Abstract:Owning to the unique structure, the excellent physical and chemical properties, the superstrong mechanics performances and so on, carbon nanotubes had been attracting the interest of all over the world. As the basis of carbon nanotubes, single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) have the better potential prospect in many fields, such as electron nano-devices, single electron devices, energy storage materials and so on. In this paper, the recent developments in the synthesis of SWCNTs were reviewed briefly, which included arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and so on. At the same time, the crucial factors for the growth of SWCNTs were discussed.

Abstract:One of the outstanding challenges in nanotechnology is how to assemble individual nano-objects into macroscopic architectures while preserving their extraordinary properties. For example, the one-dimensional character of electrons in individual carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic transport, optical, and magnetic phenomena, but their macroscopic manifestations have been limited. Here, we describe novel methods for preparing macroscopic films, sheets, and fibers of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and their applications to basic and applied studies. Sufficiently thick films act as ideal terahertz polarizers, and appropriately doped films operate as polarization-sensitive, flexible, powerless, and ultrabroadband photodetectors. Together with recently developed chirality enrichment methods, these developments will allow us to probe, understand, and control dynamic conductivities of interacting one-dimensional electrons in macroscopic single crystals of single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotubes.
Imaging the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive optical spectroscopic study on air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with diameters ranging from 1.7 nm to 3.4 nm and at higher-order optical transitions, a previously inaccessible regime. We establish an atlas of resonant radial breathing modes (RBMs) for more than 100 new SWNTs in this unknown regime, thus significantly extending the RBM dataset in Kataura plot and enhancing our knowledge of SWNTs. Additionally, we develop an innovative transfer technique for manipulating individual SWNTs of known chiralities (determined by optical spectroscopies) by integrating a polarization imaging technique with the conventional van der Waals (vdW) dry transfer. The unprecedented spatial and structural control of this technique enables a deterministic fabrication and integration of a variety of novel mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures that were considered unachievable before. Our work significantly extends RBM dataset of SWNT Kataura plot and represents a huge advancement towards controlled fabrication and integration of mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures encompassing one-dimensional vdW materials.

Abstract:Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit outstanding properties that make them appealing in a wide range of applications. However, their properties are variable depending on the tube helicity (chirality), which has been a challenge for a long time and needs to be effectively controlled. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been made to control the electrical type/chirality of nanotubes through both direct controlled synthesis and postsynthesis separation methods. Driven by these breakthroughs, the applications of separated families of SWCNTs in various fields have emerged as a new topic of research. In this Review, an overview of recent advances in the use of highly purified and well‐separated SWCNTs in a comprehensive range of applications is presented including photovoltaics, transistors, batteries, sensors, light emitters, biological/medical fields, and others. Finally, important future directions for the utilization of separated SWCNTs in these fields are provided.

Abstract:The one-dimensional character of electrons, phonons and excitons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic electronic, thermal and optical properties. However, despite significant efforts to develop ways to produce large-scale architectures of aligned nanotubes, macroscopic manifestations of such properties remain limited. Here, we show that large (>cm2) monodomain films of aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared using slow vacuum filtration. The produced films are globally aligned within ±1.5° (a nematic order parameter of ∼1) and are highly packed, containing 1 × 106 nanotubes in a cross-sectional area of 1 μm2. The method works for nanotubes synthesized by various methods, and film thickness is controllable from a few nanometres to ∼100 nm. We use the approach to create ideal polarizers in the terahertz frequency range and, by combining the method with recently developed sorting techniques, highly aligned and chirality-enriched nanotube thin-film devices. Semiconductor-enriched devices exhibit polarized light emission and polarization-dependent photocurrent, as well as anisotropic conductivities and transistor action with high on/off ratios. Large films of aligned and closely packed single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared through slow vacuum filtration, and used to create terahertz polarizers, thin-film transistors, polarized light emission devices, and polarization-sensitive detectors.

Abstract:After more than a quarter century’s intense research and exploration for their distinctive physical properties and potential applications, carbon nanotubes remain an active research field with many surprises and opportunities. Recent advances in nano-optics provide a powerful tool to optically characterize carbon nanotubes with a defined chiral index at the single-nanotube level. Here we review our recent effort along this direction, including (1) combining transmission electron microscopy and single-nanotube optical spectroscopy to establish an atlas for carbon nanotube optical transitions and (2) developing a high-contrast polarization microscope for real-time optical imaging and in situ spectroscopy of individual nanotubes in devices. We will also discuss the importance of such characterizations for controlled nanotube growth and for understanding chirality-dependent device behaviors.

Abstract:Due to the unique physical and chemical properties of fullerene (C60) molecules, micro/nanostructures of fullerene molecules have exhibited great potential in the field of optoelectronics. The growth process of C60 micro/nanostructures can be controlled fabricated through different preparation approaches, such as liquid-liquid interface precipitation, template method. When adjusting the solvent, temperature and concentration, the morphology and the size of the C60 micro/nanostructures will be changed. Therefore, one-dimensional structure, polygonal structure, nanoflower structure, and mesh structure can be obtained. Due to the low recombination energy and high mobility of C60, it also has good optoelectronic properties, and C60 micro/nanostructures with different morphologies will also affect its optoelectronic properties. In this review, we mainly summarize the C60 micro/nanostructures prepared by different methods and their applications in the field of optoelectronics. In the end, the perspectives for the future development are given, hopefully to provide useful guidance for the future research on C60 micro/nanostructures.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes represent one of the most unique one-dimensional material in the field of nanotechnology. Because of their unique one-dimensionality combined with structure-related electronic and optical properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit rich physics and attractive applications. Through the overview of the typical spectroscopy such as absorption/Rayleigh scattering, photoluminescence spectroscopy and resonance Raman spectroscopy, we summarize recent efforts in probing and modulating excitonic features of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. Finally, we will also discuss the recent advances in the study of single-walled carbon nanotubes for future application in photonics.

Abstract:For over half a century, traditional silicon-based integrated circuits (ICs) have been the basis of computational electronics and are widely used in computers, cell phones, and other fields. With the rapid development of human society, silicon-based semiconductor technology is approaching its physical and engineering limits. Our increasing diversity of non-traditional computing needs, such as ultra-small, ultra-fast, ultra-low-power wearables, and space radiation protection, is driving the search for new electronic materials. Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) have many excellent electrical properties, such as high carrier mobility and high ballistic transport, making them strong candidates for new semiconductor materials in the post-Moore era. Carbon-based electronic technology has been developed for over 20 years, and the fundamental issues such as the material purification of s-SWCNTs, preparation prospects of s-SWCNT-based field-effect transistors (CNT FETs), and device physics based on CNT FETs have been basically solved. However, the chiral diversity of s-SWCNTs may lead to problems such as fluctuations in the electrical performance of CNT FETs, limiting the application of s-SWCNTs in high-end ICs. Monochiral s-SWCNTs not only have excellent electrical properties but also have a controllable structure and uniformity, which are crucial for the high-end IC of CNTs. However, some problems exist in the purity and yield of monochiral s-SWCNT preparation and the optimization of monochiral CNT FETs. Therefore, the chiral sorting of CNTs is reviewed in this paper, and the progress of polymer reprocessing in chiral separation is highlighted. Then, the research progress of monochiral CNT FETs is introduced, and possible development directions are summarized and analyzed. Finally, the application prospects of chiral-enriched s-SWCNTs include challenges and future opportunities.

Abstract:A straightforward and high‐efficiency method is developed for length separation of single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The long SWCNTs can spontaneously precipitate for binary‐surfactant system, which is attributed to the formation of compound micelles by binary surfactants that squeeze the free space of long SWCNTs. This technique is perfectly compatible with various surfactant‐based methods for structure separations of SWCNTs. High‐efficiency extraction of long single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with excellent optoelectronic properties from SWCNT solution is critical for enabling their application in high‐performance optoelectronic devices. Here, a straightforward and high‐efficiency method is reported for length separation of SWCNTs by modulating the concentrations of binary surfactants. The results demonstrate that long SWCNTs can spontaneously precipitate for binary‐surfactant but not for single‐surfactant systems. This effect is attributed to the formation of compound micelles by binary surfactants that squeeze the free space of long SWCNTs due to their large excluded volumes. With this technique, it can readily separate near‐pure long (≥500 nm in length, 99% in content) and short (≤500 nm in length, 98% in content) SWCNTs with separation efficiencies of 26% and 64%, respectively, exhibiting markedly greater length resolution and separation efficiency than those of previously reported methods. Thin‐film transistors fabricated from extracted semiconducting SWCNTs with lengths >500 nm exhibit significantly improved electrical properties, including a 10.5‐fold on‐state current and 14.7‐fold mobility, compared with those with lengths <500 nm. The present length separation technique is perfectly compatible with various surfactant‐based methods for structure separations of SWCNTs and is significant for fabrication of high‐performance electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Aligned, ultralong single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) represent attractive building blocks for nanoelectronics. The structural uniformity along their tube axis and well-ordered two-dimensional architectures on wafer surfaces may provide a straightforward platform for fabricating high-performance SWNT-based integrated circuits. On the way towards future nanoelectronic devices, many challenges for such a specific system also exist. This Review summarizes the recent advances in the synthesis, identification and sorting, transfer printing and manipulation, device fabrication and integration of aligned, ultralong SWNTs in detail together with discussion on their major challenges and opportunities for their practical application.

Abstract:Two paramount challenges in carbon nanotube research are achieving chirality-controlled synthesis and understanding chirality-dependent device physics. High-throughput and in-situ chirality and electronic structural characterization of individual carbon nanotubes is crucial for addressing these challenges. Optical imaging and spectroscopy has unparalleled throughput and specificity, but its realization for single nanotubes on substrates or in devices has long been an outstanding challenge. Here we demonstrate video-rate imaging and in-situ spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes on various substrates and in functional devices using a novel high-contrast polarization-based optical microscopy. Our technique enables the complete chirality profiling of hundreds of as-grown carbon nanotubes. In addition, we in-situ monitor nanotube electronic structure in active field-effect devices, and observe that high-order nanotube optical resonances are dramatically broadened by electrostatic doping. This unexpected behaviour points to strong interband electron-electron scattering processes that can dominate ultrafast dynamics of excited states in carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. We also discuss in detail the utilization of these ultrathin 2D nanomaterials for wide ranges of potential applications among the electronics/optoelectronics, electrocatalysis, batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, photo catalysis, and sensing platforms. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in this promising field are featured on the basis of its current development.

Abstract:More than 20 years after their discovery, our understanding of the growth mechanisms of single-wall carbon nanotubes is still incomplete, in spite of a large number of investigations motivated by potential rewards in many possible applications. Among the many techniques used to solve this challenging puzzle, computer simulations can directly address an atomic scale that is hardly accessible by other experiments, and thereby support or invalidate different ideas, assumptions, or models. In this paper, we review some aspects of the computer simulation and theoretical approaches dedicated to the study of single-wall carbon nanotube growth, and suggest some ways towards a better control of the synthesis processes by chemical vapor deposition.
