Abstract:Jane Austen's novels convey an idea of everyday existence centered on the experiences of marriage and family life. It is frequently remarked that more than almost any other novelist, Jane Austen can be read and reread with increasing delight. This quality comes from the sentence-to-sentence brilliance of the novels, which speaks of the moment-to-moment brilliance, the transitory meaning, of everyday life she describes.A cardinal attribute of the novel genre is the acknowledgement of ordinary life. Except in the novel, and occasionally in satire and comic drama, the conventional everyday life of unexceptional persons is not represented in literature. In this fidelity to everyday, less than heroic existence, the novel as genre has always had a special relationship to women's history. From its inception, women have made up the major audience and often the major subject of the novel. Austen drew on Richardson in her delineation of a feminine consciousness.What is a feminine consciousness? Recent studies of minority history have shown that even the most oppressed class is not utterly dehumanized by the experience of oppression, but develops its own traditions, values, and compensations. The compensations are familiar to any reader who has noticed the role of the servant in the English novel, but the values and strengths, or the active consciousness, of a politically suppressed group are somewhat more elusive.The existence of a feminine consciousness is suggested in Jane Austen's first five novels: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Although her women characters lead restricted lives, her novels are not about restriction, not even about expression, but about the relationship between the two, about how women find ways to develop and assert their womanhood despite the restrictions placed on them. Though there are women in the novels who fail to do so - who, like Charlotte Lucas, settle for demoralizing compensations - the heroine always succeeds. The world in which we find her at the close of the novel is as much molded by her as she has been molded by the world.In the educated class of Austen's society, the influence of women was especially powerful. Because their oppression did not extend to the experiences of poverty and illiteracy, educated women were more equipped to counter their political unimportance. They were also members of a class that had reached a point never reached before in the cultivation of arts and letters. Many great and small houses of the gentry made art, science and polite letters as central to rural society as sport, agriculture and politics. And for the first time among gentlemen a regularized standard of manner and speech was observed. According to G. M. Trevelyan, "The country houses and the world of fashion did more for culture and intellect at that time than the dormant universities."1 As eighteenth century fiction testifies women were as actively present in this society as men. And Austen seemed to be aware that women in her own class received better treatment than in any below it. When Fanny Price returns to visit her poor and striving lowermiddle-class relations, her family hardly notices her. All attention and praise go to her brother, whose career in the navy is the focus of the family's hopes.It is not surprising, then, that the class and atmosphere of the gentry produced the first major woman author in England, a novelist who undertook not only to reveal the influence and importance of women in her class, but to articulate the unspoken-for values of her sex. 'Men have every advantage of us in telling their own story;' says Anne Eliott. T will not allow books to prove anything.' Jane Austen herself knew that novels do not endeavor to prove the little claims and opinions of mankind, but that they do testify to something larger, the energies of culture and spirit. The feminine consciousness may be seen as one such unacknowledged energy. …
