Abstract:Significant efforts have been devoted to developing new dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Fluoranthene is one typical cyclopentene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a rigid planarized structure, and thus could be an ideal building block to construct dopant-free HTMs, which have not been reported yet. Here, we report a new and simple synthetic method to prepare unreported 2,3-dicyano-fluoranthene through a Diels-Alder reaction between dibenzofulvene and tetracyanoethylene, and demonstrate that it can serve as an efficient electron-withdrawing unit for constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type HTMs. This novel building block not only endows the resulting molecules with suitable energy levels, but also enables highly ordered and strong molecular packing in solid states, both of which could facilitate hole extraction and transport. Thus with dopant-free HTMs, impressive efficiencies of 18.03% and 17.01% which are associated with enhanced stability can be achieved based on conventional n-i-p and inverted p-i-n PVSCs respectively, outperforming most organic dopant-free HTMs reported so far.

Abstract:Dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is significant to the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we developed a novel star-shape arylamine HTM, termed Py-DB, with a pyrene core and carbon-carbon double bonds as the bridge units. Compared to the reference HTM (termed Py-C), the extension of the planar conjugation backbone endows Py-DB with typical intermolecular p-p stacking interactions and excellent solubility, resulting in improved hole mobility and film morphology. In addition, the lower HOMO energy level of the Py-DB HTM provides efficient hole extraction with reduced energy loss at the perovskite/HTM interface. Consequently, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.33% was achieved for dopant-free Py-DB-based PSCs, which is the highest PCEs for dopant-free small molecular HTM in n-i-p configured PSCs. The dopant-free Py-DB-based device also exhibits improved long-term stability, retaining over 90% of its initial efficiency after 1000 h exposure to 25% humidity at 60 °C. These findings provide valuable insights and approaches for the further development of dopant-free HTMs for efficient and reliable PSCs.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are regarded as promising candidates for dopant-free hole-transport materials (HTMs) in efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Thus far, the vast majority of polymeric HTMs feature structurally complicated benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) analogs and electron-withdrawing heterocycles, forming a strong donor–acceptor (D–A) structure. Herein, a new class of phenanthrocarbazole (PC)-based polymeric HTMs (PC1, PC2, and PC3) has been synthesized by inserting a PC unit into a polymeric thiophene or selenophene chain with the aim of enhancing the π–π stacking of adjacent polymer chains and also to efficiently interact with the perovskite surface through the broad and planar conjugated backbone of the PC. Suitable energy levels, excellent thermostability, and humidity resistivity together with remarkable photoelectric properties are obtained via meticulously tuning the conformation and elemental composition of the polymers. As a result, PSCs containing PC3 as dopant-free HTM show a stabilized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.8% and significantly enhanced longevity, rendering one of the best types of PSCs based on dopant-free HTMs. Subsequent experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the planar conformation of the polymers contributes to an ordered and face-on stacking of the polymer chains. Furthermore, introduction of the "Lewis soft" selenium atom can passivate surface trap sites of perovskite films by Pb–Se interaction and facilitate the interfacial charge separation significantly. This work reveals the guiding principles for rational design of dopant-free polymeric HTMs and also inspires rational exploration of small molecular HTMs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Dissecting the relationship of lateral substituents in organic semiconductors with molecular packing motif, charge transfer integral, and thin film morphology is of paramount importance to enhancing the mobility of hole-transporting layers and photovoltaic performance of emerging perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, two dimethyltriphenylamino-substituted dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrroles are synthesized for the hole-transporting layer in triple-cation lead halide PSCs. X-ray crystallographic analysis of organic single crystals and theoretical modeling on the microscopic hole transport paths have disclosed that with respect to AZ1 possessing one n-propyl lateral substituent, the AZ2 hole transporter with 4-methoxyphenyl is characteristic of a closer intermolecular packing owing to a less short-axis slipped cofacial it-stacking configuration, and a larger averaged domain of molecule aggregates, which jointly contribute to a higher thin film hole mobility. The AZ2-based PSC exhibits an excellent power conversion efficiency of 19.4%, which is even higher than that (19.1%) of the control cell based on the state of the art hole-transporter spiro-OMeTAD. It seems that the weak interaction between 4-methoxyphenyl and lead ions at the perovskite boundaries can improve hole extraction kinetics and can passivate trap states at the perovskite surface, which brings forth a negligible hysteresis during the reverse and forward potential scans, along with high carrier mobility.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with n-i-p configuration demonstrated rapid progress in the past few years, though the most efficient devices were made using doped small molecular hole-transport material, spiro-OMeTAD, which deteriorates their long-term stability. To address this problem, dopant-free hole transport materials should be developed. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of poly(4-(5'-(16-(3,4'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-[2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)pyranthren-8-yl)-3',4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-[2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole) (PATTBTT), which is considered as a promising hole-transport material for PSCs. The designed copolymer PATTBTT delivered power conversion efficiency of 17.6% in PSCs, which was higher than obtained for the reference devices fabricated using dopant-free polytriaryalamine-based hole-transport material. These results demonstrate that pyranthrene-based conjugated polymers represent a promising new family of materials for high-efficiency perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping dopant‐free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is of vital importance for addressing the notorious stability issue of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, efficient dopant‐free HTMs are scarce. Herein, we improve the performance of dopant‐free HTMs featuring with a quinoxaline core via rational π‐extension. Upon incorporating rotatable or chemically fixed thienyl substitutes on the pyrazine ring, the resulting molecular HTMs TQ3 and TQ4 show completely different molecular arrangement as well as charge transporting capabilities. Comparing with TQ3, the coplanar π‐extended quinoxaline based TQ4 endows enriched intermolecular interactions and stronger π–π stacking, thus achieving a higher hole mobility of 2.08×10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. It also shows matched energy levels and high thermal stability for application in PSCs. Planar n‐i‐p structured PSCs employing dopant‐free TQ4 as HTM exhibits power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 21 % with excellent long‐term stability.
Fused Dithienopicenocarbazole Enabling High Mobility Dopant-Free Hole-Transporting Polymers for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:As a critical component in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), hole-transporting materials (HTMs) have been extensively explored. To develop efficient dopant-free HTMs for PSCs, a decent hole mobility (>10–3 cm2 V–1 s–1) is critically essential, which is, however, seldom reported. In this work, we introduce two novel donor–acceptor (D–A) type conjugated polymers (PDTPC-1 and PDTPC-2) with narrow bandgap unit, i.e., fused dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), as the donor building block and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole derivatives as the acceptors. The highly planar and strong electron-donating DTPC endows the polymers with superior hole mobility up to ∼4 × 10–3 cm2 V–1 s–1. Because of the better energy alignment with perovskite and excellent film-forming property, PSCs with PDTPC-1 as HTM show an appreciably enhanced PCE of ∼17% in dopant-free PSCs along with improved device stability as opposed to PDTPC-2. Abstract:The exploration of dopant‐free hole‐transporting materials (HTM) with excellent optoelectronic properties and defect passivation ability is of great significance for simultaneously improving the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, two donor–acceptor (D–A) type conjugated polymers PTTDZ‐F and PTTDZ‐Cl with alternating benzodithiophene (BDT) and thienothiadiazole (TTD) units are successfully developed with desirable hole mobilities and conductivities. The formation of non‐covalent interaction (S···N) between thiophene bridge and TTD units significantly improved the co‐planarity of the molecular backbone and promoted the intramolecular charge‐transfer from BDT to TTD. The hydrophobicity and energy levels of the polymers are finely regulated via introducing different halogen atoms on the BDT moiety. Moreover, the functional groups in polymers efficiently passivate the surface charged traps in perovskite. As a result, champion power conversion efficiencies of 21.50% and 22.20% along with negligible hysteresis have been achieved for devices based on dopant‐free PTTDZ‐F and PTTDZ‐Cl, respectively. The unencapsulated devices also demonstrate excellent long‐term operational stability. Over 93% of their initial efficiencies can be retained after 320 h of maximum output power point tracking under 1 sun illumination (white light LED array). This study paves a new avenue for developing highly stable and efficient HTMs for PSCs. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hole-transport materials (HTM) play a crucial role in functioning perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this research, we develop and synthesize two pyrrolo[3,2-b] pyrrole core (PP) based small molecular HTMs, FPPY and BPPY with/without (w/wo) fluorine (F) substitution on PP core that connected to the carbazole diphenylamine peripheral end groups, respectively. The F-substituted fused electron-rich pyrrole ring core greatly impacts FPPY molecular surface charge distribution, which contributes to higher hole extraction properties and excellent band alignment. Finally, FPPY -based PSCs obtain a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.3 %, significantly higher than BPPY (20.1 %). After aging 2000 h at ambient condition (25 °C, 30–50 % RH), the FPPY -based device still keeps over 87 % of its initial PCE.

Abstract:In this paper, two novel D‐π‐D hole‐transporting materials (HTM) are reported, abbreviated as BDT‐PTZ and BDT‐POZ, which consist of 4,8‐di(hexylthio)‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) as π‐conjugated linker, and N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenothiazine (PTZ)/N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenoxazine (POZ) as donor units. The above two HTMs are deployed in p‐i‐n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as dopant‐free HT layers, exhibiting excellent power conversion efficiencies of 18.26% and 19.16%, respectively. Particularly, BDT‐POZ demonstrates a superior fill factor of 81.7%, which is consistent with its more efficient hole extraction and transport verified via steady‐state/transient fluorescence spectra and space‐charge‐limited current technique. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction characterization implies these two molecules present diverse packing tendencies, which may account for various interfacial hole‐transport ability in PSCs.

Abstract:Two A‐D‐A type 2D small molecules with longitudinal conjugate extension using triphenylamine groups as side chains are successfully developed. The 2D small molecules show a dominant face‐on orientation and better hole transport mobility. A champion efficiency of 21.44% is achieved using the dopant‐free 2D small molecule hole transport material in perovskite solar cells along with improved stability. Developing dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) to replace Spiro‐OMeTAD is a challenging but urgent issue for commercialization of state‐of‐the‐art n‐i‐p structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, this work proposes an effective two‐dimensional conjugate engineering strategy to tune molecular stacking orientation and improve the hole mobility of dopant‐free small molecule HTMs. For the first time, triphenylamine (TPA) groups are incorporated as side chains of benzo [1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) unit to extend the longitudinal conjugate, achieving two donor‐acceptor‐acceptor type 2D small molecules, namely XF2 and XF3, which show a dominant face‐on orientation and better hole transport mobility than the linear small molecule XF1. The incorporation of alkoxy Lewis base groups makes XF3 a more effective defect passivator for perovskite surfaces. As a result, the PSCs using pristine XF3 HTM show a dramatically improved efficiency of 20.59% along with improved long‐term stability compared to that of XF1 HTM (power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 18.84%). A champion efficiency of 21.44% is achieved through device engineering for dopant‐free XF3‐based PSCs. The results show that the building block with longitudinal conjugate extension in small molecules plays an essential role in the face‐on orientation morphology and elucidates a key design rule for the dopant‐free small molecule HTMs for high‐performance PSCs.

Abstract:A novel 4,4'-dimethoxy triphenylamine (donor), thiophene (bridge), and fluorine substituted benzothiadiazole (FBTD, acceptor) based molecule with D-A-D structure was synthesized via two steps from commercial precursors. The absorption, emission, thermal and electrochemical properties of the molecule was examined. The compound possesses planar molecular configuration, suitable energy level, high hole mobility and excellent thermal stability. When used as dopant-free hole transport material (HTM) in planar perovskite solar cell (PSC), the devices obtained a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.9% with good ambient stability by maintaining 87% of the initial efficiency after 480 h degradation. Those results enable us further understand the potential of FBTD as a promising building block of HTM for highly efficient PSCs.

Abstract:Longevity has been a long-standing challenge for perovskite photovoltaics. In general, Li-TFSI/t-BP are the stateof-the-art bi-dopants for the hole-transporting layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), although such dopants significantly diminish the stability of devices. Here, we reported a novel dopant of fluorinated iron(III) porphine (Fe(III)-PP) as a potential alternative to the Li-TFSI/t-BP. The optimized PSCs exhibit a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.73%, which outperforms the standard bi-dopants Li-TFSI/t-BP (21.07%). The high migration barrier together with the hydrophobic nature of the Fe(III)-PP, which in turn suppress intrinsic ion migration and alleviate extrinsic moisture-induced degradation, resulting in prominent improvement of longterm stability of PSCs up to 1200 h under air exposure without encapsulation.
