Abstract:Continuing the previous work on configuration, performance, cost, and safety of liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) storage for Class 8 heavy-duty trucks, we examine and demonstrate the feasibility of meeting the targets of 750 mile (1200 km) driving range, 65 kg H 2 storage capacity, 8–10 kg/min refueling rate, 4.6 g H 2 /s peak discharge rate, 1–3 day dormancy, 5000 refueling cycles, 15% gravimetric capacity, 35 g/L volumetric capacity, and $8/kWh total system cost. A thermodynamic model is developed to determine the useable H 2 density considering ullage and LH 2 heel subject to heat transfer through the multilayer vacuum insulation and dormancy in the limits of "full" and "empty" fuel tanks. Dynamic simulations are conducted to determine the fraction of gaseous H 2 returned to the station Dewar during refueling and heat input by H 2 recirculation through an in-tank heat exchanger during discharge. The system gravimetric and volumetric capacities are affected by availability of on-board LH 2 pump, discharge pressure, and dormancy. Compared to compressed H 2 at 350 and 700 bar in carbon fiber wound Type 4 tanks, LH 2 storage in double walled, vacuum insulated, low-pressure Type 1 tanks for heavy duty trucks shows advantages of 34–54% higher useable H 2 storage density, 59–68% higher gravimetric capacity, 25–48% higher volumetric capacity, and 36–41% lower cost.

Abstract:We investigate the potential of liquid hydrogen storage (LH 2 ) on-board Class-8 heavy duty trucks to resolve many of the range, weight, volume, refueling time and cost issues associated with 350 or 700-bar compressed H 2 storage in Type-3 or Type-4 composite tanks. We present and discuss conceptual storage system configurations capable of supplying H 2 to fuel cells at 5-bar with or without on-board LH 2 pumps. Structural aspects of storing LH 2 in double walled, vacuum insulated, and low-pressure Type-1 tanks are investigated. Structural materials and insulation methods are discussed for service at cryogenic temperatures and mitigation of heat leak to prevent LH 2 boil-off. Failure modes of the liner and shell are identified and analyzed using the regulatory codes and detailed finite element (FE) methods. The conceptual systems are subjected to a failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) and a safety, codes, and standards (SCS) review to rank failures and identify safety gaps. The results indicate that the conceptual systems can reach 19.6% useable gravimetric capacity, 40.9 g-H 2 /L useable volumetric capacity and $174–183/kg-H 2 cost (2016 USD) when manufactured 100,000 systems annually.

Abstract:Diesel-LNG internal combustion engines (ICEs) are the most promising light and heavy-duty truck (HDT) powering solution for a transition towards a mixed electric-hydrogen renewable energy economy. The diesel-liquid CH4 ICEs have indeed many commonalities with diesel-liquid H2 ICEs, in the infrastructure, on-board fuel storage, and injection technology, despite the fact H2 needs a much lower temperature. The paper outlines the advantages of dual fuel (2F) diesel-LNG ICEs developed adopting two high-pressure (HP) injectors per cylinder, one for the diesel and one for the LNG, plus super-turbocharging. The diesel-LNG ICEs provide high fuel energy conversion efficiencies, and reduced CO2, PM, and NOx emissions. Super-turbocharging permits the shaping of the torque curve while improving acceleration transients. Diesel-LNG ICEs may also clean up the air of background pollution in many polluted areas in the world. Computational results prove the steady-state advantages of the proposed novel design. While the baseline diesel model is a validated model, the 2F LNG model is not. The perfect alignment of the diesel and diesel-LNG ICE performances proven by Westport makes however the proposed results trustworthy.
Technical assessment and feasibility validation of liquid hydrogen storage and supply system for heavy-duty fuel cell truck

Abstract:In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of compressed gaseous hydrogen system and liquid hydrogen system are compared and analyzed from the perspective of hydrogen storage density and energy consumption. It is proved that on-board liquid hydrogen system is the most economical and efficient and environmentally friendly choice for heavy-duty trucks which are running continuously at high speed and long distance. This paper also conducted a joint test of a large-capacity liquid hydrogen system and a fuel cell system. The results show that the on-board liquid hydrogen system can provide relatively stable pressure for the fuel cell stack at dynamic and steady-state conditions. The liquid hydrogen system is highly compatible with fuel cell system and can be applied to high-power fuel cell system. This study makes it promising to develop a new generation of heavy-duty fuel cell truck with long driving range, high load capacity and high power.

Abstract:As the global demand for lower carbon emissions intensifies, the deployment of medium and small-scale liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage tanks in heavy-duty trucking and aviation is expected to increase. However, heat leakage into these cryogenic vessels leads to a continuous increase in tank pressure, potentially resulting in sudden hydrogen release and other safety concerns. While horizontal LH2 tanks demonstrate greater suitability in the transportation sector compared to vertical tanks, investigations in this domain remain scarce. Research on horizontal tanks is crucial for safe and efficient storage. Understanding these dynamics is essential for predicting temperature and pressure changes during self-pressurization, ensuring safe liquid hydrogen storage. This study designed and built a 500-liter horizontal liquid hydrogen tank for vehicle fuel storage, following ISO 13985 standards to ensure practical applicability. The project encompassed material selection, structural design, and both stress and thermodynamic analyses. Preliminary experiments were conducted using liquid nitrogen as a substitute for liquid hydrogen. Experiments assessed tank heat leakage, vapor-cooled shield insulation performance, thermal stratification, lossless storage time, and pressure changes during self-pressurization and steady-state evaporation. Results validate the efficiency of our pressure vessel design method for complex conditions, enhancing understanding of self-pressurization and thermal stratification in horizontal tanks. The vapor-cooled shield reduced heat leakage into the tank by 22.7%, decreasing the daily evaporation rate under liquid nitrogen conditions from 1.87 wt% to 1.5 wt%. and maintaining an initial liquid level of 50% extended the lossless storage time to 50 hours in the LN2 scenario. These findings offer valuable insights for assessing the performance of subsequent liquid hydrogen experiments.

Abstract:Hydrogen-driven heavy-duty trucks are a promising technology for reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. Thus, storing hydrogen efficiently onboard is vital. The three available or currently developed physical hydrogen storage technologies (compressed gaseous, subcooled liquid, and cryo-compressed hydrogen) are promising solutions. For a profound thermodynamic comparison of these storage systems, a universally applicable model is required. Thus, this article introduces a generalized thermodynamic model and conducts thermodynamic comparisons in terms of typical drive cycle scenarios. Therefore, a model introduced by Hamacher et al. [1] for cryo-compressed hydrogen tanks is generalized by means of an explicit model formulation using the property cv2P from REFPROP [2] , which is understood as a generic specific isochoric two-phase heat capacity. Due to an implemented decision logic, minor changes to the equation system are automatically made whenever the operation mode or phase of the tank changes. The resulting model can simulate all three storage tank systems in all operating scenarios and conditions in the single- and two-phase region. Additionally, the explicit model formulation provides deeper insights into the thermodynamic processes in the tank. The model is applied to the three physical hydrogen storage technologies to compare drive cycles, heat requirement, dormancy behavior, and optimal usable density. The highest driving ranges were achieved with cryo-compressed hydrogen, however, it also comes with higher heating requirements compared to subcooled liquid hydrogen.

Abstract:The presented contribution offers a theoretical analysis of the possibilities of implementing hydrogen technologies in agricultural machines and tractors. It discusses in more detail the structural designs and strength calculations of low-pressure transportable steel tanks for hydrogen storage for the ET 3000 electric tractor, in which the accumulators will be replaced by designed metal hydride tanks. The structural design of low-pressure tanks meets the requirements of the STN EN 13322-2 standard, which deals with the technical and structural design of transportable pressure tanks. The design and construction of tanks are key from the point of view of the real implementation of hydrogen technology in a fully functional small tractor for the purpose of its long-term testing.
Refueling of LH2 Aircraft—Assessment of Turnaround Procedures and Aircraft Design Implication

Abstract:Green liquid hydrogen (LH2) could play an essential role as a zero-carbon aircraft fuel to reach long-term sustainable aviation. Excluding challenges such as electrolysis, transportation and use of renewable energy in setting up hydrogen (H2) fuel infrastructure, this paper investigates the interface between refueling systems and aircraft, and the impacts on fuel distribution at the airport. Furthermore, it provides an overview of key technology design decisions for LH2 refueling procedures and their effects on the turnaround times as well as on aircraft design. Based on a comparison to Jet A-1 refueling, new LH2 refueling procedures are described and evaluated. Process steps under consideration are connecting/disconnecting, purging, chill-down, and refueling. The actual refueling flow of LH2 is limited to a simplified Reynolds term of v · d = 2.35 m2/s. A mass flow rate of 20 kg/s is reached with an inner hose diameter of 152.4 mm. The previous and subsequent processes (without refueling) require 9 min with purging and 6 min without purging. For the assessment of impacts on LH2 aircraft operation, process changes on the level of ground support equipment are compared to current procedures with Jet A-1. The technical challenges at the airport for refueling trucks as well as pipeline systems and dispensers are presented. In addition to the technological solutions, explosion protection as applicable safety regulations are analyzed, and the overall refueling process is validated. The thermodynamic properties of LH2 as a real, compressible fluid are considered to derive implications for airport-side infrastructure. The advantages and disadvantages of a subcooled liquid are evaluated, and cost impacts are elaborated. Behind the airport storage tank, LH2 must be cooled to at least 19K to prevent two-phase phenomena and a mass flow reduction during distribution. Implications on LH2 aircraft design are investigated by understanding the thermodynamic properties, including calculation methods for the aircraft tank volume, and problems such as cavitation and two-phase flows. In conclusion, the work presented shows that LH2 refueling procedure is feasible, compliant with the applicable explosion protection standards and hence does not impact the turnaround procedure. A turnaround time comparison shows that refueling with LH2 in most cases takes less time than with Jet A-1. The turnaround at the airport can be performed by a fuel truck or a pipeline dispenser system without generating direct losses, i.e., venting to the atmosphere.

Abstract:Against the global energy transition towards decarbonization and zero-carbon targets, hydrogen (H2) has emerged as a promising medium for energy storage and transportation in large-scale systems. Simultaneously, liquefied natural gas (LNG), serves as a transitional resource in moving towards cleaner energy sources. Consequently, the integration of LNG into liquid hydrogen (LH2) has garnered significant attention in recent years. This paper comprehensively reviews current research on LH2 production processes by integrating the energy mass of LNG. These processes, which include pre-cooling H2 utilizing the cold energy released from LNG regasification, producing blue H2 from natural gas (NG) derived from LNG regasification, synergistic liquefaction of NG and H2, and simultaneous production of LNG and LH2 from industrial byproducts, can markedly increase the thermodynamic efficiency. Furthermore, this study explores potential future developments that could benefit both aspects of the LH2-LNG economy, thereby expanding the scope of related research. The integration of LNG into the LH2 production process through an energy mass approach, aimed at creating a mutually beneficial LH2-LNG economy, is an effective strategy for fostering energy transition. Finally, a brief discussion is presented on the constraints and challenges that may affect the future growth of the global LH2-LNG economy.
Liquid pump-enabled hydrogen refueling system for medium and heavy duty fuel cell vehicles: Station design and technoeconomic assessment

Abstract:Recent progress in submerged liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) cryopump technology development offers improved hydrogen fueling performance at a reduced cost in medium- and heavy-duty (MDV and HDV) fuel cell vehicle refueling applications at 35 MPa pressure, compared to fueling via gas compression. In this paper, we evaluate the fueling cost associated with cryopump-based refueling stations for different MDV and HDV hydrogen demand profiles. We adapt the Heavy Duty Refueling Station Analysis Model (HDRSAM) tool to analyze the submerged cryopump case, and compare the estimated fuel dispensing costs of stations supplied with LH 2 for fueling Class 4 delivery van (MDV), public transit bus (HDV), and Class 8 truck (HDV) fleets using cryopumps relative to station designs. A sensitivity analysis around upstream costs illustrates the trade-offs associated with H 2 production from onsite electrolysis versus central LH 2 production and delivery. Our results indicate that LH 2 cryopump-based stations become more economically attractive as the total station capacity (kg dispensed per day) and hourly demand (vehicles per hour) increase. Depending on the use case, savings relative to next best options range from about 5% up to 44% in dispensed costs, with more favorable economics at larger stations with high utilization.

Abstract:Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have increased driving ranges and faster refueling times than battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The driving range of FCEVs can be increased by increasing the size, quantity or operating pressure of on-board hydrogen storage tanks at a lower weight and cost than increasing the size or number of Li-ion battery packs in BEVs. Ffast-refueling leads to less waiting time at the fueling station for high-utilization commercial vehicles. As a result, fuel cell system heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) are attracting more attention [1]. Currently, the lack of a hydrogen refueling infrastructure is limiting FCEV adoption. Since the driving routes of HDV trucks are more predictable, a small number of strategically located fueling stations could service pre-planned truck driving routes [2]. While hydrogen refueling protocols and fueling stations for light-duty vehicles (LDV) have been extensively studied [3,4,5], HDV trucks have different refueling protocols and operating conditions (e.g. mass holdup, pressure, refueling rate). To our knowledge, little work has been done on modeling hydrogen fueling stations for HDV trucks applications. With this motivation, a dynamic model of a truck stop coupled with green hydrogen production has been developed for fleet HDV trucks. At the truck stop, green hydrogen is produced from water electrolysis using solar photovoltaics (PV). Electrochemical hydrogen compression (EHC) is implemented for high-pressure hydrogen storage and dispensing. The fluctuations from solar PV and truck hydrogen demand are actively managed by installation of a spherical hydrogen storage vessel. The feasibility and flexibility of a truck stop using 100% renewable electricity and hydrogen will be discussed. A high-fidelity dynamic model of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer is developed for hydrogen production from PV electricity. A PEM electrochemical hydrogen compressor model is developed for gas pressurization with consideration of EHC temperature and water management. The green hydrogen is stored in a large spherical storage vessel to decouple the different PV power loads and HDV trucks hydrogen refueling demands. A modular system for HDV trucks refueling (nominal working pressure of 35 MPa) is designed and modeled with parallel multi-stage hydrogen compression and cascaded storage tanks. It was found that single modular system for FCEV refueling shows a service gap during hydrogen cascaded storage tank refilling, but a multiple modular structure can be easily expanded and provide uninterrupted hydrogen for FCEV refueling. The different hydrogen production and dispensing scenarios are implemented depending on the seasonal solar supply and varied HDV trucks demands. Hydrogen compression using mechanical compressor and electrochemical compressor are compared. The truck stop operation strategies are proposed based on the integrated process systems analysis of solar penetrations, hydrogen production and compression, and HDV trucks demand. The feasibility and flexibility of truck stop fueled by solar energy provide an insight for the transition to Net Zero Emission Transportation. Ship power plant with re-liquefaction installation for tankers transporting hydrogen

Abstract:The use of hydrogen as a fuel for tankers carrying liquefied hydrogen is discussed in the paper. As a solution to the problem of the world industry decarbonization, the possibility of competitive use of hydrogen as a fuel on sea tankers transporting liquefied hydrogen over long distances is discussed. The main reasons that encourage countries with sea and river vessels to develop in the direction of improving the ship power plants, in anticipation of tightening the national and international requirements for environmental pollution prevention, are indicated. A brief overview of the development of hydrogen energy is given on the example of leading projects in Europe and Asia, the most successful of which should include the transportation of compressed hydrogen by an experienced tanker of the Japanese company Kawasaki “Suiso Frontier” from Australia to Japan. A strategy for choosing the optimal propulsion unit for a liquefied hydrogen tanker is given. As research methods, the analysis of data obtained in similar studies, as well as the analysis of thermodynamic characteristics of promising systems, is used. Integrated power system designs and re-liquefaction systems for ocean tankers transporting hydrogen are proposed. Data on existing projects with low and high pressure gas engines, solid oxide fuel cells are given. Five prospective energy systems and a re-liquefaction system with a Claude cycle, using hydrogen and liquid natural gas as fuel and refrigerant, are suggested. Their technological feasibility and environmental impact are evaluated. The re-liquefaction systems’ exergy efficiency and specific energy consumption ranges are 26.79–46.27 % and 3–7.45 kWh/kg, respectively. A system with a low pressure engine, solid oxide fuel cells and a re-liquefaction system is determined to be optimal.

Abstract:Road transportation is a significant source of CO 2 emissions and energy demand. Consequently, initiatives are being promoted to decrease the sector's emissions and comply with the Paris agreement. This article synthesizes the available information about heavy-duty fuel cell trucks as their deployment needs to be considered a complementary solution to decreasing CO 2 emissions alongside battery electric vehicles. A thorough evaluation of 95 relevant documents determines that the main research topics in the past ten years converge on public policies, hydrogen supply chain, environmental impact, drivetrain technology, fuel cell, and storage tank applications. The identified research gaps relate to expanding collaboration between institutions and governments in developing joint green macro policies focused on hydrogen heavy-duty trucks, scarce research about hydrogen production energy sources, low interest in documenting hydrogen pilot projects, and minimal involvement of logistic companies, which need to plan their diesel freight's conversion as soon as possible.

In the non-transportation field, it is necessary to develop large-scale, low energy consumption and high safety hydrogen storage technology. localization key compressors and hydrogen injectors, improve the operation efficiency of hydrogen refueling stations and reduce the operational cost; Hydrogen production stations and liquid hydrogen refueling stations need to be developed.

Abstract:The recent release of hydrogen economy roadmaps for several major countries emphasizes the need for accelerated worldwide investment in research and development activities for hydrogen production, storage, infrastructure and utilization in transportation, industry and the electrical grid. Due to the high gravimetric energy density of hydrogen, the focus of technologies that utilize this fuel has recently shifted from light-duty automotive to heavy-duty vehicle applications. Decades of development of cost-effective and durable polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells must now be leveraged to meet the increased efficiency and durability requirements of the heavy-duty vehicle market. This Review summarizes the latest market outlooks and targets for truck, bus, locomotive and marine applications. Required changes to the fuel-cell system and operating conditions for meeting Class 8 long-haul truck targets are presented. The necessary improvements in fuel-cell materials and integration are also discussed against the benchmark of current passenger fuel-cell electric vehicles.

Abstract:Abstract Liquid hydrogen is important to long distance hydrogen transportation and development of heavy-duty vehicles, etc. China starts to deploy liquid hydrogen since 2020. To support the development of liquid hydrogen, three national standards for liquid hydrogen have been published. In this paper, national standards for liquid hydrogen specification, production, storage and transportation, and hydrogen fueling station are reviewed. Compared to USA, standards for liquid hydrogen in China are insufficient. It is important to establish a complete standard system for liquid hydrogen to better support the commercial, safe use of liquid hydrogen.

Abstract:In view of a vast hydrogen infrastructure, very large quantities of hydrogen may be distributed and stored as a liquid at about 20K (−253°C). Today hydrogen liquefiers are a mature technology for capacities up to 30ton day−1 and with energy requirements of 30–40MJ per kilogram of liquefied hydrogen, while the world's capacity today is around 350ton day−1, which is order of magnitudes lower than the required capacity for fueling a mobility largely based on hydrogen. Diverse investigations indicate though that liquefier capacity as high as 900ton day−1 as well as energy requirements as low as 18–25MJkg−1 may be achieved.

Abstract:A cold energy utilization scheme for dual-energy heavy-duty trucks (DHDTs) using liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) was proposed to reduce the evaporation loss of cryogenic fuel and enhance dormancy. High-performance thermal insulation of LH2 and LNG tanks is realized by combinatorial design of LNG cooled shield (LNGCS), LH2 cooled shield (LHCS) and multi-layer insulation (MLI). A thermodynamic model is established to optimize the positioning of LNGCS and LHCS within MLI system, and the impact of pressure and flow rate on heat leakage is analyzed, the reliability and environmental benefits of the cold energy utilization scheme is demonstrated for LNG and LH2 DHDTs. The results showed that LHCS can eliminate heat flux entering the LNG tank through MLI, and the optimal position for LNGCS within MLI was determined to be 75%. The heat absorption of LNGCS and LHCS was found to be inversely proportional to pressure and directly proportional to flow rate. In contrast to tanks without cooled shields, the daily evaporation rates of LNG and LH2 tanks decrease by 60.2% and 26.8% respectively. Moreover, LNGCS and LHCS significantly improved the dormancy of LNG and LH2 tanks.

Abstract:A potential solution to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector is to use alternatively fueled vehicles (AFV). Heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) emit a large share of GHG emissions in the transport sector and are therefore the subject of growing attention from global regulators. Fuel cell and green hydrogen technologies are a promising option to decarbonize HDVs, as their fast refueling and long vehicle ranges are in line with current logistic operation concepts. Moreover, the application of green hydrogen in transport could enable more effective integration of renewable energies (RE) across different energy sectors. This paper explores the interplay between HDV Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) that produce hydrogen locally and the power system by combining an infrastructure location planning model and an energy system optimization model that takes grid expansion options into account. Two scenarios - one sizing refueling stations in symbiosis with the power system and one sizing them independently of it - are assessed regarding their impacts on the total annual energy system costs, regional RE integration and the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). The impacts are calculated based on locational marginal pricing for 2050. Depending on the integration scenario, we find average LCOH of between 5.66 euro/kg and 6.20 euro/kg, for which nodal electricity prices are the main determining factor as well as a strong difference in LCOH between north and south Germany. From a system perspective, investing in HDV-HRS in symbiosis with the power system rather than independently promises cost savings of around one billion-euros per annum. We therefore conclude that the co-optimization of multiple energy sectors is important for investment planning and has the potential to exploit synergies.
