Abstract:Ni‐Ti alloys have been widely applied in various fields due to their good biocompatibility and special shape memory function. To date, in order to make Ni‐Ti alloy ferromagnetic, the commonly used method is to add Fe or Ni particles to Ni‐Ti alloy. Within our knowledge, no reports at this stage have reported that Ni‐Ti alloys can possess ferromagnetism without adding magnetic particles. In the first half of the paper, we first report a process that can produce ferromagnetism in Ni‐Ti alloys and explain the principle of the new process according to the Ni‐Ti binary phase diagram. On the other hand, magnetic micro‐robots have received widespread attention, since they can be wirelessly controlled by an external magnetic field and enter human body cavities, which cannot be easily reached by medical devices. As an emerging manufacturing technology, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology makes it possible to design arbitrarily shaped Ni‐Ti alloys and manufacture miniature Ni‐Ti alloys. The remainder of the article introduces a type of thermally responsive micro‐robot, which is fabricated by LPBF technology and combined with this new Ni‐Ti alloy phenomenon. A series of experiments were performed to confirm that these thermally responsive micro‐robots have the ability to transport cargo and target delivery under the control of an external magnetic field. The combination of this new Ni‐Ti alloy phenomenon and LPBF technology may provide a new avenue for manufacturing magnetic micro‐robots. This paper reports a process for producing ferromagnetism in Ni‐Ti alloys in the first time, and provides a reasonable explanation for this new process according to the binary phase diagram of Ni‐Ti alloy. The successful fabrication of a type of magnetic thermally responsive micro‐robot using LPBF technology combined with this new Ni‐Ti alloy phenomenon is then described. This article is protected by copyright.
