Abstract:Phase-change sub-microcapsules (PCMCs) with a high encapsulation fraction have good prospects for the development of solar-to-thermal energy storage and utilization and functionalization of polymer resin via compositing PCMCs, and yet the preparation usually requires ultrasonic homogenization or high-speed stirring (≥1000 rpm). Here, PCMCs with up to 80 wt % cores were prepared by facile, versatile suspension polymerization. PCMCs have the morphology of spherical particles ranging from 326.48 to 920.65 nm in size, a readily tunable latent heat density (87.0–195.7 J/g), and a phase-change temperature in the range of 34.5–50.5 °C relying on the loading (50–80 wt %) and type (paraffin and docosane) of cores. PCMCs possess a latent heat efficiency close to 1, good thermal reliability, and stability. Further introducing a second shell of polyaniline resulted in excellent photothermal properties of PCMCs. Then, compositing PCMCs with a polyurethane (PU) matrix enables the formation of PU-PCMC composites with phase change, photothermal, and mechanical properties (tensile strength ∼5 MPa and elongation at break ∼500%). Specifically, the photothermal PU-PCMC composite can show an ∼50 °C higher surface temperature, reaching ∼80 °C for 2 min of light exposure, compared to its counterparts on introducing different types of PCMCs with and without photothermal effects.
