Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) has high strength, high modulus, and excellent high-temperature resistance and chemical stability; therefore, it is used in diverse fields. However, due to the lack of active functional groups on the surface of CF and surface defects generated during the preparation of CF, the wettability of the fiber surface is poor, which seriously affects the interface performance between the fiber and a resin matrix. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on the surface modification of CF. In this review, studies on the surface modification of CF are summarized, including the various methods utilized, such as dry modification, wet modification, and nanomodification, as well as their current application status. As interest in this material increases, high-performance CFs will likely play an important role in many fields in the future.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the research progress on surface modification methods of carbon fibers (CF). Carbon fibers possess high strength, high modulus, and excellent high-temperature and chemical stability, making them widely applicable in various fields. However, due to the lack of active functional groups on the surface of carbon fibers and the surface defects generated during the preparation process, their surface wettability is poor, which severely affects the interfacial performance between carbon fibers and resin matrices. To address this issue, researchers have conducted extensive studies on the surface modification of carbon fibers. The paper summarizes various modification methods, including dry modification, wet modification, and nano-modification. These methods aim to increase the number of active sites on the carbon fiber surface or alter its microstructure to enhance the bonding strength between the fibers and the resin. Specifically: - **Acid treatment**: Oxidizing the carbon fiber surface by controlling factors such as reaction temperature and time to increase surface roughness. - **Electrochemical modification**: Using carbon fibers as anodes to perform oxidation treatment under the action of an electrolyte. - **Polymer grafting**: Fixing small molecules or polymers on the carbon fiber surface through methods such as electrochemical grafting. - **Plasma treatment**: Introducing chemically active groups on the carbon fiber surface using plasma technology. - **Nano-modification**: Improving the microstructure of the carbon fiber surface by introducing nano-fillers (such as carbon nanotubes, nano-clay, etc.). The paper also discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and applications of different modification methods and experimentally verifies the effects of various modification methods. Overall, the paper aims to improve the overall performance of carbon fiber composites by enhancing the surface properties of carbon fibers.
