Abstract:The dynamics of the interaction of a system of two thin volatile liquid droplets resting on a soft viscoelastic solid substrate are investigated theoretically. The developed model fully considers the effect of evaporative cooling and the generated Marangoni stresses due to the induced thermal gradients, while also accounting for the effect of the gas phase composition and the diffusion of vapour in the atmosphere of the droplets. Using the framework of lubrication theory, we derive evolution equations for both the droplet profile and the displacement of the elastic solid, which are solved in combination with Laplace's equation for the vapour concentration in the gas phase. A disjoining-pressure/precursor-film approach is used to describe contact-line motion. The evolution equations are solved numerically, using the finite-element method, and we present a thorough parametric analysis to investigate the physical properties and mechanisms that affect the dynamics of droplet interactions. The results show that the droplets interact through both the soft substrate and the gas phase. In the absence of thermocapillary phenomena, the combined effect of non-uniform evaporation due to the increased vapour concentration between the two droplets and elastocapillary phenonema determines whether the drop-drop interaction is attractive or repulsive. The Marangoni stresses suppress droplet attraction at the early stages of the drying process and lead to longer droplet lifetimes. For substrates with intermediate stiffness, the emergence of spontaneous symmetry breaking at late stages of evaporation is found. The rich dynamics of this complex system is explored by constructing a detailed map of the dynamic regimes.

Abstract:The wetting phenomenon is related to improvements in the energy efficiency of many industrial devices and processes, including heat exchangers and nuclear power generation. However, despite the benefits of the application of the wetting phenomenon in many industrial devices, the theoretical description of the wetting phenomenon remains insufficient. Wettability is mainly related to an interaction between a liquid and a solid, and is characterized by a contact angle. When the volume of a droplet on a solid surface decreases due to a phase change such as evaporation, there are two stages in the droplet behavior. First, the contact angle decreases, with a constant contact area; this is known as contact angle hysteresis. Then, aft er reaching a certain contact angle, the contact line starts to recede with the size dependent on the contact angle. If a droplet is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state, this can oft en be explained using a modified Young equation in which the line tension is explicitly added. However, there are no adequate and convenient models to treat these phenomena in the nonequilibrium state. In the present study, the droplet behavior in natural evaporation was considered experimentally. Semiempirical models were proposed and compared with experimental data.

Abstract:We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the evaporation of particle-laden droplets on a heated surface. The droplets are composed of a Lennard-Jones fluid containing rigid particles which are spherical sections of an atomic lattice, and heating is controlled through the temperature of an atomistic substrate. We observe that sufficiently large (but still nano-sized) particle-laden drops exhibit contact line pinning, measure the outward fluid flow field which advects particle to the drop rim, and find that the structure of the resulting aggregate varies with inter-particle interactions. In addition, the profile of the evaporative fluid flux is measured with and without particles present, and is also found to be in qualitative agreement with earlier theory. The compatibility of simple nanoscale calculations and micron-scale experiments indicates that molecular simulation may be used to predict aggregate structure in evaporative growth processes.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulation of the evaporation of interface-resolved liquid droplets in decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence is performed in this study. The effect of the evaporation on droplet dynamics and turbulence is investigated by examining the turbulence kinetic energy, the dissipation rate, the power of surface tension and evaporation, and the flow topology structures. It is shown that the evaporation process can attenuate the turbulence kinetic energy, especially in the liquid phase. The hybrid power of surface tension and evaporation is shown to have a strong correlation with the rate of change in interface area, which is also derived mathematically. This work gives us a better understanding of the interaction between evaporating droplets and turbulence through using a high-fidelity interface-resolved method and potentially serves as the database to improve the droplet evaporation models in the dense spray zone. Droplet Evaporation to Boiling in Van Der Waals Fluid

Abstract:Superheated droplets vaporized in a vacuum or vapor chamber was studied using smoothed particle hydrodynamics method.The two-phase fluids of vapor and liquid with a diffused interface were modeled by Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations,with the van der Waals equation of state.The liquid-vapor separation was processed with different initial temperature and density.Simulation was firstly validated by the proper equilibrium states with analytical data from the binodal line of Maxwell construction,as well as the droplet surface tension compared with experimental and other groups'numerical data in a good agreement.Droplet morphology,density,temperature and entropy increment were then carefully examined during the dynamic process from evaporation to boiling.Four phase transitions patterns were concluded,namely from surface evaporation,internal bubble,fragment and explosion,to flash boiling with increasing equivalent superheat degree that is defined by the non-dimensional superheat temperature over surface tension.Results showed that droplet temperature and density decreased slightly at surface evaporation when equivalent superheat degree was lower than 1/3.Above this criterion,the internal bubble could be sustained.Growth of new liquid nucleates and connected secondary liquid ring were calculated by domain growth theory.We found that droplet continuous to expand at high superheat but withdrawn at equivalent superheat degree equal to or lower than 0.52.At equivalent superheat degree higher than 1,the growth and expansion of droplet resulted in liquid fragment and explosion to many small secondary droplets.Mean mass and diameter of these droplets were found to have power-law dependency on the expansion rate.Finally,fast flash boiling occurred at equivalent superheat degree higher than 3.The vapor pressure in the chamber showed a negative linear correlation between the overpressure and the atmospheric pressure.We also found out that comparing to increase the pressure value,dense gas had better efficiency on retarding the propagation of shock wave.

Abstract:<p>The utilization of nanocompounds can significantly enhance the production efficiency for solar steam generation, and much research and development efforts have been dedicated to designing their surface and structure to optimize the solar-heat conversion as well as evaporation performance. In particular, computational modeling studies using molecular dynamic (MD) simulations had been extensively performed for this objective. However, those studies typically assumed constant vacuum evaporation, thus yielding unrealistically high evaporation fluxes compared to laboratory and field measurements reported in the literature. To address this issue, we capture the transient thermodynamic properties of a nano water droplet that undergoes evaporation in a vapor medium under a closed periodic system with vapor pressures, using non-equilibrium MD simulations with the ELBA coarse-grain model. The changes of the nanodroplet and the localized vapor pressures inside the system from vacuum to saturation are monitored quantitatively. In addition, the varying radial extent of the Knudsen layer around the droplet is determined spatially through the transient pressure and energy distribution. The results illustrate the dynamical changes in the evaporation behavior from the diffusive-dominant to the kinetically limited transport mechanism. They also explain why the Kelvin equation can still apply in nanometer-scale systems, due to the fact that the density profiles are independent of the changes in pressure gradients. The Hertz-Knudsen Schrage equation, which is commonly used to compute the evaporation flux in the literature, is found unable to accurately predict the transient evaporative behavior observed. Thus, the results from this study illustrate that future molecular dynamic evaporation studies need to identify the location of the Knudsen layer in the simulations when calculating bulk evaporation fluxes in realistic vapor ambient conditions, due to its predominance in nanoscale interfacial processes.</p>

Abstract:The evaporation of a tiny amount of water on the solid surface with different wettability has been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We found that, as the surface changed from hydrophobicity to hydrophility, the evaporation speed did not show a monotonically decrease from intuition, but increased first, and then decreased after reached a maximum value. The competition between the number of the water molecules on the water-gas surface from where the water molecules can evaporate and the potential barrier to prevent those water molecules from evaporating results in the unexpected behavior of the evaporation. A theoretical model based on those two factors can fit the simulation data very well. This finding is helpful in understanding the evaporation on the biological surfaces, designing artificial surface of ultra fast water evaporating or preserving water in soil.

Abstract:The impact dynamics of water drops on porous surfaces wetted by a hygroscopic ionic liquid aqueous solution are investigated. Firstly, to better illustrate the different dynamic characteristics of water drops on ionic liquid-wetted porous surfaces, it is compared with that on the dry and water-wetted porous surfaces. The results indicate that, the water drop barely penetrates on the dry porous surface at ambient temperature, but penetrate when the surface temperature is raised or the surface is pre-wetted. The maximum spreading and penetration of the droplet on the ionic liquid-wetted surface is larger and faster than that on the water-wetted surface. Then, the effect of the mass fraction of aqueous ionic liquid, impact velocity, porosity on the spreading and penetration is explored. The larger the mass fraction of aqueous ionic liquid on the porous surface, the faster the droplet spreading factor, height, and residual volume decrease. The effect of impact velocity is even more pronounced for the water droplets impacting on pure ionic liquid-wetted porous surfaces. A higher porosity contributes to a smaller spreading diameter but a larger volume decreasing rate on the wetted porous surface.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Binary Nanodroplet Evaporation on a Heated Homogeneous Substrate

Abstract:The evaporation mechanism of miscible binary nanodroplets from heated homogeneous surfaces was studied by molecular dynamics simulations, which has never been studied before. The binary droplets contain a hydrophilic component (type-2 particles) and a hydrophobic component (type-3 particles). It is shown that liquid-liquid interaction strength (epsilon(23)) and hydrophilic particle number fraction (phi) have great influence on the surface tension, wetting characteristics, evaporation patterns, evaporation rate, and local mass flux. It is observed that when epsilon(23) >= 1, or phi approximate to 0.5, the evaporation mode is the constant-contact-angle mode. Otherwise, it is the mixed mode. We found that the evaporation rate becomes faster when phi and epsilon(23) increase. The droplets become more hydrophilic when phi increases, which promotes heat transfer efficiency between the liquid-solid interface. Besides, a larger epsilon(23) promotes the heat transfer inside the droplet. The mass transfer to the vapor phase occurs preferentially in the vicinity of TPCL (three phase contact line) in the hydrophilic systems (theta < theta(c)), where theta(c) is the critical contact angle, while in most hydrophobic systems (theta > theta(c)), the mass flux close to the TPCL is suppressed. We found that theta(c) is an element of(102 degrees-106 degrees), which is different from the theoretical one, theta(c) = 90 degrees. The discrepancy is attributed to the existence of the adsorption layer near the TPCL.
Droplet motion driven by humidity gradients during evaporation and condensation

Abstract:The motion of droplets on solid surfaces in response to an external gradient is a fundamental problem with a broad range of applications, including water harvesting, heat exchange, mixing and printing. Here we study the motion of droplets driven by a humidity gradient, i.e. a variation in concentration of their own vapour in the surrounding gas phase. Using lattice-Boltzmann simulations of a diffuse-interface hydrodynamic model to account for the liquid and gas phases, we demonstrate that the droplet migrates towards the region of higher vapour concentration. This effect holds in situations where the ambient gradient drives either the evaporation or the condensation of the droplet, or both simultaneously. We identify two main mechanisms responsible for the observed motion: a difference in surface wettability, which we measure in terms of the Young stress, and a variation in surface tension, which drives a Marangoni flow. Our results are relevant in advancing our knowledge of the interplay between gas and liquid phases out of thermodynamic equilibrium, as well as for applications involving the control of droplet motion.

High humidity enhances the evaporation of non-aqueous volatile sprays

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the evaporation of very volatile liquid droplets (Novec 7000 Engineered Fluid) in a turbulent spray. Droplets with diameters of the order of a few micrometers are produced by a spray nozzle and then injected into a purpose-built enclosed dodecahedral chamber, where the ambient temperature and relative humidity in the chamber are carefully controlled. We observe water condensation on the rapidly evaporating droplet, both for the spray and for a single acoustically levitated millimetric Novec 7000 droplet. We further examine the effect of humidity, and reveal that a more humid environment leads to faster evaporation of the volatile liquid, as well as more water condensation. This is explained by the much larger latent heat of water. We extend an analytical model based on Fick's law to quantitatively account for the data.

On the Modeling of Droplet Evaporation on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:When a drop of water is placed on a rough surface, there are two possible extreme regimes of wetting: the one called Cassie-Baxter (CB) with air pockets trapped underneath the droplet and the one characterized by the homogeneous wetting of the surface, called the Wenzel (W) state. A way to investigate the transition between these two states is by means of evaporation experiments, in which the droplet starts in a CB state and, as its volume decreases, penetrates the surface's grooves, reaching a W state. Here we present a theoretical model based on the global interfacial energies for CB and W states that allows us to predict the thermodynamic wetting state of the droplet for a given volume and surface texture. We first analyze the influence of the surface geometric parameters on the droplet's final wetting state with constant volume, and show that it depends strongly on the surface texture. We then vary the volume of the droplet keeping fixed the geometric surface parameters to mimic evaporation and show that the drop experiences a transition from the CB to the W state when its volume reduces, as observed in experiments. To investigate the dependency of the wetting state on the initial state of the droplet, we implement a cellular Potts model in three dimensions. Simulations show a very good agreement with theory when the initial state is W, but it disagrees when the droplet is initialized in a CB state, in accordance with previous observations which show that the CB state is metastable in many cases. Both simulations and theoretical model can be modified to study other types of surface.
Humidity-insensitive water evaporation from molecular complex fluids

Abstract:We investigated theoretically water evaporation from concentrated supramolecular mixtures, such as solutions of polymers or amphiphilic molecules, using numerical resolutions of a one dimensional model based on mass transport equations. Solvent evaporation leads to the formation of a concentrated solute layer at the drying interface, which slows down evaporation in a long-time scale regime. In this regime, often referred to as the falling rate period, evaporation is dominated by diffusive mass transport within the solution, as already known. However, we demonstrate that, in this regime, the rate of evaporation does not also depend on the ambient humidity for many molecular complex fluids. Using analytical solutions in some limiting cases, we first demonstrate that a sharp decrease of the water chemical activity at high solute concentration, leads to evaporation rates which depend weakly on the humidity, as the solute concentration at the drying interface slightly depends on the humidity. However, we also show that a strong decrease of the mutual diffusion coefficient of the solution enhances considerably this effect, leading to nearly independent evaporation rates over a wide range of humidity. The decrease of the mutual diffusion coefficient indeed induces strong concentration gradients at the drying interface, which shield the concentration profiles from humidity variations, except in a very thin region close to the drying interface.

Abstract:Biogenic sources as well as human activities contribute large amounts of volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere. Upon oxidation, polyfunctional molecules such as dicarboxylic acids are formed. These molecules generally have lower vapor pressures than the parent molecules and are able to condense on existing particles or maybe even participate in formation of new particles in the atmosphere. Current knowledge about the thermodynamic properties governing this partitioning as well as the influence of the organic molecules on properties of aqueous solution droplets is poor . We have therefore developed a method based on the HTDMA technique (Hygroscopicity Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer, see Fig.1) for determining the sub-cooled liquid state vapor pressure as well as other thermodynamic properties of secondary organic aerosol components.

Abstract:The evaporation flux distribution of sessile drops is investigated by molecular dynamic simulations. Three evaporating modes are classified, including the diffusion dominant mode, the substrate heating mode, and the environment heating mode. Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drop-substrate interactions are considered. To count the evaporation flux distribution, which is position dependent, we proposed an azimuthal-angle-based division method under the assumption of spherical crown shape of drops. The modeling results show that the edge evaporation, i.e., near the contact line, is enhanced for hydrophilic drops in all the three modes. The surface diffusion of liquid molecular absorbed on solid substrate for hydrophilic cases plays an important role as well as the space diffusion on the enhanced evaporation rate at the edge. For hydrophobic drops, the edge evaporation flux is higher for the substrate heating mode, but lower than elsewhere of the drop for the diffusion dominant mode; however, a nearly uniform distribution is found for the environment heating mode. The evidence shows that the temperature distribution inside drops plays a key role in the position-dependent evaporation flux.

Abstract:The present article experimentally and theoretically probes the evaporation kinetics of sessile saline droplets. Observations reveal that presence of solvated ions leads to modulated evaporation kinetics, which is further a function of surface wettability. On hydrophilic surfaces, increasing salt concentration leads to enhanced evaporation rates, whereas on superhydrophobic surfaces, it first enhances and reduces with concentration. Also, the nature and extents of the evaporation regimes constant contact angle or constant contact radius are dependent on the salt concentration. The reduced evaporation on superhydrophobic surfaces has been explained based on observed via microscopy crystal nucleation behaviour within the droplet. Purely diffusion driven evaporation models are noted to be unable to predict the modulated evaporation rates. Further, the changes in the surface tension and static contact angles due to solvated salts also cannot explain the improved evaporation behaviour. Internal advection is observed using PIV to be generated within the droplet and is dependent on the salt concentration. The advection dynamics has been used to explain and quantify the improved evaporation behaviour by appealing to the concept of interfacial shear modified Stefan flows around the evaporating droplet. The analysis leads to accurate predictions of the evaporation rates. Further, another scaling analysis has been proposed to show that the thermal and solutal Marangoni advection within the system leads to the advection behaviour. The analysis also shows that the dominant mode is the solutal advection and the theory predicts the internal circulation velocities with good accuracy. The findings may be of importance to microfluidic thermal and species transport systems.

Influence of surface wettability on transport mechanisms governing water droplet evaporation

Abstract:Prediction and manipulation of the evaporation of small droplets is a fundamental problem with importance in a variety of microfluidic, microfabrication, and biomedical applications. A vapor-diffusion-based model has been widely employed to predict the interfacial evaporation rate; however, its scope of applicability is limited due to incorporation of a number of simplifying assumptions of the physical behavior. Two key transport mechanisms besides vapor diffusion-evaporative cooling and natural convection in the surrounding gas-are investigated here as a function of the substrate wettability using an augmented droplet evaporation model. Three regimes are distinguished by the instantaneous contact angle (CA). In Regime I (CA ≲ 60°), the flat droplet shape results in a small thermal resistance between the liquid-vapor interface and substrate, which mitigates the effect of evaporative cooling; upward gas-phase natural convection enhances evaporation. In Regime II (60 ≲ CA ≲ 90°), evaporative cooling at the interface suppresses evaporation with increasing contact angle and counterbalances the gas-phase convection enhancement. Because effects of the evaporative cooling and gas-phase convection mechanisms largely neutralize each other, the vapor-diffusion-based model can predict the overall evaporation rates in this regime. In Regime III (CA ≳ 90°), evaporative cooling suppresses the evaporation rate significantly and reverses entirely the direction of natural convection induced by vapor concentration gradients in the gas phase. Delineation of these counteracting mechanisms reconciles previous debate (founded on single-surface experiments or models that consider only a subset of the governing transport mechanisms) regarding the applicability of the classic vapor-diffusion model. The vapor diffusion-based model cannot predict the local evaporation flux along the interface for high contact angle (CA ≥ 90°) when evaporative cooling is strong and the temperature gradient along the interface determines the peak local evaporation flux.
Interplay of transport mechanisms during the evaporation of a pinned sessile water droplet

Abstract:Droplet evaporation has been intensively investigated in past decades owing to its emerging applications in diverse fields of science and technology. Yet the role transport mechanisms has been the subject of a heated debate, especially the presence of Marangoni flow in water droplets. This work aims to draw a clear picture of the switching transport mechanisms inside a drying pinned sessile water droplet in both the presence and absence of thermocapillarity by developing a comprehensive model that accounts for all pertinent physics in both phases as well as interfacial phenomena at the interface. The model reveals a hitherto unexplored mixed radial and buoyant flow by shedding light on the transition from buoyancy induced Rayleigh flow to the radial flow causing coffee ring effect. Predictions of the model excellently match previous experimental results across varying substrate temperatures only in the absence of Marangoni flow. When thermocapillarity is accounted for, strong surface flows shape the liquid velocity field during most of the droplet lifetime and the model starts to overestimate evaporation rates with increasing substrate temperature.

Abstract:Although droplets evaporation is fundamental to many applications and phenomena, accurate prediction of their evaporation trajectory is still a technological gap today. This is even more so for nanodroplets when compared to the macro-sized droplets. Since it is technically challenging to observe real nanodroplets evaporation today, this contribution uses full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to observe and quantify suspended water nanodroplets evaporation. There are two main findings to this contribution. First, it is shown in detail that continuum analysis significantly over predicts the evaporation rate of nanodroplets. This makes continuum analysis unsuitable to predict water nanodroplets' behavior. Secondly, this contribution illustrates the use of data-driven approach that can be used for nanodroplets evaporation behavior prediction, instead of running full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations for every different condition, which can be prohibitively expensive. The paper hopes to encourage scientists working in similar field to share their MD results for nanodroplets evaporation to build a data-driven model that could be used to predict nanodroplets evaporation trajectory at a fraction of the cost of full-scale MD simulations.

Abstract:A comprehensive numerical and experimental investigation on micrometer-sized water droplet impact dynamics and evaporation on an unheated, flat, dry surface is conducted from the standpoint of spray-cooling technology. The axisymmetric time-dependent governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and species are solved. Surface tension, wall adhesion effect, gravitational body force, contact line dynamics, and evaporation are accounted for in the governing equations. The explicit volume of fluid (VOF) model with dynamic meshing and variable-time stepping in serial and parallel processors is used to capture the time-dependent liquid-gas interface motion throughout the computational domain. The numerical model includes temperature- and species-dependent thermodynamic and transport properties. The contact line dynamics and the evaporation rate are predicted using Blake's and Schrage's molecular kinetic models, respectively. An extensive grid independence study was conducted. Droplet impingement and evaporation data are acquired with a standard dispensing/imaging system and high-speed photography. The numerical results are compared with measurements reported in the literature for millimeter-size droplets and with current microdroplet experiments in terms of instantaneous droplet shape and temporal spread (R/D(0) or R/R(E)), flatness ratio (H/D(0)), and height (H/H(E)) profiles, as well as temporal volume (inverted A) profile. The Weber numbers (We) for impinging droplets vary from 1.4 to 35.2 at nearly constant Ohnesorge number (Oh) of approximately 0.025-0.029. Both numerical and experimental results show that there is air bubble entrapment due to impingement. Numerical results indicate that Blake's formulation provides better results than the static (SCA) and dynamic contact angle (DCA) approach in terms of temporal evolution of R/D(0) and H/D(0) (especially at the initial stages of spreading) and equilibrium flatness ratio (H(E)/D(0)). Blake's contact line dynamics is dependent on the wetting parameter (K(W)). Both numerical and experimental results suggest that at 4.5 < We < 11.0 the short-time dynamics of microdroplet impingement corresponds to a transition regime between two different spreading regimes (i.e., for We < or = 4.5, impingement is followed by spreading, then contact line pinning and then inertial oscillations, and for We > or = 11.0, impingement is followed by spreading, then recoiling, then contact line pinning and then inertial oscillations). Droplet evaporation can be satisfactorily modeled using the Schrage model, since it predicts both well-defined transient and quasi-steady evaporation stages. The model compares well with measurements in terms of flatness ratio (H/H(E)) before depinning occurs. Toroidal vortices are formed on the droplet surface in the gaseous phase due to buoyancy-induced Rayleigh-Taylor instability that enhances convection.
