Abstract:Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely investigated as light emitting materials in bio-imaging and sensing, solid state lighting and display, anti-fake tags and light conversion films, due to their characterized photophysical properties including large Stokes shift, long lifetime, and sharp emission spectrum, arising from the sensitized f - f transitions. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in luminescent lanthanide complexes and their applications from 2015 to August 2017 concerning of general concepts to potential applications. We first introduce the basic concept of sensitized luminescence of lanthanide complexes and the strategies used for highly luminescent complexes. Then recent varieties of luminescent lanthanide complexes and their hybrid materials are presented. Finally, applications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:This review briefly introduces the luminescent and magnetic properties of lanthanide complexes, highlights the approaches of lanthanide complexes for enhancing NIR‐II luminescent emission, maximizing luminescence lifetime, and improving MR signals, summarizes some representative biological applications of lanthanide complex in bioimaging and biosensing, and proposes the potential directions for lanthanide complexes as next‐generation imaging and therapeutic agents. The lanthanide complex, characterized by narrow emission bands, large Stokes shifts, long luminescence lifetime, robust resistance to photobleaching, and magnetic properties, affords significant promise for molecular imaging and biosensing applications. While most lanthanide complexes emitting visible light are extensively studied for cellular‐level detection and bioimaging, near‐infrared‐emitted (700–1700 nm) lanthanide compounds exhibit more favorable properties for bioimaging and biosensing, ascribed from deeper penetration and reduced bleaching effects. Besides, the magnetic lanthanide complex with higher magnetic resonance signals can enhance image resolution and sensitivity, offering more precise bioimaging analysis. However, the widespread use of high‐efficiency luminescence lanthanide complexes is currently impeded by the lack of design approaches for improving magnetic properties and sensitization chromophores with extended excitation and emission wavelengths. In this review, some fundamental theories and design strategies of lanthanide complexes are summarized for luminescence imaging, lifetime‐engineered imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and dual‐modal imaging, and now highlight a selection of bioimaging and biosensing applications. The review addresses the existing gap in the literature by proposing some feasible approaches for improving the fluorescent and magnetic properties. Concurrently, future challenges and opportunities in the field of lanthanide complex probes are discussed.

From antenna to assay: lessons learned in lanthanide luminescence

Abstract:Ligand-sensitized, luminescent lanthanide(III) complexes are of considerable importance because their unique photophysical properties (microsecond to millisecond lifetimes, characteristic and narrow emission bands, and large Stokes shifts) make them well suited as labels in fluorescence-based bioassays. The long-lived emission of lanthanide(III) cations can be temporally resolved from scattered light and background fluorescence to vastly enhance measurement sensitivity. One challenge in this field is the design of sensitizing ligands that provide highly emissive complexes with sufficient stability and aqueous solubility for practical applications. In this Account, we give an overview of some of the general properties of the trivalent lanthanides and follow with a summary of advances made in our laboratory in the development of highly luminescent Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes for applications in biotechnology. A focus of our research has been the optimization of these compounds as potential commercial agents for use in homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) technology. Our approach involves developing high-stability octadentate Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes that rely on all-oxygen donor atoms and using multichromophore chelates to increase molar absorptivity; earlier examples utilized a single pendant chromophore (that is, a single "antenna"). Ligands based on 2-hydroxyisophthalamide (IAM) provide exceptionally emissive Tb(III) complexes with quantum yield values up to approximately 60% that are stable at the nanomolar concentrations required for commercial assays. Through synthetic modification of the IAM chromophore and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, we have developed a method to predict absorption and emission properties of these chromophores as a tool to guide ligand design. Additionally, we have investigated chiral IAM ligands that yield Tb(III) complexes possessing both high quantum yield values and strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity. To efficiently sensitize Eu(III) emission, we have used the 1-hydroxypyridin-2-one (1,2-HOPO) chelate to create remarkable ligands that combine excellent photophysical properties and exceptional aqueous stabilities. A more complete understanding of this chromophore has been achieved by combining low-temperature phosphorescence measurements with the same TD-DFT approach used with the IAM system. Eu(III) complexes with strong CPL activity have also been obtained with chiral 1,2-HOPO ligands. We have also undertaken kinetic analysis of radiative and nonradiative decay pathways for a series of Eu(III) complexes; the importance of the metal ion symmetry on the ensuing photophysical properties is clear. Lastly, we describe a Tb(III)-IAM compound--now carried through to commercial availability--that offers improved performance in the common HTRF platform and has the potential to vastly improve sensitivity.

Abstract:Luminescent molecule‐based bioimaging system is widely used for precise localization and distinction of cancer/tumor cells. Luminescent lanthanide (Ln(III)) complexes offer long‐lived (sub‐millisecond time scale) and sharp (FWHM <10nm) emission, arising from the forbidden 4f‐4f electronic transitions. Luminescent Ln(III) complex‐based bioimaging has emerged as a promising option for both in vitro and in vivo visualizations. In this mini‐review, the historical development and recent significant progress of luminescent Ln(III) probes for bioapplications are introduced. The recent studies are mainly focused on three points: (i) the structural modifications of Ln(III) complexes in both macrocyclic and small ligands, (ii) the acquirement of high resolution luminescence images of cancer/tumor cells and (iii) the constructions of ratiometric biosensors. Furthermore, our recent study is explained as a new cancer GPS (growth positioning system) for determining tumor grade through photophysical property analyses of intracellular Eu(III) complex.

Abstract:In this paper, recent advances in the synthesis, mechanism of sensitized emission, and luminescent properties of organic lanthanide complexes are reviewed. Stress is put on the progress in the development of organic europium complexes and their nanoparticles with excellent visible-light-sensitized and two-photon-sensitized EuIII luminescence properties. These are of increasing importance because bioanalysis or bioimaging techniques based on such labeled materials will combine the advantages of high sensitivity, high signal-to-noise ratio, deep penetration, and low photodamage to biological samples. In addition, the application of long-wavelength-sensitized luminescence of organic lanthanide complexes and their nanoparticles in bioimaging is discussed.

Abstract:This review details the progress made in our laboratory in Dublin within the area of supramolecular lanthanide chemistry; where the main objective has been to develop functional lanthanide luminescent systems that emit within the visible or the near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The application of the lanthanide-centred assembly is two-fold, firstly to use it for sensing application of biologically and environmentally relevant anions, and secondly to use the emission to report on the formation of lanthanide directed self-assembly processes. This review begins with the progress made from the use of lanthanide cyclen (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) complexes: to develop displacement assays for sensing or probing applications; for their incorporations onto gold nanoparticles where the lanthanide emission can be ‘switched on-off’ by external stimuli; and their application in the formation of mixed f–d metal ion based self-assemblies and sensors and imaging agents for DNA. The second part of this review focuses on the development of self-assemblies formed using 2,6-diamidopyridyl based ligands. A variety of ligands are presented that have been employed in the formation of chiral self-assembly bundles, dimetallic triple stranded helicates and Langmuir–Blodgett films that give rise to circularly polarised luminescence. The formation of such organised self-assembly monolayers of water–air interface brings us to the last topic of this review, along with the formation of novel soft-material such as gels, where the lanthanide emission is employed to report on the formation of three dimensional supramolecular structures, and their application as ‘nano-gardens’ in growing ionic structures with novel morphologies.

Abstract:The lanthanide-doped up-conversion (UC) nanocrystals exhibit unique luminescence properties, such as the conversion of near-infrared long wavelength excitation into short visible wavelength emission. These UC nanoparticles symbolize a new class of phosphor materials. Recently, lanthanide-doped UC nanocrystals have been developed as a biological class for various applications including bio-imaging, drug delivery, and sensing which require low auto-fluorescence background, large anti-Stokes shifts, sharp emission bandwidths, high resistance to photo-bleaching, high penetration depth tissue, and high temporal resolution. Furthermore, these UC nanocrystals show promising poten-tial for improving the selectivity and sensitivity compared with those in common traditional methods. This review focuses on the fundamental mechanism of UC optical processes, synthetic methods with focus on the different techniques used, energy transfer mecha-nisms of lanthanide-doped UC nanocrystals, and in particular recent developments in biological applications, such as bio-imaging, drug delivery, fluorescence resonance energy transfer sensing, and heavy metal ion detections.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln 3+ ) complexes with organic ligands have recently gained extensive attention due to their unique optical features such as high color purity, narrow and intense emission bands and long excited state lifetimes, showing diverse applications in tunable lasers, optical amplifiers, biomedical diagnosis, high density information storage and so on. However, some inherent shortcomings, such as poor stability (photo-, thermal- and mechanical), low processability and the tendency to aggregate significantly, limit their full exploitation in practical applications. Incorporating of Ln 3+ complexes into polymers matrices are effective means to improve their properties and broaden their applications. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers, varying from structural evolution of ligand molecules and polymers to application expansion of luminescent functional polymers. This review will systematically summarize the key points in the synthesis methods (including both physical doping and chemical cross-linking) of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers. The critical strategies to prepare self-healing luminescent polymers will be discussed in detail. We then review the emerging applications of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers ranging from light-conversion films, organic light-emitting diodes, bio-imaging to temperature sensing applications. At the end of this review, we will provide an outlook on the opportunities and challenges of Ln 3+ complexes-containing polymers.

Abstract:The 4f–4f emission of Tb(III), Eu(III), and Sm(III) complexes plays an important role in the design of monochromatic green, red, and deep-red luminescent materials for displays, lighting, and sensing devices. The 4f–4f emission of Yb(III), Nd(III), and Er(III) complexes is observed in the near-infrared (IR) region for bioimaging and security applications. However, their absorption coefficients are extremely small (ε < 10 L mol−1 cm−1). In this review, photosensitized luminescent lanthanide(III) complexes containing organic chromophores (ligands) with large absorption coefficients (ε > 10,000 L mol−1 cm−1) are introduced. Organic molecular design elements, including (1) the control of the excited triplet (T1) state, (2) the effects on the charge-transfer (CT) band, and (3) the energy transfer from metal ions for effective photosensitized luminescence, are explained. The characteristic electrosensitized luminescence (electroluminescence) and mechanoluminescence (triboluminescence) of lanthanide(III) complexes are also explained. Lanthanide(III) complexes with well-designed organic molecules are expected to open avenues of research among the fields of chemistry, physics, electronics, and material science.

Abstract:Lanthanides (Ln(III)) based compounds as light-emitting materials have emerged as successful agents in high-performance defense and lighting systems, magnets, bio-markers, and circuitry. Therefore, they have recently gained much attention as energy-saving and cost-effective luminescent materials and their applications in analyte detection. The present review summarizes powerful features and recent developments of organo-lanthanide complexes in lighting applications with a particular focus on visible light emitters, including Eu(III), Tb(III), Sm(III), and Dy(III) ions. In addition, this review discusses the most relevant aspects of photosensitization, such as the structure, property, functionalization of primary and secondary ligands, and molecular geometry. In addition, coordination sites of organo-lanthanide complexes and their applications collectively contribute to the improved performance of innovative luminescent materials. Finally, the current challenges and key recommendations for advancing organo-lanthanides in material science are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as particularly exciting multifunctional hybrid materials due to their inherent advantages of both organic linkers and inorganic metal ions, as well as the tailorability in terms of structure, dimension, size, and shape. As one special type of MOF materials, the lanthanide MOFs provide the bright promise to develop various types of luminescent applications due to their unique luminescence properties such as high luminescence quantum yield, long-lived emission, large Stokes shifts, and characteristically sharp line emissions. Up to now, lanthanide MOFs have been proven successful in many applications. In this chapter, we review the latest developments in lanthanide MOFs and their applications in sensing, light-emitting devices, and biomedicine. In addition, we highlight some strategies for effectively improving their luminescent function applications.

Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks(Ln-MOFs),which is composed of organic bridging ligands and Ln3+ions/clusters,is an important component of luminescent MOFs.Compared with transition metal ions,lanthanide ions have a higher coordination number and abundant coordination geometry.Moreover,Ln-MOFs have special characteristics such as good porosity,topological diversity,high surface area and highly adjustable structure.The energy transfer(ET)process in Ln-MOFs could be easily affected by the interac-tion between host framework and guest,resulting in the change of luminescence intensity or color.Over the past few decades,the features of Ln-MOFs open the door to a range of incredibly important applica-tions.However,there are few reviews on systemic summary of the various applications of Ln-MOFs.In this paper,we summarized the latest progress of Ln-MOFs applications,including the Ln-MOFs in chem-ical and biological sensors,optical information devices and catalysis,respectively,and discussed design mechanism.The possible problems in current research are briefly prospected,hoping to provide some helpful guidance for the future development of Ln-MOF materials.
Synthesis, Characterization and Luminescent Properties of Lanthanide Complexes with a Novel Multipodal Ligand.

Abstract:Solid complexes of lanthanide nitrates with an novel multipodal ligand, 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl-3,6-bis{N,N-bis[((2'-furfurylaminoformyl)phenoxyl)ethyl]-aminomethyl}-benzene (L) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and molar conductivity measurements. At the same time, the luminescent properties of the Sm(III), Eu(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III) nitrate complexes in solid state were investigated. Under the excitation of UV light, these complexes exhibited characteristic emission of central metal ions. The lowest triplet state energy level of the ligand indicates that the triplet state energy level (T1) of the ligand matches better the resonance level of Tb(III) than other lanthanide ions.

Abstract:At present, the application of rare-earth organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) in fluorescence sensing has entered rapid development and shown great potential in various analytical fields, such as environmental analysis, food analysis, drug analysis, and biological and clinical analysis by utilizing their internal porosity, tunable structural size, and energy transfer between rare-earth ions, ligands, and photosensitizer molecules. In addition, because the luminescence properties of rare-earth ions are highly dependent on the structural details of the coordination environment surrounding the rare-earth ions, and although their excitation lifetimes are long, they are usually not burst by oxygen and can provide an effective platform for chemical sensing. In order to further promote the development of fluorescence sensing technology based on Ln-MOFs, we summarize and review in detail the latest progress of the construction of Ln-MOF materials for fluorescence sensing applications and related sensor components, including design strategies, preparation methods, and modification considerations and initially propose the future development prospects and prospects.

Abstract:To date, the breadth of scientific research that has been devoted to investigating the photochemical and photophysical behavior of the lanthanide elements has generally fallen into one of two camps: solution studies of luminescent lanthanide metal-ligand complexes or investigations of solid-state nanoparticles, composed primarily of, or doped with, lanthanide lumiphores. In the latter case, most research of lanthanide nanocolloids has precluded any investigations regarding the use of organic ligands to overcome the difficulties associated with f-f excitation of lanthanides. Instead, most work on condensed-phase lanthanide luminescence has centered on strategies such as d-f charge separation in divalent lanthanides and the sensitization of lanthanide excited states using quantum dots. Current work now aims at bridging the camps of condensed-phase lanthanide photophysics and the solution chemistry of ligand-lanthanide molecular complexes. Recent efforts have partly focused on the fundamental characterization of NaGd1-xLnxF4 nanoparticles featuring surface display of the sensitizer ligand 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO), showing these structures to be capable of converting absorbed UV light into luminescence from Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions. These results suggest such a use of the ligand sensitization as a tool of choice to overcome the constraints of UV solar spectrum/semiconductor band-gap mismatch and low absorption cross sections in solid-state lanthanide systems.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanide (Ln3+) doped luminescent nanocrystals are promising for applications ranging from biosensor, lasing, super-resolution nanoscopy, information security and so on. Although the utility prospect is of great attractions, the light absorption of these lanthanide doped nanocrystals is inherently weak due to the electric dipole-forbidden 4f → 4f transitions. Even worse, the quantum yields of upconverison nanocrystals are very low, which will unavoidably hinder their further applications. In a typical lanthanide luminescent nanosystem, both sensitizers as light absorption centers and activators as light emitting centers are necessary and important for desired luminescence properties. Among various sensitization systems, only Yb3+ and Nd3+ are considered as the most efficient sensitizers. Thus, the corresponding excitation wavelengths are strictly limited around 980 and 808 nm. To enrich excitation wavelengths and boost luminescence intensity, exploring more sensitization units that possess larger absorption cross section, higher efficiency of energy transfer process and independent excitation is imperative and beneficial for the demands of different applications, such as broadened absorption in near infrared (NIR) region for higher conversion efficiency of solar cells, prolonged excitation wavelength to second near infrared windows region (NIR II, 1,000–1,700 nm) for in vivo fluorescence imaging with deeper tissue depth and higher spatial resolution, more orthogonal excitations and emissions to improve optical multiplexing, and so on. Therefore, in the review, we primarily conclude several major energy transfer mechanisms from sensitizers to activators. Then we present three kinds of sensitizers, including lanthanide ions, organic dyes and quantum dots (QDs), and introduce the newly designed sensitization system that allows us to exploit superior excitation wavelength and amplify luminescence intensity. Finally, several future challenges and opportunities for the sensitizing strategies are discussed in hope of directing and broadening the applications of lanthanide nanosystem.
