Abstract:This study focuses on the output feedback guaranteed cost control issue for networked control systems with random packet dropouts and time delays. The plant considered in this study is characterized by an uncertain linear discrete-time system, wherein random packet dropouts and time delays exist in forward controller-to-actuator and feedback sensor-to-controller communication links that are modeled as unified multiple Markov chains. The resulting closed-loop system is modeled as a Markovian jump linear system. The guaranteed cost control issue is solved via Lyapunov stability theory and the linear matrix inequality approach. The design of the mode-independent robust output feedback controller is derived under the Markov jump unified framework. The closed-loop system is not only stochastically stable but it also guarantees an adequate level of performance. A simulation example illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. Note to Practitioners—With the increasing requirement in modern industries such as in vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, and remote surgery, and with the increasing complexity and difficulty for establishing an exact mathematical model of an actual physical system to achieve the desired performance, it is important to regulate the system outputs to satisfy a desired objective. This paper addresses the problem of guaranteed cost control with packet dropouts, time delays, and uncertain parameters, in which the packet dropouts and time delays are random and time-varying. Such phenomena are common in networked control systems. By means of the Lyapunov stability method and the robust control theory, the output of the closed-loop system can be guaranteed an adequate level of performance. Future research topics include using mode-dependent techniques to reduce the conservativeness and considering more practical phenomena such as the limited bandwidths to reflect more realistic factors.
