Abstract:Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polyurethane foam (PUF) are commonly used as building insulation material for energy savings; however, the fire risk is high because insulation material ignites easily and combusts upon exposure to external heat sources. Insulation materials are regarded as solid fuels, which undergo pyrolysis before combustion. Therefore, elucidating insulation material pyrolysis is an important aspect of efforts to predict combustion and fire phenomenon in these materials. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted to investigate the pyrolysis behavior of EPS and PUF in a nitrogen atmosphere using four heating rates. The results showed that the pyrolysis of EPS and PUF in nitrogen occurred through one- and two-weight loss reactions, respectively. Based on the pyrolysis temperatures obtained via TGA, the effective activation energies were determined using multiple model-free methods. The pre-exponential factors were calculated by applying the kinetic compensation effect from the reaction mechanism established using the model-fitting method. Additionally, the material activation energies and pre-exponential factors determined from experiments could be used as pyrolysis properties for numerical predictions of fire using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Numerical simulations were conducted to validate the material activation energies and pre-exponential factors determined from experiments based on the FDS pyrolysis model.

Abstract:During the decomposition process of the entitled material in presence of air, the degradation products of the flame retardant (deca-bromdiphenyloxide) are produced as well as polystyrene components. In addition compounds were formed resulting from reactions between the devolatilization products of the polymer and the flame retardant, e.g. especially benzyl bromide, brominated styrene derivates, bromoethylbenzene and 4-bromotoluene.The apparatus used, has been described in previous papers (1,2), but additionally an instrumental modification of the buring apparatus has been made according to DIN 4102, this work deals with comparison of the results by use of both, the Bayer-ICI-Shell apparatus and our self-designed burning apparatus.

Abstract:Thermogravimetric combustion characteristics of ginkgo leaves (GK), pine needles (PN), corn straw (CS), aspen leaves (AS), and white poplar leaves (WP) were studied. Results showed that the combustion of selected samples consisted of at least two weight loss stages. Besides, characteristic temperatures lagged towards high temperature zones under high heating rate, which was considered as the effect of insufficient transfer of heat. The combustion of volatile compounds and char from PN and CS was isolated under high heating rate and consequently the exothermic rate around 300 degrees C was intensified and the exothermic rate over 400 degrees C was decreased, while the maximum heat release rates of GK, AS, and WP were transferred into high temperature zones with the increasing of heating rate. The average activation energy of PN and CS was high though their combustion completed at a lower temperature, which was possibly due to the low average energy of molecules in samples in low temperature environment. The aromaticity, degree of condensation, CH2/CH3, and structure parameters of oxygen-containing functional groups were calculated according to the peak areas derived from the convolution of FTIR spectra. These parameters explained the discrepancy in both reactivity and exothermic behaviors of biomass samples during combustion.

Abstract:There are various methodologies available for the determination of flammability properties of non-charring polymeric materials (Int. J. Transp. Phenomena 1 (1999) 79; Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Fire Safety Science, 1991, p. 167; Methodology and validation for material flammability properties, Combust. Flame, August 2002, accepted for publication). This paper presents a demonstration, validation and extension of a distinct methodology for obtaining the flammability properties of charring materials. Australian radiata pine was used for the study wherein ignition and pyrolysis characteristics were obtained using a cone calorimeter. The deduced properties were applied for the prediction of ignition and pyrolysis histories of wood. These predictions were compared with the data obtained from the cone calorimeter at different imposed heat fluxes and wood thickness and a close agreement was observed between the theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:Thermal insulation materials are important for building energy conservation, but their wastes have increased sharply. Furthermore, pyrolysis and combustion are increasingly utilized to dispose of solid wastes and convert them into value-added fuels. To better understand the pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of these materials, typical thermal insulation materials (expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS)) were investigated by employing thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry as well as cone calorimetry experiments. Pyrolysis behavior, kinetic parameters, pyrolysis index, thermodynamic parameters, endothermic properties and combustion parameters were estimated comprehensively. The results showed that EPS had better pyrolysis properties, while XPS had better combustion characteristics. Activation energies of EPS and XPS were 158.82 kJ/mol and 200.70 kJ/mol, respectively. Additionally, EPS had a higher pyrolysis stability index and comprehensive pyrolysis index, meaning a more intense reaction. Moreover, thermodynamic parameters indicated that the devolatilization products could be obtained easily from the two materials, and EPS and XPS could be converted into fuels. For the combustion, XPS had a smaller fire performance index and a larger fire growth index. These results can guide the reactor design and optimization for better converting polymer wastes into fuels and managing wastes.

Abstract:The assessment of the efficacy and mode of action of flame retardants in polymers requires a thorough knowledge of the coupling of the presence of chemical inhibitors with the underlying heat and mass transport processes. In this experimental work, we combine a thermal decomposition analysis with optical combustion diagnostics in different test environments to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant sub-processes and demonstrate how this approach provides future opportunities for the research regarding the mode of action of flame retardants. Four different composites of polypropylene (PP) and 10 wt% of selected flame retardants as well as neat PP are prepared. Flame retardants include pentaerythritol spirobis(methylphosphonate) (PSMP), zinc diethylphosphinate (DEPZn), aluminum hydroxide (i.e. aluminum trihydrate, ATH) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The released substances in the gas phase are investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis coupled to Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR), and the burning behavior regarding carbon monoxide concentration and heat release rate (HRR) is studied in cone calorimeter experiments. The ignition and combustion of flame retarded micrometer-sized particles of PP are experimentally investigated in a laminar flat flame burner by means of simultaneous scanning planar laser-induced fluorescence of OH radicals (OH-PLIF) and diffuse back-illumination (DBI) at a repetition rate of 10 kHz. Particles with gas-phase activity show a decreased normalized OH signal intensity during combustion. A dependency of the dimensionless flame radius on the particle size is found which can be linked to the faster heating and pyrolysis of smaller particles compared to large particles and agglomerations. Eventually, the interaction with an external premixed flame and the subsequent extinction of self-sustaining flames of polymer sticks is investigated using OH-PLIF in an adapted horizontal burning test suited for the application of optical diagnostics. This approach allows to link the findings of investigations encompassing multiple scales, resulting in a thorough understanding of both polymer chemistry and combustion dynamics in flame retarded polymers.

Abstract:The characterization of pyrolysis behaviour of six combustibles in Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) was carried out by using the thermal analysis method. The experimental results show that the heating value of MSW was high. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) on different combustibles in MSW are reported. The gaseous pyrolysis products were analyzed. The combustion process of MSW can be expressed by one or two first-order reactions. Two categories of pyrolysis characteristics were classified for combustibles in MSW. Analyzing the pyrolysis products of these combustibles show that the pyrolysis of combustibles in MSW produces synthetic gases with a high calorific value. The gaseous products are mainly pyrolysis products of cellulose, CO and CO2, and those of polymer, hydrocarbons.

Abstract:To review the thermal analysis and flame spread hazards of thermal insulation materials, some research work during the past several years by SKLFS would be concluded in this paper. XPS, EPS, and PU were selected to undergo a series of thermal analysis experiments. We used TG-FTIR-GC/MS and explored the degradation mechanism of XPS and PU. The volatile gases during degradation process were analyzed. Then some studies on the radiation and thickness effects on XPS calorimetry were explored. Dr. Chen in SKLFS did some numerical studies on ignition hazards of PU and XPS. Then thermal insulation materials have conducted a series of bench-scale flame spread experiments with the effects of location altitude, sample width, thickness, and inclination angle.

Abstract:Currently, waste disposal has been highlighted strategically all over the world. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) with a high calorific value is manufactured from municipal solid waste (MSW). Thermogravimetric Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and distributed activation energy model (DAEM) were utilized to study the pyrolysis of the individual components and their mixture (i.e. SRF), which were obtained from a MSW incineration power plant. The best operating conditions were defined by comparing the effect of heating rates and flow rates of sweep gas. The gaseous products and functional groups in the pyrolysis of each component and their mixture were researched. Additionally, a direct search method was presented to obtain the DAEM kinetic parameters. DAEM equations for volatile products were given to describe pyrolysis of SRF. The model prediction results are consistent with the experimental results. The kinetic data will provide a basis for gas composition regulation from theoretical modeling.

Abstract:Abstract The amount of heat, which is released by fire loads during the combustion process, depends on the material characteristics, the ventilation conditions, the storage density and the distribution. To evaluate the structural stability of buildings in case of fire, the fire load has to be quantified. In Germany, the fire load is quantified by using the combustion factor m, while internationally the combustion efficiency χ is applied. Both factors assess the burning behavior of materials, but the determination is carried out in different ways. Since the testing facility was abolished fifteen years ago, it is not possible to determine the combustion factor m anymore. So, it should be found out, if the combustion efficiency χ is a convenient method to quantify the fire load under the consideration of the German standards. As a part of the research, combustion efficiencies χ were determined for eight materials in the cone calorimeter and the single burning item test at different heat fluxes. The values of the combustion efficiencies χ as well as the corresponding combustion factors m were discussed and compared to the values of the literature. The results show an influence of the testing facility on the combustion efficiency. The values of the combustion efficiency determined in the single burning item test were higher than the values from the cone calorimeter.

Abstract:Building polymers implemented into building panels and exterior façades have been determined as the major contributor to severe fire incidents, including the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire incident. To gain a deeper understanding of the pyrolysis process of these polymer composites, this work proposes a multi-scale modelling framework comprising of applying the kinetics parameters and detailed pyrolysis gas volatiles (parent combustion fuel and key precursor species) extracted from Molecular Dynamics models to a macro-scale Computational Fluid Dynamics fire model. The modelling framework was tested for pure and flame-retardant polyethylene systems. Based on the modelling results, the chemical distribution of the fully decomposed chemical compounds was realised for the selected polymers. Subsequently, the identified gas volatiles from solid to gas phases were applied as the parent fuel in the detailed chemical kinetics combustion model for enhanced predictions of toxic gas, charring, and smoke particulate predictions. The results demonstrate the potential application of the developed model in the simulation of different polymer materials without substantial prior knowledge of the thermal degradation properties from costly experiments.

Comprehensive laboratory study on smoke gases during the thermal oxidative decomposition of forest and vegetation fuels

Abstract:This study investigates the composition of smoke gases in forest and vegetation samples to draw conclusions about the actual smoke gas composition during wildfires. The focus is particularly on regions with extensive pine forests, like in Eastern Germany. The relevance of smoke gases is well illustrated by the example of wildfires in Québec, influencing air quality in New York, in 2023. By employing a modified DIN tube furnace, a bench‐scale test set‐up, the research emphasizes the examination of smoke composition from tree species and ground cover, prioritizing gases while disregarding particles. Key smoke gases are identified as CO, CO2, SO2, HCN, C3H4O (acrolein) and CH2O (formaldehyde) and their concentrations are compared with Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (AEGL) limits. Acknowledging the limitations of AEGL usage and the problem with direct quantitative comparison of toxicant concentrations (cf. ISO 29903‐1:2020), the study highlights variations in smoke composition across different samples. The results of the studies reveal a significant disparity in CO concentration between dry and fresh pine needles. Frequently, the AEGLs of key gases are exceeded significantly. The elemental analysis of the barks indicates distinct differences in composition, reflecting in the concentrations of smoke gases. The ratio of 1 mole of substance turnover to the identified key components will be used to determine input parameters for the subsequent numerical simulation.

Abstract:Thermal insulation materials are widely installed on external walls because of their excellent properties. However, thermal insulation materials are often exposed to air and sunlight as external facades fall off, which can lead to weathering and potential fire risk. Especially, weathering may cause changes in pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of thermal insulation materials, which is of great significance for understanding fire. To simulate real exposure conditions, typical thermal insulation materials (expanded polystyrene) were weathered by accelerated weathering for 25, 45, 90, 135 and 180 days. Pyrolysis characteristics of unweathered and weathered materials were researched by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometric technique and cone calorimeter experiments. The kinetic parameters were estimated and optimized using CoatsRedfern and Shuffled Complex Evolution methods. Subsequently, the correlation between weathering time and kinetic parameters was obtained. The functional groups were detected by FTIR. Finally, the ignition time was measured. The results showed that the color of materials changed and the chalking appeared as accelerated weathering increased. Activation energy decreased from 324.44 kJ/mol to 91.04 kJ/mol, and pre-exponential factors reduced from 52.31 lns(-1) to 10.72 lns(-1). The intensity of vibration bands was strengthened. Ignition time was shortened by 119 s, indicating that weathered EPS is more easily ignited.
Preservation of geochemical markers during co-combustion of hard coal and various domestic waste materials

Abstract:Combustion of domestic waste for heating purposes in non-adapted furnaces is a common environmental problem all over the world since it leads to significant emission of harmful substances to the atmosphere. In this project fly and bottom ash from hard coal and domestic waste co-combustion were investigated on the occurrence and distribution of geochemical markers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and their alkyl derivatives. Hard coal with a domestic waste admixture (paper, ethylene propylene diene rubber, tire rubber, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride) was combusted in a certified domestic central heating furnace equipped with a control and measurement system. Fly ash was collected on glass microfiber filters inside the flue gas chimney. Raw fuels, fly and bottom ash extracts were analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Geochemical markers survived the coal/domestic waste combustion and can be identified despite the presence of other organic compounds derived from domestic waste thermal decay. The highest changes in distribution and values of geochemical ratios concern light-weight compounds, i.e. lighter n-alkanes and acyclic isoprenoids (pristane and phytane), with distinct differences between fly and bottom ash. n-Alkanes expulsion significantly decreased values of Pr/n-C17 and Ph/n-C18 ratios. Due to their high molecular weight pentacyclic triterpanes mostly retained their original distributions; however, some shifts in values of their thermal maturity ratios occurred due to artificial maturation of organic matter under the heat of combustion. PAHs diagnostic ratios showed variable utility in the indication of domestic waste admixture to hard coal combusted. The highest sensitivity was found for BaP/BghiP, MPI-1, and MPI-3 whereas Fl/(Fl + Py) rather pointed out at hard coal dominating in the fuel mixture. The addition of EPDM and tires significantly worsened the quality of combustion, which is reflected in high extract yields and the retained hard coal geochemical features such as the Pr/Ph value closest to the raw coal value.
PMMA Pyrolysis Simulation -- from Micro- to Real-Scale

Abstract:In fire spread simulations, heat transfer and pyrolysis are processes to describe the thermal degradation of solid material. In general, the necessary material parameters cannot be directly measured. They are implicitly deduced from micro- and bench-scale experiments, i.e. thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), micro-combustion (MCC) and cone calorimetry. Using a complex fire model, an inverse modelling process (IMP) is capable to find parameter sets, which are able to reproduce the experimental results. In the real-scale, however, difficulties arise predicting the fire behaviour using the deduced parameter sets. Here, we show an improved model to fit data of multiple small scale experiment types. Primarily, a gas mixture is used to model an average heat of combustion for the surrogate fuel. The pyrolysis scheme is using multiple reactions to match the mass loss (TGA), as well as the energy release (MCC). Additionally, a radiative heat flux map, based on higher resolution simulations, is used in the cone calorimeter setup. With this method, polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) micro-scale data can be reproduced well. For the bench-scale, IMP setups are used differing in cell size and targets, which all lead to similar and good results. Yet, they show significantly different performance in the real-scale parallel panel setup.

Abstract:Insulation materials are widely used in buildings for energy conservation. However, a combustible insulation material poses a potential risk of rapid flame propagation in the event of a fire. Since ignition occurs through surface pyrolysis before combustion takes place, it is important to understand the pyrolysis process of insulation materials. In this study, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted at different heating rates to investigate the pyrolysis of expanded polystyrene (EPS). The results indicate that the pyrolysis of EPS occurs in one stage, with weight loss occurring at temperatures in the range of 370–430 °C. The pyrolysis kinetics were analyzed using the model-free and model-free method based on TGA results. Kinetic analysis allowed for the determination of pyrolysis parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor, and reaction mechanism of EPS. Furthermore, the suitability of the pyrolysis parameters obtained in this study was examined using a pyrolysis model for fire simulation.
Gas–Particle Distribution of PAHs in Wood Combustion Emission Determined with Annular Denuders, Filter, and Polyurethane Foam Adsorbent

Abstract:Equipment consisting of annular denuders, a filter, and a polyurethane foam adsorbent was used for sampling 15 PAHs from the diluted emission from a heat-storing masonry heater. The denuder method was compared to the ISO 11338 method which was used for the sampling from hot and undiluted exhaust gas. The denuder method used with the exhaust dilution gave a realistic gas–particle distribution of PAHs in more atmospheric-like conditions compared to the sampling from undiluted exhaust gas where PAHs were almost totally in the gas phase. The results gained with the denuder method from the diluted exhaust are more relevant, e.g., from exposure and atmospheric processes point of view. The emissions from smoldering combustion conditions (SC) were compared with the emissions from normal combustion conditions (NC). The emission of each PAH was 7 to 14 times higher from SC than from NC, and the gas–particle distribution was shifted towards the particle phase due to increased condensation of PAHs. The PAHs could be divided into three groups based on their phase distributions. In the first group, PAHs existed mostly in the gas phase in both combustion cases; the vapor pressures of PAHs were lower than the saturation vapor pressures. In the second group, the gas phase was saturated and the concentration was almost the same in both combustion cases, whereas the particle phase concentration was higher in SC. In the third group, PAHs were mostly in the particle phase where the concentration was higher in SC.

Abstract:The pyrolysis by‐products of five common wood‐based construction materials (low‐density wood fiberboard, oriented strand board, pine, particle board, and plywood) were studied using pyrolysis‐gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Samples of wood‐based materials were pyrolyzed under helium from 300 to 800°C to further understand the production of compounds that may become airborne and available for respiratory and dermal exposure. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p‐xylene, styrene, and naphthalene were specifically targeted since these compounds are common by‐products of pyrolysis. These compounds have been measured in previous live fire scenarios and are associated with human health concerns. The generated pyrolysates were separated and identified with a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry instrument. The results from total ion chromatograms and selected ion monitoring chromatograms were analyzed to compare the abundance of chemicals of interest generated during pyrolysis. Oriented strand board and plywood generated the greatest total concentration of the targeted volatile organic compounds. Plywood and particle boards generated the largest variety in results. Samples from solid pine boards generated the smallest number of volatile compounds, followed by low‐density wood fiberboard that is manufactured with wood fibers, starch, and wax. Notably, pyrolysis by‐products are not the sole compounds generated during the combustion of biomass and these products evolve when they are exposed to the conditions of combustion. Our future work plans to study the combustion by‐products of these materials.

Abstract:In pulverized oxy-fuel biomass combustion, intricate interaction of complex fluid-mechanical, particle-dynamical, and chemical processes manifests even at intermediate scales. This study performs a comprehensive analysis aimed to understand the processes of flame stabilization, pollutant formation, and combustion behavior of biomass particles, while evaluating the impact of varying oxygen concentration on combustion. The investigation is conducted with a comprehensive data set, encompassing various oxy-fuel operation conditions ranging from 27vol.% to 36vol.% in O2 concentration, along a comparable air flame. These conditions are realized in an optically accessible gas-assisted solid fuel combustor designed to generate flames up to 70kWth . Advanced laser-optical diagnostics are employed to capture the combustion process . These techniques include the use of two-phase PIV/PTV for simultaneous measurements of flow and particle velocities, the application of tomographic absorption spectroscopy to elucidate three-dimensional gas temperature distributions , and the establishment of a quasi-simultaneous LII and LIF experimental setup to capture both PAH and soot occurrences. Additionally, chemiluminescence imaging of CH∗ is incorporated. The analysis extends to both single-phase and two-phase combustion, revealing a pronounced influence of oxygen concentration on both regimes. The inner recirculation zone , characteristic of a swirl flame, decreases with increasing oxygen content, coupled with an acceleration of the main flow downwards due to heightened heat release proximate to the nozzle. In two-phase combustion, a significant combustion delay is observed compared to single-phase combustion. Furthermore, the occurrences of PAHs and soot are clearly separated, and a pronounced influence of local gas composition on soot formation is evident. Comparative examination between oxy-fuel and air combustion show that an oxy-fuel condition with an oxygen concentration just below 33vol.% closely mirrors the flame characteristics of air combustion.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on polystyrene (PS) during co-pyrolysis with biomass through thermal decomposition. The model-free iso-conversional methods (Kissinger, Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, Starink and Vyazovkin) were adopted to calculate activation energy of the pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis process of two biomass samples (walnut shell: WS and peach stones: PST) with PS. It is found that biomass blending to PS decreased activation energy values and resulted in multi-step reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, changes in the evolution profiles of methyl, water, methoxy, carbon dioxide, benzene and styrene was monitored through evolved gas analysis via TGA/FT-IR and TGA/MS. Detection of temperature dependent release of volatiles indicated the differences occur as a result of compositional differences of biomass.
