Abstract:Cascade reservoir operation is an interactive process in dealing with the floods of the watershed. There are complex hydrological and hydraulic relations between the upstream and downstream reservoirs. However, current reservoir operating rules do not consider cascade reservoir as a system, leaving the impact of release orders on flood control effects unclear. Therefore, this study proposes three types of cascade reservoir operation modes based on different reservoir release orders: sequential impoundment mode (scheme1, 5), reverse-order impoundment mode (scheme2, 3, 6), and alternate impoundment mode (scheme4, 7). Additionally, the joint improved artificial bee colony and K-means clustering algorithms are adopted to classify floods in the basin. The influence of different impoundment and release orders on the effects of flood regulation in the lower reaches of the Jinshajiang River was discussed. The results show that: 1.The alternate impoundment mode is generally applicable to the three typical floods in the lower reaches of the Jinshajiang River. For the third category of large floods that have the worst operating effect, the peak flow reduction rate (PFRR) can reach up to 41.8% for a flood of once-in-100-year return period. 2. The reverse-order impoundment mode has the best scheduling effect on the second category of large floods,the PFRR can reach up to 41.6% for a 100-year flood. 3. The scheme7 presents evident advantages in the joint flood control of cascade reservoir, achieving an average PFRR of 42.8% for a 100-year flood. Furthermore, the implementation of alternate impoundment mode in the cascade reservoir can effectively alleviate flood control pressure on the Chuanjiang River and make a significant contribution to overall flood control efforts within the Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:To satisfy the increasing multi-objective scheduling requirements in flood season of the Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba - Three Gorges multi-function cascade reservoir system located in the lower reaches of Jinsha River and the upper reaches of Yangze River, and simultaneously solve the key technical problems of the resource utilization of floods by joint optimal scheduling of cascade reservoirs. This paper explorers and presents a scientific solution of joint dynamic control of the reservoirs' operating water level during flood season that suitable for the flood resources comprehensive utilization of the large-scale cascade reservoirs in the Yangtze River Basin. Specifically, the solution is composed of a dynamic control mode for the operating water level of the cascade reservoir during the main flood season (ie, forecast and pre-impounding, grade regulating, and staged discharge control), a phased release theory of the flood control capacity at the end of flood season and a risk analysis model for the decision of the cascade reservoir scheduling. These new technical solutions were successfully applied to the 2016-2019 scheduling practices of the Xiluodu- Xiangjiaba - Three Gorges cascade reservoir system, the world's largest multi-function multi-reservoir system that operation and management by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). The comprehensive benefits of the cascade reservoir in flood control, power generation, shipping, ecology, and the water supply during reservoir impounding and falling periods have been significantly improved, including greatly reducing downstream flood pressure, increasing power generation and water supply, improving navigation condition, promoting fish reproduction. Meanwhile, it also verifies that these new technologies are scientific, practical, universal and have a broad application prospect. Pour satisfaire les exigences croissantes de programmation multiobjectifs pendant la saison des crues du système de réservoirs en cascade multifonction Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba - Trois Gorges situé dans le cours inférieur du fleuve Jinsha et le cours supérieur du fleuve Yangze, et pour résoudre simultanément les principaux problèmes techniques de l'utilisation des ressources des crues par une programmation optimale conjointe des réservoirs en cascade, cet article explore et présente une solution de contrôle dynamique du niveau des réservoirs pendant la saison des crues qui permet la mobilisation complète des ressources des crues à l'échelle globale des réservoirs en cascade dans le bassin du fleuve Yangtze. Plus précisément, la solution est composée d'un mode de contrôle dynamique du niveau d'eau des réservoirs en cascade pendant la saison des crues, d'un modèle de libération progressive de la capacité de contrôle des crues à la fin de la saison des crues et d'un modèle d'analyse des risques pour la décision de la programmation des réservoirs en cascade. Ces nouvelles solutions techniques ont été appliquées avec succès aux pratiques 2016-2019 du système des réservoirs en cascade Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba - Trois Gorges, le plus grand système multiréservoirs multifonctionnel au monde exploité et géré par la China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). Research on reverse order impoundment mode of cascade reservoir flood control system: Case study on upper reaches of Yangtze River

Abstract:Flood control in the Yangtze River Basin has always been a thorny issue in Chinese history. Along with the development of water science and technology, a large number of reservoirs have been constructed in the Yangtze River Basin, especially the progress of the reservoir operation theory, the joint flood control simulation and decision-making of reservoir groups has been applied extensively, which proved an effective way to reduce the flood risks and losses in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. However, an increase in the constraints of the reservoir operation (or a single reservoir becoming a multiple-reservoir system) results in an exponential increase in the computational dimensions of the joint flood control simulation, often referred to as the 'curse of dimensionality'. Therefore, based on the aggregation-decomposition (AGDP) method, this paper proposes a cascaded reservoir group integrated operation mode, namely, the 'reverse order impoundment method of cascade reservoir' (ROIMCR) mode, and adopts the improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm to solve the optimization problem of the ROIMCR mode (IABC-ROIMCR) and establish an optimal operation model for cascade reservoir joint flood control. The results show that: 1. With the 'conventional operation' (CO) mode, the ROIMCR mode has more advantages, the average peak flow reduction rate with 32.89% is higher than that of the CO mode 2.91%. 2. In solving the flood optimization operation problem of the cascade reservoir system, the application of the IABC algorithm can effectively reduce the dimensions in the mathematical mode, and has evident effects. The average peak flow reduction rate in the IABC-ROIMCR mode is 44.87%, and 14.89% higher than those of the CO mode. 3. With the IABC-ROIMCR mode, the flood crest standard of cascade reservoirs can be reduced from a 100-year return period to less than a 5-year period, and the flood crest standard of the Lizhuang Hydrological Station from more than a 50-year return period to less than 5-year period. The flood crest standard of the Zhutuo Hydrological Station can be reduced from a 100-year return period to approximately a 5-year period, thereby greatly improving the flood control standard in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. In addition, the peak inflow to the Three Gorges Reservoir is reduced, and as a result, the flood control pressure in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin is alleviated to a certain extent.

Abstract:The largest cascade reservoirs in the world, namely the cascade reservoirs on the mainstream of Yangtze River (CRMYR) which consists of Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges and Gezhouba reservoirs, have been formed since the completed infrastructure of the Xiangjiaba and Xiluodu power plants in 2012 and 2013, respectively. With the benefits of flood control, power generation, shipping, water supply, ecological environment and so on, the CRMYR has 27.7 billion cubic meters flood control storage, 23.9 billion cubic meters regulating storage and 43835 MW installed capacity. The CRMYR is operated and managed by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). In recent years, based on the operation theory of joint storage and supply orders for cascade reservoir group, CTG carried out a tentative exploration and practice in the field of joint flood control, impounding and water supply for the CRMYR with storgate capacity efficiency method. Results show that the joint operation of the CRMYR is able to not only enhance the water use efficiency, improve the basin ecological environment effectively promote the regional economic and play an important role in Yangtze River Golden Waterway, but also has great influence on the implementation of national clean energy strategy and the development of Yangtze River Economic Zones, while without reducing the safety of the Yangtze River flood control and freshwater resources.

Abstract:Flood disasters are the most frequent and most severe natural disasters in most countries around the world. Reservoir flood operation is an important method to reduce flood losses. When there are multiple reservoirs and flood control points in the basin, it is difficult to use reservoirs separately to fully realize their flood control potential. However, the multi-reservoir joint flood control operation is a multi-objective, multi-constrained, multi-dimensional, nonlinear, and strong-transition feature decision-making problem, and these characteristics make modeling and solving very difficult. Therefore, a large-scale reservoirs flood control operation modeling method is innovatively proposed, and Dynamic Programming (DP) combined with the Progressive Optimality Algorithm (POA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) methods, DP-POA-PSO, are designed to efficiently solve the optimal operation model. The middle and upper Yangtze River was chosen as a case study. Six key reservoirs in the basin were considered, including Xiluodu (XLD), Xiangjiaba (XJB), Pubugou (PBG), Tingzikou (TZK), Goupitan (GPT), and Three Gorges (TG). Studies have shown that DP-POA-PSO can effectively solve the optimal operation model. Compared with the current operation method, the joint flood control optimal operation makes the flood control point reach the flood control standard, moreover, in the event of the flood with a return period of 1000 years, Jingjiang, the most critical flood control point of the Yangtze River, does not require flood diversion, and the volume of flood diversion in Chenglingji is also greatly reduced.

Abstract:Large-scale earthquakes and huge landslide surges may cause the failure of cascade reservoirs, resulting in massive downstream flooding. The flood risk zoning of cascade reservoir dam breaks is crucial for local governments to formulate emergency plans and for individuals to garner their awareness of the flood risks. This paper presents a flood risk zoning approach based on a one-dimensional and two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic model. The flooding area simulated by the coupled hydrodynamic model was divided into a Deadly Zone (D-zone) and an Escape Zone based on whether there is sufficient time for the public to evacuate the danger area under a specific evacuation generation time (EGT). A case study was conducted on the Jinsha-Yalong River (JYR), a confluence river located in Panzhihua City, to map the risk zones. This study considered a dam-break flood in Yalong River encountering two river flood scenarios in Jinsha River (scenario A: the annual average flow; scenario B: a 1000-year return period flood). Two evacuation scenarios (EGT of 30 and 60 min) were also considered; thereafter, four combined evacuation scenarios (A-EGT30, A-EGT60, B-EGT30, and B-EGT60) were simulated. The coupled hydrodynamic model is demonstrated to be effective through the analysis of water balance and hydrographs of special section discharge. The results show that: (1) in comparison to scenario A, scenario B reached its maximum flood extent approximately 5 min earlier, signifying that flood spread speed increases with the increase in flood magnitude; (2) the D-zone area was 127.7 % larger in scenario A-EGT60 compared to A-EGT30 and 120.8 % larger in scenario B-EGT60 compared to B-EGT30. These findings underscore the importance of flood scenarios and EGT on flood risk zones. The proposed risk zoning method can help government agencies in the JYR and major river regions worldwide with flood management and emergency strategy development.

Abstract:Reservoirs play a significant role in water resources management and water resource allocation. Traditional flood limited water level (FLWL) of reservoirs is set as a fixed value which over-considers the reservoir flood control and limits the benefits of reservoirs to a certain extent. However, the dynamic control of the reservoir FLWL is an effective solution. It is a method to temporarily increase the water level of the reservoir during the flood season by using forecast information and discharge capacity, and it can both consider flood control and power generation during the flood season. Therefore, this paper focuses on multi-objective optimal scheduling of dynamic control of FLWL for cascade reservoirs based on multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to get the trade-off between flood control and power generation. A multi-objective optimal scheduling model of dynamic control of FLWL for cascade reservoirs which contains a new dynamic control method is developed, and the proposed model consists of an initialization module, a dynamic control programming module and an optimal scheduling module. In order to verify the effectiveness of the model, a cascade reservoir consisting of seven reservoirs in the Hanjiang Basin of China were selected as a case study. Twenty-four-hour runoff data series for three typical hydrological years were used in this model. At the same time, two extreme schemes were chosen for comparison from optimized scheduling schemes. The comparison result showed that the power generation can be increased by 9.17 × 108 kW·h (6.39%) at most, compared to the original design scheduling scheme, while the extreme risk rate also increased from 0.1% to 0.268%. In summary, experimental results show that the multi-objective optimal scheduling model established in this study can provide decision makers with a set of alternative feasible optimized scheduling schemes by considering the two objectives of maximizing power generation and minimizing extreme risk rate.

Abstract:Abstract Five severe floods occurred in the Yangtze River Basin, China, between July and August 2020, and the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) located in the middle Yangtze River experienced the highest inflow since construction. The world’s largest cascade-reservoir group, which counts for 22 cascade reservoirs in the upper Yangtze River, cooperated in real time to control floods. The cooperation prevented evacuation of 600,000 people and extensive inundations of farmlands and aquacultural areas. In addition, no water spillage occurred during the flood control period, resulting in a world-record annual output of the TGR hydropower station. This work describes decision making challenges in the cooperation of super large reservoir groups based on a case-study, controlling the 4th and 5th floods (from Aug-14 to Aug-22), the efforts of technicians, multi-departments, and the state, and reflects on these. To realize the full potential of reservoir operation for the Yangtze River Basin and other basins with large reservoir groups globally, we suggest: (i) improve flood forecast accuracy with a long leading time; (ii) strengthen and further develop ongoing research on reservoir group cooperation; and (iii) improve and implement institutional mechanisms for coordinated operation of large reservoir groups.

Abstract:Reservoirs play an important role in flood control and conservation, in which the flood control limit level (FCLL) is the most significant parameter of the tradeoff between flood control and comprehensive utilization of water resources. This study was aimed at constraining the seasonal FCLL for cascade reservoirs to obtain more economic benefits without reducing the original flood prevention standards. Based on flood initiation and ending times during the flood season, fuzzy set theory was used to build the experiential and theoretical membership function of each day, which clarified the relationship between the seasonal FCLL and the designed FCLL, and then the total flood season was divided into sub-seasons. The seasonal FCLL was revised by analyzing numerous flood control operation schemes of cascade reservoirs to satisfy a given flood prevention standard. Using the case study of ShiQuqn and XiHe cascade reservoirs in the Hanjiang River, the proposed method was demonstrated to provide an effective design for the seasonal FCLL, which increased the FCLL in the pre-flood and post-flood seasons. Forty-five operation schemes with different combinations of ShiQuqn and XiHe reservoir’s FCLLs under five flooding frequency scenarios were evaluated to revise the seasonal FCLL. An optimization model with real-coded genetic algorithm was proposed to maximize hydropower generation by dynamic control of the FCLL. The results show that compared with the traditional operation, joint operation based on dynamic control of FCLL can generate 0.23 × 108 kWh (3.18%) more hydropower for the cascade reservoir system during the flood season without increasing the flood risk.

Abstract:The existing trade-off between flood control and water conservation measured by flood limited water level (FLWL) during flood season hinders multi-reservoir system from realizing comprehensive benefits. To overcome this barrier, we reasonably allocated the complementary flood prevention storage based on the aggregation-decomposition technique, theoretically deduced the mathematical formula of power generation variation simplified from the cascade reservoir operation model, and dynamically operated reservoir water levels considering the inflow forecasting information. The Wudongde (WDD) ∼ Baihetan (BHT) ∼ Xiluodu (XLD) ∼ Xiangjiaba (XJB) cascade reservoirs in the downstream Jinsha River in China is selected as the case study. Results demonstrate that: (1) The derived power generation function monotonically increases only with the growth of the pre-discharge water volume. (2) The reduced proportion of the flood prevention storage of the WDD (or XJB) is favorable to boost the hydroelectric benefits of the WDD ∼ BHT (or XLD ∼ XJB) cascade reservoirs. Optimal allocation of flood prevention storage can increase 1.933 billion kW∙h power generation annually (+2.15 %) for the WDD ∼ BHT ∼ XLD ∼ XJB cascade reservoirs. (3) Further cooperated with dynamic operation of water levels, the WDD ∼ BHT ∼ XLD ∼ XJB cascade reservoirs can totally generate 5.925 billion kW∙h more hydropower annually (+6.60 %) using effective 5-day lead-time inflow forecasting information, while maintaining the design flood prevention standards.

Abstract:Cascade hydropower stations are effective in water resource utilization, regional water allocation, and flood risk management. Under changing climate conditions, water resources would experience complex temporal and spatial changes, which may lead to various issues relating to flood control and water resource management, and challenge the existing optimal scheduling of cascade hydropower stations. It is thus important to conduct a study on cascade hydropower station scheduling under changing climate conditions. In this study, the Jinsha River rainfall-discharge statistical model is developed based on the statistical relationship between meteorological and runoff indicators. Validation results indicate that the developed model is capable of generating satisfactory simulation results and thus can be used for future Jinsha River runoff projection under climate change. Meanwhile, the Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) is run to project future rainfall in the Jinsha River basin under two General Circulation Models (ECHAM5 and HadAM3P), two scenarios (A1B and B2), and four periods (1961-1990, 1991-2020, 2021-2050, and 2051-2099). The regional climate modeling data are analyzed and then fed into the Jinsha hydrological model to analyze the trends of future discharge at Xiangjiaba Hydro Station. Adaptive scheduling strategies for cascade hydropower stations are discussed based on the future inflow trend analysis and current flood scheduling mode. It is suggested that cascade hydropower stations could be operated at flood limited water level (FLWL) during 2021-2099. In addition, the impoundment of cascade hydropower stations should be properly delayed during the post-flood season in response to the possible occurrence of increased and extended inflow in wet seasons.
Comparative Analysis and Risk Assessment of Dam-Break Floods: Taking Pingshuijiang Reservoir As an Example

Abstract:Due to the huge potential energy associated with water storage in reservoirs, dam-break floods are often catastrophically destructive for people and structures downstream. This study aims to simulate and compare floods generated under various dam-break scenarios and their downstream impacts, taking Pingshuijiang Reservoir in southeastern China as an example. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model is used to simulate the downstream evolution of floods under three dam-break scenarios, and the breach flood and downstream inundation process are analyzed. Gradual failure of the main dam leads to near-total inundation of the nearby town over c. 1 h, allowing time for warning and evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the main dam results in larger peak flow, greater submergence depth and faster inundation (20 min), leaving little time for warning/evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the auxiliary dam generates a much lower peak flow magnitude and, although the town is still largely submerged within 45 min, the shallow water depth and low velocity are conducive to rescue/evacuation. The results show significant variation in flood process and submergence due to dam size and failure mode that provide guidance for dam-break flood risk assessment and disaster avoidance planning.

Abstract:With climate change and urbanization development, urban areas are facing more serious floods. As a result, hydrological and hydrodynamic models have recently shown a broad application prospect in urban flood simulating and forecasting. For the area with rich inland rivers, urban water resources can be effectively regulated and redistributed through river networks and hydraulic structures scheduling. However, the lack of research on the effect of scheduling becomes a major limitation in model applications. Based on a coupled hydrodynamics model, the current study simulates the flooding response to the combined rainstorm and scheduling scenarios and analyzes the river overflow at the community scale. The result indicated that three local regions in the Jin'an study area are inundated easily. The locations near Qinting Lake were more sensitive to the water regulation rules than others. In the model of control on Qinting Lake, section A is more sensitive to the schedule control than section B, while for section A, the water level increased by 1.44% under the return period (RP) (10 a), and the rate changed to 2.64% under the RP (100 a). The differences in inundation from various scenarios are relatively small. In the mode of joint discharge rules under RP (50 a), the water level changed by 4.77% in section A and 1.24% in section B. The simulation at the community scale considers the overflow process, and the results indicated that the total inundation area decreased by 12.8 ha under joint schedules. The significant effects to alleviate urban inundation mainly come from the decreased flood overflow from the channel, but not from the flooding nodes. This study provides promising references for urban flood management.

Abstract:The lower reaches of Jinsha River host the richest hydropower energy sources in China. With the construction of Wudongde and Baihetan, the multi-objective optimization for cascade reservoirs (along with Xiluodu and Xiangjia Dam) in the lower reaches of Jinsha River will create significant benefits. This paper focuses on the competitive relationship between flood control and power generation, and attaches attention to the measurement of different objective functions and their competitive relationship. With observations of the flood in 1974, 1981, and 1985, a 100-year return period flood with peak-3d volume pair as different inputs for the optimal model is approached by NSGA-II. Different flood seasons divided by flood feature is applied to figure out specific competitive relationship. The results can be concluded as the following: (1) Strong competitive relationship mainly occurs in pre-flood season. (2) Whether it shows a strong competitive relationship depends on the amount of discharge. If the turbine is set to full capacity, power generation is fulfilled certainly, which means that there exists a weak competitive relationship between multi-objectives. (3) The different processes of floods have an effect on the duration of a competitive relationship. A flood with a late peak causes the extension of strong competition in the pre-flood season, which lends itself to a strong competition relationship in the post-flood season. (4) The intensity of competition in the pre-flood season is higher than that in the post-flood season because it has a larger range.

Abstract:The coordinative operation rules as well as the sequences of water releasing and storing are key issues in the joint reservoirs operation. Based on the discussion of the methodology and technology for deter?mining optimal operation rules of reservoirs,and the multi-objective coordination recommendation in the pa?per of“A multi-reservoir operation optimization model and application in the upper Yangtze River Basin I. Principle and solution of the model”,the joint operation rule charts and their application conditions are an?alyzed and concluded statistically with a long-term cooperation and an average hydrological condition over 48 years. According to the long-term cooperation, the water releasing and storing sequence of reservoirs are further discussed here. It is concluded that there are certain statistical water releasing and storing se?quences for the 11 reservoirs with large water storage and flood control capacities. The optimized water re?leasing sequence with a largest possibility is Sanxia,Shuibuya,Jinpingyiji,Ertan/Xiluodu/Goupitan,Pubugou/Zipingpu,and then Xiangjiaba/Baozhusi/Geheyan;and the optimized water storing sequence with a largest possibility is Jinpingyiji, Ertan/Shuibuya, Geheyan, Xiluodu/Pubugou/Zipingpu/Baozhusi/Goupitan, Xiangjia?ba,and then Sanxia. It is also concluded that for the series of cascade reservoirs the upper reservoir releas?es water before the lower one, and even the upper reservoirs store water earlier but should be full filled later than the lower one.

Abstract:Abstract The Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges and Gezhouba cascade hydropower stations, which located at the lower reaches of Jinsha River and the upper reaches of Yangtze River, plays a very important role in the electrical power system in China. To optimize and solve the joint power generation problem of the cascade system with highly complex constraints, hydraulic relationship and multiple dispatching objectives, this research focus on: (1) a mid-and-long term power generation optimization model for the cascade system is established, considering hydraulic and electricty connections, as well as the flood control, water supply and ecology objectives; (2) an improved LSSDC-DDDP hybrid optimization framework, based on the theory of large-scale system decomposition coordination (LSSDC) and the discrete differential dynamic programming (DDDP), is designed to well solving the proposed optimization model. In the optimization framework, a relative coefficient is used to calculate the coordination factor among subsystems (a single hydropower station); meanwhile, an adaptive corridor and a bias corridor are adopted to enhance convergence speed of DDDP. The optimization model is applied in the dispatching calculation of the cascade system using the 2015-2017 actual runoff conditions, respectively. The results indicate that joint optimal dispatching of the cascade system can theoretically increase its yearly total power generation benefit about 2.73 billion yuan on average, simultaneously satisfying the requirements of downstream water supply and improving the total firm output guarantee rate of the system.

Abstract:Floodwater utilization through dynamic operating flood limited water levels (FLWLs) of reservoirs plays an important role in flood control and water conservation. This study proposes a risk-based aggregation-decomposition method for floodwater utilization of a complex multi-reservoir system. The original system is decomposed into four basic configurations. For the subsystem with hydraulic connections, the upper bound of FLWL of each reservoir is identified based on a given risk level for the subsystem and risk hedging between reservoirs. A stochastic programming model to maximize hydropower generation is then established for joint operation of the multi-reservoir system to find and update the optimal operation strategy during flood seasons. The mixed cascade reservoirs in the Pi River Basin are selected as a case study. The application results are compared with those of the original design model and deterministic operation model without considering risk, which shows that joint operation and dynamic control of FLWLs: 1) significantly increases the power generation and improves the utilization rate of floodwaters compared to those of the original design model; 2) power production rate increases with the acceptable risk but the increasing rate between them decreases with higher levels of risk; 3) results in lower utilization rate of floodwaters compared to that of the deterministic model, but the difference is not significant. The proposed method provides a framework for risk-based decision-making in floodwater utilization to enhance the comprehensive benefits of a multi-reservoir system.

Abstract:<p>The dynamic control of reservoir water level during flood seasons (WLFS) allows a trade‐off between flood control and water resources conservation. In this process, the WLFS dynamic control boundaries are key parameters. The channel flood routing affects the dynamic control operations. However, flood routing is seldom considered in multi‐reservoir aggregation (a popular method for tackling the curse of dimensionality in multi‐reservoir issues). To address this knowledge gap, this study conceptualises channel flood routing as a virtual channel storage reservoir (CSR) based on Muskingum flood routing in the aggregation method. The dynamic control boundaries for the multi‐reservoir WLFS are then derived using the following aggregation‐decomposition method: (a) the aggregation reservoir is created by considering channel storages, and the flood risk is quantified using pre‐discharge rules; and (b) the aggregated reservoir storages are decomposed by maximising hydropower generation with constraints. The Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba and Three Gorges reservoir system on the Yangtze River, China, were selected for a case study. The annual power generation is 175.40 billion kWh when using static operation rules. With dynamic operation, the output would be 177.05 billion kWh if CSRs were not considered and 177.53 billion kWh if CSRs were considered. Thus, the proposed method can efficiently determine the dynamic control boundaries for the multi‐reservoir WLFS.</p>

Abstract:Changes in rainfall and streamflow due to climate change have an adverse impact on hydropower generation reliability and scheduling of cascade hydropower stations. To estimate the impact of climate change on hydropower, a combination of climate, hydrological, and hydropower scheduling models is needed. Here, we take the Jinsha River as an example to estimate the impact of climate change on total power generation of the cascade hydropower stations and residual load variance of the power grid. These two goals are solved by applying an improved multi-objective cuckoo search algorithm, and a variety of strategies for the optimal dispatch of hydropower stations are adopted to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Using streamflow prediction results of CMIP5 climate data, in conjunction with the Xinanjiang model, the estimated results for the next 30 years were obtained. The results indicated that the negative correlation between total power generation and residual load variance under the RCP 2.6 scenario was weaker than that under the RCP 8.5. Moreover, the average power generation and the average residual load variance in RCP 2.6 was significantly larger than that in RCP 8.5. Thus, reducing carbon emissions is not only beneficial to ecological sustainability, but also has a positive impact on hydropower generation. Our approaches are also applicable for cascade reservoirs in other river catchments worldwide to estimate impact of climate change on hydropower development.
