Abstract:The coupling of piezoelectric and semiconducting properties gives rise to the effect of piezotronics, which regulates charge carrier transport through the modulation of energy barriers at contact interfaces. With piezoelectric semiconductors as the building blocks, extensive progress has been made, covering the fundamental physics level, the individual device level as well as the integrated system level, effectively establishing a new field of study. By manipulating interfacial processes incorporating ionic charges, free electrons/holes, photons and chemicals, novel interdisciplinary effects have been studied and reported. This article aims at reviewing the milestone progress and offering perspectives of this new field of study in applications for multi-functional sensing systems, human-electronics interfacing, MEMS, energy harvesting and so on.

Abstract:Following increased environmental concerns on the toxicity of lead, the discovery of ultrahigh piezoelectricity in lead-free piezoelectric materials is critical for the substitution of commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics in numerous electronics. In this work, a synergistic design strategy is proposed to enhance the piezoelectricity in lead-free piezoelectric materials by flattening the Gibbs free energy density profile, via the coexistence of multiple phases and local structural heterogeneity This strategic materials design approach is based on first-principles calculations combined with Landau phenomenological theory and phase field simulations. Sustainable Stannum-doped BaTiO3 lead-free ferroelectric ceramics is prepared to validate our proposed mechanism, and a giant piezoelectric coefficient d33 > 1100 pC/N is achieved, being the highest value reported in lead-free piezoceramics. The mechanism and paradigm of the excellent piezoelectricity achieved here provides a feasible solution for replacing lead based piezoelectrics by lead-free counterparts.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials interconvert between electrical energy and mechanical strain and are widely used for electronic and electromechanical devices. Owing to growing environmental concerns, development of lead-free piezoelectric materials with enhanced properties becomes of great interest. Key to the academic problem is a lack of fundamental understanding on the actual mechanisms involved at the microscopic (unit cell) level. While it is well known that giant responses occur near structural phase boundaries, and it has long been proposed that polarization rotation and nanodomains are major determinants, so far, atomistic understanding of the origin of the response has come mostly from theoretical simulations. Recently, notable breakthroughs have been achieved in improving the properties of piezoceramics and thin films. Precise mapping of atomic displacements by atomically resolved Z-contrast imaging has demonstrated that gradual polarization rotation bridges the coexisting nanophases. These structural features, which take place on a length scale of just a few nanometers, now visible through aberration-corrected microscopy, provide a new pivotal understanding on the outstanding piezoelectric behavior that has been obtained in all systems. They also provide key guiding principles for the development of lead-free piezoelectrics, especially in the form of thin films, which remain far behind bulk ceramics at the time being. Coexistence of nanophases with flexible interconversion, introduced via phase boundary engineering, holds much promise for achieving high performance in other material systems with phase transitions.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials, which respond mechanically to applied electric field and vice versa, are essential for electromechanical transducers. Previous theoretical analyses have shown that high piezoelectricity in perovskite oxides is associated with a flat thermodynamic energy landscape connecting two or more ferroelectric phases. Here, guided by phenomenological theories and phase-field simulations, we propose an alternative design strategy to commonly used morphotropic phase boundaries to further flatten the energy landscape, by judiciously introducing local structural heterogeneity to manipulate interfacial energies (that is, extra interaction energies, such as electrostatic and elastic energies associated with the interfaces). To validate this, we synthesize rare-earth-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PMN–PT), as rare-earth dopants tend to change the local structure of Pb-based perovskite ferroelectrics. We achieve ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficients d33 of up to 1,500 pC N−1 and dielectric permittivity ε33/ε0 above 13,000 in a Sm-doped PMN–PT ceramic with a Curie temperature of 89 °C. Our research provides a new paradigm for designing material properties through engineering local structural heterogeneity, expected to benefit a wide range of functional materials.

Abstract:Polymer-ceramic piezoelectric composites, combining high piezoelectricity and mechanical flexibility, have attracted increasing interest in both academia and industry. However, their piezoelectric activity is largely limited by intrinsically low crystallinity and weak spontaneous polarization. Here, we propose a Ti3C2Tx MXene anchoring method to manipulate the intermolecular interactions within the all-trans conformation of a polymer matrix. Employing phase-field simulation and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that OH surface terminations on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets offer hydrogen bonding with the fluoropolymer matrix, leading to dipole alignment and enhanced net spontaneous polarization of the polymer-ceramic composites. We then translated this interfacial bonding strategy into electrospinning to boost the piezoelectric response of samarium doped Pb (Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3/polyvinylidene fluoride composite nanofibers by 160% via Ti3C2Tx nanosheets inclusion. With excellent piezoelectric and mechanical attributes, the as-electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers can be easily integrated into the conventional shoe insoles to form a foot sensor network for all-around gait patterns monitoring, walking habits identification and Metatarsalgi prognosis. This work utilizes the interfacial coupling mechanism of intermolecular anchoring as a strategy to develop high-performance piezoelectric composites for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Polarization configuration engineering by compositional and structural tuning in piezoelectrics holds great promise for high piezoelectricity that benefits wide electromechanical applications. Here, a novel flexible polarization configuration is achieved in high-entropy Pb-based perovskites, which contributes to superior piezoelectricity of d33 ∼1200 pC/N. Emergent characteristics and behaviors of such a flexible polarization configuration are thoroughly investigated by the combination of atomic-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy, in-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and first-principles calculations. The multiple interactions among the A and B-site atoms, originating from the increase of the species of B-site elements as well as the enhanced entropy of the system, weaken the long-range polarization order, enhance the flexibility of the polarization under the external field, and eventually result in the high piezoelectric performance. This work demonstrates that polarization configuration engineering through the high-entropy method would be an effective strategy for obtaining outstanding piezoelectric properties, which provides new opportunities for the design and discovery of high-performance piezoelectrics.

Abstract:Abstract Due to growing concern for the environment and human health, searching for high-performance lead-free piezoceramics has been a hot topic of scientific and industrial research. Despite the significant progress achieved toward enhancing piezoelectricity, further efforts should be devoted to the synergistic improvement of piezoelectricity and its thermal stability. This study provides new insight into these topics. A new KNN-based lead-free ceramic material is presented, which features a large piezoelectric coefficient (d33) exceeding 500 pC/N and a high Curie temperature (Tc) of ∼200°C. The superior piezoelectric response strongly relies on the increased composition-induced structural flexibility due to lattice softening and decreased unit cell distortion. In contrast to piezoelectricity anomalies induced via polymorphic transition, this piezoelectricity enhancement is effective within a broad temperature range rather than a specific small range. In particular, a hierarchical domain architecture composed of nano-sized domains along the submicron domains was detected in this material system, which further contributes to the high piezoelectricity.

Abstract:This study presents a novel method for fabricating intrinsic piezoelectric composites, aligning few‐layer nanosheets within a polymer matrix. Achieving a piezoelectric coefficient akin to PVDF, it offers significant cost‐efficiency, safety, and scalability advantages over conventional materials and has key applications include wearable sensors and ultrasound energy harvesting. This study showcases advancements in piezoelectric technology and nanoscale alignment processes. Few‐layer nanosheets (NSs) of hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) display notable piezoelectric properties. Yet, their integration into polymers typically yields non‐piezoelectric composites due to NSs' random distribution. We introduce a facile method for fabricating intrinsic piezoelectric composites incorporated with NSs without electric poling. Our innovative process aligns NSs within polyvinyl alcohol polymer, leveraging ice‐water interfacial tension, water crystallization thrust, and directional cross‐linking during freezing. The resulting PE composites exhibit a maximum piezoelectric coefficient of up to 25.5–28.4 pC N−1, comparable to polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), with significant cost‐efficiency, safety, and scalability advantages over conventional materials. Using this composite, we develop highly sensitive wearable pressure and strain sensors, and an ultrasound energy harvester. These sensors detect finger bending and differentiate between walking and running, while the harvester generates ~1.18 V/2.31 μA under 1 W cm−2 ultrasound input underwater. This universal method offers a novel manufacturing technique for piezoelectric composites, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness in synthesizing intrinsic piezoelectric composites based on 2D materials. Moreover, its potential extends to applications in wearable electronics and energy harvesting, promising significant advancements in these fields.

Abstract:Due to growing environmental concerns on the toxicity of lead-based piezoelectric materials, lead-free alternatives are urgently required but so far have not been able to reach competitive performance. Here we employ a novel phase-boundary engineering strategy utilizing the multiphase convergence, which induces a broad structural flexibility in a wide phase-boundary zone with contiguous polymorphic phase transitions. We achieve an ultrahigh piezoelectric constant ( d33) of 700 ± 30 pC/N in BaTiO3-based ceramics, maintaining >600 pC/N over a wide composition range. Atomic resolution polarization mapping by Z-contrast imaging reveals the coexistence of three ferroelectric phases (T + O + R) at the nanoscale with nanoscale polarization rotation between them. Theoretical simulations confirm greatly reduced energy barriers facilitating polarization rotation. Our lead-free material exceeds the performance of the majority of lead-based systems (including the benchmark PZT-5H) in the temperature range of 10-40 °C, making it suitable as a lead-free replacement in practical applications. This work offers a new paradigm for designing lead-free functional materials with superior electromechanical properties.

Abstract:Piezoelectric Composites In article number 2304096, Juan Xiong, Long Ren, and co‐workers provide a novel strategy of establishing liquid‐solid interfaces to significantly improve the output performance and reliability of polymer‐based piezoelectric materials. Such liquid‐solid interfaces are formed by filling Ga‐based liquid metal (LM) nanodroplets into the poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) (PVDF‐TrFE). It is revealed that the dielectric oxide layer of conductive LM nanodroplets regulate the piezoelectric output, and the soft character of LM nanofillers contribute to the structure stability during shape‐changing, which paves the way towards the high performance piezoelectric composite‐based devices.

Abstract:Piezoelectric microsystems are of use in areas such as mechanical sensing, energy conversion and robotics. The systems typically have a planar structure, but transforming them into complex three-dimensional (3D) frameworks could enhance and extend their various modes of operation. Here, we report a controlled, nonlinear buckling process to convert lithographically defined two-dimensional patterns of electrodes and thin films of piezoelectric polymers into sophisticated 3D piezoelectric microsystems. To illustrate the engineering versatility of the approach, we create more than twenty different 3D geometries. With these structures, we then demonstrate applications in energy harvesting with tailored mechanical properties and root-mean-square voltages ranging from 2 mV to 790 mV, in multifunctional sensors for robotic prosthetic interfaces with improved responsivity (for example, anisotropic responses and sensitivity of 60 mV N −1 for normal force), and in bio-integrated devices with in vivo operational capabilities. The 3D geometries, especially those with ultralow stiffnesses or asymmetric layouts, yield unique mechanical attributes and levels of functionality that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with conventional two-dimensional designs.

Abstract:Multifunctional capability, flexible design, rugged lightweight construction, and self-powered operation are desired attributes for electronics that directly interface with the human body or with advanced robotic systems. For these and related applications, piezoelectric materials, in forms that offer the ability to bend and stretch, are attractive for pressure/force sensors and mechanical energy harvesters. In this paper we introduce a large area, flexible piezoelectric material that consists of sheets of electrospun fibers of the polymer poly[(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene]. The flow and mechanical conditions associated with the spinning process yield free-standing, three-dimensional architectures of aligned arrangements of such fibers, in which the polymer chains adopt strongly preferential orientations. The resulting material offers exceptional piezoelectric characteristics, to enable, as an example, ultra-high sensitivity for measuring pressure, even at exceptionally small values (0.1 Pa). Quantitative analysis provides detailed insights into the pressure sensing mechanisms, and engineering design rules. Applications range from self-powered micro-mechanical elements, to self-balancing robots and sensitive impact detectors.

Abstract:Today’s electronic products are moving toward personal, portable, and flexible electronics with the integration of multifunctional sensors and self-powering technologies. Consequently, efficient and high-performance mechanical–electronic interfaces will be heavily considered in the development of future electronics. Piezotronic materials are active components for the conversion of mechanical stimuli to electrical signals and vice versa. In particular, low-dimensional (LD) materials offer greater efficiencies in piezoelectric materials than their bulk counterparts. Piezoelectric LD materials have attracted significant attention because of their successful integration in miniatured and flexible electronics. The origin of the piezoelectric responses of the LD materials is ascribed as a loss of centrosymmetry and inversion center. However, challenges exist in utilizing piezoelectric materials to their full potential, including effective charge separation upon external stimuli and imperfections in their crystal structures. Therefore, considerable efforts have been devoted to engineering the LD piezoelectric materials by rational structural design and chemical modification to further improve the piezoelectric performances. Herein, we comprehensively review the recent advances for engineering technologies of piezoelectric materials on the scale of zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), and two-dimensional (2D), which are mainly focused on creating defects, doping, and forming Janus structures and heterointerfaces with other materials. Meanwhile, the relationships between the morphological, physicochemical, and electronics of engineered LD piezoelectric materials and their piezoelectric performances are systematically discussed. Finally, we further present the prospect and challenge of the field and future research direction, aiming to inspire more research for achieving high-performance LD piezoelectric materials in sensors, actuators, and micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems.

Abstract:Piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymer based piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) have attracted extensive attention, which can hopefully be applied in the fields of wearable electric devices and sensing systems. However, one great challenge that limits their large-scale application is to achieve PVDF based composites with high piezoelectric performance. Herein, a facile and efficient method is proposed to develop translucent, porous composites with high beta phase content and abundant micropores. Enhanced beta phase formation is attributed to the electrostatic bonding between fillers (ZnO nanoparticles and Ag nanowires) and -CH2 and -CF2 chains, yet, local conformational disorder at the ZnO-matrix interface region caused by strong interface effect results in local stabilization of beta phase. Coupling of high beta phase content and microporous structure is believed to be essential for achieving considerable piezoelectric outputs (7.1 mu W/cm2) and excellent force sensitivity (1.155 V/kPa). In practical applications, the composites based PENGs can efficiently harvest mechanical energy from human motions and detect weak physiological signals. Furthermore, a 3 x 2 pixel tactile sensor array is integrated successfully to work as self-powered flexible coded lock without power supply. Our work offers a simple approach to high-performance piezoelectric composites and moves a step toward sensing application.
