Abstract:A new bisacrylate, 1,4-butanediol bis(alpha-trimethylsiloxyacrylate), that incorporates trimethylsiloxy (Me 3 SiO-) groups on the alpha-position of each acrylic moiety can be synthesized in acceptable yield (67%) and analytical purity starting from the readily available 1,4-butanediol dipyruvate. The monomer can be crosslinked efficiently under UV-curing conditions as long as the curing temperature is not above 125 ° C, temperature at which the propagation reaction becomes reversible (ceiling temperature effect).

Abstract:The acrylates with oligomers and monomers from (partially) bio‐based feedstock become available at (semi‐)industrial scale, which can be processed through photochemical crosslinking for applications in coatings, additive manufacturing, electronics, or inks. Although fossil‐ and bio‐based acrylates may have a similar chemical composition, it requires good understanding of processing and structure–property relationships as minor changes in microstructure may strongly alter the performance. A comparative study on mechanical properties and chemical structure of bio‐ and fossil‐based acrylates with different functionalities and backbone structures reveals higher ductility of bio‐based acrylates, in relation with a more complex organization of the intrinsic molecular structure. The latter is confirmed by mechanical testing and visco‐elastic characteristics (dynamic mechanical analysis) yielding lower stiffness and higher dampening of bio‐based acrylates, in parallel with a lower glass transition temperature (differential scanning calorimetry). The complex molecular arrangements include a nanoscale morphology with ordered structure (X‐ray diffraction), conformational changes (infrared spectroscopy), and a residual high‐molecular weight fraction (size exclusion chromatography). The visco‐elastic calculations indicate only 4% to 5% lower crosslinking density and around 10% higher mean molar mass of the polymer chains segments between chemical crosslinks and trapped chain entanglements, which explain the unique structure and performance of bio‐based acrylates.

Abstract:Possible structural variation of a bio‐based dimethacrylate derived from oleic acid and ethylene glycol is discussed as well as sources to obtain the starting material for manufacturing of this monomer. Introduction of an aromatic structure either as bridge between the two ester structures formed or as substituent is expected to influence the properties of both the monomer and polymer made of it e.g. by photoinitiated polymerization. Furthermore, aspects influencing the transfer of a new product are included into the discussion as well to increase the interest of researchers working in the industry on manufacturing of a new product and its development for the market.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In the context of the development of fully bio-based materials, access to multi-functional bio-based monomers represents one of the primary industrial challenges in the upcoming years. Itaconic acid and N -acetyl homocysteine thiolactone are two promising sustainable building blocks displaying complementary reactivities. In this paper, we design new sustainable monomers, β- N -homocysteine thiolactyl itaconamic acid and α,β- N , N ′-homocysteine thiolactyl itaconamide, by functionalizing itaconic acid with one or two thiolactone moieties by amidification reaction in water. These synthesized monomers are very versatile bearing both an activated vinyl group that can react through either radical or Michael addition mechanisms, and a thiolactone ring, which is prone to undergo nucleophilic ring-opening reaction with primary amines liberating a highly reactive thiol. The polymerizability of these two monomers was then examined according to two polymerization pathways. In a first stage, the step-growth polyaddition of both monomers according to an aminolysis-thiol-Michael addition mechanism was studied in the presence of various functional primary amines, leading to the preparation of original multi-functional oligopoly(amide-thioether)s. In a second stage, the chain-growth free radical (co)polymerization of both monomers was investigated and enabled the synthesis of COOH-containing and functionalizable polymethacrylates. All the monomer and (co)polymer structures were carefully characterized by 1 H, 13 C, COSY, and HSQC.

Abstract:Acetylenic polymers are a group of specialty materials with novel properties. In this paper, recent progress in the development of functional acetylenic polymers is summarized. These polymers are synthesized through different polymerization approaches such as Sonogashira polycoupling, decarbonylative chloroarylation polyaddition, and polycyclotrimerization. Efforts in the development of new monomers and catalyst exploration as well as reaction optimization have lead to a large quantity of linear and hyperbranched polymers with high molecular weights and good processability. The polymer functionalization is realized by incorporating functional units into the monomer structures, which endow the resulting polymers with fascinating properties such as aggregation-induced emission, optical nonlinearity, light refractivity, photosensitivity, photopatternability, redoxactivity, and magnetism.

Abstract:There is currently a great need for rigid, high‐performance and processable bio‐based polymers and plastics as alternatives to the fossil‐based materials used today. Here, we report on the straightforward synthesis and polymerization of lignin‐derived methacrylate monomers based on the methyl esters of syringic, vanillic, and 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid, respectively. The corresponding homopolymethacrylates exhibit high glass transition temperatures (Tgs) at 106, 128, and 197 °C, respectively. Rheological properties and thermal stability up to at least 277 °C indicate that these polymers are melt‐processable. In addition, copolymers with methyl methacrylate are prepared to further vary and tune the polymer properties. An integrated ex‐ante and prospective life‐cycle assessment of key environmental impact parameters indicates similar or only slightly higher values compared to well‐established fossil‐based methyl methacrylate. Moreover, the toxicity towards human HeLa cell lines compares well with that of poly(methyl methacrylate). Hence, the potential availability of lignin‐derived acids, combined with the straightforward and potentially upscalable monomer synthesis, make these rigid polymers appealing alternatives towards bio‐based high‐Tg thermoplastic materials with low toxicity.

Abstract:Here, we present an approach for developing the next generation of bio(meth)acrylates using glycerol ketals as a platform for property differentiation. Crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, and ketones, derived from biomass valorization, are the building blocks for these polymeric materials. Biobased materials are witnessing a prominent boom in research and commercialization due to increased awareness about the carbon footprint and depletion of petroleum resources. Biodiesel and biopolymers are major linchpins to improve sustainable energy and material needs of the world in the coming years. Glycerol ketal (meth)acrylate monomers synthesized by the reaction of glycerol and various ketones consist of 65–74 wt % bioderived content. Glycerol ketals from different ketones used in our study (acetone, cyclopentanone, and butanone) are the pendant groups on the (meth)acrylate polymer backbone. We studied the effect of various pendant side chain ketal groups on the thermal and rheological properties of these polymers. The methacrylate polymers had a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) (8–40 °C), whereas the acrylate derivatives had a much lower Tg between −11 and 2 °C. Abstract:The first part of this review critically examines the various attempts to prepare macromonomers: Anionic and cationic polymerization for synthesizing living polymers have been preferred whenever possible but two-step radical polymerizations making use of efficient transfer agents have also been applied.In the second part, homopolymerization of the macromonomers — yielding highly branched structures — as well as copolymerization with a classical monomer — readily producing graft copolymers — are presented. The versatility of these methods is demonstrated by preparing original amphiphilic products. The properties of these segregated products are described in the few cases where they are available.

Abstract:Synthetic biopolymers are attractive alternatives to biobased polymers, especially because they rarely induce an immune response in a living organism. Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) is a well-known synthetic aliphatic polyester universally used for many applications, including biomedical and environmental ones. Unlike poly lactic acid (PLA), PCL has no chiral atoms, and it is impossible to play with the stereochemistry to modify its properties. To expand the range of applications for PCL, researchers have investigated the possibility of grafting polymer chains onto the PCL backbone. As the PCL backbone is not functionalized, it must be first functionalized in order to be able to graft reactive groups onto the PCL chain. These reactive groups will then allow the grafting of new reagents and especially new polymer chains. Grafting of polymer chains is mainly carried out by "grafting from" or "grafting onto" methods. In this review we describe the main structures of the graft copolymers produced, their different synthesis methods, and their main characteristics and applications, mainly in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Petrochemical based polymers, paints and coatings are cornerstones of modern industry but our future sustainable society demands greener processes and renewable feedstock materials. A challenge is to access platform monomers from biomass resources while integrating the principles of green chemistry in their chemical synthesis. We present a synthesis route starting from biomass-derived furfural towards the commonly used monomers maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, implementing environmentally benign photooxygenation, aerobic oxidation and ethenolysis reactions. Maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, transformed into sodium acrylate, were isolated in yields of 85 % (2 steps) and 81 % (4 steps), respectively. With minimal waste and high atom efficiency, this biobased route provides a viable alternative to access key monomers.

Abstract:Polymers synthesized from acetylenic monomers often possess electronically unsaturated fused rings and thus show versatile optoelectronic properties and advanced functionalities. To expand the family of acetylenic polymers, development of new catalyst systems and synthetic routes is critically important. We summarize herein recent research progress on development of new methodologies towards functional polymers using alkyne building blocks since 2014. The polymerizations are categorized by the number of monomer components, namely homopolymerizations, two-component polymerizations, and multicomponent polymerizations. The properties and applications of acetylenic polymers, such as aggregation-induced emission, fluorescent photopatterning, light refraction, chemosensing, mechanochromism, chain helicity, etc., are also discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis of polymers from renewable resources is a burning issue that is actively investigated. Polyepoxide networks constitute a major class of thermosetting polymers and are extensively used as coatings, electronic materials, adhesives. Owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties, chemical resistance, adhesion, and minimal shrinkage after curing, they are used in structural applications as well. Most of these thermosets are industrially manufactured from bisphenol A (BPA), a substance that was initially synthesized as a chemical estrogen. The awareness on BPA toxicity combined with the limited availability and volatile cost of fossil resources and the non-recyclability of thermosets implies necessary changes in the field of epoxy networks. Thus, substitution of BPA has witnessed an increasing number of studies both from the academic and industrial sides. This review proposes to give an overview of the reported aromatic multifunctional epoxide building blocks synthesized from biomass or from molecules that could be obtained from transformed biomass. After a reminder of the main glycidylation routes and mechanisms and the recent knowledge on BPA toxicity and legal issues, this review will provide a brief description of the main natural sources of aromatic molecules. The different epoxy prepolymers will then be organized from simple, mono-aromatic di-epoxy, to mono-aromatic poly-epoxy, to di-aromatic di-epoxy compounds, and finally to derivatives possessing numerous aromatic rings and epoxy groups.

Abstract:Poly(alkylene dicarboxylate)s constitute a family of biodegradable polymers with increasing interest for both commodity and speciality applications. Most of these polymers can be prepared from biobased diols and dicarboxylic acids such as 1,4-butanediol, succinic acid and carbohydrates. This review provides a current status report concerning synthesis, biodegradation and applications of a series of polymers that cover a wide range of properties, namely, materials from elastomeric to rigid characteristics that are suitable for applications such as hydrogels, soft tissue engineering, drug delivery systems and liquid crystals. Finally, the incorporation of aromatic units and α-amino acids is considered since stiffness of molecular chains and intermolecular interactions can be drastically changed. In fact, poly(ester amide)s derived from naturally occurring amino acids offer great possibilities as biodegradable materials for biomedical applications which are also extensively discussed.

Advances in Polymer Science enjoys a longstanding tradition and good reputation in its community. Each volume is dedicated to a current topic, and each review critically surveys one aspect of that topic, to place it within the context of the volume. The volumes typically summarize the significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years and discuss them critically, presenting selected examples, explaining and illustrating the important principles, and bringing together many important references of primary literature. Abstract:For short-term sustainable applications such as packaging and agriculture, new biodegradable and renewable macromolecular architectures based on polysaccharide and polyester have been developed with an original multistep pathway, and then characterized. In a first step, amylomaize starch (AMS), based on rather linear polysaccharides with very high amylose content, and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a potential fully biobased and biodegradable co-polyester, were chemically modified. Reactive maleimide and thiol groups have been added to their chemical structures. They have undergone a thiol-Michael addition, yielding a cross-linked network based on AMS and PBAT oligomers. In this large study, the structures of the different AMS and PBAT derivatives were precisely determined by FTIR, 1H, 13C APT and 31P NMR. Nitrogen containing products were also analyzed by 1H-15N NMR, a useful but largely underutilized tool, to determine the chemical structures of these synthesized products. This study clearly shows the high potential of these macromolecular architectures based on AMS and PBAT obtained by a fast click reaction, to develop reactive additives in the case of rather incompatible multiphase materials (blends, multilayers,) for a large range of short-term and demanding applications (packaging, agriculture,) for a greener future.

There is a growing demand for modification with improved properties of the polyurethane-acrylate. This review covers the following topic: structure, modification of polyurethane-acrylate backbone, reactive diluents, curing, mechanical, optical, thermal behavior, and applications presented herein. Abstract:The present work aimed to prepare novel bio-based composites by adding fillers coming from agro-wastes to an acrylate epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) resin, using liquid crystal display (LCD) 3D printing. Different photocurable formulations were prepared by varying the reactive diluents, iso-bornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA). Then, two fillers derived from different industrial wastes, corn (GTF) and wine (WPL-CF) by-products, were added to the AESO-based formulations to develop polymer composites with improved properties. The printability by LCD of the photocurable formulations was widely studied. Bio-based objects with different geometries were realized, showing printing accuracy, layer adhesion, and accurate details. The thermo-mechanical and mechanical properties of the 3D-printed composites were tested by TGA, DMA, and tensile tests. The results revealed that the agro-wastes' addition led to a remarkable increase in the elastic modulus, tensile strength, and glass transition temperature in the glassy state for the systems containing IBOMA and for flexible structures in the rubbery region for systems containing THFA. AESO-based polymers demonstrated tunable properties, varying from rigid to flexible, in the presence of different diluents and biofillers. This finding paves the way for the use of this kind of composite in applications, such as biomedical for the realization of prostheses.

Abstract:Bioplastics appear as an alternative to fossil fuel-derived plastics because bioplastics are carbon neutral and often biodegradable, thus potentially solving the issues of plastic pollution and climate change. In particular, polylactic acid is a substitute for traditional petrochemical-based polymers. Here, we review polylactic acid production with focus on surface modification and integration of bioactive compounds. Surface can be modified by chemical treatment, photografting, surface entrapment, plasma treatment, and coating. Bioactive compounds can be incorporated by encapsulation, impregnation, melt blending, solvent casting, electrospinning, and in situ polymerization. Biomedical and packaging applications are discussed.
