Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:Rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are considered to be one of the most sustainable alternative systems in a post-lithium-ion future owing to their lowest possible dependency on critical raw materials and high theoretical energy densities. However, their performance is still not up to par with their potential because of the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction. Here we report a single-atom catalyst design that transforms the sluggish four-electron oxygen reduction reaction into a fast two-electron pathway and enables a zinc peroxide (ZnO 2 ) chemistry in ZABs. With accessible FeN 2 S 2 active sites on mesoporous graphene, the catalyst serves to promote transport of electrolyte, oxygen and electron and confines the growth of ZnO 2 , which would otherwise form dead products. As a result, as-fabricated ZAB in a neutral electrolyte shows a voltage as high as 1.2 V at 0.2 mA cm −2 , a high round-trip efficiency of 61% and an excellent operation stability beyond ∼400 h. This work provides guidelines for the rational design of multifunctional cathodes and would accelerate the adoption of sustainable batteries in the metal–air category.

Abstract:When two is better than four Batteries based on the reaction of zinc and oxygen have been used for more than a century, but these have been primary (that is, nonrechargeable) cells. These batteries use an alkaline electrolyte and require a four-electron reduction of oxygen to water, which is a slow process. Sun et al. show that with the right choice of nonalkaline electrolyte, the battery can operate using a two-electron zinc-oxygen/zinc peroxide chemistry that is far more reversible. By making the electrolyte hydrophobic, water is excluded from the near surface of the cathode, thus preventing the four-electron reduction. Abstract:Air electrode acts as a gas-liquid phase change gateway of rechargeable zinc-air battery with dense energy, the charge/discharge induced the failure of which has a great impact on cycling performance of the battery. Tri-electrode configuration can answer the challenge of bi-functional catalysts at large current densities, but it would reduce energy density of the battery. Here we show that air electrode is connected to the charging electrode of nickel mesh in parallel, reducing the charging resistance without damaging air electrode. Rechargeable zinc-air battery with the parallelled circuit strategy exhibits stable performance and high energy advantages, and electron transport is accelerated by means of current collector of air electrode wrapping up the catalytic layer boundaries. A new zinc/nickel battery in between zinc electrode with the charging electrode is uncovered in the discharging process of rechargeable zinc-air battery, increasing load power supply.

Abstract:The commercialization of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is significantly impeded by their high charging voltage and low energy efficiency. In this work, we apply soluble KI to ZABs as a reaction modifier to change the oxidation pathway in the charging process from oxygen evolution reaction to I– oxidation reaction (IOR), which enjoys lower oxidation potential and faster kinetics. In addition, we surprisingly find that commercial cost-effective XC72R carbon delivers satisfactory bifunctional IOR and oxygen reduction reaction activity. Density functional theory calculation is provided to demonstrate the IOR mechanism by XC72R carbon. Finally, the KI-modified ZABs with XC72R exhibit a low charging voltage of 1.79 V, improved energy efficiency of 65.3% (2.0 V and 60% for conventional ZABs with noble-metal catalysts), and long cycle life of over 120 h at 5 mA cm–2. Further characterizations have illuminated the reason behind the extended battery cycle life as well. This work can significantly facilitate the future use of rechargeable ZABs in energy storage.

Abstract:Zinc-air battery technology is gaining recognition as a promising energy storage device to be used in portable electronics and electric vehicles. Despite possessing high theoretical energy density, environmental and operational safety, and easy accessibility of zinc reservoirs, the successful commercialization of zinc-air batteries suffers due to the poor oxygen electrocatalysis kinetics at the air cathode. The kinetically inept oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions at the cathode lead to a large overpotential barrier and poor charge-discharge cyclic performance of the rechargeable zinc-air battery. This work demonstrates designing a multi-principal metal bifunctional electrocatalyst that is directly deposited on conductive, porous, and flexible substrates to eliminate the necessity of polymeric binders. The flexible bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst used for the cathode of solid-state ZAB is assembled with gel polymer electrolyte and zinc anode giving excellent charge-discharge cyclic stability and constant discharge voltage (close to 1.65 V). These multi-principal metal electrocatalysts constituting quasi-equimolar concentration, provide numerous combinations of surface functionality, multiple adsorption sites, and electronic environments thus enabling better optimization of the catalytic performance.
High-performing Rechargeable/flexible Zinc-Air Batteries by Coordinated Hierarchical Bi-metallic Electrocatalyst and Heterostructure Anion Exchange Membrane

Abstract:Due to the lack of highly efficient and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/ OER) catalyst and alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM), advanced rechargeable zinc-air batteries are largely hindered in many applications from wearable electronics to electric vehicles. Herein, a hybrid of porous Co3O4 anchoring on MnO2, then interpenetrating with CNTs (Co3O4/MnO2-CNTs) is synthesized via facile hydrothermal process, and an AEM (CS/EMImC-Co-EP/GO) employing semi-interpenetrating network structure is fabricated with a simple solution-casting method. The porous nanoparticles and chrysalis-like hybrid as well as strong bi-metallic coupling effect build highways and buffer zones for reactant and electrons transfer for ORR/ OER. In addition, due to the competition of bottom Co atoms, the density functional theory (DFT) proves that the neighbor Mn sites (Mn1 and Mn2) of the MnO2(110) surface are evidently activated, which prompts the catalytic activity of hybrids by making the Mn1, Mn2 3d density of states move forward lower energy entirely. As a result, Co3O4/MnO2-CNTs exhibit superior ORR/OER activities with the low potential difference (Delta E) of 0.85 V and impressive performances in rechargeable aqueous zinc-air batteries (power density: 534 mW cm(-2)). Moreover, combining AEM integrated into rechargeable flexible all-solid-state zinc-air batteries and stack, the enhancement natures of wearable devices are achieved even under different bending angles benefiting from high hydroxyl anion conductivity and remarkable flexibility of AEM semi-interpenetrating network, which accelerates ion transport by the synergy of hopping and vehicle mechanisms. Furthermore, the flexible all-solid-state zinc-air batteries show excellent tolerance toxicity of CO2.

Abstract:Zinc-based aqueous batteries (ZABs) are attracting extensive attention due to the low cost, high capacity, and environmental benignity of the zinc anode. However, their application is still hindered by the undesired zinc dendrites. Despite Zn-surface modification being promising in relieving dendrites, a thick separator (i.e. glass fibre, 250-700 μm) is still required to resist dendrite puncture, which limits volumetric energy density of battery. Here, we pivot from the traditional interphase plus extra separator categories, proposing an all-in-one ligand buffer layer (ca. 20 μm) to effectively modulate the Zn2+ transfer and deposition behaviors proved by in-situ electrochemical digital holography. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory simulations further reveal that the catechol groups in the buffer layer can accelerate the Zn2+ reduction reaction (ZRR) through the electron-donating p-π conjugation effect, decreasing the negative charge in the coordination environment. Without extra separators, the elaborated system endows low polarization below 28.2 mV, long lifespan of 4950 h at 5 mA cm‒2 in symmetric batteries, and an unprecedented volumetric energy density of 99.2 Wh L‒1 based on the whole pouch cells. The concomitantly "separator-free" and "dendrite-free" conjugation effect with an accelerated ZRR process could foster the progression of metallic anodes and benefit energetic aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Electrically rechargeable zinc‐air batteries attract extensive research interests due to their potentially high energy density and low cost but suffer from chemical instability and poor electrochemical reversibility caused by the corrosive nature of the conventional alkaline electrolyte. Here we demonstrate a non‐alkaline zinc acetate electrolyte for electrically rechargeable zinc‐air batteries with long‐term operation stability (>600 hours) in ambient air without any special cell engineering. The unique battery chemistry with reversible formation/decomposition of zinc hydroxyacetate dihydrate is systematically revealed using diversified electrochemical and analytical techniques. Furthermore, the carbon‐based air cathode is modified towards a hydrophilic surface to increase the energy efficiency. This work provides new insight on effective electrolyte design to achieve long‐term operation zinc‐air batteries. A low‐cost zinc acetate electrolyte was introduced for electrically rechargeable Zn‐air battery for the first time, which could achieve a long‐term operation stability in ambient air without any special cell engineering. The battery reaction mechanism of reversible formation/decomposition of zinc hydroxyacetate dihydrate was revealed using well‐designed electrochemical and analytical techniques.

Abstract:The rechargeable zinc-air battery (ZAB) is a promising energy storage technology owing to its high energy density and safe aqueous electrolyte, but there is a significant performance bottleneck. Generally, cathode reactions only occur at multiphase interfaces, where the electrocatalytic active sites can participate in redox reactions effectively. In the conventional air cathode, the 2D multiphase interface on the surface of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) inevitably results in an insufficient amount of active sites and poor interfacial contact, leading to sluggish reaction kinetics. To address this problem, a 3D multiphase interface strategy is proposed to extend the reactive interface into the interior of the GDL. Based on this concept, an asymmetric air cathode is designed to increase the accessible active sites, accelerate mass transfer, and generate a dynamically stabilized reactive interface. With a NiFe layered-double-hydroxide electrocatalyst, ZABs based on the asymmetric cathode deliver a small charge/discharge voltage gap (0.81 V at 5.0 mA cm(-2)), a high power density, and a stable cyclability (over 2000 cycles). This 3D reactive interface strategy provides a feasible method for enhancing the air cathode kinetics and further enlightens electrode designs for energy devices involving multiphase electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:Rechargeable Zinc-air Batteries (ZABs) hold great promise for energy storage and conversion due to their high theoretical energy density, cost-effectiveness and inherent safety. However, progresses are constrained by the sluggish oxygen electrocatalysis and instability at the air cathode. To address such issues, we resorted to a directly integrated pseudo-3D composite electrocatalyst based on carbon cloth, on which Fe/Fe3C- and N- co-doped carbon nanotubes are directly induced, and then used to further intercalate NiFe hydroxide clusters, FexNC@NiFe(OH)x . This hierarchical electrocatalyst shows enhanced oxygen electrocatalysis (ΔE is 626 mV), rendering high efficiency and durability of ZABs. Such improvement can be attributed to the rationally integrated pseudo-3D structure of high conductivity, high density of active sites, interconnected porosity and well-bonded components for accelerating electron transfer and ion diffusion while ensuring structural integrity. Moreover, the hierarchical structure increases the electrochemical surface area with superior surface hydrophilicity. As a result, the composite electrocatalyst shows great potential as a binder-free air electrode, as demonstrated in a rechargeable Zn-air battery of a high power density of 85.1 mW cm-2 and a long period of operation beyond 2000 cycles (350 hours) without notable degradation, outperforming noble metal electrodes.

Abstract:Despite their intrinsic safety and cost-effectiveness, aqueous zinc (Zn)-organic batteries have been struggling with the rapid performance degradation arising from the poor reversibility of Zn anodes and the dissolution of cathodes. Here, we present a new aqueous eutectic electrolyte by coupling a hydrated Zn salt (Zn(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O) exclusively with a neutral ligand (succinonitrile) to mitigate these issues. The unique aqua Zn2+ solvates with a succinonitrile-assisted solvation shell enable an unusual Zn/Zn2+ reversibility of 98.4% Coulombic efficiency along with smooth Zn deposition. Moreover, all water molecules contribute to the formation of the eutectic network, resulting in a delayed oxidation and suppressed solvating ability. When a quinone-based polymermaterial (38 wt% sulfur content) is utilized as a cathode, the Zn-organic battery with this aqueous eutectic electrolyte exhibits an unprecedented cyclability with a low capacity decay rate (0.004% per cycle over 3,500 cycles) and superior low-temperature performance.

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries are a promising alternative to lithium ion batteries due to their large energy density, safety, and low production cost. However, the stability of the zinc-air battery is often low due to the formation of dendrite which causes short circuiting and the CO2 adsorption from the air which causes carbonate formation on the air electrode. In this work, we demonstrate a zinc-air battery design with acidic oxygen reduction reaction for the first time via the incorporation of a bipolar membrane. The bipolar membrane creates a locally acidic environment in the air cathode which could lead to a higher oxygen reduction reaction activity and a better 4-electron selectivity toward water instead of the 2-electron pathway toward peroxide. Locally acidic air cathode is also effective at improving the cell's durability by preventing carbonate formation. Gas chromatography confirms that CO2 adsorption is 7 times lower in the bipolar membrane compared to a conventional battery separator. A stable cycling of 300+ hours is achieved at 5 mA/cm2. Dendrite formation is also mitigated due to the mechanical strength of the membrane. The insights from this work could be leveraged to develop a better zinc-air battery design for long-term energy storage applications.

Abstract:A new approach for utilizing a Zn anode and an air cathode in a rechargeable alkaline zinc–air battery (ZAB) using a reversible two‐electron bifunctional catalyst is presented. The proposed approach results in a ZAB with high battery metrics in terms of reversibility, high round‐trip efficiency, longevity, and energy cost. Rechargeable alkaline zinc–air batteries (ZAB) hold great promise as a viable, sustainable, and safe alternative energy storage system to the lithium‐ion battery. However, the practical realization of ZABs is limited by their intrinsically low energy trip efficiency, stemming from a large charge and discharge potential gap. This overpotential is attributed to the four‐electron oxygen evolution and reduction reactions and their sluggish kinetics. Here, a new concept based on two‐electron generation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide at the air electrode is introduced. The O2/peroxide chemistry, facilitated by a newly developed Ni‐based bifunctional electrocatalyst, enables fast peroxide generation/consumption, exceptional energy efficiency, high durability, and high capacity. Hence, this new design offers substantial progress toward the commercialization of high energy density metal–air batteries.
