Abstract:Waterproof membranes have higher initial strength, faster construction, and better waterproofing than conventional sheet membranes. In addition, their polymer constituents have much higher interfacial adhesion and tensile strength than those of conventional materials. However, despite their advantages, waterproof membranes are not widely used in civil construction. This study evaluates the material properties and interface parameters of a waterproof membrane by considering the results of laboratory experiments and numerical analysis. Since the contact behavior of a membrane at its interface with shotcrete is important for understanding the mechanism of the support it offers known as a shotcrete tunnel lining, modeling should adopt appropriate contact conditions. The numerical analysis identifies the suitability and contact conditions of the waterproof membrane in various conditions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to evaluate the contact behavior of waterproof membranes in tunnel linings and their impact on structural stability. Specifically, the research aims to evaluate the material properties and interface parameters of waterproof membranes, especially their contact conditions with shotcrete, through laboratory experiments and numerical analysis. Since waterproof membranes may serve as part of the structural support while providing waterproof protection in tunnel construction, understanding their contact behavior under different conditions is crucial for ensuring the safety and durability of tunnels. The paper focuses on how to determine the contact conditions of waterproof membranes suitable for different conditions and how these conditions affect the stability of tunnel structures. By setting up different analysis cases (such as no waterproof membrane, waterproof membrane located on the inner surface of shotcrete, waterproof membrane located in the middle of shotcrete, etc.), the researchers hope to more accurately simulate the actual application situation of waterproof membranes and provide a scientific basis for their rational use in tunnel engineering.
