2014 to 2018 and data on countries' digital service trade restrictiveness by the OECD, we find that Chinese total manufacturing exports drop by 2.32%, or $30.92 billion, due to the increase in destination countries' composite digital trade barriers from 2014 to 2018. A further decomposition shows that the reduction is mostly explained by the decrease in export quantity, with export prices remaining relatively unchanged. Moreover, digital trade barriers decrease Chinese exports not only by depressing the exports of surviving products but also by reducing the exporting possibility of new entering products and increasing the risk of products' exiting. The heterogeneity analyses show that a favorable institutional environment helps alleviate the negative effects and that exports of high‐tech products are less sensitive to digital trade barriers.
