Abstract:Due to the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields and phase matching of electro magnetic waves on interface being the basis to drive the Snell's laws and Fresnel's laws, they are also crucial for the analysis of electromagnetic wave propagation in a moving medium. There are mainly two methods to derive the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields on moving interface. One of them is to use the kinematic integral form, yet this method is based on the classical time-space, and the other is based on the relativistic transformation, the boundary conditions are derived from the scaling effect with geometric method, or from the principle of relativity directly. However, the first one has a form the same as the form obtained by using the kinematic integral form, while the second one obtains a different form. At the same time, the phase matching of electromagnetic wave on moving interface is only discussed by Galileo transformation, however this is unreasonable, because of the relativistic effect cannot be ignored here. Therefore, it is necessary to reexamine the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields and phase matching of electromagnetic wave on moving interface. Herein, firstly, the relativistic transformation formula of the unit normal vector of moving surface is derived from the surface equation and principle of relativity. Secondly, the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields on moving interface are given based on the relativistic transformation formula and the non-relativistic transformation formula of the unit normal vector and electromagnetic fields, which show that the boundary conditions of electromagnetic fields on moving interface under the relativistic case and the non-relativistic case have the same form. This is not accidental but definite, because the change of flux of electromagnetic fields, like the change of magnetic flux, from the induction of electromagnetic filed is the same as that from the variation of surface element. Thirdly, the phase matching of electromagnetic wave on moving interface is given based on the relativistic transformation formula of the unit normal vector and the phase matching of electromagnetic wave on resting interface. In the problem of light incident on a homogeneous medium moving at a constant velocity in vacuum or air, using the phase matching of electromagnetic wave on moving interface, the same results can be easily obtained through other methods. The discussion in this study belongs to classical electrodynamics with no quantum effects considered, but the results will provide some conveniences for theoretically analyzing electromagnetic communication, remote sensing and telemetering.

Abstract:In this paper the interface between two transformation media or between a transformation medium and vacuum is studied. Strictly from the transformation optics point of view the consequences of the boundary conditions at such interfaces are addressed in two different ways. First, we analyze a restricted class of reflectionless interfaces, for which the tools of transformation optics allow to describe the electromagnetic fields on both sides of the interface by means of the same vacuum solution of the Maxwell equations. In a second step, we examine interfaces between two arbitrary transformation media. This analysis is extended to the recently suggested generalization of transformation optics by the author. As a basic application it is shown how the standard law of reflection and refraction at an interface between vacuum and a homogeneous and isotropic medium with arbitrary and independent permittivity and permeability can be understood in a completely geometric way by the use of generalized transformation optics.

Boundary scattering effects on magnetotransport of narrow metallic wires and films

Abstract:Electron transport in thin metallic wires and films is strongly influenced by the quality of their surface. Weak localization and magnetoconductivity are also sensitive to the electron scattering at the edges of the sample. We study weak localization effects in a two-dimensional electron gas patterned in the form of a narrow quasi-one-dimensional channel in transverse magnetic field. The most general boundary conditions interpolating between the limits of mirror and diffuse edge scattering are assumed. We calculate magnetoconductivity for an arbitrary width of the sample including the cases of diffusive and ballistic lateral transport as well as the crossover between them. We find that in a broad range of parameters, the electron mobility is limited by the boundary roughness while the magnetotransport is only weakly influenced by the quality of the edges. In addition, we calculate magnetoconductivity for a metallic cylinder in the transverse field and a quasi-two-dimensional metallic film in the parallel field.

Abstract:A parameter study of electromagnetic wave propagating through the air-chiroferrite interface and through a chiroferrite slab is presented, and such bianisotropic medium can be made from chiral and gyrotropic ferrite materials artifically. The partial differential equations of the fourth order defining the field components E(y) and H(y) in chiroferrite are derived. The influence of different constitutive parameters on the transmission coefficients and refraction angles of transmitted fields are demonstrated. The results show that chirality causes strong effect of energy conversion between mode 1 and 2.

Abstract:Wave reflection and refraction at the interface between a normal media and a one-dimensional left-handed material (1 DLHM) with a hyperbolic dispersion relationship is studied. It is found that in a special case that the boundary is perpendicular to one asymptotic line of the hyperbola, phase matching cannot be achieved unless the 1 DLHM is regarded to be intrinsically lossy. After introducing a small loss factor to the 1 DLHM, a reasonable solution for the phase matching is obtained. According to the analytical result, a wave confined to a thin layer near the boundary is found, which can be excited at the interface as a reflected wave or a refracted wave attenuating drastically away from the boundary inside the 1 DLHM in both cases.

Abstract:Considering the complexity of solution for the problem of electromagnetic shielding by using precise boundary conditions, in order to simplify analysis and calculation of the problem on the basis of averaged boundary conditions, a new method of solution for the problem was presented on a moving large conducting plate. Compared with the solution obtained by using precise boundary conditions, the method is very simple and convenient, and in the applied limits of averaged boundary conditions, the distribution of electromagnetic fields in the free space outside the plate can be calculated with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:Electromagnetic boundaries, defined by the most general linear and local conditions, are considered in this paper. The conditions relate the normal components of the D and B vectors to the tangential components of the E and H vectors at each point of the boundary. Reflection of a plane wave from a planar boundary in an isotropic half-space is analyzed, and an analytic expression for the reflection dyadic is derived. It is shown that any plane wave can be decomposed in two components, which do not interact in reflection. Properties of plane waves matched to the general boundary are given. Certain special cases, arising naturally from the general theory and labeled as E-boundary, H-boundary, and EH-boundary conditions, are introduced as interesting novelties, and some of their properties are studied. Other special cases with known results are considered in verifying the theory. A possible realization of the general boundary in terms of an interface of a bianisotropic medium is discussed in the Appendix.

Complex-angle analysis of electromagnetic waves on interfaces

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave is reflected and refracted at interfaces, satisfying Fresnel-Snell law which is required by conservations of energy and momentum. If the incident angle is lower than the critical angle, we can use this Fresnel-Snell law, but the Fresnel-Snell law is modified in the case of existence of dissipation ($\tilde{n} = n + i\kappa, \kappa > 0$) or in the condition of total internal reflection. In the cases, we have to extend the angle of refraction from real number to complex number ($\theta \rightarrow \tilde{\theta} = \theta + i\psi, \psi \neq 0$). In this paper, by using complex-angle approach, we analyse the behaviour of electromagnetic waves in various kind of interfaces: dielectric - dielectric system, dissipative dielectric - dielectric system, and metal - dielectric system. We show that iso-frequency curves in wavenumber space is opened in the case where $n, \kappa > 0$, and closed either when $n \rightarrow 0$ or when $\kappa \rightarrow 0$ ("Lifshitz transition" of electromagnetic waves). Excess momentum (wavenumber) and anomalous spin (circular polarization) emerging with the transition are also discussed.

Unique interface reflection phenomena tailored by nanoscale electromagnetic boundary conditions

Abstract:Local interface response effects are neglected based on the traditional electromagnetic boundary conditions (EMBCs) in an abrupt interface model. In this study, generalized nanoscale EMBCs are derived with interface response functions (IRFs) representing field inhomogeneity across the interface based on integral Maxwell's equations. They are rewritten in two different forms that correspond to the equivalent abrupt interface models with interface-induced dipoles or charges and currents. Interesting behaviors of Brewster angle shifting, non-extinction at Brewster angle, and unique absorption or gain effects are revealed based on the advanced Fresnel formula. IRFs-controlled GH-shift and angular GH-shift of a Gaussian beam near the Brewster angles are generated by the gradient interface. These unique phenomena provide some guidance for measuring the IRFs and expanding interface photonics at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Generalized formulas of reflection and refraction are derived by simultaneously considering real valued boundary conditions and Poynting׳s theorem. It is proposed that the dynamic mechanics of reflection and refraction may be attributed to the minimization of the interface energy. In addition, it is predicted that non-synchronized variation among electric and magnetic parameters at the lossy interface may readjust distribution of energy flows between the reflected and transmitted waves, produce additional peak(s) in the curves for time averaged Poynting vector of the transmitted wave versus refracted angle, induce negative refraction of either TM or TE polarized wave without negative refraction index, and so on.

Abstract:Characteristics of surface modes at the interface between an isotropic medium and an indefinite medium that has a dispersion relation of hyperbolic form are studied. Four cases for the isotropic medium, including normal, left-handed, magnetic (with negative permeability), and metallic media, are considered. The conditions for the existence of surface modes in each case are analyzed in detail, and the results are expressed explicitly, indicating that the existence of surface modes is determined by the nature of the indefinite medium as well as the orientation of the boundary surface of this anisotropic medium. The energy flows associated with the surface modes are also discussed.

Abstract:We rigorously prove that when a bounded light beam is incident on an interface, a part of its plane wave components propagate according to the reverse mode of the ordinary reflection and transmission. Based on the two propagation modes, we propose the definition of the generalized reflection and transmission. With this definition, we solve the controversy about the Goos-Hanchen shift approaching the grazing incidence limit, and release the angular expansion method from the precondition which requires that the beam spread angle should not exceed the complement of the incident angle. Then the spectrum superposition effect is investigated for the incidence circumstance whose beam spread angle exceeds the complement of the incident angle.
Exact boundary-value solution for an electromagnetic wave propagating in a linearly-varying index of refraction

Abstract:The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a linearly-varying index of refraction is a fundamental problem in wave physics, being relevant in fusion science for describing certain wave-based heating and diagnostic schemes. Here, an exact solution is obtained for a given incoming wavefield specified on the boundary transverse to the direction of inhomogeneity by performing a spectral, rather than asymptotic, matching. Two case studies are then presented: a Gaussian beam at oblique incidence and a speckled wavefield at normal incidence. For the Gaussian beam, it is shown that when the waist $W$ is sufficiently large, oblique incidence manifests simply as rigid translation and focal shift of the corresponding diffraction pattern at normal incidence. The destruction of the hyperbolic umbilic caustic (corresponding to a critically focused beam) as $W$ is reduced is then demonstrated. The caustic disappears once $W \lesssim \delta_a \sqrt{L}$ ($L$ being the medium lengthscale normalized by the Airy skin depth $\delta_a$), at which point the wave behavior is increasingly described by Airy functions, but experiences less focusing as a result. To maximize the intensity of a launched Gaussian beam at a turning point, one should therefore minimize the imaginary part of the launched complex beam parameter while having the real part satisfy critical focusing. For the speckled wavefield, it is shown that the transverse speckle pattern only couples to the Airy longitudinal pattern when the coupling parameter $\eta = \sqrt{L}/f_\#$ is large, with $f_\#$ being the f-number of the launching aperture. When $\eta \ll 1$, a reduced description of the total wavefield can be obtained by simply multiplying the incoming speckle pattern with the Airy swelling.

Anomalous Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in Anisotropic Media with a Unique Dispersion Relation

Abstract:We investigate the reflection and refraction behaviors of electromagnetic waves at the interface between an isotropic material and the anisotropic medium with a unique dispersion relation. We show that the refraction angle of whether phase or energy flow for $E$-polarized waves is opposite to that for $H$-polarized waves, though the dispersion relations for $E$- and $H$-polarized waves are the same in such anisotropic media. For a certain polarized wave the refraction behaviors of wave vector and energy flow are also significantly different. It is found that waves exhibit different propagation behaviors in anisotropic media with different sign combinations of the permittivity and permeability tensors. Some interesting properties of propagation are also found in the special anisotropic media, such as amphoteric refraction, oblique total transmission for both $E$- and $H$-polarized waves, and the inversion of critical angle. The special anisotropic media can be realized by metamaterials and lead to potential applications, such as to fabricate polarization splitters with higher efficiencies than conventional counterparts.

Abstract:In the present paper it is shown that a set of universal boundary relations which give the discontinuities of the electromagnetic field across any regular surface can be written via the distribution concept. All specific boundary conditions are then derived from these universal relations as particular cases. It is also shown that any set of linear relations written on a regular surface can not always be the boundary relations of an electromagnetic field. In the case of monochromatic fields the necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of linear equations to be the boundary conditions are given in three theorems. These theorems are applied to the discussion of the validity of boundary conditions of impedance type and show that such conditions can only be valid at certain critical frequencies.

Abstract:The scattered field is studied that results when a plane wave is normally incident on a perfectly conducting flat plate in motion. The exact solution is analyzed for both periodic and aperiodic motion. The quasi-stationary approximation is compared with the exact solution, and the error is found to be on the order of\beta = \upsilon_{M}c^{-1}where\upsilon_{M}is the maximum speed of the moving boundary andcis the speed of light. This error estimate includes a factor which increases as the distance from the plate increases. A uniform quasi-stationary approximation is developed which has an error on the order of\betaindependent of the space variable. By taking into account the Doppler shift, it is possible to construct a uniform approximation to the exact solution on the order ofa_{M}c^{-2}wherea_{M}is the maximum acceleration of the boundary.

Representation Independent Boundary Conditions for a Piecewise-Homogeneous Linear Magneto-dielectric Medium

Abstract:At a boundary between two transparent, linear, isotropic, homogeneous materials, derivations of the electromagnetic boundary conditions and the Fresnel relations typically proceed from the Minkowski {E,B,D,H} representation of the macroscopic Maxwell equations. However, equations of motion for macroscopic fields in a transparent linear medium can be written using Ampere {E,B}, Chu {E,H}, Lorentz, Minkowski, Peierls, Einstein-Laub, and other formulations of continuum electrodynamics. We present a representation-independent derivation of electromagnetic boundary conditions and Fresnel relations for the propagation of monochromatic radiation through a piecewise-homogeneous, transparent, linear, magneto-dielectric medium. The electromagnetic boundary conditions and the Fresnel relations are derived from energy conservation coupled with the application of Stokes's theorem to the wave equation. Our representation-independent formalism guarantees the general applicability of the Fresnel relations. Specifically, the new derivation is necessary so that a valid derivation of the Fresnel equations exists for alternative, non-Minkowski formulations of the macroscopic Maxwell field equations.

Abstract:This paper proposes an original and thorough analysis of the behavior of electromagnetic waves in the presence of moving bodies by using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Movements are implemented by changing positions of the objects at each time step, through the classical FDTD time loop. This technique is suitable for non-relativistic speeds, thus for most encountered problems in antennas and propagation domain. The numerical aspects that need to be considered are studied. Then, different bodies in motion are examined: plane wave source with matching resistors, observation point, inclined partially reflecting surface (PRS), line source, and metallic cylinder illuminated by a plane wave. The results are compared with those of special relativity which are considered as the references. Some aspects of special relativity are present in the direct FDTD approach, such as the independence of the velocity of electromagnetic wave propagation with the speed of the source and Lorentz local time (with a different physical interpretation). It is shown that the amplitude of the electric field for a moving plane wave source does not increase with the speed of motion, if the impedance of the source is small. Moreover, for a moving scattering metallic wire, one can observe a phenomenon similar to shock waves.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of total transmission at the interface separating an isotropic regular material and an indefinite medium [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 077405 (2003)] in which not all of the principal elements of the permeability and permittivity tensors have the same sign, for TE- and TM-polarized electromagnetic waves. We make a detailed investigation on the existence conditions of total transmission and the corresponding Brewster's angles when an electromagnetic wave is incident on the interface from an isotropic regular material. We show that the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves at such interfaces are quite different from those at regular interfaces. For both TE and TM waves, total transmission is possible at the interfaces containing an indefinite medium; in particular, normally incident total transmission and omnidirectional total transmission are also allowed, provided that suitable physical parameters for the two materials across the interface are chosen. Abstract:Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations have been invented for fluid dynamics and electromagnetic systems, respectively, for centuries. The development of Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations for homogeneous materials seems to be mature. However, when there is a phase interface, a coupling theory for the mass transport with the propagation of electromagnetic fields remains an open question. In the current work, we present a fundamental theory for the thermodynamics and the kinetics for mass transport and electromagnetic wave propagation in non-uniform system when an interface is present. We will demonstrate that Maxwell-Ampere equation, Lorenz force, and Gauss' law for magnetic field all have to be modified at the phase interface. We expect that the modified Lorenz force and Maxwell equations will shed light on high-temperature superconductivity, where the coupling of mass effect, such as thermal noise, with electromagnetic fields is necessary.
