Abstract:Magnetic topological insulators and semi-metals have a variety of properties that make them attractive for applications including spintronics and quantum computation, but very few high-quality candidate materials are known. In this work, we use systematic high-throughput density functional theory calculations to identify magnetic topological materials from 40000 three-dimensional materials in the JARVIS-DFT database (<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://jarvis.nist.gov/jarvisdft" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>). First, we screen materials with net magnetic moment > 0.5 {\mu}B and spin-orbit spillage > 0.25, resulting in 25 insulating and 564 metallic candidates. The spillage acts as a signature of spin-orbit induced band-inversion. Then, we carry out calculations of Wannier charge centers, Chern numbers, anomalous Hall conductivities, surface bandstructures, and Fermi-surfaces to determine interesting topological characteristics of the screened compounds. We also train machine learning models for predicting the spillage, bandgaps, and magnetic moments of new compounds, to further accelerate the screening process. We experimentally synthesize and characterize a few candidate materials to support our theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The discoveries of intrinsically magnetic topological materials, including semimetals with a large anomalous Hall effect and axion insulators, have directed fundamental research in solid-state materials. Topological quantum chemistry has enabled the understanding of and the search for paramagnetic topological materials. Using magnetic topological indices obtained from magnetic topological quantum chemistry (MTQC), here we perform a high-throughput search for magnetic topological materials based on first-principles calculations. We use as our starting point the Magnetic Materials Database on the Bilbao Crystallographic Server, which contains more than 549 magnetic compounds with magnetic structures deduced from neutron-scattering experiments, and identify 130 enforced semimetals (for which the band crossings are implied by symmetry eigenvalues), and topological insulators. For each compound, we perform complete electronic structure calculations, which include complete topological phase diagrams using different values of the Hubbard potential. Using a custom code to find the magnetic co-representations of all bands in all magnetic space groups, we generate data to be fed into the algorithm of MTQC to determine the topology of each magnetic material. Several of these materials display previously unknown topological phases, including symmetry-indicated magnetic semimetals, three-dimensional anomalous Hall insulators and higher-order magnetic semimetals. We analyse topological trends in the materials under varying interactions: 60 per cent of the 130 topological materials have topologies sensitive to interactions, and the others have stable topologies under varying interactions. We provide a materials database for future experimental studies and open-source code for diagnosing topologies of magnetic materials.

High-throughput search for topological magnon materials

Abstract:Topological magnons give rise to possibilities for engineering novel spintronics devices with critical applications in quantum information and computation, due to its symmetry-protected robustness and low dissipation. However, to make reliable and systematic predictions about material realization of topological magnons has been a major challenge, due to the lack of neutron scattering data for most materials. In this work, we significantly advance the symmetry-based approach for identifying topological magnons through developing a fully automated algorithm, utilizing the theory of symmetry indicators, that enables a highly efficient and large-scale search for candidate materials hosting field-induced topological magnons. This progress not only streamlines the discovery process but also expands the scope of materials exploration beyond previous manual or traditional methods, offering a powerful tool for uncovering novel topological phases in magnetic systems. Performing a large-scale search over all 1649 magnetic materials in Bilbao Crystallographic Server with a commensurate magnetic order, we discover 387 candidate materials for topological magnons, significantly expanding the pool of topological magnon materials. We further discuss examples and experimental accessibility of the candidate materials, shedding light on future experimental realizations of topological magnons in magnetic materials.

New magnetic topological materials from high-throughput search

Abstract:We conducted a high-throughput search for topological magnetic materials on 522 new, experimentally reported commensurate magnetic structures from MAGNDATA, doubling the number of available materials on the Topological Magnetic Materials database. This brings up to date the previous studies which had become incomplete due to the discovery of new materials. For each material, we performed first-principle electronic calculations and diagnosed the topology as a function of the Hubbard U parameter. Our high-throughput calculation led us to the prediction of 250 experimentally relevant topologically non-trivial materials, which represent 47.89% of the newly analyzed materials. We present five remarkable examples of these materials, each showcasing a different topological phase: Mn${}_2$AlB${}_2$ (BCSID 1.508), which exhibits a nodal line semimetal to topological insulator transition as a function of SOC, CaMnSi (BCSID 0.599), a narrow gap axion insulator, UAsS (BCSID 0.594) a 5f-orbital Weyl semimetal, CsMnF${}_4$ (BCSID 0.327), a material presenting a new type of quasi-symmetry protected closed nodal surface and FeCr${}_2$S${}_4$ (BCSID 0.613), a symmetry-enforced semimetal with double Weyls and spin-polarised surface states.

Abstract:The success of topological band theory and symmetry-based topological classification significantly advances our understanding of the Berry phase. Based on the critical concept of topological obstruction, efficient theoretical frameworks, including topological quantum chemistry and symmetry indicator theory, were developed, making a massive characterization of real materials possible. However, the classification of magnetic materials often involves the complexity of their unknown magnetic structures, which are often hard to know from experiments, thus, hindering the topological classification. In this paper, we design a high-throughput workflow to classify magnetic topological materials by automating the search for collinear magnetic structures and the characterization of their topological natures. We computed 1049 chosen transition-metal compounds (TMCs) without oxygen and identified 64 topological insulators and 53 semimetals, which become 73 and 26 when U correction is further considered. Due to the lack of magnetic structure information from experiments, our high-throughput predictions provide insightful reference results and make the step toward a complete diagnosis of magnetic topological materials.
High throughput computational screening for 2D ferromagnetic materials: the critical role of anisotropy and local correlations

Abstract:The recent observation of ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional (2D) materials has initiated a booming interest in the subject of 2D magnetism. In contrast to bulk materials, 2D materials can only exhibit magnetic order in the presence of magnetic anisotropy. In the present work we have used the Computational 2D Materials Database (C2DB) to search for new ferromagnetic 2D materials using the spinwave gap as a simple descriptor that accounts for the role of magnetic anisotropy. In addition to known compounds we find 12 novel insulating materials that exhibit magnetic order at finite temperatures. For these we evaluate the critical temperatures from classical Monte Carlo simulations of a Heisenberg model with exchange and anisotropy parameters obtained from first principles. Starting from 150 stable ferromagnetic 2D materials we find five candidates that are predicted to have critical temperatures exceeding that of CrI3. We also study the effect of Hubbard corrections in the framework of DFT+U and find that the value of U can have a crucial influence on the prediction of magnetic properties. Our work provides new insight into 2D magnetism and identifies a new set of promising monolayers for experimental investigation.

A complete catalogue of high-quality topological materials

Abstract:Using a recently developed formalism called topological quantum chemistry, we perform a high-throughput search of ‘high-quality’ materials (for which the atomic positions and structure have been measured very accurately) in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database in order to identify new topological phases. We develop codes to compute all characters of all symmetries of 26,938 stoichiometric materials, and find 3,307 topological insulators, 4,078 topological semimetals and no fragile phases. For these 7,385 materials we provide the electronic band structure, including some electronic properties (bandgap and number of electrons), symmetry indicators, and other topological information. Our results show that more than 27 per cent of all materials in nature are topological. We provide an open-source code that checks the topology of any material and allows other researchers to reproduce our results.

Abstract:We present a robust, automatic high-throughput workflow for the calculation of magnetic ground state of solid-state inorganic crystals, whether ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic, and their associated magnetic moments within the framework of collinear spin-polarized Density Functional Theory. This is done through a computationally efficient scheme whereby plausible magnetic orderings are first enumerated and prioritized based on symmetry, and then relaxed and their energies determined through conventional DFT + U calculations. This automated workflow is formalized using the atomate code for reliable, systematic use at a scale appropriate for thousands of materials and is fully customizable. The performance of the workflow is evaluated against a benchmark of 64 experimentally known mostly ionic magnetic materials of non-trivial magnetic order and by the calculation of over 500 distinct magnetic orderings. A non-ferromagnetic ground state is correctly predicted in 95% of the benchmark materials, with the experimentally determined ground state ordering found exactly in over 60% of cases. Knowledge of the ground state magnetic order at scale opens up the possibility of high-throughput screening studies based on magnetic properties, thereby accelerating discovery and understanding of new functional materials.

High-throughput Discovery of Topologically Non-trivial Materials using Spin-orbit Spillage

Abstract:We present a novel methodology to identify topologically non-trivial materials based on band inversion induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect. Specifically, we compare the density functional theory (DFT) based wavefunctions with and without spin-orbit coupling and compute the spin-orbit-spillage as a measure of band-inversion. Due to its ease of calculation, without any need for symmetry analysis or dense k-point interpolation, the spillage is an excellent tool for identifying topologically non-trivial materials. Out of 30000 materials available in the JARVIS-DFT database, we applied this methodology to more than 4835 non-magnetic materials consisting of heavy atoms and low bandgaps. We found 1868 candidate materials with high-spillage (using 0.5 as a threshold). We validated our methodology by carrying out conventional Wannier-interpolation calculations for 289 candidate materials. We demonstrate that in addition to Z2 topological insulators, this screening method successfully identified many semimetals and topological crystalline insulators. Importantly, our approach is applicable to the investigation of disordered or distorted as well as magnetic materials, because it is not based on symmetry considerations. Abstract:The exploration of topological states is of significant fundamental and practical importance in contemporary condensed matter physics, for which the extension to two-dimensional (2D) organometallic systems is particularly attractive. Using first-principles calculations, we show that a 2D hexagonal triphenyl-lead lattice composed of only main group elements is susceptible to a magnetic instability, characterized by a considerably more stable antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state rather than the topologically nontrivial quantum spin Hall state proposed recently. Even though thisAFMphase is topologically trivial, it possesses an intricate emergent degree of freedom, defined by the product of spin and valley indices, leading to Berry curvature-induced spin and valley currents under electron or hole doping. Furthermore, such a trivial band insulator can be tuned into a topologically nontrivial matter by the application of an out-of-plane electric field, which destroys the AFM order, favoring instead ferrimagnetic spin ordering and a quantum anomalous Hall state with a nonzero topological invariant. These findings further enrich our understanding of 2D hexagonal organometallic lattices for potential applications in spintronics and valleytronics.
Identification of materials with strong magneto-structural coupling using computational high-throughput screening

Abstract:Important phenomena such as magnetostriction, magnetocaloric, and magnetoelectric effects arise from, or could be enhanced by, the coupling of magnetic and structural degrees of freedom. The coupling of spin and lattice also influence transport and structural properties in magnetic materials in particular around phase transitions. In this paper we propose a method for screening materials for a strong magneto-structural coupling by assessing the effect of the local magnetic configuration on the atomic forces using density functional theory (DFT). We have employed the disordered local moment approach in a supercell formulation to probe different magnetic local configurations and their forces and performed a high-throughput search on binary and ternary compounds available in the Crystallographic Open Database. We identify a list of materials with a strong spin-lattice coupling out of which several are already known to display magneto-lattice coupling-phenomena like Fe3O4 and CrN. Others, such as Mn2CrO4 and CaFe7O11 have been less studied and are yet to reveal their potentials in experiments and applications.

Abstract:Topotactic transition is a structural phase change in a matrix crystal lattice mediated by the ordered loss/gain and rearrangement of atoms, leading to unusual coordination environments and metal atoms with rare valent states. As early as in 1990s, low temperature hydride reduction was utilized to realize the topotactic transition. Since then, topological transformations have been developed via multiple approaches. Especially, the recent discovery of the Ni-based superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has greatly boosted the topotactic transition mean to synthesizing new oxides for exploring exotic functional properties. In this review, we have provided a detailed and generalized introduction to oxygen-related topotactic transition. The main body of our review include four parts: the structure-facilitated effects, the mechanism of the topotactic transition, some examples of topotactic transition methods adopted in different metal oxides (V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and the related applications. This work is to provide timely and thorough strategies to successfully realize topotactic transitions for researchers who are eager to create new oxide phases or new oxide materials with desired functions.

Comprehensive Search for Topological Materials Using Symmetry Indicators

Abstract:Over the past decade, topological materials-in which the topology of electron bands in the bulk material leads to robust, unconventional surface states and electromagnetism-have attracted much attention. Although several theoretically proposed topological materials have been experimentally confirmed, extensive experimental exploration of topological properties, as well as applications in realistic devices, has been restricted by the lack of topological materials in which interference from trivial Fermi surface states is minimized. Here we apply our method of symmetry indicators to all suitable nonmagnetic compounds in all 230 possible space groups. A database search reveals thousands of candidate topological materials, of which we highlight 241 topological insulators and 142 topological crystalline insulators that have either noticeable full bandgaps or a considerable direct gap together with small trivial Fermi pockets. Furthermore, we list 692 topological semimetals that have band crossing points located near the Fermi level. These candidate materials open up the possibility of using topological materials in next-generation electronic devices.

Abstract:Topological materials discovery has evolved at a rapid pace over the past 15 years following the identification of the first nonmagnetic topological insulators (TIs), topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) and 3D topological semimetals (TSMs). Most recently, through complete analyses of symmetry-allowed band structures — including the theory of topological quantum chemistry (TQC) — researchers have determined crystal-symmetry-enhanced Wilson-loop and complete symmetry-based indicators for nonmagnetic topological phases, leading to the discovery of higher-order TCIs and TSMs. The recent application of TQC and related methods to high-throughput materials discovery has revealed that over half of the known stoichiometric, solid-state, nonmagnetic materials are topological at the Fermi level, over 85 per cent of the known stoichiometric materials host energetically isolated topological bands, and just under two-thirds of the energetically isolated bands in known materials carry the stable topology of a TI or TCI. In this Review, we survey topological electronic materials discovery in nonmagnetic crystalline solids from the prediction of the first 2D and 3D TIs to the recently introduced methods that have facilitated large-scale searches for topological materials. We also discuss future venues for the identification and manipulation of solid-state topological phases, including charge-density-wave compounds, magnetic materials, and 2D few-layer devices.

Abstract:Finding new two-dimensional (2D) materials with novel quantum properties is highly desirable for technological innovations. In this work, we studied a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal cores and discovered various attractive properties, such as room-temperature magnetic ordering, strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, huge topological band gap (>200meV), and excellent spin-filtering performance. As many MOFs have been successfully synthesized in experiments, our results suggest realistic new 2D functional materials for the design of spintronic nanodevices.
Large Itinerant Electron Exchange Coupling in the Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi2Te4

Abstract: Magnetism in topological materials creates phases exhibiting quantized transport phenomena with applications in spintronics and quantum information. The emergence of such phases relies on strong interaction between localized spins and itinerant states comprising the topological bands, and the subsequent formation of an exchange gap. However, this interaction has never been measured in any intrinsic magnetic topological material. Using a multimodal approach, this exchange interaction is measured in MnBi2Te4, the first realized intrinsic magnetic topological insulator. Interrogating nonequilibrium spin dynamics, itinerant bands are found to exhibit a strong exchange coupling to localized Mn spins. Momentum-resolved ultrafast electron scattering and magneto-optic measurements reveal that itinerant spins disorder via electron-phonon scattering at picosecond timescales. Localized Mn spins, probed by resonant X-ray scattering, disorder concurrently with itinerant spins, despite being energetically decoupled from the initial excitation. Modeling the results using atomistic simulations, the exchange coupling between localized and itinerant spins is estimated to be >100 times larger than superexchange interactions. This implies an exchange gap of >25 meV should occur in the topological surface states. By directly quantifying local-itinerant exchange coupling, this work validates the materials-by-design strategy of utilizing localized magnetic order to create and manipulate magnetic topological phases, from static to ultrafast timescales.

Abstract:Topological electronic materials such as bismuth selenide, tantalum arsenide and sodium bismuthide show unconventional linear response in the bulk, as well as anomalous gapless states at their boundaries. They are of both fundamental and applied interest, with the potential for use in high-performance electronics and quantum computing. But their detection has so far been hindered by the difficulty of calculating topological invariant properties (or topological nodes), which requires both experience with materials and expertise with advanced theoretical tools. Here we introduce an effective, efficient and fully automated algorithm that diagnoses the nontrivial band topology in a large fraction of nonmagnetic materials. Our algorithm is based on recently developed exhaustive mappings between the symmetry representations of occupied bands and topological invariants. We sweep through a total of 39,519 materials available in a crystal database, and find that as many as 8,056 of them are topologically nontrivial. All results are available and searchable in a database with an interactive user interface.

Abstract:Magnetism in topological materials creates phases exhibiting quantized transport phenomena with potential technological applications. The emergence of such phases relies on strong interaction between localized spins and the topological bands, and the consequent formation of an exchange gap. However, this remains experimentally unquantified in intrinsic magnetic topological materials. Here, this interaction is quantified in MnBi2Te4, an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. Momentum‐resolved ultrafast electron scattering and magneto‐optic measurements show that Bi‐Te p‐like states comprising the bulk topological bands demagnetize via electron‐phonon scattering at picosecond timescales. Localized Mn 3d spins, probed by ultrafast resonant X‐ray scattering, are found to disorder concurrently with the p‐like spins, despite being energetically decoupled from the optical excitation. These results, together with atomistic simulations, reveal that the exchange coupling between localized spins and the bulk topological bands is at least 100 times larger than the primary superexchange interaction, implying an optimal exchange gap of at least 25 meV in the topological surface states. By directly quantifying this exchange coupling, the study validates the materials‐by‐design strategy of utilizing localized magnetic order to create and manipulate magnetic topological phases, spanning static to ultrafast timescales. Perspective: Strongly correlated and topological states in [111] grown transition metal oxide thin films and heterostructures

Abstract:We highlight recent advances in the theory, materials fabrication, and experimental characterization of strongly correlated and topological states in [111] oriented transition metal oxide thin films and heterostructures, which are notoriously difficult to realize compared to their [001] oriented counterparts. We focus on two classes of complex oxides, with the chemical formula ABO3 and A2B2O7, where the B sites are occupied by an open-shell transition metal ion with a local moment, and the A sites are typically a rare earth. The [111] oriented quasi-two-dimensional lattices derived from these parent compound lattices can exhibit peculiar geometries and symmetries, namely, a buckled honeycomb lattice, as well as kagome and triangular lattices. These lattice motifs form the basis for emergent strongly correlated and topological states expressed in exotic magnetism, various forms of orbital ordering, topological insulators, topological semimetals, quantum anomalous Hall insulators, and quantum spin liquids. For transition metal ions with high atomic number, spin-orbit coupling plays a significant role and may give rise to additional topological features in the electronic band structure and in the spectrum of magnetic excitations. We conclude the Perspective by articulating open challenges and opportunities in this actively developing field.
