Abstract:A series of experiments, including constant amplitude low-cycle fatigue tests, post-fatigue tension to failure tests, LOM (TEM) observations, and SEM examinations, were performed at room-temperature to investigate the effects of low-cycle fatigue damage on the static mechanical properties, microstructures and fracture behavior of 304 austenitic stainless steel. The changing characteristics of various static mechanical property parameters, including the strength parameters (σys and σult), stiffness parameter (E), ductility parameters (δ and φf) and strain hardening exponent (n) during fatigue damage process of the stainless steel were obtained experimentally and their micromechanisms were discussed by analyzing both the deformation microstructures and the fracture features of cyclically pre-deformed specimens. It was shown that the austenite/martensite transformation resulting from the accumulation of cyclic plastic strain was mostly responsible for the variation in the strength, ductility and strain hardening ability of the stainless steel during fatigue damage process. The depletion of the inherent ductility in the material due to fatigue damage evolution led to the ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) in the fracture modes. Based on the macro/micro-experiments regarding the exhaustion of the ductility during fatigue damage, the ductility parameter was suggested as a damage indicating parameter for the present stainless steel in further studying the fatigue damage mechanics model as well as the residual fatigue life prediction method.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue tests were conducted for base metal and weld metal specimens under the total strain range from 2.0％ to 5.0％ in order to analyze the low cycle fatigue properties of Q345qC steel and its welded joint.The low cycle fatigue life prediction curves were fitted based on the Coffin-Manson formula.The accuracy of different fatigue life prediction models were compared combining with the monotonic tensile tests.The crack initiation mechanism of welded joint and the effect of welding defect on fatigue life were analyzed by electron microscope scanning.The low cycle fatigue damage index formulas were derived based on the Miner damage accumulation theory.Results show that the fatigue life of welded joint is only 31％～ 50％ of that of base metal under the same strain level.The cyclic response characteristic of base metal is cyclic stability,while that of welded joint shows cyclic softening.The energy dissipation capacity is similar between base metal and welded joint on half-life stable circulation state.The Coffin-Manson formula has a relatively higher accuracy on both low cycle fatigue and extremely low cycle fatigue life prediction considering the monotonic tensile tests.Welding defect can easily cause fatigue crack initiation,leading to a significant decrease on fatigue life.

Abstract:The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour of SUS304-HP austenitic stainless steel was investigated systematically using tension-compression cycling under fully reversed total strain amplitude control conditions at room temperature in laboratory air. In addition to tests at constant strain amplitudes, incremental step tests (IST) were also carried out. Cyclic stress response, during companion specimen tests (CST), revealed combinations of a variable cyclic hardening, stable behaviour and softening, depending on the applied cyclic strain amplitude, while during incremental step tests it exhibited cyclic hardening character at all strain levels. Microstructure observations using optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that with increasing total strain amplitudes the slip band density increased and the dislocation structure changed from a planar array to a more cellular-like structure. Cyclic deformation-induced austenite/martensite transformation was observed at higher cyclic strain amplitudes. The change in microstructures during cycling is responsible for the fatigue hardening/softening behaviour of the material. The SEM micrographs revealed that at low-strain amplitudes the inclusion-type nucleation occurred near the surface, while at the higher strain amplitudes crack initiation characterized by cleavage cracking occurred not only near the surface but also in the interior of the specimen. Linear or single-slope behaviour was seen both in cyclic stress–strain and Coffin-Mason plots. Masing cyclic stress–strain behaviour was presented only in the IST method but not in the CST method.

Abstract:Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of nickel-based precipitation-strengthened superalloy GH4145/SQ was investigated systematically under fully reversed total strain amplitude control conditions at 538°C in laboratory air. It was shown that the alloy exhibited a pronounced initial fatigue hardening followed by continuous fatigue softening to failure at high strain amplitudes, while at low strain amplitudes the initial hardening was followed by a well-defined saturation stage. Microstructure observations using optical and transmission-electron microscopy revealed that slip band density increased with increasing total strain amplitudes and the size of the γ′precipitates tended to reduction due to repeated shearing by the dislocations with continuous cyclic straining. The above changes in microstructures during cycling were essentially responsible for the fatigue hardening–softening behavior of the alloy. Both optical and SEM micrographs indicated that at low strain amplitudes crack propagation was basically transgranular, while at high strain amplitudes crack propagation was essentially intergranular. Bilinear behavior with a change of slope at a plastic strain amplitude of about 0.2pct was observed in cyclic stress–strain (CSS), Coffin–Manson (C–M) and plastic strain energy–life plots. A change in the number of operating slip systems and the fracture modes with the strain amplitude employed was used to explain this two-slope characteristic. In both the companion specimens test (CST) and the incremental step test (IST) methods the alloy exhibited non-masing type behavior. It was suggested that, for the first approximation, the half-life plastic strain energy could be calculated directly according to the equation without reckoning in the non-masing behavior.

Abstract:This work studied the uniaxial, torsional and multiaxial low cycle fatigue behavior of 316LN stainless steel at 550 °C. Results show that the normalized kernel average misorientation value can be used to describe the loading path non-proportionality quantitatively. The formation of equiaxed and small-sized dislocation cells leads to the occurrence of continuously cyclic hardening under circular loading path. The crack initiation and early crack growth is dominated by intergranular mode in uniaxial test, whereas the transgranular cracking is observed in multiaxial test. Moreover, a weighting factor, evaluating the contribution of shear fatigue damage to the total multiaxial damage is proposed to modify the damage parameter of Chen-Xu-Huang (CXH) life prediction model, which enables all life data falling into the scatter band of 1.5.

Abstract:Continuous and interrupted LCF tests were conducted to reveal the effects of temperature, strain rate and strain amplitude on the LCF behavior of a nitrogen-alloyed 316LN stainless steel. The cyclic hardening and softening behavior at high and low strain amplitudes were elaborately elucidated based on the method of stress decomposition and characterization of dislocation configuration evolution. In addition, the dominant damage mechanism responsible for the different cracking modes under various loading conditions was determined based on the observations of fracture surface and secondary cracks on the longitudinal section.

Abstract:To investigate the low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties of SLM (Selective laser melting) 316L at 550 C high temperature, a series of LCF tests at different strain amplitudes is conducted on SLM 316L and traditional 316L. In contrast to the cyclic hardening behavior of traditional 316L, SLM 316L is shown to have a stable cyclic softening behavior and higher fatigue life due to its higher strength (yield strength is 1.9 times of traditional 316L). The coarsening of cellular sub-structure, evolution of geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) and texture direction contribute to the cyclic softening behavior of SLM 316L. Fractographic observations illustrate that strain amplitude has a significant influence on initiation and propagation of transgranular fatigue cracks, and lack-of-fusion defects near the surface are key initiation sites of fatigue cracks. Additionally, the life prediction method of the non-Masing model is suitable for SLM 316L.

Abstract:A hollow specimen, which can be filled with lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), was designed to study the low cycle fatigue behavior of 316LN stainless steel (SS) in air and LBE at 400 °C. The fatigue life of 316LN SS in liquid LBE only reduced at high strain amplitude (≥0.8%). The fatigue cracks initiated at outer surface in liquid LBE at low strain amplitude and the opposite is true at high strain amplitude. The oxygen concentration has no impact on the fatigue life of 316LN SS in liquid LBE. The corrosion fatigue damage mechanism for 316LN SS in liquid LBE is discussed.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed at various strain amplitudes ranging from 0.2 to 0.8% to investigate the effects of strain amplitude on cyclic softening behavior and LCF lifetime of new ferrtic P92 steel. LCF tests were conducted under strain controlled in fully reversed manner with strain rate of 1.0 × 10−3 s−1 at high temperature of 650 °C. A novel fatigue life end criterion was adopted in this analysis. The effects of strain amplitude on the cyclic softening behavior, the evolution of plastic strain amplitude, hysteresis loop area, and the fatigue life were discussed. Similar softening curves were achieved except for the strain amplitude of 0.2%. The evolution of hysteresis loop areas at the smaller strain range amplitude (less than 0.4%) is contrary to the larger ones. A modified life prediction model was proposed based on Coffin–Manson model and energy‐based model, comparison of predicted lifetime and experimental data shows that the model gives a good estimation. In order to better understand the basic stress‐strain behavior, time‐independent cyclic plasticity model was used to represent the cyclic mechanical behavior of this steel. Comparison of the simulated and experimental results shows that the proposed model can give a reasonable prediction of stress‐strain hysteresis loop for P92 steel at high temperature.

Abstract:In this study, high temperature low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests at 550 degrees C were conducted on LPBF (Laser powder bed fusion) 316L with three different surface states, including the As-built surface (AB), fill contour (FC) manufacturing surface, and the surface combining FC and electropolishing (FC + EP). The effect of surface treatment on the high temperature LCF performance of LPBF 316L was investigated. Experimental results showed that the FC + EP surface treatment had the most significant effect on enhancing life. The difference in enhancing the fatigue life behavior was mainly attributed to the various crack initiation mechanisms with different surface states. The cracks on the surfaces of AB and FC mostly originate from the powder adhesion areas and the boundaries of the melt pool, while FC + EP surface treatment weaken the damage induced by powder adhesion. Furthermore, a parameter representing the fatigue crack propagation driving force that considers the surface condition has been defined, and a proposed life prediction model can provide guidance for surface modification and post-treatment of additive manufacturing materials as well as other metal materials.
Energy-based Low Cycle Fatigue Analysis of Low Yield Point Steels

Abstract:As examples of the new advanced high-performance structural steels, low yield point steels have attracted increasing interest owing to their excellent properties in the technology of energy dissipation and seismic design. Because dynamic cyclic loading is inevitable during service life in engineering applications, it is critical to develop in-depth understanding of the fatigue behavior of this material. Here, the low cycle fatigue behavior of low yield point steels produced in China, namely LY100, LY160, and LY225, is investigated using an energy-based approach. Axial steel coupons are tested by fully reversed and push-pull cyclic loading with a nominal strain ratio R = -1 at a constant strain rate of 0.1% S-1. The strain amplitudes range from 0.5% to 6.0% in 0.5% increments. First, experimental details and results of fatigue life are introduced. Subsequently, using an energy-based approach, the cyclic plastic strain energy, cyclic hysteresis loop properties, and fatigue life prediction are thoroughly analyzed. Finally, a simplified method for fatigue life prediction is proposed. The results show that plastic strain energy density is an important parameter for predicting the low cycle fatigue life of low yield point steels with an acceptable degree of accuracy. The proposed simplified method can provide an effective and reliable alternative for low cycle fatigue life prediction of low yield point steels. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The significant dispersion in fatigue properties is a prevalent attribute observed in metals manufactured by the Additive Manufacturing (AM). To ascertain the safety of components subjected to low cycle fatigue (LCF) loadings at a temperature of 550 degrees C, it is necessary to carry out a fatigue reliability assessment of AM metals. Nevertheless, the number of LCF life tests is limited owing to time-consuming nature of test and high total production cost of AM materials. Such a small size dataset cannot satisfy the criteria of the traditional reliability assessment method. This work aims to develop a novel method to evaluate the LCF reliability of 316L stainless steel manufactured by laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) technology. Firstly, the Weibull model is coupled with the Coffin-Manson-Basquin relationship in order to characterize the dispersion of life data points at various strain levels. Secondly, reliability results from a small size dataset show a maximum relative error in fatigue life of less than 25 %, which is similar to results from a large size dataset and the traditional method using fatigue data from public sources. Among this step, the remora optimization algorithm is firstly applied to calculate the characteristic parameters of newly-proposed method. Thirdly, the LCF reliability of PBFLB/M 316L based on the small size dataset is evaluated. The N95% is equivalent to 44 % of N50%. Finally, the PBFLB/M 316L is compared with traditional 316L considering the reliability. The LCF properties of PBF-LB/M 316L is similar to the traditional 316L at 50 % reliability, however it's slightly worse at 95 % reliability.
Cyclic Deformation and Low-Cycle Fatigue for 316LN Stainless Steel under Non-proportional Loading

Abstract:The effects of loading path and strain amplitude ratio on the cyclic behavior and fatigue life were investigated on a 316LN nuclear grade stainless steel employing a series of symmetrically strain-controlled fatigue tests at room temperature. The loading paths of Uniaxial, Torsional, Proportional, Rhombic, Rectangular, and Circular were employed with the constant equivalent strain amplitude of 0.5%. The strain amplitude ratio of 2.35, 1.73 and 1.27, defined by the ratio of shear strain amplitude to the axial strain amplitude, was realized by changing the shear strain amplitude under Proportional, Rhombic, Rectangular and Elliptical loading paths. As expected, the significant non-proportional additional hardening was observed. It’s interesting to note that the axial cyclic stress response varied with the strain amplitude ratio, and the law was different under different loading paths. The fatigue life of all the tests were evaluated by three critical plane criteria proposed by Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT), Fatemi-Socie (FS) and Chen-Xu-Huang (CXH). Results show that the SWT criterion significantly overestimated the fatigue life of non-proportional loading because the effect of shear damage was not considered. The CXH criterion for tensile-type failure yielded good prediction results except for two torsional data points. The FS criterion provided better predictions than other models.
Fatigue Behavior of 316 L Stainless Steel Weldment Up to Very-High–cycle Fatigue Regime

Abstract:In nuclear power plant, 316 L weldments are widely used in fabricating the primary coolant pipe and in-core components, which usually suffer from very-high-cycle fatigue. Therefore, in this study, the high-cycle fatigue behaviors of 316 L stainless steel with an argon-arc welding joint were studied up to very high-cycle regime by using an ultrasonic fatigue testing system. Microscopic examination indicated that both the base steel and welding seam showed austenitic equiaxed grains. The grain size and micro-hardness values of the welding seam were comparable to those of the base 316 L steel. And heat affect zone was not evidently observed at the weld joint. Fatigue tests showed that fatigue failure still occurred in 10(7)-10(9) cycles, indicating that the conventional fatigue limit does not exist for 316 L weldment. The fatigue strengths of 316 L weldments were close to those of the base 316 L steel. Scanning electron microscopic examinations revealed that multiple fatigue cracks initiated at specimen surface in the high cycle and very-high-cycle fatigue regime. A modified Murakami's model was suggested to take into account the effect of surface roughness and Vickers hardness on fatigue life/ strength of 316 L weldment. The fatigue strength predicted using the proposed model showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Effects of strain amplitude on the isothermal fatigue (IF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) behaviors of 316LN stainless steel were comparatively studied. The physical mechanisms for the evolution of cyclic stress response were revealed based on microstructure characterization. The manifestations of dynamic strain aging (DSA), dependence of DSA intensity on loading modes and influence of DSA on deformation properties were discussed. The dominated damage mechanism changed at the strain amplitude of about 0.27% at which the IF and TMF life curves intersected. The maximum stress was the appropriate damage parameter for life prediction with predicted life falling into the scatter band of 1.5.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the cyclic properties of 316L-type austenitic stainless at 300 and 77 K. The role of nitrogen alloying and of the temperature decrease is examined during low-cycle fatigue (LCF) and fatigue crack propagation. Fatigue resistance is enhanced by the addition of nitrogen in steel at both test temperatures. The results are discussed on the basis of micro-structural observations. Planar slip of dislocations is found in the nitrogen-containing steel and is favored by a decrease in test temperature. To some extent, the influence of interstitial nitrogen on the fatigue properties is related to its role in stabilizing austenite observed during cooling as well as during straining.

Abstract:Low-cycle fatigue behaviors of 316LN stainless steel with three surface roughness were investigated in high-temperature pressurized water at different strain rates (0.001−0.04%/s) under strain amplitude of 0.3%. More significant reduction of fatigue life was found for samples with higher roughness. The environmental fatigue effects with different surface roughness were strain rate dependent and the weakened effect at low strain rates was related to the plastic deformation layers which enhanced the diffusion of Cr and played an inhibiting role on fatigue crack growth. Besides, the fatigue damage mechanisms for polished and rough samples are discussed.

Abstract:Low cycle fatigue tests of original ferritic P92 steel at high temperatures and different strain amplitudes were conducted to investigate its cyclic softening behavior and fracture behavior. LCF tests of strain amplitudes ranging from ±0.2% to ±0.8% were performed in fully reversed manner with constant strain rate at 600 °C and 650 °C. In order to represent the different hysteresis stress-strain curves and the cyclic softening behavior of P92 steel, a cyclic plastic material model was used. In the model, improved nonlinear isotropic hardening parameter was proposed to make better simulation of the cyclic softening behavior. Based on the simulated stress-strain hysteresis loops, an energy-based life prediction model was used to predict the low cycle fatigue life. When compared with experimental responses, the simulations and predicted life were found to be quite reasonable. Low cycle fatigue fractography of the P92 steel was also observed, and it was found to be associated with the different strain amplitudes imposed on the specimen, the larger strain amplitude the more amounts of crack initiation sites could be found.

Abstract:<p>Low-temperature gaseous carburization is a surface modification method for austenitic stainless steels. In order to investigate the effects of low-temperature gaseous carburization on the fatigue behavior of AISI 316L, fully reversed axial fatigue tests were performed at room temperature on specimens with various remaining case depths. The fatigue performance of AISI 316L could be significantly improved; a 15% higher endurance limit is achieved after low-temperature gaseous carburization. After removal of the outer, brittle part of carburized case by electropolishing, the improvement of the fatigue performance is reduced. Fractography showed that for untreated specimens, fatigue cracks always initiated on the surface. For the carburized specimens, however, the locations of crack initiation sites depend on the applied stress levels. Compressive residual stresses in the case move the crack initiation site to the sub-surface; the lower the applied stress, the deeper the initiation site. A quantitative analysis of the effect on fatigue behavior forms the basis for a life prediction model, which can accurately predict the fatigue life of AISI316L steel after low temperature carburization.</p>
