Abstract:This chapter describes how a Canadian elementary teacher differentiated her instruction in catering to students’ diverse learning needs in mathematics from the perspective of a Chinese researcher. Data are from 17 mathematics classroom observations and approximately 12 hours of semi-structured interviews with this teacher from a public elementary school in Toronto, Canada. Analysis revealed that this teacher tended to design parallel tasks and open-ended questions, changed the number of activities for some students, used real-life situations for problem-solving-oriented teaching, was flexible with the tasks, and built a safe learning environment to enable all students to have the opportunity to participate in mathematics learning. This teacher believes that teachers should pay attention to the way they teach mathematics, and should cater to students’ interests and diverse learning needs, and that teachers should have a growth mindset themselves when it comes to teaching mathematics.
