Abstract:The tradition of children’s literature has evolved side by side with the market of children’s entertainment, games, and toys. The selection of contemporary print products includes a wide variety of materially or technologically enhanced picture books. This background is rarely considered in the examination of children’s book applications that have attracted scholarly interest after the arrival of smartphones and tablets during the early 2010s.The relationship between picture book apps, mobile games, and digital playthings requires further examination that considers the specific affordances of the mobile platform. Leaning on five case studies, this article examines how picture book apps afford opportunities for a reading experience that contains features characteristic for children’s digital play. For this purpose, I adapt a specific model of close reading that focuses on the visual, auditory, tactile, and performative elements of children’s video games.On the basis of the case studies, it seems that navigating a picture book app requires balancing between different modes of action: reading, playing, and exploring. Engagement with picture book apps has different forms that resemble the features of both traditional print reading and digital play. However, further examination of children’s playful reading practices and intergenerational play is necessary from a premise that recognizes playing with a book as a valuable research topic.

Abstract:In the review of Ann-Hege Lorvik Waterhouse’s book I materialenes verden; perspektiver og praksiser i barnehagens kunstneriske virksomhet (In the material world: Perspectives and practices in kindergarten art activities), Frisch states that despite the fact that the author is in some ways critical of the impact Reggio Emilia has had on Norwegian kindergartens, in her opinion, the book's content rests on the shoulders of the exploratory child-centred educational philosophy. The book offers great, relevant images related to new reflective concrete ideas, and it has a beautiful layout. Waterhouse points out her core argument several places in the text: a good kindergarten teacher is a creative kindergarten teacher – and the book reviewer adds, a good kindergarten teacher is a reading, reflecting kindergarten teacher.

Picture Books, Imagination and Play: Pathways to Positive Reading Identities for Young Children

Abstract:Picture books are part of many young children's lives, whether at home or in early childhood or school settings. Their unique creative combinations of words and visual images can engage children's attention, stimulate their imagination, and support their development as meaning-makers. Nurturing a love of books in young children can foster the development not only of early literacy skills, but also positive reading identities. Early childhood educators therefore have key roles to play as selectors, analysts and mediators of picture books. This article aims to build educators' awareness of these roles through the analytical discussion of a small group of picture books selected for their focus on children's imaginative worlds. Children need to see themselves in books, and given that play and imagination are central to young children's ways of being and learning, picture books about children engaged in imagination and play can be important resources for nurturing a love of reading and fostering positive reading identities in young children. This pedagogical position paper explores a small sample of such books and discusses their value as part of early literacy curriculum.

Abstract:Children's literature helps young people make sense of gender. However, while books offer children the imaginative ability to create their own worlds, normative gender can manifest in characters and stories. The study described in this article draws upon ‘disruptive’ storytimes with 114 preschool children, interviews with 20 parents and staff, and observations at 20 preschools. Employing a feminist, queer approach, I develop two derivative books that switch a boy-hero for a girl and vice versa. These books are read to children in educational settings. This method interrogates gendered characters and stories’ attachments to such concepts as love, acceptance, bodily agency, and adventure. Results show how children interact with these characters and stories and how they use categorisation and narrative construction to make sense of gender. I focus on the gender discourses at play and moments of childhood discursive agency. Themes include literature, doing and being, positioning, bodies, and feminist tales.

A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of having diverse library collections that take into account numerous factors, such as race, class, disability, and religion. This column also offers innovative approaches for bringing children and books together, as well as content analyses and rich descriptions of titles that share common features (e.g., endpapers, the blending of poetry and nonfiction).

Abstract:The article is based on the review of the book by Hanna Dymel-Trzebiatowska Philosophical and Translational Migrations in the Moomin Valley (2019). Interdisciplinary considerations concern the issue of the multi-addressee nature of works intentionally aimed at a young audience, and their basis is the analysis and interpretation of Tove Jansson’s series on Moomins, deeply rooted in philosophical contexts. In the interpretation of the saga of the Finnish writer, Dymel-Trzebiatowska refers to various aspects of the theory and practice of reception as well as to selected issues belonging to the area of theory and practice of translation. In interpretative contexts, the researcher also distinguishes psychoanalytical critique, cognitive poetics, existential philosophy, the broadly understood philosophy of ethics and childhood anthropology, thanks to which her book fits perfectly into contemporary discussions on the function, place, role and status of children’s literature, its meaning in the wider cultural circuit literary and – potentially – also its presence in the field of Polish studies.
Pictures and picturing: mental imagery whilst reading illustrated novels

Abstract:The medium of illustrated novels has been neglected by educational research, and the limited current research on the influence of illustrations on a reader's mental images is largely negative in tone. However, by adopting a participatory multiple case study methodology, this research provides a new understanding of the nature of mental picturing when reading illustrated novels. In exploring the responses of five 9–10-year-old participants to three illustrated novels, this study demonstrates that the interactions between illustrations and mental pictures are more complex than previously theorised. In addition, far from having a negative impact upon mental picturing, the potential of illustrations to interact with mental pictures should be embraced by practitioners as an opportunity for growth, enjoyment, and increased criticality and creativity.

Abstract:In the last ten years, historical fiction picturebooks have won numerous children’s literature awards and have assumed a prominent role in the literacy landscape of elementary and middle school classrooms. Whether read in read-alouds, study groups, as a focus of genre study, or as a supplement to the social studies curriculum, historical fiction picturebooks are a ubiquitous feature of elementary classrooms. What is problematic is the central focus in elementary reading education on teaching the strategies and skills necessary for understanding written text. When this is the case, the visual images and design features of the text are often overlooked, and readers’ construction of meaning with textual features (printed words) is privileged. This article highlights how purposeful instruction in visual and design systems of meaning of historical fiction picturebooks moved readers beyond literal elements of the texts and images, encouraged readers to construct meanings from a variety of perspectives, and created spaces for critical reading and inquiry.
Gender Roles in Children's Literature: A Review of Non-Award-Winning “Easy-to-Read” Books

Abstract:This study replicates the work of Crabb and Bielawski (1994), who analyzed gender differences in character representation found in Caldecott award-winning children's literature, in relation to the utilization of production, household, and leisure artifacts. This study examines non-award-winning “easy-to-read” books. The data showed that both female and male characters are most likely to be pictured in a leisure activity. Otherwise, male characters are apt to be seen with a production artifact, while few are shown with a household artifact. For female characters, if they are not in a leisure activity, they are equally likely to be seen with either a household or production artifact. The real difference in character depiction lies with male characters not being featured in household activities. These findings were different from Crabb and Bielawski's study. They found that female characters were most likely represented utilizing a household artifact, while male characters were primarily depicted with production artifacts.

Abstract:This academic investigation scrutinizes a less-explored dimension of Virginia Woolf's literary legacy, examining her nuanced engagement with children's literature and culture. Focused on comprehending Woolf within the realm of children's literature, our study selects representative works to explore the author's radical and challenging modernist contributions to this genre. Primary sources for analysis include two short stories, "The Widow and the Parrot" (1988) and "Nurse Lugton’s Curtain" (1991), originally penned for her nephews and posthumously adapted into widely accessible picturebooks for children globally. Extending beyond Woolf's direct creations for her family, our exploration delves into various artistic representations of her in works such as Kyo Maclear and Isabelle Arsenault's fictional picturebook Virginia Wolf (2012) and Michèle Gazier and Bernard Ciccolini's graphic novel Virginia Woolf (2011). Furthermore, her life is vividly portrayed in Zena Alkayat and Nina Cosford's illustrated biography, Virginia Woolf: An Illustrated Biography (2015). Significantly, Woolf's bestselling novel and biographical experiment, Flush (1933), regains prominence through a recent illustrated edition. Our article does not seek exhaustive coverage of Woolf's entire foray into children's literature but rather aims to dissect specific facets represented by carefully chosen literary works.

Abstract:Abstracte-Books share some key features with traditional printed picture books, but also include distinct features such as live animation, interactive components, and the operation of the technology that require new approaches to shared reading with young children. The purpose of this paper is to better inform adults working with young children (teachers, child care providers, and parents) of important factors to consider when choosing and sharing e-books with young children. We discuss why to share e-books with young children; types of e-books and how to evaluate them; how adults can best support young children’s language and literacy development through shared readings of e-books, including examples of shared readings of an e-book with young children; and an exploration of the potential of e-books to support meaningful interactions around texts.

Abstract:In a review of the collective monograph “Children’s Reading: Problems of Reception and Interpretation” (2020, eds. by V. D. Chernyak and M. A. Chernyak) and the book by Maria Chernyak and Elena Tsvetkova “DETLIT in an Adult Way: Biblionavigator for Contemporary Children’s Literature” (2022) characterizes these publications and reveals their thematic and substantive connections. The author of the review emphasizes the relevance of the problems posed and ways to solve them, and notes the current trends in literary literature for children identified by researchers. The reviewer discusses some positions and conclusions with the authors, but, in general, has a positive assessment of the result of their research. The authors of the collective monograph introduce into scientific circulation meaningful observations about the language of children’s literature, its perception by child readers and interpretation of texts, and draw attention to comments on works included in the range of children’s reading. In the book by Maria Chernyak and Elena Tsvetkova, the emphasis is placed on the ability to navigate the latest in modern children’s literature, which, according to the reviewer, lies in the productivity and scientific significance of the publication. The author of the review emphasizes the successful structure and composition of the library navigator and draws attention to the originality of the material.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine whether the methods used in the 70s and 80s to examine gender stereotypes in picture books were still valid. The visual texts of fifteen Caldecott medal and honor books were examined for the presence or absence of twenty pre-determined behavior characteristics using both an old and a new coding schema. Using the new coding schema, four behavior characteristics changed dramatically: dependent and emotional decreased while independent and nontraditional increased. The results of the new coding schema also fashioned a behavioral profile for the main female characters in the books examined. The characters were found to be independent, active, passive, and traditional. The inclusion of the active trait in the new profile was supported by the results of previous studies on gender stereotyping. Each of the other attributes appeared in the behavioral profiles of at least one of the other studies examined.

Abstract:Based on the posthuman new materialism, we would like to examine the characteristics of Baek Hee-na or picture books and the entanglement between humans and more-than-human’ world. After selecting four picture books: “Strange Mom,” “A Strange Guest ,” “Magic Candies” and “I'm a Dog,”, diffraction analysis was conducted. Baek Hee-na picture books have the characteristics of polystyled entanglement of text-picture texts, the lively and related material (world) system, and various emotions in daily life. Next, Baek Hee-na's picture books were intertwined with post-human new materialism, first with 'acting background: assemblage relationship among all', second with 'cross-existence breaking boundaries: strange hybrid', and third with 'response to non-human beings: ability: relationship and ethics of care'. The discourse on posthuman new materialism became materialized with the world of picture books. This paper’s proposition may broaden the academy to discuss the theoretical picture books foundations and directions of early childhood education in the posthuman era.
Across Textual Landscapes: The Role of Affect During Digital Reading Encounters

Abstract:This article addresses questions related to how the change in the textual landscape, from paper-based books to electronic books, has an effect on the teaching of reading in early childhood classrooms as well as how the digital devices relate to different aspects of reading instruction. Drawing on the theoretical concept of affect, the purpose is to expand knowledge about processes of experiencing literary digital texts that are enacted and produced in a Swedish classroom when the teacher and the six-year-old students encounter digital narrative texts. The study draws on ethnographical methods to collect empirical material using video recording, field notes, and small interviews with children. The documentation includes both individual and collaborative reading of digital narratives. Discussed in the intersection between envisionment and affect, the results show that e-book activities create multiple and differing processes of reading. The metacognitive processes initiated by the teacher's instruction of reading strategies create a distance between the student and the text, while processes of embodied sense-making create a closeness to the text that seems to be vital when the students encounter digital narratives and text worlds. These findings may contribute to educational as well as edu-political discussions about pedagogical rationales for e-book activities in which the dynamic and essential relation between body, space, and reading is made prominent.

Abstract:Picturebooks play a vital role in the lives and learning of young children. These complex, multimodal texts offer unique opportunities for meaning-making as readers engage with the interplay between text and illustrations. Picturebooks offer children stepping stones into the literary arts, providing information and storylines that illuminate readers' perspectives about their own lives as well as offering opportunities to glimpse the lives of others. This article provides an overview of current perspectives of picturebooks, focusing on their potential (i.e., the unique qualities this literary format offers young readers), their power (i.e., the invitations these books provide for supporting readers' authentic literary transactions and affective responses), and associated practices (i.e., the ways in which these texts can be used as instructional tools to support learning both within and beyond the curriculum). Through picturebooks, caring adults can nurture children's reading and responses in supportive, developmentally appropriate, and impactful ways.

Abstract:<p>Digital books, such as e‐books, story apps, picture book apps, and interactive stories, are narratives presented on touchscreens with multimedia and interactive features. Evidence suggests that early reading of print versus digital books is associated with different patterns of parent–child engagement and children's outcomes. Parents' verbal scaffolding, children's age, and the congruence between a book's narrative and its interactive and multimedia features are three documented process variables that explain the difference between reading print and digital books. To maximize the added value of digital books for children, we need to study the interaction among the characteristics of parents, children, and books; we also need to target these interactions through interventions and through collaborations between designers and researchers.</p>
