Abstract:The concerns over the unsustainable technology driven economies, environmental threats and continuously reducing petroleum feedstock have stimulated the research in green, biodegradable and naturally available resources. Within this context, lignin being the second most abundant material after cellulose is considered as one of the promising alternatives because of its unique and versatile structure. However, despite being one of the highly available materials, lignin has not found its place in economic policies and almost deliberated as non-commercialised waste product. In the recent years, extensive efforts have been employed for the development of lignin as active precursor for carbon fiber (CF) manufacturing. The CF is produced from expensive and unsustainable polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor, and lignin can offer low-cost environmentally friendly alternative precursor. CF manufacturing from lignin requires unique set of processing methods including lignin isolation/extraction, purification, fibre spinning, stabilisation and carbonisation. The current review provides detailed insight in the lignin derived CF and carbon nanofiber (CNF) manufacturing process and their application. The review also intends to provide the major challenges ahead for industrialisation of lignin as established CF precursor. Lignin is yet to effectively penetrates the CF market but working on standardising its product, well organised cost analysis at various stages of production, development of low-cost processing technique could pave the way for further adoption of carbon-based materials.
