Abstract:Due to the huge potential energy associated with water storage in reservoirs, dam-break floods are often catastrophically destructive for people and structures downstream. This study aims to simulate and compare floods generated under various dam-break scenarios and their downstream impacts, taking Pingshuijiang Reservoir in southeastern China as an example. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model is used to simulate the downstream evolution of floods under three dam-break scenarios, and the breach flood and downstream inundation process are analyzed. Gradual failure of the main dam leads to near-total inundation of the nearby town over c. 1 h, allowing time for warning and evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the main dam results in larger peak flow, greater submergence depth and faster inundation (20 min), leaving little time for warning/evacuation. Instantaneous failure of the auxiliary dam generates a much lower peak flow magnitude and, although the town is still largely submerged within 45 min, the shallow water depth and low velocity are conducive to rescue/evacuation. The results show significant variation in flood process and submergence due to dam size and failure mode that provide guidance for dam-break flood risk assessment and disaster avoidance planning.

Abstract:Cascade reservoir operation is an interactive process in dealing with the floods of the watershed. There are complex hydrological and hydraulic relations between the upstream and downstream reservoirs. However, current reservoir operating rules do not consider cascade reservoir as a system, leaving the impact of release orders on flood control effects unclear. Therefore, this study proposes three types of cascade reservoir operation modes based on different reservoir release orders: sequential impoundment mode (scheme1, 5), reverse-order impoundment mode (scheme2, 3, 6), and alternate impoundment mode (scheme4, 7). Additionally, the joint improved artificial bee colony and K-means clustering algorithms are adopted to classify floods in the basin. The influence of different impoundment and release orders on the effects of flood regulation in the lower reaches of the Jinshajiang River was discussed. The results show that: 1.The alternate impoundment mode is generally applicable to the three typical floods in the lower reaches of the Jinshajiang River. For the third category of large floods that have the worst operating effect, the peak flow reduction rate (PFRR) can reach up to 41.8% for a flood of once-in-100-year return period. 2. The reverse-order impoundment mode has the best scheduling effect on the second category of large floods,the PFRR can reach up to 41.6% for a 100-year flood. 3. The scheme7 presents evident advantages in the joint flood control of cascade reservoir, achieving an average PFRR of 42.8% for a 100-year flood. Furthermore, the implementation of alternate impoundment mode in the cascade reservoir can effectively alleviate flood control pressure on the Chuanjiang River and make a significant contribution to overall flood control efforts within the Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:Flood control in the Yangtze River Basin has always been a thorny issue in Chinese history. Along with the development of water science and technology, a large number of reservoirs have been constructed in the Yangtze River Basin, especially the progress of the reservoir operation theory, the joint flood control simulation and decision-making of reservoir groups has been applied extensively, which proved an effective way to reduce the flood risks and losses in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. However, an increase in the constraints of the reservoir operation (or a single reservoir becoming a multiple-reservoir system) results in an exponential increase in the computational dimensions of the joint flood control simulation, often referred to as the 'curse of dimensionality'. Therefore, based on the aggregation-decomposition (AGDP) method, this paper proposes a cascaded reservoir group integrated operation mode, namely, the 'reverse order impoundment method of cascade reservoir' (ROIMCR) mode, and adopts the improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm to solve the optimization problem of the ROIMCR mode (IABC-ROIMCR) and establish an optimal operation model for cascade reservoir joint flood control. The results show that: 1. With the 'conventional operation' (CO) mode, the ROIMCR mode has more advantages, the average peak flow reduction rate with 32.89% is higher than that of the CO mode 2.91%. 2. In solving the flood optimization operation problem of the cascade reservoir system, the application of the IABC algorithm can effectively reduce the dimensions in the mathematical mode, and has evident effects. The average peak flow reduction rate in the IABC-ROIMCR mode is 44.87%, and 14.89% higher than those of the CO mode. 3. With the IABC-ROIMCR mode, the flood crest standard of cascade reservoirs can be reduced from a 100-year return period to less than a 5-year period, and the flood crest standard of the Lizhuang Hydrological Station from more than a 50-year return period to less than 5-year period. The flood crest standard of the Zhutuo Hydrological Station can be reduced from a 100-year return period to approximately a 5-year period, thereby greatly improving the flood control standard in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. In addition, the peak inflow to the Three Gorges Reservoir is reduced, and as a result, the flood control pressure in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin is alleviated to a certain extent.

Abstract:The lower reaches of Jinsha River host the richest hydropower energy sources in China. With the construction of Wudongde and Baihetan, the multi-objective optimization for cascade reservoirs (along with Xiluodu and Xiangjia Dam) in the lower reaches of Jinsha River will create significant benefits. This paper focuses on the competitive relationship between flood control and power generation, and attaches attention to the measurement of different objective functions and their competitive relationship. With observations of the flood in 1974, 1981, and 1985, a 100-year return period flood with peak-3d volume pair as different inputs for the optimal model is approached by NSGA-II. Different flood seasons divided by flood feature is applied to figure out specific competitive relationship. The results can be concluded as the following: (1) Strong competitive relationship mainly occurs in pre-flood season. (2) Whether it shows a strong competitive relationship depends on the amount of discharge. If the turbine is set to full capacity, power generation is fulfilled certainly, which means that there exists a weak competitive relationship between multi-objectives. (3) The different processes of floods have an effect on the duration of a competitive relationship. A flood with a late peak causes the extension of strong competition in the pre-flood season, which lends itself to a strong competition relationship in the post-flood season. (4) The intensity of competition in the pre-flood season is higher than that in the post-flood season because it has a larger range.

Abstract:The existing trade-off between flood control and water conservation measured by flood limited water level (FLWL) during flood season hinders multi-reservoir system from realizing comprehensive benefits. To overcome this barrier, we reasonably allocated the complementary flood prevention storage based on the aggregation-decomposition technique, theoretically deduced the mathematical formula of power generation variation simplified from the cascade reservoir operation model, and dynamically operated reservoir water levels considering the inflow forecasting information. The Wudongde (WDD) ∼ Baihetan (BHT) ∼ Xiluodu (XLD) ∼ Xiangjiaba (XJB) cascade reservoirs in the downstream Jinsha River in China is selected as the case study. Results demonstrate that: (1) The derived power generation function monotonically increases only with the growth of the pre-discharge water volume. (2) The reduced proportion of the flood prevention storage of the WDD (or XJB) is favorable to boost the hydroelectric benefits of the WDD ∼ BHT (or XLD ∼ XJB) cascade reservoirs. Optimal allocation of flood prevention storage can increase 1.933 billion kW∙h power generation annually (+2.15 %) for the WDD ∼ BHT ∼ XLD ∼ XJB cascade reservoirs. (3) Further cooperated with dynamic operation of water levels, the WDD ∼ BHT ∼ XLD ∼ XJB cascade reservoirs can totally generate 5.925 billion kW∙h more hydropower annually (+6.60 %) using effective 5-day lead-time inflow forecasting information, while maintaining the design flood prevention standards.

Abstract:Large-scale earthquakes and huge landslide surges may cause the failure of cascade reservoirs, resulting in massive downstream flooding. The flood risk zoning of cascade reservoir dam breaks is crucial for local governments to formulate emergency plans and for individuals to garner their awareness of the flood risks. This paper presents a flood risk zoning approach based on a one-dimensional and two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic model. The flooding area simulated by the coupled hydrodynamic model was divided into a Deadly Zone (D-zone) and an Escape Zone based on whether there is sufficient time for the public to evacuate the danger area under a specific evacuation generation time (EGT). A case study was conducted on the Jinsha-Yalong River (JYR), a confluence river located in Panzhihua City, to map the risk zones. This study considered a dam-break flood in Yalong River encountering two river flood scenarios in Jinsha River (scenario A: the annual average flow; scenario B: a 1000-year return period flood). Two evacuation scenarios (EGT of 30 and 60 min) were also considered; thereafter, four combined evacuation scenarios (A-EGT30, A-EGT60, B-EGT30, and B-EGT60) were simulated. The coupled hydrodynamic model is demonstrated to be effective through the analysis of water balance and hydrographs of special section discharge. The results show that: (1) in comparison to scenario A, scenario B reached its maximum flood extent approximately 5 min earlier, signifying that flood spread speed increases with the increase in flood magnitude; (2) the D-zone area was 127.7 % larger in scenario A-EGT60 compared to A-EGT30 and 120.8 % larger in scenario B-EGT60 compared to B-EGT30. These findings underscore the importance of flood scenarios and EGT on flood risk zones. The proposed risk zoning method can help government agencies in the JYR and major river regions worldwide with flood management and emergency strategy development.
On the Real-Time Evaluation of the Storage-Discharge Relationship in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

Abstract:Using the flood control system in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River as study objects,a numerical model for the real-time evaluation of the storage-discharge relationship in the rivers and lakes of the reaches is presented.The model is a further development of the flow-sediment transport model for the purpose of flood control planning.The model is used to assess the flood prevention schemes for the reaches in this study.To accommodate the needs of quickly and accurately evaluating the storage-discharge relationship in real-time,we propose an iterative scrolling algorithm and calibration techniques,as well as an experimental procedure for flood control operation based on hydrodynamics.The real-time evaluation objective can thus be achieved.We discuss the coupling between the flood model and the flood control operation model in the context of numerical study of the real-time evaluation of the storage-discharge relationship in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.A trial operation of the numerical model is conducted during the Yangtze River flooding seasons.The result shows that the numerical model is able to effectively address key issues that arise from executing the real-time evaluation of the storage-discharge relationship,and from optimizing the flood control projects.The result provides the theoretical basis for flood control planning and real-time flood operations.Our results have been used in the planning of flood control projects and flood operations for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Abstract:In the present study of hydraulic features and simulation analysis of the Three Gorges reservoir(TGR),we find that the reservoir will form a backwater region of 700km long and that its storage capacity will take strongly dynamic features.Its pool surface is not horizontal as regular reservoirs,and the time variation of its storage volume does not depend on the water level of the dam front.Computation error of water discharge from the reservoir during a flood event by the static storage method could be up to 50%.The study also reveals that the water level in front of the dam varies more rapidly than the average pool level,and hence it can be easily controlled by means of regulations.This is a valuable feature for flood control and hydropower operations.

Abstract:After the Yangtze River was closed by the Three Gorges Project (TGP) in 2003, erosion occurred from the dam site to the river mouth, especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. However, in some local areas of Chenglingji reach which holds the key position for flood management, there is actually deposition in contrast to the expected erosion. In this paper, a one dimensional mathematical model of the river network with sediment transport is used as the tool to simulate flow and fluvial processes. The calculation domain is from Yichang, which is downstream of the dam, to Hankou, the controlling node of flood management, 694 km long in total. The model is calibrated based on the field data of hydrology and sediment transport during the period from October 2003 to October 2008. Then the model is utilized to simulate the erosion and deposition of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in the next two decades, and produce the results of a new river channel after river bed deformation occurs. The typical flood processes of 1954 and 1998 in the Yangtze River basin are used to check the flood management scheme for the research area, and results show that water storage of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) and a flood diversion program downstream of the Yangtze River should be taken into consideration. Abstract:To satisfy the increasing multi-objective scheduling requirements in flood season of the Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba - Three Gorges multi-function cascade reservoir system located in the lower reaches of Jinsha River and the upper reaches of Yangze River, and simultaneously solve the key technical problems of the resource utilization of floods by joint optimal scheduling of cascade reservoirs. This paper explorers and presents a scientific solution of joint dynamic control of the reservoirs' operating water level during flood season that suitable for the flood resources comprehensive utilization of the large-scale cascade reservoirs in the Yangtze River Basin. Specifically, the solution is composed of a dynamic control mode for the operating water level of the cascade reservoir during the main flood season (ie, forecast and pre-impounding, grade regulating, and staged discharge control), a phased release theory of the flood control capacity at the end of flood season and a risk analysis model for the decision of the cascade reservoir scheduling. These new technical solutions were successfully applied to the 2016-2019 scheduling practices of the Xiluodu- Xiangjiaba - Three Gorges cascade reservoir system, the world's largest multi-function multi-reservoir system that operation and management by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). The comprehensive benefits of the cascade reservoir in flood control, power generation, shipping, ecology, and the water supply during reservoir impounding and falling periods have been significantly improved, including greatly reducing downstream flood pressure, increasing power generation and water supply, improving navigation condition, promoting fish reproduction. Meanwhile, it also verifies that these new technologies are scientific, practical, universal and have a broad application prospect. Plus précisément, la solution est composée d'un mode de contrôle dynamique du niveau d'eau des réservoirs en cascade pendant la saison des crues, d'un modèle de libération progressive de la capacité de contrôle des crues à la fin de la saison des crues et d'un modèle d'analyse des risques pour la décision de la programmation des réservoirs en cascade. Ces nouvelles solutions techniques ont été appliquées avec succès aux pratiques 2016-2019 du système des réservoirs en cascade Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba - Trois Gorges, le plus grand système multiréservoirs multifonctionnel au monde exploité et géré par la China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). Les avantages des réservoirs en cascade dans le contrôle des crues, la production d'électricité, la navigation, l'écologie et l'approvisionnement en eau pendant les périodes de retenue et de chute du réservoir ont été considérablement améliorés, notamment en réduisant considérablement la pression des crues en aval, en augmentant la production d'électricité et l'approvisionnement en eau, en améliorant les conditions de navigation, en favorisant la reproduction des poissons. Joint operation of cascade reservoirs on the mainstream of Yangtze River

Abstract:The largest cascade reservoirs in the world, namely the cascade reservoirs on the mainstream of Yangtze River (CRMYR) which consists of Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges and Gezhouba reservoirs, have been formed since the completed infrastructure of the Xiangjiaba and Xiluodu power plants in 2012 and 2013, respectively. With the benefits of flood control, power generation, shipping, water supply, ecological environment and so on, the CRMYR has 27.7 billion cubic meters flood control storage, 23.9 billion cubic meters regulating storage and 43835 MW installed capacity. The CRMYR is operated and managed by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG). In recent years, based on the operation theory of joint storage and supply orders for cascade reservoir group, CTG carried out a tentative exploration and practice in the field of joint flood control, impounding and water supply for the CRMYR with storgate capacity efficiency method. Results show that the joint operation of the CRMYR is able to not only enhance the water use efficiency, improve the basin ecological environment effectively promote the regional economic and play an important role in Yangtze River Golden Waterway, but also has great influence on the implementation of national clean energy strategy and the development of Yangtze River Economic Zones, while without reducing the safety of the Yangtze River flood control and freshwater resources.

Analysis of role of Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations in flood control of middle and lower Yangtze River

Abstract:A brief description of Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations is given firstly.For the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River with numerous branches and characterized by complex flood composition,the design flood is determined based on several typical floods.The flood control and operation mode of the Three Gorges Reservoir is expounded;and the joint operation mode of Xiluodu,Xiangjiaba and Three Gorges reservoirs is analyzed.For this,a flood routing mathematical model is used to calculate the change of excess flood in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in case of different frequencies of flood events before and after the Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations are put into operation;and the role of Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations in flood control of the middle and lower Yangtze River is analyzed.Studies have shown that after the Three Gorges Project is built,the construction of Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations will further reduce the excess flood in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in case of flood events so as to improve the flood control situation of the middle and lower Yangtze River.

Evaluating Functions of Reservoirs′ Storage Capacities and Locations on Daily Peak Attenuation for Ganjiang River Basin Using Xinanjiang Model

Abstract:Flooding is the most prevalent and costly natural disaster in the world and building reservoirs is one of the major structural measures for flood control and management. In this paper, a framework was proposed to evaluate functions of reservoirs′ locations and magnitudes on daily peak flow attenuation for a large basin of China, namely Ganjiang River Basin. In this study, the Xinanjiang model was adopted to simulate inflows of the reservoirs and flood hydrographs of all sub-catchments of the basin, and simple reservoir operation rules were established for calculating outflows of the reservoirs. Four reservoirs scenarios were established to analyze reservoirs′ locations on daily peak flow attenuation. The results showed that: 1) reservoirs attenuated the peak discharges for all simulated floods, when the flood storage capacities increase as new reservoirs were built, the peak discharge attenuation by reservoirs showed an increasing tendency both in absolute and relative measures; 2) reservoirs attenuated more peak discharge relatively for small floods than for large ones; 3) reservoirs reduced the peak discharge more efficiently for the floods with single peak or multi peaks with main peak occurred first; and 4) effect of upstream reservoirs on peak attenuation decreased from upper reaches to lower reaches; upstream and midstream reservoirs played important roles in decreasing peak discharge both at middle and lower reaches, and downstream reservoirs had less effect on large peak discharge attenuation at outlet of the basin. The proposed framework of evaluating functions of multiple reservoirs′ storage capacities and locations on peak attenuation is valuable for flood control planning and management at basin scale.
Application of HEC-RAS Flood Routing Model in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Abstract:During the routing process to the lower reach of the Three Gorges Reservoir,the peak of flood generated in the upper watershed of the reservoir decreased as the storage effect of the reservoir.The decrease was masked by the lateral runoff from the Three Gorges Area,which hinders the research of the storage effect that the flood received.Based on the HEC-RAS flood routing model applied in the reservoir,209 events during 1989 to 2000 were simulated.Simulated routing time was verified with the observed and recorded routing time,in which routing time was calculated by the time moment difference between the hydrograph of the upper and lower cross section.The verification was carried out in the four parts of the mainstream,which was divided by 5 gauge stations.The model was also applied to simulate the reservoir stage during the water storage period from 2006 to 2007.The results showed that the stage process was simulated accurately,in which the highest stage error was within 0.2 meter.The model was then applied to simulate the flood peak decreasing in the four parts of the reservoir to analysis the storage effect difference among the different reservoir parts.

Abstract:Reservoirs play an important role in flood control and conservation, in which the flood control limit level (FCLL) is the most significant parameter of the tradeoff between flood control and comprehensive utilization of water resources. This study was aimed at constraining the seasonal FCLL for cascade reservoirs to obtain more economic benefits without reducing the original flood prevention standards. Based on flood initiation and ending times during the flood season, fuzzy set theory was used to build the experiential and theoretical membership function of each day, which clarified the relationship between the seasonal FCLL and the designed FCLL, and then the total flood season was divided into sub-seasons. The seasonal FCLL was revised by analyzing numerous flood control operation schemes of cascade reservoirs to satisfy a given flood prevention standard. Using the case study of ShiQuqn and XiHe cascade reservoirs in the Hanjiang River, the proposed method was demonstrated to provide an effective design for the seasonal FCLL, which increased the FCLL in the pre-flood and post-flood seasons. Forty-five operation schemes with different combinations of ShiQuqn and XiHe reservoir’s FCLLs under five flooding frequency scenarios were evaluated to revise the seasonal FCLL. An optimization model with real-coded genetic algorithm was proposed to maximize hydropower generation by dynamic control of the FCLL. The results show that compared with the traditional operation, joint operation based on dynamic control of FCLL can generate 0.23 × 108 kWh (3.18%) more hydropower for the cascade reservoir system during the flood season without increasing the flood risk.

Abstract:The Yangtze River is one of the largest and most important rivers in the world. Over the past several decades, the flow regime of the Yangtze River has been altered by human activities, particularly dam construction. Hydrological regimes will be further influenced due to more dams that have been planned and are being built in the upper reach of the Yangtze River (URYR). In this context, to assess the impacts of cascade dam development on the natural flows, four different scenarios of the reservoirs' combination are simulated with a hydrological model (the Soil and Water Assessment Tool) in the URYR. Flow regime changes were investigated using the eco-flow metrics and minimum/optimal ecological flow with the simulated daily river flows. The results indicate that eco-surplus in low flows and eco-deficit in high flows greatly increases due to reservoir operations when more reservoirs are put into service. The minimum ecological flow and the optimal ecological flow cannot be guaranteed from September to November, which is a crucial time for fish spawning. To maintain the natural regime while meeting the requirements for the river ecosystem, we propose that the lower and satisfactory operation limits are 11,680m3/s and 7235m3/s and 16,300m3/s and 9130m3/s, respectively. Optimizing cascade reservoir operational rules is needed to achieve a better balance between ecological and socio-economic demands in the Yangtze River Basin.

Abstract:The coordinative operation rules as well as the sequences of water releasing and storing are key issues in the joint reservoirs operation. Based on the discussion of the methodology and technology for deter?mining optimal operation rules of reservoirs,and the multi-objective coordination recommendation in the pa?per of“A multi-reservoir operation optimization model and application in the upper Yangtze River Basin I. Principle and solution of the model”,the joint operation rule charts and their application conditions are an?alyzed and concluded statistically with a long-term cooperation and an average hydrological condition over 48 years. According to the long-term cooperation, the water releasing and storing sequence of reservoirs are further discussed here. It is concluded that there are certain statistical water releasing and storing se?quences for the 11 reservoirs with large water storage and flood control capacities. The optimized water re?leasing sequence with a largest possibility is Sanxia,Shuibuya,Jinpingyiji,Ertan/Xiluodu/Goupitan,Pubugou/Zipingpu,and then Xiangjiaba/Baozhusi/Geheyan;and the optimized water storing sequence with a largest possibility is Jinpingyiji, Ertan/Shuibuya, Geheyan, Xiluodu/Pubugou/Zipingpu/Baozhusi/Goupitan, Xiangjia?ba,and then Sanxia. It is also concluded that for the series of cascade reservoirs the upper reservoir releas?es water before the lower one, and even the upper reservoirs store water earlier but should be full filled later than the lower one.
Large-scale 3D Numerical Modelling of Flood Propagation and Sediment Transport and Operational Strategy in the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Abstract:Sediment deposition carried by flood flow is the main cause of reservoir sedimentation. This can be reduced by an appropriate operational strategy of flood flow and sediment in the reservoir. High-precision and large-scale hydrodynamic models to predict flood propagation and sediment transport in reservoirs are extremely important for an efficient flood forecasting and real-time joint regulation of water and sediment in reservoirs. In the present study, the three-dimensional (3D) numerical semi-implicit cross-scale hydroscience integrated system model (SCHISM) was adopted to model the flood propagation and sediment transport in the approximately 280km-long reach in the Three Gorges Reservoir. This model is mainly focused on analysing the asynchronous movement characteristics of flood propagation and sediment transport and the operational strategy of sediment peak regulation. The flood event in July 2013 was reproduced by the numerical model, which was validated by a comparison with the measured data. The results indicated that the numerical model has the ability to accurately simulate the flood propagation and sediment transport processes. The time that the sediment peak lags behind the flow discharge peak increases as the flood waves propagate downstream, reaching 8.1 days at the dam site. During the rising period of the flood, the discharged flow is lowered to reduce the flood peak, and when the sediment peak reaches the dam, the discharged flow is increased to release high concentration sediment during the flood recession period so as to reduce sedimentation in the reservoir. The model results agreed well with the measured results. The 3D numerical model can be used for the real-time prediction of the arrival time of the flow discharge and sediment peaks for the joint regulation of water and sediment in the Three Gorges Reservoir.
Quantifying the Impact of Cascade Reservoirs on Streamflow, Drought, and Flood in the Jinsha River Basin

Abstract:The Jinsha River Basin (JRB) is the largest hydropower base in China, serving as the main source of the Western Route of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Under the influence of the reservoirs operation and climate change, the general hydrological regime in the JRB has been altered. Although the change process can be determined through a runoff time-series analysis and hydrological simulation, the individual impacts of the reservoirs have not been quantified. This study aimed to clarify the impact of the reservoirs in the JRB on the runoff, flood, and drought processes using a framework coupling long short-term memory (LSTM) and flood drought assessment techniques. The results are as follows: (1) From 1998 to 2020, reservoirs in the JRB changed the average daily runoff at Pingshan Station by −5.64%, +10.95%, and −10.93% at the annual and seasonal (dry and rainy) scales, respectively. (2) The operation of dams reduces the risk of flood disasters effectively. Compared with the natural river flow, the flood frequency decreased by 7.69%, and the total flow over the threshold was reduced by 37.86%. (3) The operation of dams has changed the duration and severity of drought, reducing extreme drought and increasing moderate and severe drought. In conclusion, the reservoirs in the JRB have positive effects on water resource regulation, and their mitigation of floods and extreme drought provides security for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This study provides a reference for the LSTM modeling of reservoir basins, quantifying the impact of reservoirs on runoff, flood, and drought in the JRB.
