Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.

Abstract:The design of the composition and adjustment of multicomponents to achieve a high chemical disorder are the important strategies for obtaining high piezoelectricity at a high depolarization temperature, which is conducive to a wide range of electromechanical applications. Here, the solid-state reaction method is used to prepare PZT-based piezoelectric ceramics; the replacement of A/B site ions by multielements flattens the ferroelectric free energy, which realized the high piezoelectric coefficient d(33) of similar to 1000 pC/N at a good Curie temperature T-C of 128 degrees C and the depolarization temperature TFE-FE of 105 degrees C. The microstructure of the ferroelectric phase and ferroelectric domain is systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The atomic-scale substitutions of the A/B site-disordered elements break the long-range polarization order with the accompanied Pb vacancies. The excess Ni2+ ions can regulate the grain growth, and the valence of Sb changed from Sb3+ to Sb-,(5+) which is able to induce Pb2+ vacancies. These synergistic effects of grain size and vacancy structure optimize the piezoelectric properties and temperature stability.
Superior Piezoelectric Performance with High Operating Temperature in Bismuth Ferrite-Based Ternary Ceramics

Abstract:Due to the thermal depolarization effect, adequate piezoelectric performance with high operating tem-perature is regarded to be challenging to accomplish concurrently in piezoceramics for applications in specific piezoelectric devices. In this work, we synthesized (0.8 -x)BiFeO3- xPbTiO3-0.2Ba(Zr0.25Ti0.75)O3 (abbreviated as BFO-xPT-BZT) ternary solid solutions with 0.15 & LE; x & LE; 0.30 by conventional solid-state reaction method. The MPB composition with a coexisting state of rhombohedral-tetragonal phases ex-hibits enhanced electromechanical properties, including Curie temperature of 380 & DEG;C, large-signal equiv-alent piezoelectric coefficient d*33 of 395 pm V -1 , small-signal piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 302 pC N -1 , and electromechanical coupling factor kp of 50.2%, which is comparable to commercial PZT-5A ceramics, indicating potential in high-temperature applications. Furthermore, in -situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and piezoelectric force microscopic (PFM) techniques demonstrate that multiphase coexistence and complex nanodomains promote piezoelectric response via synergism. The x = 0.24 composition exhibits the high -est in -situ d 33 of 577 pC N -1 and good temperature stability in 30 -280 & DEG;C, indicating that BZT-modified BFO-PT ceramics are promising candidates for high-temperature piezoelectric devices.& COPY; 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.

Abstract:Following increased environmental concerns on the toxicity of lead, the discovery of ultrahigh piezoelectricity in lead-free piezoelectric materials is critical for the substitution of commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics in numerous electronics. In this work, a synergistic design strategy is proposed to enhance the piezoelectricity in lead-free piezoelectric materials by flattening the Gibbs free energy density profile, via the coexistence of multiple phases and local structural heterogeneity This strategic materials design approach is based on first-principles calculations combined with Landau phenomenological theory and phase field simulations. Sustainable Stannum-doped BaTiO3 lead-free ferroelectric ceramics is prepared to validate our proposed mechanism, and a giant piezoelectric coefficient d33 > 1100 pC/N is achieved, being the highest value reported in lead-free piezoceramics. The mechanism and paradigm of the excellent piezoelectricity achieved here provides a feasible solution for replacing lead based piezoelectrics by lead-free counterparts.

Abstract:Designing a new high-performance lead-free ceramic has become a cutting-edge research topic due to growing concerns about the toxic nature of lead-based materials. In this work, a convenient strategy of compositional design and domain engineering is applied to the lead-fee BiFeO3-BaTiO3 ceramics which provides a flexible polarization free-energy profile for domain switching. Here, simultaneously enhanced dynamic piezoelectric constant (d 33* ≈ 772 pm/V) and a good thermal-stability (Δd 33* ≈ 26% over the temperature of 20–180 °C) are achieved with a high Curie temperature (T C) of 432 °C. This high piezoelectric strain performance is collectively attributed to multiple effects such as thermal quenching, suppression of defect charges by donor doping, chemically induced local structure heterogeneity, and electric field-induced phase transition. Furthermore, the addition of BT content decreased octahedral tilting that reduce anisotropy for domain switching and increased in tetragonality (c T/a T) providing a wider polar length for B-site cation displacement, leading to high piezoelectric strain performance. Atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy and piezoelectric force microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction results strongly support the origin of high piezoelectricity. The high and temperature-stable piezoelectric strain response of this work is superior to those of other lead-free ceramics. The synergistic approach of composition design and the concept present here for the origin of high strain response provides a paradigm for the development of new materials for high-temperature piezoelectric actuator applications.

Abstract:Due to growing environmental concerns on the toxicity of lead-based piezoelectric materials, lead-free alternatives are urgently required but so far have not been able to reach competitive performance. Here we employ a novel phase-boundary engineering strategy utilizing the multiphase convergence, which induces a broad structural flexibility in a wide phase-boundary zone with contiguous polymorphic phase transitions. We achieve an ultrahigh piezoelectric constant ( d33) of 700 ± 30 pC/N in BaTiO3-based ceramics, maintaining >600 pC/N over a wide composition range. Atomic resolution polarization mapping by Z-contrast imaging reveals the coexistence of three ferroelectric phases (T + O + R) at the nanoscale with nanoscale polarization rotation between them. Theoretical simulations confirm greatly reduced energy barriers facilitating polarization rotation. Our lead-free material exceeds the performance of the majority of lead-based systems (including the benchmark PZT-5H) in the temperature range of 10-40 °C, making it suitable as a lead-free replacement in practical applications. This work offers a new paradigm for designing lead-free functional materials with superior electromechanical properties.
Enhanced Electric Field-Induced Strain Properties in Lead-Free BF-BT-Based Piezoceramics by Local Structure Inhomogeneity

Abstract:The piezoelectric strain coefficient d 33* always deteriorates rapidly with increasing temperature, which is one of the technical bottlenecks restricting practical applications of piezoelectric ceramics at high temperatures. Herein, we successfully prepared (1 – x)(0.7BFeO3-0.3Ba(Hf0.05Ti0.95)O3)-x(Bi0.2Sr0.7)TiO3 by the conventional solid-state method, which possessed a high piezoelectric strain coefficient of d 33* = 490 pm/V at 245 °C. In particular, d 33* is insensitive to the temperature range of 25 to 245 °C. Microstructure characterization and electrical performance measurements showed that the optimal piezoelectric strain coefficient and its excellent thermal stability are mainly attributed to combining freezing temperature T f with polar nanoregions (PNRs). Piezoelectric force microscopy showed the relaxor behavior, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of the Moiré fringe revealed the existence of PNRs. The conception and findings in this work will further push the practical application of BiFeO3-BaTiO3-based high-temperature piezoceramics.

Enhancing piezoelectric coefficient and thermal stability in lead-free piezoceramics: insights at the atomic-scale

Abstract:Given the highly temperature-sensitive nature of the polymorphic phase boundaries, attaining excellent piezoelectric coefficient with superior temperature stability in lead-free piezoceramics via direct compositional design remains a formidable challenge. We demonstrate the synergistic improvement of piezoelectric coefficient and thermal stability in lead-free piezoceramics via atomic-scale local ferroelectric structure design. Via modulation of the local Landau energy barrier at doping sites, we effectively mitigate fluctuations in piezoelectric d33. Our approach achieves an impressive d33 of ~430 pC/N with a minimal temperature fluctuation range (△d33 ~ 7%) across the room temperature to 100 °C in potassium sodium niobate ceramics. Further optimization through annealing extends this temperature up to 150 °C (△d33 ~ 8%) while maintaining a high d33 of ~380 pC/N, rivaling the performance of classic temperature stable lead zirconate titanate. This work establishes a framework for addressing the dilemma between high piezoelectric coefficient and inadequate temperature stability in lead-free piezoceramics.

Abstract:BiFeO3–BaTiO3 is a promising lead-free piezoelectric ceramic, exhibiting high Curie temperature and superior electrochemical characteristics. In this work, [Formula: see text]BiFeO3–xBaTiO3 (BF–xBT, [Formula: see text], 0.28, 0.30, 0.32, 0.34, 0.36) ceramics were fabricated using the conventional solid-state reaction method through precise composition control. Multiple characterization techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electrical property testing systems, were applied to systematically examine the crystallographic structure, microstructure, as well as the dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the BF–xBT ceramics. The XRD results confirm that all compositions exhibit a typical perovskite structure, transitioning from a single rhombohedral phase to a rhombohedral–cubic phase mixture as the BT content increases. SEM shows apparent core–shell microstructures in the ceramics. Notably, the results demonstrated that the BF–0.30BT ceramic exhibits the maximum piezoelectric constant ([Formula: see text]) [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]pC/N, while the BF–0.34BT ceramic displays the maximum converse piezoelectric constant [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]pm/V, which highlights the suitability of BF–BT ceramics for high-performance piezoelectric applications.

Abstract:BiFeO3-BaTiO3 (BF-BT)-based lead-free ceramics are promising piezoelectric materials exhibiting high Curie temperatures and excellent electrochemical properties. In this study, 0.70Bi1+x FeO3-0.30BaTiO3 (B1+x F-BT, x = -0.01, 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were successfully fabricated via the conventional solid-phase reaction process. Crystallographic structure, microstructure, dielectric, impedance, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties among different compositions were comprehensively investigated. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that all compositions exhibited a typical perovskite structure with a cubic-rhombohedral phase mixture. The grain size of ceramics tends to increase as the Bi2O3 content rises. In particular, the backscattered electron images and energy dispersive analysis revealed prominent core-shell microstructure within grains. Notably, the BF-BT ceramic containing 1% excess Bi displayed the maximum d 33 ~217 pC/N and ~243 pm/V accompanied by a high Curie temperature of 515 °C. The findings demonstrate the potential feasibility of BF-BT ceramics in the field of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.
Enhanced high-temperature piezoelectric properties of Bi(Zn0.5Ti0.5)O3-modified BiFeO3–BaTiO3 ceramics

Abstract:This paper reports enhanced high-temperature piezoelectric properties of Bi(Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 -modified BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 (BF–BT- x BZT) ceramics prepared by two-step sintering method. The resultant ceramics show a symmetrical transition from a rhombohedral–pseudo-cubic ( R-PC ) phase coexistence to main PC phase with the increase of x , whose R-PC fraction (C R /C PC ) is 53.3/46.7, 52.9/47.1, 50.2/49.8, 27.4/72.6, 15.3/84.7 when x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, respectively. The modification of BZT inhibits the grain growth, reduces the leakage current and gradually drives ferroelectric to relaxor transition. Optimal piezoelectric properties: d 33 = 193 pC N −1 , P r = 20.6 μC cm −2 , T C = 503 °C and k p = 36% achieved at x = 0.01 composition, which is due to the synergistic effect of an appropriate C R /C PC ratio, improved insulation and good polarization performance. In addition, the depolarization temperature T d is close 280–312 °C, and the high-temperature d 33 further increases to 286–347 pC N −1 , which shows a good application prospect of lead-free piezoceramics at high temperature. Our work also confirms that the addition of (Zn 0.5 Ti 0.5 ) 3+ and two-step sintering method are an effective and convenient strategy to improve the high-temperature electrical performance of BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 based lead-free ceramics.

Abstract:An easy-to-use domain strategy by utilizing phase boundary design, chemical modification, and electric-field driving was employed to optimize strain and temperature stability of a polycrystalline ceramic. First, the effects of phase boundary, composition, and electric field on the domain were investigated in detail. Distinct spontaneous polarization rotation appears in various phase transition processes, inducing different evolution of domain structure and piezoresponse at elevated temperatures. Measurements reveal that the domain at the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary shows giant piezoresponse and high temperature stability. The structure origin is assigned to the slow degradation of spontaneous polarization, and the highly steady domain contribution stimulates excellent strain stability at the R-T phase boundary. Additionally, doped components significantly influenced domain stability, and boosted electric fields stabilized the piezoresponse of the domain. Second, modulating domain stability and its piezoresponse through tuning the phase boundary and driving field, as well as chemical modification, realized a large and temperature-insensitive strain fluctuation less than 3% at 23-80 degrees C) in (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This value is largely superior to that obtained from current lead-free piezoelectric materials and some soft lead-based counterparts, indicating a tremendous application potential for (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics. This study affords a significant guidance for designing lead-free piezoelectric materials with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability.

Abstract:Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics have been widely used because of their large piezoelectric response and good temperature-stability in the vicinity of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). However, the understanding on the mechanism of temperature-stable piezoelectricity in PZT is still blur and thus needs to explore properly since the urgently-needed Pb-free systems designed by the same MPB method commonly show poor temperature stability. In this paper, we investigate the property-microstructure relationship for the thermal-stable piezoelectricity through comparative studies of the phase diagram, in-situ piezoelectricity and microstructure evolution in both Pb-based and Pb-free systems. Our results show that the piezoelectric thermal-stability is closely related to the verticality of MPB and the doping elements. Tilted MPB shows worse thermal-stability as compared with that of the vertical MPB. While acceptor doped commercial PZTs show better thermal-stability when compared with that of the donor doped PZT. Moreover, our in-situ TEM reveals that it is the thermal-stable fine microstructure (i.e., no degeneration) that corresponds to the thermal-stable high-performance piezoelectricity. Our work provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the phase diagram, microstructure and thermal-stable piezoelectricity, which shall benefit the designing of new lead-free temperature-stable piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:In this letter, we use transmission electron microscopy to study the microstructure feature of recently reported Pb-free piezoceramic Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 across its piezoelectricity-optimal morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) by varying composition and temperature, respectively. The domain structure evolutions during such processes show that in MPB regime, the domains become miniaturized down to nanometer size with a domain hierarchy, which coincides with the d33-maximum region. Further convergent beam electron diffraction measurement shows that rhombohedral and tetragonal crystal symmetries coexist among the miniaturized domains. Strong piezoelectricity reported in such a system is due to easy polarization rotation between the coexisting nano-scale tetragonal and rhombohedral domains.

Abstract:Due to issues with Pb toxicity, there is an urgent need for high performance Pb-free alternatives to Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics. Although pure BaTiO3 material exhibits fairly low piezoelectric coefficients, further designing of such a material system greatly enhances the piezoelectric response by means of domain engineering, defects engineering, as well as phase boundary engineering. Especially after the discovery of a Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3–x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 system with extraordinarily high piezoelectric properties (d33 > 600 pC/N), BaTiO3-based piezoelectric ceramics are considered as one of the promising Pb-free substitutes. In the present contribution, we summarize the idea of designing high property BaTiO3 piezoceramic through domain engineering, defect-doping, as well as morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). In spite of its drawback of low Curie temperature, BaTiO3-based piezoelectric materials can be considered as an excellent model system for exploring the physics of highly piezoelectric materials. The relevant material design strategy in BaTiO3-based materials can provide guidelines for the next generation of Pb-free materials with even better piezoelectric properties that can be anticipated in the near future.
High-stability Quinary Lead-Based Piezoelectric Ceramics with High Piezoelectric Properties

Abstract:Piezoceramics with the formula Pb0.93Sr0.06Ba0.01(Mg1/3Nb2/3)(0.035)(Ni1/3Nb2/3)(0.2) (Sb1/2Nb1/2)(0.015)(ZrxTi1-x)(0.75)O-3 + 0.5 wt. % Li2CO3, where x = 0.51, 0.50, 0.49, 0.48, 0.47, and 0.46, have been made using the one-step solid-state method. The phase structure and electrical properties were systematically investigated in the quinary system. Here, the crystalline structure transformed gradually from the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase with decreasing Zr content. More importantly, the effective piezoelectric coefficient d(33)* of the ceramics demonstrates an excellent thermal stability below the Curie temperature. Meanwhile, piezoelectric ceramics with x = 0.49 exhibited the extraordinary electrical properties near the morphotropic phase boundary. A huge piezoelectric coefficient d(33 )= 853 pC/N, high Curie temperature T-C = 152 degrees C, and the electromechanical coupling coefficients k(p )= 67.4%, k(t )= 63.5%, and k(33 )= 67.4% were obtained at the composition of x = 0.49, which may lead a promising future for the transducer applications.
Evolution of Mesoscopic Domain Structure and Macroscopic Properties in Lead-Free Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-BaTiO3 Ferroelectric Ceramics

Abstract:Bismuth sodium titanate and related compounds are promising lead-free ferroelectric materials potentially useful in a wide range of piezoelectric applications. The domain structure plays an important role in determining the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties and thereby the performance of electromechanical transducers. In this work, piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is used to gain insights into the mesoscopic-scale domain structure and its evolution under electric field in the (1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (BNT-BT) piezoceramics with compositions varying from x = 0 to x = 0.08. A phase transition from the rhombohedral phase to the tetragonal phase is observed with increasing BT contents. A relationship is established between the relaxor behavior and the domain structures imaged by PFM, i.e., short-range polar regions without visible domains in relaxor ceramics of pure BNT, while long-range ordered polar states with clear domains in ferroelectric ceramics with the addition of BT content. Distinct micro-domains are observed in the ceramics with compositions close to the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), but the domain size drops to nanometers in the MPB composition with an increasing domain wall density. An electric field can induce the transformation from the relaxor behavior to a ferroelectric state, accompanied by an increase in domain sizes and a rearrangement/reorientation of the polar domains. This study of domain structure and its evolution in BNT-BT provides a better understanding of the relationship between the crystal structure, mesoscopic-scale domains, and macroscopic properties in these important lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Abstract:Since industry‐standard piezoelectric materials, such as lead zirconium titanate ceramics, contain toxic lead, a rapid surge in research on lead‐free piezoelectric materials is occurring due to concerns over environmental safety and human health. A ternary lead‐free (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3‐BaTiO3‐(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 single crystal with a large field induced strain of ≈0.9% and a giant piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 840 pC N−1 at room temperature is reported. It is revealed that the electric‐field‐induced phase transition and phase boundary between energetically comparable polar states (i.e., R3c and P4mm) play an important role in achieving the ultrahigh piezoelectricity. Transmission electron microscopy and scan probe microscopy are employed to verify the weak‐polar ferroelectric R3c and P4bm structure in the ground state. These unprecedentedly high piezoelectric properties make lead‐free ternary single crystals a leading candidate for piezoelectric‐based device applications, especially toward the era of smart homes and implantable medical devices.

Abstract:Both low strain hysteresis and high piezoelectric performance are required for practical applications in precisely controlled piezoelectric devices and systems. Unfortunately, enhanced piezoelectric properties were usually obtained with the presence of a large strain hysteresis in BaTiO3 (BT)-based piezoceramics. In this work, we propose to integrate crystallographic texturing and domain engineering strategies into BT-based ceramics to resolve this challenge. [001]c grain-oriented (Ba0.94Ca0.06)(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O3 (BCTZ) ceramics with a texture degree as high as 98.6% were synthesized by templated grain growth. A very high piezoelectric coefficient (d33) of 755 pC/N, and an extremely large piezoelectric strain coefficient (d33*=2027 pm/V) along with an ultra-low strain hysteresis (Hs) of 4.1% were simultaneously achieved in BT-based systems for the first time, which are among the best values ever reported on both lead-free and lead-based piezoceramics. The exceptionally high piezoelectric response is mainly from the reversible contribution, and can be ascribed to the piezoelectric anisotropy, the favorable domain configuration and the formation of smaller sized domains in the BCTZ textured ceramics. This study paves a new pathway to develop lead-free piezoelectrics with both low strain hysteresis and high piezoelectric coefficient. More importantly, it represents a very exciting discovery with potential application of BT-based ceramics in high-precision piezoelectric actuators.

Abstract:The high piezoelectricity of ABO3-type lead-free piezoelectric materials can be achieved with the help of either morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) or polymorphic phase transition (PPT). Here, we propose a new defect engineering route to the excellent piezoelectric properties, in which doped smaller acceptor and donor ions substituting bivalent A-sites are utilized to bring local lattice distortion and lower symmetry. A concrete paradigm is presented, (Li-Al) codoped BaTiO3 perovskite, that exhibits a largely thermo-stable piezoelectric constant (>300 pC/N) and huge mechanical quality factor (>2000). A systematic analysis including theoretical analysis and simulation results indicates that the Li(+) and Al(3+) ions are inclined to occupy the neighboring A-sites in the lattice and constitute a defect dipole (ionic pairs). The defect dipoles possess a kind of dipole moment which tends to align directionally after thermo-electric treatment. A mechanism related to the defect symmetry principle, phase transition, and defect migration is proposed to explain the outstanding piezoelectric properties. The present study opens a new development window for excellent piezoelectricity and provides a promising route to the potential utilization of lead-free piezoelectrics in high power applications.
