Abstract:This article surveys the available English translations of contemporary Chinese literature from the People's Republic. In view of the post-Mao Party policy of relative freedom for creative writing, more works are pouring out of China than ever before. Of the most recent translations, the largest share belongs to Panda Books, a publishing subunit of the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing. Under the leadership of the Yangs (Xianyi and Gladys), a husband-and-wife team of great renown, this new Panda series has published more than a dozen titles as of 1984, and new ones continue to be received. Despite its voluminous production, the editors of the Panda series have made certain choices that are of dubious value. Especially weak is the representation of traditional literary works, which are often drastically abridged or collected in slender anthologies. In comparison, coverage of modern and contemporary works is more exciting. The translations are generally correct, the most felicitous from the hands of Gladys Yang. However, the translations suffer from a certain uniformity of style and sometimes from severe cuts. Volumes in the series are nevertheless a useful addition to the increasing library of English translations of contemporary Chinese literature, now more than adequate for an undergraduate course.

Abstract:In the Chinese history of translation, the era of the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty is considered one of the four great periods of history during which translation activities abounded. This period witnessed in particular the arrival of large numbers of Jesuits and the emergence of quantities of scientific and technological translations covering a wide field of disciplines, thus distinguishing it from the other three periods. These translations resulted from the combination of several factors including economic, socio-cultural, psychological, and linguistic factors, and have in turn deeply influenced modern Chinese society. Given the importance of the translation activities of this period to the whole of Chinese history, this paper attempts to reflect on these activities and to give a brief presentation of them in order to identify their specificities, the superficial and underlying reasons for this translation boom, and their influence on modern Chinese society.

Abstract:This paper reviews The Way of Translation: Theory and Practice (Revised Edition) by Cao Minglun in terms of its contents, features and academic innovations. This book reviews the history of the“Cultural turn in translation”, clarifies the definition of translation and the scope of translation studies, and reflects on the disconnection between translation practice and theory in China from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. It provides enlightenment for the translator to realize the benign interaction between translation practice and translation theory and is beneficial to the development of translation studies.

Abstract:Song Dan is the first scholar to discover Lin Yutang’ s unpublished English translation of The Red Chamber Dream stored in Japan. Based on the discovery and research of Lin’s translation, Song Dan authors the book Collation and Research of Lin Yutang’s Unpublished English Translation of THE RED CHAMBER DREAM Stored in Japan, which accurately solves the three problems of Lin’s choice of source text, translation time, and why it was translated and published in Japan. Through the integration of materials and methods, the book, with its detailed analysis, addresses well the basic questions of Lin’s translation strategies, characteristics, and significance. It also makes a useful exploration on the methodologies of multilingual or cross-cultural translation research. Moreover, the meticulous collation is helpful to understand Lin’s translation more directly and vividly. This book provides new literature for both the translation study of The Red Chamber Dream and the study of Lin Yutang. It not only presents a new paradigm for the study of translators’ manuscripts, but also can arouse the circle of Redology to rethink the sequel problem and Lin’s study of The Red Chamber Dream. The author’s perseverance and diligence in research are commendable, and her innovative way to integrate materials and methods is also enlightening for the current translation studies.
The Reception of Giles’ and Minford’s English Translation of Liaozhai Zhiyi: A Sentiment Analysis Perspective

Abstract:The overseas reception of the Chinese literary classic Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio) is largely related to readers’ attitudes toward different translations of the classic. The evaluation of readers’ attitudes toward the English translations can help researchers probe the reception of the novel in the English world. Based on Python, sentiment analysis is applied into the study of readers’ reviews from Amazon and Goodreads on two most-read English translations: Herbert Giles’ and John Minford’s translations. This article finds that Liaozhai Zhiyi is well received in the English world due to three main factors. First, the book, composed of diverse short stories, caters to different readers’ preferences. Second, the Chinese elements in the stories meet the needs of readers’ curiosity about Chinese culture and customs. Lastly, Minford’s well-crafted translation and comprehensive peritexts facilitate the acceptance of the book. This article argues that Giles’ relatively rigid translation, outdated peritexts, and clumsy formatting may hinder its acceptance.

Abstract:A la recherche du temps perdu, written by a famous French writer Marcel Proust, is regarded as one of the classic works in the literary history. During more than a decade of introduction in China, this work has received close attention, especially for the translation of its title. However, no consensus has been reached. By reviewing how this novel has been translated, the present paper revolves mainly around arguments and controversial ideas about the Chinese translation of its title. Various factors leading to this divergence are also discussed, such as comprehension of the theme of the novel, method of re-expression, translators’ aspiration, and readers’ expectation, etc, which broaden the space of understanding the writer and his work.

Abstract:Chinese online literature has attracted wide overseas attention over the past decade. As a newly emerging form of literature in the twenty-first century, the ‘digitalness’ of this literary form enables its translators to overcome the cultural gap and introduce this subculture to the rest of the world. The translation of Chinese online literature plays a significant role in its worldwide dissemination, greatly facilitates the promotion of Chinese culture and also sheds new light on multimedia translation studies. This article will focus attention on the translation of Chinese online literature in the anglophone world, aiming to map out a detailed overview of its overseas journey, namely how it made its way to the anglophone audience, to elaborate on the role of translation in this process, and how the translation of Chinese online literature facilitates the reception of the novels and contributes to their popularity outside China. Finally, this article argues that the human translation of online literature, tailored to this digital form, could bring insights into the promotion of Chinese culture and also into studies on multimedia translation.

Abstract:In the age of globalization, intellectuals, writers, critics and literary and cultural studies scholars cannot but take pains to conceive or picture the future orientation of elite literature since elite literature is being challenged by popular literature and culture, and literary studies by Cultural Studies. The present essay tries to describe a new orientation of Chinese literature studies, or more specifically, to observe modern Chinese literature in a broad context of world literature and reach a rewriting of contemporary Chinese literary culture from an international and comparative point of view. In reperiodizing modern Chinese literature, the author points out that in the global age, the new framework of world culture in the twenty-first century is characterized by different cultures coming to dialogue and merging to some degree rather than ‘cultural conflict’. With this broad background, twentieth century Chinese literature should be re-examined from an international and comparative perspective. The paper also points out that rewriting literary history must be associated with issues of canon formation and reformation, that is, to offer new interpretations from theoretical perspectives of canonical literary works. The author discusses several considerations involved in canon selection: reception and market success, recognition of critical circles, and inclusion in university curriculum.

Through the induction and reorganization of a large number of related literature at home and abroad, this paper analyzes the current situation of English translation of Chinese cultural classics, and combines the latest research results in the field of translation at home and abroad to propose the development trend of English translation of Chinese cultural classics, including five aspects: artificial intelligence translation in combination with human translation, continue to enrich and improve the "Greater China Library", build the Chinese-English corpus for Chinese cultural classics, translate Chinese cultural classics based on ethics, and cooperate extensively with domestic and foreign translation communities.

Abstract:Abstract Arranged chronologically, this article presents a general picture of Chaucer reception and translation in China, and examines the development of criticism and the interaction of readers with both the original texts and their Chinese translations. By using indicators like university curricula, editions of translations and reprints, critical analyses, adaptations, and popularizations, this study shows that there have been increasing readership in medieval literature and rising admiration for the poet throughout the reception history, with occasional sharp changes. This reception pattern is determined by a combination of factors such as the intrinsic qualities of the texts, readers' concern over contemporary social issues and their own literary past, and the political and intellectual context of the nation as a whole, as well as of interaction with the outside world.

Abstract:Literary translation must meet readers’ aesthetic needs and acceptance psychology for literary works. At the same time, the quality of translation should not only be judged by the source text, but also by the acceptance of readers. Reception aesthetics is a theoretical system that takes readers as the center to study the effect of text acceptance. This paper selects Red Sorghum translated by Howard Goldblatt as the research object, collects readers’ comments on this translation from foreign book review websites (www.goodreads.com), and uses the theory of reception aesthetics to analyze the acceptance of this translation among English readers, aiming to provide more ideas for the translation of Chinese literary works.

Abstract:During the past decade, studies on translanguaging have made increasing exploration in terms of theoretical expansion, educational practice and social interaction, which are significant to trans-disciplinary linguistic research. This paper selects a total of 439 pieces of journal articles published between 2010 to September 2021（10 in Chinese, 429 in English）, which involve research on the theoretical development and empirical studies in different contexts. This paper focuses on the two categories of translanguaging, which are theoretical translanguaging and pedagogical translanguaging respectively, further makes a deep exploration in the paths of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, and therefore provides reflections and prospects on translanguaging research and multilingual education in accordance with Chinese context.
