Being modern in China. A western cultural analysis of modernity, tradition and schooling in China today

Abstract:Reviewed by John Lowe, Charlene Tan and Ting-Hong WongIf one is interested in studying 'social change' – almost however one interprets that broad phrase – then China is a magnet to researchers. What makes it so is not only the extent of the social change that is on offer to the interested observer, but also, and perhaps more significantly, the speed at which change has taken and is taking place here. Living in China and engaging with 'life as it is lived' on a daily – if often vicarious – basis, it is easy to feel that 'ways of life' are changing at a rate that is almost sensible. Add to this observation of rapid change the claim widely made by various Chinese authorities – and commonly repeated to me in student essays – that China is 'unique' in its 5000-year cultural continuity; then similarly note the frequent, insistent references one meets to the need to recognise the influences of a philosopher-teacher from 2500 years ago if one is to 'understand' contemporary China. With this mix of cultural change and continuity the study of change in Chinese society becomes not just interesting but enigmatic. The relationships and tensions that are present in all societies, between cultural change and cultural continuity, between what we make of our present daily lives and what we take in from the past in that making process beg to be taken as being particularly significant in China (and woe betide any naïve Western researcher who does not accept this). Or do they? Should we also be questioning how much of what constitutes China and what is happening there is as 'unique' as Chinese authorities' sources claim – and my students and acquaintances like to echo. Can we approach a study of China by asking whether the uniqueness of China is any more than that of any country or culture? Should we take a 'particularist' or 'universalist' view of China, its social arrangements and its culture? As Willis is aware, and seems to be wary of, the former can lead to 'exoticism' and Orientalism in our accounts; the latter can take us to other extremes of dismissing differences as merely local matters within a generalized story of human 'progress'. We might indeed ask whether the use of concepts of 'the modern' and of 'modernity' as a framework for 'progress' might lead us in the latter direction: are they tools of an homogenizing approach to cultural analysis?
