Abstract:Will Ladislaw in Middlemarch has been regarded by most critics and readers as a vague and insubstantial character.They have focused on the imitative function of this character and believe that Ladislaw is a failure in characterization.However,a closer study of the novel will enlighten us to the insight that Ladislaw is a character more spiritual than material.By foregrounding the thematic and synthetic functions of the character,George Eliot presented Ladislaw as the hero of the novel,relating him to a key image that leads to a better understanding of the heroine,Dorothea.
