Abstract:The problem of controllability and control strategy for a class of Networked Control Systems (NCSs) with packets loss are studied in this paper. A probabilistic controllability conception is proposed for these systems. In order to analyze the probabilistic controllability and relevant properties, a representation of the initial state by a group of constructive base of linear space is introduced. Based on this representation the affects to control system caused by packets loss can be expressed by system substates. A control strategy is developed to guarantee, the controllability of NCSs, and the minimum control steps property of this control strategy is discussed as well. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition of probabilistic controllability for NCSs with packets loss is represented. © 2013 TCCT, CAA.

Abstract:This paper investigates the H∞ control problem for a class of wireless networked control system (NCS). Both time delays and packet losses are considered simultaneously in the wireless communication networks. Under some assumptions, a switched system model with time-varying delays is established to describe the closed-loop system, by which the effect of packet losses is dealt differently from time delays. Based on the obtained model, a sufficient condition is proposed to guarantee the closed-loop system stable and ensure a prescribed H∞ performance level. Examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A new stochastic switched linear model is established to describe the Zigbee-based wireless networked control system (WNCS) with both network-induced delay and packet dropout. The network-induced delay can be less or longer than one sampling period. A sufficient condition is presented for the exponentially mean square stability of the closed-loop WNCS, and corresponding state feedback controller is designed by using the augmenting technique and multi-Lyapunov approach. Then, combined with carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) algorithm, a method is given to choose proper parameter values. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Optimal control design with random packet losses is presented in this paper. In a large multihop sensor network, the controllers and the plants usually communicate via unreliable wireless channels, and the algebraic Riccati equation becomes stochastic because of the random packet losses. We show that the optimal control policy does not exist when the packet dropping rate is greater than a critical value. Abstract:This paper proposes a new dynamic control strategy with variable sampling period for Wireless Networked Control Systems with multiple control loops operating in 802.11. The new method dynamically adjusts the frequency of every sensor of each control loop according to the integrated functions which comprise the status of delay and the error of state variety. The sampling periods are controlled based on the real-time available bandwidth and the overall control performance is improved significantly. The stability analysis is provided by considering the characteristic of adaptive packet dropout method, and then control gain is obtained. Simulation results verify the effectiveness and advantage of our approach.

Abstract:We investigate the optimal control problem for networked control systems consisting of a linear plant controlled by a remote controller and a local controller. By virtue of the maximum principle, we establish a non-homogeneous relationship between the state and the costate of this class of systems. Based on this relationship, the optimal controllers are derived in terms of the two Riccati equations.

Abstract:This paper studies the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control problem for wireless networked control systems in which control inputs are randomly dropped without the packet acknowledgment. The packet acknowledgment is based on a signal scheme between the actuator and the estimator, which make the estimator know whether control packets are dropped or not. For such systems, the calculation of the optimal LQG controller has been shown to be computationally prohibitive and impractical, and sub-optimal solutions are usually obtained under an optimality criteria which is different from that for the optimal LQG problem. An approximate optimal LQG controller is obtained by introducing two approximations in computing the optimal estimation and control. Illustrative examples are provided to verify effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, the design of the optimal decentralized state-feedback controllers is considered for a wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) with stochastic network-induced delays and packet losses. In particular, taking advantage of multiple controllers, we model the WSAN as a wireless networked control system (NCS) with decentralized controllers, and then formulate the stochastic optimal state-feedback control problem as a non-cooperative linear quadratic (LQ) game. The optimal control law of each controller is obtained that is a function of the current plant state and all past control signals. The performance of the proposed stochastic optimal control algorithm is investigated using both a genetic control system and a load frequency control (LFC) system in power grid.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problems of optimal estimation and control, i.e., the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control, for systems with packet losses but without acknowledgment. Such acknowledgment is a signal sent by the actuator to inform the estimator of the incidence of control packet losses. For such system, which is usually called as a user datagram protocol (UDP)-like system, the optimal estimation is nonlinear and its calculation is time-consuming, making its corresponding optimal LQG problem complicated. We first propose two conditions: 1) the sensor has some computation abilities; and 2) the control command, exerted to the plant, is known to the sensor. For a UDP-like system satisfying these two conditions, we derive the optimal estimation. By constructing the finite and infinite product probability measure spaces for the estimation error covariances (EEC), we give the stability condition for the expected EEC, and show the existence of a measurable function to which the EEC converges in distribution, and propose some practical methods to evaluate the estimation performance. Finally, the LQG controllers are derived, and the conditions for the mean square stability of the closed-loop system are established.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the optimal output‐feedback control and stabilization of a networked control system, where both time delay and packet loss are involved. Different from most previous work, the packet loss is Markovian, and the time delay occurs between the actuator and controller. The difficulty is rooted in the failure of the separation principle. The main tools are solving the delayed forward‐backward stochastic difference equations (D‐FBSDEs) and convergent analysis. Resorting to solving D‐FBSDEs and completing the square, we acquire the analytical solution, including the necessary and sufficient solvability condition and the explicit controller, of the finite‐horizon optimal control problem. Based on the finite‐horizon result and convergent analysis, we then obtain the analytical solution of the infinite‐horizon optimal control and stabilization problems. In addition, by analyzing the convergence of the optimal estimator, we establish a constraint relationship between the packet loss probability q and the system matrix A . The results are evaluated by numerical examples.

Abstract:The control system wherein a network is used as a communication channel among components is called networked control system. This paper proposed CEDP (Compensation and Estimation for Delay and Packet dropout) methods to overcome the problem of transmission delay and packet dropout. The compensator was used to overcome the influence of network transmission delay; while in case of data packet loss, the estimator was used to estimate the plant state. The system obtained is modeled as an asynchronous dynamical system with rate constraint on two events. Then for the system exponential stability, the paper derived a time varying bilinear matrix inequalities (BMI) and proposed a method to solve the time varying BMI problem to obtain the maximum value of the NCS decay rate.

Abstract:As the control system scale develops, the application of the control network has increased. Due to the bandwidth constraint and the unreliable transmission of network, the time-delay and data-packet dropout exist inevitably in the networked control system. A novel compensation scheme is presented for the data-packet dropout. An open-loop estimator and a closed-loop estimator are designed according to whether the data-packet dropped. The result of the simulation shows the validity of the proposed design method.

Abstract:Modeling, stability analysis and controller design of networked control systems with time-delay and stochastic packet-dropout process are considered. The network-induced time-delay is shorter than one sampling period, and it can be constant or time-varying. The stochastic packet-dropout process is an arbitrary process in the general sense and its numerical characteristic needn't be gained in advance. Sufficient conditions of the stability and methods of state feedback controller design for close-loop networked control systems are presented. Simulation shows the validity of proposed method.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate control-aware energy-efficient transmission strategies for wireless control systems with short packets (WCSs), in which remote state estimation error, system stability, transmission energy consumption, and communication packets with finite-length coding are all taken into account. Specifically, we formulate the transmission strategy design problem as a multiobjective optimization problem, which minimizes the remote state estimation error and transmission energy consumption simultaneously under the constraints of system stability and short packet communications. To solve the multiobjective optimization problem, we first introduce a novel objective function that encapsulates two different objective functions into a single one by using weight parameters, and further prove that the solution of the new stochastic optimization problem is a nondominated solution of the original one. Moreover, to solve the new stochastic optimization, we propose a dynamic control-aware energy-efficient transmission (DCET) algorithm that pushes the objective cost close to the optimal with a tradeoff in virtual queue backlogs for constraints. In particular, to tackle the nonconvexity constraint due to short packet communications, we introduce an additional constraint, with which the optimization problem is convex. Finally, simulation results verified the superiority of our proposed transmission strategy as compared with schemes of TDMA and Aloha-RAM multi access.

Abstract:Wireless networked control systems (WNCSs) have the potential to revolutionize industrial automation in smart factories. Optimizing closed-loop performance while maintaining stability is a fundamental challenge in WNCS due to limited bandwidth and nondeterministic link quality of wireless networks. In order to bridge the gap between network design and control system performance, we propose an optimal dynamic transmission scheduling strategy that optimizes the performance of multiloop control systems by allocating network resources based on predictions of both link quality and control performance at run time. We formulate the optimal dynamic scheduling problem as a nonlinear integer programming problem, which is relaxed to a linear programming problem. We further extend the optimization problem to balance control performance and communication cost. The proposed optimal dynamic scheduling strategy renders the closed-loop system mean-square stable under mild assumptions. Its efficacy is demonstrated by simulating a four-loop control system over an IEEE 802.15.4 wireless network simulator—TOSSIM. The run-time network reconfiguration protocol tailored for optimal scheduling is designed and implemented on a real wireless network consisting of IEEE 802.15.4 devices. Hybrid simulations integrating a real wireless network and simulated physical plant control are performed. Simulation and experimental results show that the optimal dynamic scheduling can enhance control system performance and adapt to both constant and variable wireless interference and physical disturbance to the plant.

Abstract:This study investigates the problem of fuzzy predictive control of non-linear systems with imperfect communication links. Packet loss (which appears typically in a network environment) is assumed to happen intermittently between the physical plant and the controller, and stochastic variables satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution are utilised to describe the imperfect communication phenomenon. The formulation is mathematically transformed into a stochastic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. Attention is focused on the design of fuzzy predictive controllers such that the closed-loop system is stochastically stable, optimising an objective function value at every step in an infinite time horizon subject to input constraints and packet dropouts. A piecewise Lyapunov function approach is utilised, which is effective for fuzzy systems with trapezoidal membership functions; for continuous membership functions, the quadratic Lyapunov function approach is employed. A set of linear matrix inequalities is given to solve the corresponding controller optimisation problem. Two examples are provided to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of the developed theoretical results. © 2010 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract:Wireless Software Defined Network (WSDN) presents a new network architecture where the control plane of forwarding devices is shifted to a centralized controller. It is critical to maximize network throughput and keep the network stable during congestion control. However, stability control is insufficient to achieve these aims in the presence of delay and interference. In this paper, we adopt robust control to tackle these problems. Firstly, an efficient weighted scheduling scheme is proposed to maximize the network throughput. Secondly, a robust control model is presented, which is analyzed by Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. The sufficient conditions are formulated by Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical simulation is conducted to indicate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
