Abstract:We study the problem of drag reduction (DR) in a lubricated conduit, in which a thin layer of low-viscosity (e.g., water) fluid is injected in the near-wall region and facilitates the transport of a core of high-viscosity fluid (e.g., oil). In the present investigation, the flow instance is a channel flow, and consequently we have one thin layer of low-viscosity fluid lubricating each wall. We run direct numerical simulations of this flow instance, respecting the protocol of the constant power input approach. This approach prescribes that the flow rate is adjusted according to current pressure gradient, so to keep constant the power injected into the flow, it mimics closely real transport pipelines. A phase-field method is used to describe the dynamics of the liquid-liquid interface. As this technique is tailored toward the transport of very viscous fluids like oils, we study the drag reduction performance of the system by keeping fixed the lubricating fluid properties (e.g., water) and by considering two different types of oil characterized by different viscosities, 10 and 100 times more viscous than water, respectively. As in real instances the presence of impurities and surfactants—which act by locally reducing the local value of the surface tension—is inevitable, we consider, for each type of transported oil, a clean and a surfactant-laden interface. For all four tested configurations, we unambiguously show that significant DR can be achieved. Reportedly, compared to the single-phase case, we observe a reduction of the mean pressure gradient down to px/px,sp=0.25 for the largest viscosity oil. By analyzing the features of turbulence in the lubricating layer, and the close interaction with the perturbations induced by the oil-water interface deformation, we elucidate the physical mechanisms leading to DR and we underline the effects of viscosity ratios and of surfactants. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.054611 ©2024 American Physical Society

Changes in turbulent dissipation in a channel flow with oscillating walls

Abstract:Harmonic oscillations of the walls of a turbulent plane channel flow are studied by direct numerical simulations to improve our understanding of the physical mechanism for skin-friction drag reduction. The simulations are carried out at constant pressure gradient in order to define an unambiguous inner scaling: in this case, drag reduction manifests itself as an increase of mass flow rate. Energy and enstrophy balances, carried out to emphasize the role of the oscillating spanwise shear layer, show that the viscous dissipations of the mean flow and of the turbulent fluctuations increase with the mass flow rate, and the relative importance of the latter decreases. We then focus on the turbulent enstrophy: through an analysis of the temporal evolution from the beginning of the wall motion, the dominant, oscillation-related term in the turbulent enstrophy is shown to cause the turbulent dissipation to be enhanced in absolute terms, before the slow drift towards the new quasi-equilibrium condition. This mechanism is found to be responsible for the increase in mass flow rate. We finally show that the time-average volume integral of the dominant term relates linearly to the drag reduction.

Global energy fluxes in fully-developed turbulent channels with flow control

Abstract:This paper addresses the integral energy fluxes in natural and controlled turbulent channel flows, where active skin-friction drag reduction techniques allow a more efficient use of the available power. We study whether the increased efficiency shows any general trend in how energy is dissipated by the mean velocity field (mean dissipation) and by the fluctuating velocity field (turbulent dissipation). Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of different control strategies are performed at Constant Power Input (CPI), so that at statistical equilibrium each flow (either uncontrolled or controlled by different means) has the same power input, hence the same global energy flux and, by definition, the same total energy dissipation rate. The simulations reveal that changes in mean and turbulent energy dissipation rates can be of either sign in a successfully controlled flow. A quantitative description of these changes is made possible by a new decomposition of the total dissipation, stemming from an extended Reynolds decomposition, where the mean velocity is split into a laminar component and a deviation from it. Thanks to the analytical expressions of the laminar quantities, exact relationships are derived that link the achieved flow rate increase and all energy fluxes in the flow system with two wall-normal integrals of the Reynolds shear stress and the Reynolds number. The dependence of the energy fluxes on the Reynolds number is elucidated with a simple model in which the control-dependent changes of the Reynolds shear stress are accounted for via a modification of the mean velocity profile. The physical meaning of the energy fluxes stemming from the new decomposition unveils their inter-relations and connection to flow control, so that a clear target for flow control can be identified.

Drag reduction utilizing a wall-attached ferrofluid film in turbulent channel flow

Abstract:This study explores the application of a wall-attached ferrofluid film to decrease skin friction drag in turbulent channel flow. We conduct experiments using water as a working fluid in a turbulent channel flow setup, where one wall is coated with a ferrofluid layer held in place by external permanent magnets. Depending on the flow conditions, the interface between the two fluids is observed to form unstable travelling waves. While ferrofluid coating has been previously employed in laminar and moderately turbulent flows to reduce drag by creating a slip condition at the fluid interface, its effectiveness in fully developed turbulent conditions, particularly when the interface exhibits instability, remains uncertain. Our primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of ferrofluid coating in reducing turbulent drag with particular focus on scenarios when the ferrofluid layer forms unstable waves. To achieve this, we measure flow velocity using two-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (2D-PTV), and the interface contour between the fluids is determined using an interface tracking algorithm. Our results reveal the significant potential of ferrofluid coating for drag reduction, even in scenarios where the interface between the surrounding fluid and ferrofluid exhibits instability. In particular, waves with an amplitude significantly smaller than a viscous length scale positively contribute to drag reduction, while larger waves are detrimental, because of induced turbulent fluctuations. However, for the latter case, slip out-competes the extra turbulence so that drag is still reduced.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations of active drag reduction using streamwise traveling waves in compressible turbulent boundary layer flow are conducted. The flow at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of R e θ = 1 , 000 is actuated by sinusoidal wall deflections traveling in the streamwise flow direction at wave speeds slightly above the freestream velocity. The results show a significant drag reduction, i.e., a decrease of Δ c d = 51 . 4 % for a Mach number M = 0 . 2 and Δ c d = 54 . 2 % for a Mach number M = 0 . 7 . For both Mach numbers, a thrust through the pressure is obtained instead of drag, contributing to the overall drag reduction. Positive net power saving is observed, although the actuation is considerably more efficient at M = 0 . 2 ( Δ P net = 32 . 2 % ) compared to M = 0 . 7 ( Δ P net = 15 . 6 % ). The local skin-friction reduction exhibits distinct peaks at the end of the actuated region, indicating a longer transition of turbulence suppression in flow with a higher Mach number. While the Reynolds stresses are generally reduced, a stronger suppression of the streamwise stresses is observed for M = 0 . 7 .

Abstract:Liquid-infused surfaces have recently gained prominence in engineering applications owing to their versatile characteristics such as self-cleaning, anti-fogging, drag reduction, and enhanced heat transfer. In this article, a numerical analysis of pressure-driven flow past a periodic array of rectangular transverse grooves infused with non-Newtonian immiscible lubricants is performed. The volume of fluid method is employed to capture the interface between primary and secondary fluids, and the power-law model is deployed to mimic the non-Newtonian lubricant. The drag reduction capability of the microchannel is examined for various parameters such as Reynolds number, liquid fraction, viscosity ratio, viscosity index, and contact angle. It is observed that the introduction of a non-Newtonian fluid (shear-thickening or shear-thinning) drastically modifies the interface velocity and hydrodynamic resistance. In particular, a shear-thinning lubricant enhances the slip length as the viscosity index (n) is reduced owing to the reduced viscosity at the interface. Note that, for a lubricant having n = 0.7, the percentage improvement in the slip length is 382% in comparison with a Newtonian counterpart having the same viscosity ratio, N = 0.1. Importantly, the introduction of a shear-thinning lubricant with a viscosity ratio N = 5, a liquid fraction of 0.8, and a behavior index n = 0.7 yielded a pressure drag reduction of 63.6% with respect to a classical no-slip channel and of 23% with reference to a microchannel with the Newtonian lubricant. Moreover, at high Reynolds numbers, Re→50, the drag mitigation is slightly lowered due to the primary vortex shift in the cavity. Furthermore, the effect of the interface contact angle (θc) is investigated, as θc drops from 90° (flat) to 45° (convex); the meniscus curvature is enhanced, and the effective slip length is reduced. These observations suggest that a shear-thinning lubricant-infused microchannel is a promising candidate for drag reduction in lab-on-chip applications.

Abstract:A parallel direct-forcing fictitious domain method is employed to perform fully resolved numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow laden with finite-size particles. The effects of the particle-fluid density ratio on the turbulence modulation in the channel flow are investigated at the friction Reynolds number of 180, the particle volume fraction of 0.84%, and the particle-fluid density ratio ranging from 1 to 104.2. The results show that the variation of the flow drag with the particle-fluid density ratio is not monotonic, with a larger flow drag for the density ratio of 10.42, compared to those of unity and 104.2. A significant drag reduction by the particles is observed for large particle-fluid density ratios during the transient stage, but not at the statistically stationary stage. The intensity of particle velocity fluctuations generally decreases with increasing particle inertia, except that the particle streamwise root-mean-square velocity and streamwise-transverse velocity correlation in the near-wall region are largest at the density ratio of the order of 10. The averaged momentum equations are derived with the spatial averaging theorem and are used to analyze the mechanisms for the effects of the particles on the flow drag. The results indicate that the drag-reduction effect due to the decrease in the fluid Reynolds shear stress is counteracted by the drag-enhancement effect due to the increase in the total particle stress or the interphase drag force for the large particle-inertia case. The sum of the total Reynolds stress and particle inner stress contributions to the flow drag is largest at the density ratio of the order of 10, which is the reason for the largest flow drag at this density ratio. The interphase drag force obtained from the averaged momentum equation (the balance theory) is significantly smaller than (but agrees qualitatively with) that from the empirical drag formula based on the phase-averaged slip velocity for large density ratios. For the neutrally buoyant case, the balance theory predicts a positive interphase force on the particles arising from the negative gradient of the particle inner stress, which cannot be predicted by the drag formula based on the phase-averaged slip velocity. In addition, our results show that both particle collision and particle-turbulence interaction play roles in the formation of the inhomogeneous distribution of the particles at the density ratio of the order of 10.

Abstract:The ability of streamwise-travelling waves of spanwise velocity to reduce the turbulent skin-friction drag is assessed in the compressible regime. Direct numerical simulations are carried out to compare drag reduction in subsonic, transonic and supersonic channel flows. Compressibility improves the benefits of the travelling waves, in a way that depends on the control parameters: drag reduction becomes larger than the incompressible one for small frequencies and wavenumbers. However, the improvement depends on the specific procedure employed for comparison. When the Mach number is varied and, at the same time, wall friction is changed by the control, the bulk temperature in the flow can either evolve freely in time until the aerodynamic heating balances the heat flux at the walls, or be constrained such that a fixed percentage of kinetic energy is transformed into thermal energy. Physical arguments suggest that, in the present context, the latter approach should be preferred. This provides a test condition in which the wall-normal temperature profile more realistically mimics that in an external flow, and also leads to a much better scaling of the results, over both the Mach number and the control parameters. Under this comparison, drag reduction is only marginally improved by compressibility.

Abstract:AbstractA comparative study about riblets-controlled turbulent boundary layers has been performed to investigate the turbulence characteristics associated with drag reduction in a compressive flat-plate flow (where the free-stream Mach number is 0.7) by means of direct numerical simulations (DNSs). With a setting of the triangular riblets (s+ ≈ 30.82, h+ ≈ 15.41) settled on the Reτ ≈ 500 turbulent boundary layer, an effective global drag reduction was achieved. By comparing velocity and its fluctuation distribution, vorticity fluctuation and streaks structures between the smooth and riblets flat-plate cases, two roles of lifting and rectification in terms of riblets drag control are revealed that the micro-scale riblets can lift up logarithmic-law region of the boundary layer, which leads to a smaller wall friction velocity and thus a drag reduction. The streamwise vortices and its fluctuation structures are shifted upward, thus the interactions between them and the wall surface are weakened, which causes the suppressed intensity of Reynolds normal stresses, streamwise vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy production inside the riblets. Moreover, the streaks associated with streamwise velocity or 3D vortices are ruled from the distorted to long and straight structures as they pass through the riblets, indicating an ability of riblets to turn turbulence into a more ordered state.
Drag reduction induced by superhydrophobic surfaces in turbulent pipe flow

Abstract:The drag reduction induced by superhydrophobic surfaces is investigated in turbulent pipe flow. Wetted superhydrophobic surfaces are shown to trap gas bubbles in their asperities. This stops the liquid from coming in direct contact with the wall in that location, allowing the flow to slip over the air bubbles. We consider a well defined texture with streamwise grooves at the walls in which the gas is expected to be entrapped. This configuration is modelled with alternating no-slip and shear-free boundary conditions at the wall. With respect to classical turbulent pipe flow, a substantial drag reduction is observed which strongly depends on the grooves' dimension and on the solid fraction, i.e. the ratio between the solid wall surface and the total surface of the pipe's circumference. The drag reduction is due to the mean slip velocity at the wall which increases the flow rate at a fixed pressure drop. The enforced boundary conditions also produce peculiar turbulent structures which on the contrary decrease the flow rate. The two concurrent effects provide an overall flow rate increase as demonstrated by means of the mean axial momentum balance. This equation provides the balance between the mean pressure gradient, the Reynolds stress, the mean flow rate and the mean slip velocity contributions.

Energy Balance in Turbulent Gas-Solid Channel Flow

Abstract:The aim of the present study is to examine the implications of particle additives on the transfer, conversion and dissipation of mechanical energy in a turbulent gas-solid channel flow. To achieve this goal we have performed two-way coupled direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of gas-solid channel flow. Equations for fluid mean flow kinetic energy (KE) and fluid turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) are used in the results analysis. To highlight the influence of particles, the KE budgets were compared with the results of un-laden channel flow, i.e. without any additives. It was found that in the un-laden flow, 57.2% of the energy input was directly dissipated in the mean flow, whereas 40.2% was converted to turbulence through mean shear production before being dissipated by viscous action at small scales. By contrast, in the particle-laden flow, the interaction of the particles and fluid appears in the energy budgets. In the mean-flow energy balance, the mean dissipation accounted for 59.1% of the energy supply. This is comparable with the un-laden flow. However, the energy loss from the mean flow reduced from 40.2% to 13.7%, but was partly compensated by the new sink term (24.7%) which represents negative work done by the particles. The results also suggested that the mean flow loses kinetic energy to particles in the centre region of the channel, whereas it gains energy from the particles in the near-wall region. In the TKE budget, the particles released kinetic energy to the turbulence and this energy is likely obtained from the mean flow. This extra energy supply compensates partially for the substantial reduction of the mean shear production to about 2/3rd of the production in the un-laden channel. Ultimately TKE is dissipated by deformation work due to the fluctuating viscous stresses. We concluded that the particles play an intermediary role in the energy transfer and conversion from the mean flow to the turbulence.
Boundary layer analysis of ventilated partial cavity for friction drag reduction

Abstract:This paper describes the use of water tunnel plate experiments and large eddy simulations to understand ventilated partial cavity (VPC) flow, especially the mechanism of friction drag reduction. The different flow behaviors along the flow direction indicate that VPC can be divided into three regions: continuous cavity, transitional cavity, and mixing cavity. Specifically, in the continuous cavity region, the flow state can be regarded as laminar; the density and dynamic viscosity are close to those of the strictly gas phase; and the resulting wall shear stress reaches minimum level along the flow direction. In the transitional cavity region, the flow state is similar to the transition state of single-phase flow with density, viscosity, and wall shear stress along the flow direction all exhibiting exponential growth. In the mixing cavity region, the flow state is analogous to turbulence. The flow is in a phase mixed state. The dynamic viscosity is close to that of the strictly water phase. The resulting wall shear stress is stable with small fluctuations. Importantly, the analytical boundary layer equation for wall shear stress derived from the momentum equation remains applicable to the continuous cavity and the mixing cavity regions.
Magnetic fluid film enables almost complete drag reduction across laminar and turbulent flow regimes

Abstract:In the race to curb energy and oil consumption, zeroing of wall frictional forces is highly desirable. The turbulent skin friction drag at the solid/liquid interface is responsible for substantial energy losses when conveying liquids through hydraulic networks, contributing approximately 10% to the global electric energy consumption. Despite extensive research, efficient drag reduction strategies effectively applicable in different flow regimes are still unavailable. Here, we use a wall-attached magnetic fluid film to achieve a wall drag reduction of up to 90% in channel flow. Using optical measurements supported by modelling, we find that the strong damping of wall friction emerges from the co-existence of slip and waviness at the coating interface, and the latter is a key factor to obtain almost complete wall drag reduction across laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Our magnetic fluid film is promising and ready to be applied in energy-saving and antifouling strategies in fluid transport and medical devices.

Abstract:We study suspensions of oblate rigid particles in a viscous fluid for different values of the particle volume fractions. Direct numerical simulations have been performed using a direct-forcing immersed boundary method to account for the dispersed phase, combined with a soft-sphere collision model and lubrication corrections for short-range particle-particle and particle-wall interactions. With respect to the single phase flow, we show that in flows laden with oblate spheroids the drag is reduced and the turbulent fluctuations attenuated. In particular, the turbulence activity decreases to lower values than those obtained by only accounting for the effective suspension viscosity. To explain the observed drag reduction we consider the particle dynamics and the interactions of the particles with the turbulent velocity field and show that the particle wall layer, previously observed and found to be responsible for the increased dissipation in suspensions of spheres, disappears in the case of oblate particles. These rotate significantly slower than spheres near the wall and tend to stay with their major axes parallel to the wall, which leads to a decrease of the Reynolds stresses and turbulence production and so to the overall drag reduction.

On-off pumping for drag reduction in a turbulent channel flow

Abstract:We show that the energy required by a turbulent flow to displace a given amount of fluid through a straight duct in a given time interval can be reduced by modulating in time the pumping power. The control strategy is hybrid: it is passive, as it requires neither a control system nor control energy, but it manipulates how pumping energy is delivered to the system (as in active techniques) to increase the pumping efficiency. Our control employs a temporally periodic pumping pattern, where a short and intense acceleration (in which the pumping system is on) followed by a longer deceleration (in which the pumping system is off) makes the flow alternately visit a quasi-laminar and a turbulent state. The computational study is for a plane channel flow, and employs direct numerical simulations, which present specific computational challenges, for example the highly varying instantaneous value of the Reynolds number, and the importance of discretisation effects. Particular care is devoted to a meaningful definition of drag reduction in the present context. The ability of the forcing to yield significant savings is demonstrated. Since only a small portion of the parameter space is investigated, the best performance of the control technique remains to be assessed.

Abstract:We perform direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow with a lubricated micro-grooved surface to investigate the effects of this surface on the slip characteristics at the interface and the friction drag. The interface between water and lubricant is assumed to be flat, i.e. the surface-tension effect is neglected. The solid substrate, where a lubricant is infused, is composed of straight longitudinal grooves. The flow rate of water inside the channel is maintained constant, and a lubricant layer under the interface is shear driven by the turbulent water flow above. A turbulent channel flow with a superhydrophobic (i.e. air-lubricated) surface having the same solid substrate configuration is also simulated for comparison. The results show that the drag reduction with the liquid-infused surface highly depends on the lubricant viscosity as well as the groove width and aspect ratio. The amounts of drag reduction with the liquid-infused surfaces are not as good as those with superhydrophobic surfaces, but are still meaningfully large. For instance, the maximum drag reduction by the heptane-infused surface is approximately 13 % for a rectangular groove whose spanwise width and depth in wall units are 12 and 14.4, respectively, whereas a superhydrophobic surface with the same geometry results in a drag reduction of 21 %. The mean slip length normalized by the viscosity ratio and groove depth depends on the groove aspect ratio. The ratio of fluctuating spanwise slip length to the streamwise one is between 0.25 (ideal surface without groove structures) and 1 (i.e. isotropic slip), indicating that the slip is anisotropic. Using the Stokes flow assumption, the effective streamwise and spanwise slip lengths are expressed as a function of groove geometric parameters and lubricant viscosity. We also suggest a predictive model for drag reduction with the heptane-lubricated surface by combining the predicted effective slip lengths with the drag reduction formula used for riblets (Luchini et al. , J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 228, 1991, pp. 87–109). The predicted drag reductions are in good agreements with those from the present and previous direct numerical simulations.

An energy-efficient pathway to turbulent drag reduction

Abstract:Simulations and experiments at low Reynolds numbers have suggested that skin-friction drag generated by turbulent fluid flow over a surface can be decreased by oscillatory motion in the surface, with the amount of drag reduction predicted to decline with increasing Reynolds number. Here, we report direct measurements of substantial drag reduction achieved by using spanwise surface oscillations at high friction Reynolds numbers ([Formula: see text]) up to 12,800. The drag reduction occurs via two distinct physical pathways. The first pathway, as studied previously, involves actuating the surface at frequencies comparable to those of the small-scale eddies that dominate turbulence near the surface. We show that this strategy leads to drag reduction levels up to 25% at [Formula: see text] = 6,000, but with a power cost that exceeds any drag-reduction savings. The second pathway is new, and it involves actuation at frequencies comparable to those of the large-scale eddies farther from the surface. This alternate pathway produces drag reduction of 13% at [Formula: see text] = 12,800. It requires significantly less power and the drag reduction grows with Reynolds number, thereby opening up potential new avenues for reducing fuel consumption by transport vehicles and increasing power generation by wind turbines.
Turbulent skin-friction drag reduction via spanwise forcing at high Reynolds number

Abstract:We address the Reynolds-number dependence of the turbulent skin-friction drag reduction induced by streamwise-travelling waves of spanwise wall oscillations. The study relies on direct numerical simulations of drag-reduced flows in a plane open channel at friction Reynolds numbers in the range $1000 \le Re_\tau \le 6000$, which is the widest range considered so far in simulations with spanwise forcing. Our results corroborate the validity of the predictive model proposed by Gatti & Quadrio, J. Fluid Mech. (2016): regardless of the control parameters, the drag reduction decreases monotonically with $Re$, at a rate that depends on the drag reduction itself and on the skin-friction of the uncontrolled flow. We do not find evidence in support of the results of Marusic et al., Nat. Comm. (2021), which instead report by experiments an increase of the drag reduction with $Re$ in turbulent boundary layers, for control parameters that target low-frequency, outer-scaled motions. Possible explanations for this discrepancy are provided, including obvious differences between open channel flows and boundary layers, and possible limitations of laboratory experiments.
