Abstract:This study presents the results of a numerical simulation of two horizontal flows of miscible magnetic and non-magnetic fluids at low Reynolds numbers in a vertical uniform magnetic field. The problem is solved by taking into account the dependence of the viscosity and magnetization of the fluid on the concentration of the magnetic phase, and the dependence of the magnetic field on the concentration. Four flow modes are found: the diffusion mixing mode with a flat diffusion front, the wave mode and two different plug flow modes. In the first of them, the growing wave instability forms the plugs, whereas in the second, the growing magnetostatic instability does. A combination of dimensionless criteria is found that determines the transition from one mode to another. The dependences of the phase velocity of the waves on the diffusion front and the period of the oscillations of the front near the point of the confluence of the two flows on dimensionless criteria are found.

Abstract:The simultaneous effect of magnetic and electric fields on ferrofluids is of fundamental interest, and may have a number of promising nontrivial applications. We experimentally investigate the interfacial surface instability in a two-layer system of liquids in which the lower layer is presented by a conducting ferrofluid and the upper layer by a dielectric nonmagnetic liquid. The interfacial instability is initiated as a result of the joint action of magnetic and electric fields perpendicular to the boundary. The values of the critical magnetic field strength and electric voltage are measured, and the relationship between these values is demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract We study magnetically induced interfacial instability of a thin ferrofluid film subjected to an applied uniform magnetic field and covered by a non-magnetizable passive gas. Governing equations are derived using the long-wave approximation of the coupled static Maxwell and Stokes equations. The contact angle is imposed via a disjoining/conjoining pressure model. Numerical simulations show the patterning resulting from unstable perturbations and dewetting of the ferrofluid film. We find that the subtle competition between the applied field and the van der Waals induced dewetting determines the appearance of satellite droplets. The results suggest a new route for generating self-assembled ferrofluid droplets from a thin film using an external magnetic field. An axisymmetric droplet on a surface is also studied, and we demonstrate the deformation of the droplet into a spiked cone, in agreement with experimental findings.

Abstract:Abstract Theoretically, the velocity distributions of the sealed liquid and magnetic fluid are studied. The velocity of the sealed liquid and magnetic fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of the radius. The instability of the interface between magnetic fluid and the sealed liquid is studied. Experimentally, when the rotating speed of the shaft increases, magnetic fluid and the sealed liquid are mixed with each other, and the stability of the interface between magnetic fluid and the sealed liquid is destroyed. The higher the rotational speed of the shaft is, the shorter the time for the interface to remain stable is.

Abstract:Stability of the surface of a magnetic fluid under a horizontal non-uniform alternating magnetic field is investigated experimentally and analytically. Several modes of interfacial waves of the same frequency as that of the applied magnetic field are observed, and the critical strength of the magnetic field at each frequency were obtained. The linear stability theory shows that the system is destabilized with the increase in the magnetic susceptibility and the gradient of the magnetic field, which is in accord with the experimental result. The iron nitride magnetic fluid, which is newly developed and has very high susceptibility and magnetization, was tested under the same condition as W-35 and HC-50. The small disturbance occurred even at very weak magnetic field, and the steady wave was formed in the uniform magnetic field.
The Disintegration of Magnetic Fluid Layer on Liquid and Solid Substrates in Vertical Magnetic Field

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to experimentally study the process of decomposition of a horizontal layer of a magnetic fluid lying on a liquid non-wettable substrate into an ordered system of drops under the influence of a vertical magnetic field. Methods. In the experiment, the studied liquids in the form of a two-layer system filling a cylindrical glass cuvette were placed on a horizontal platform in the center of the Helmholtz coils connected to a direct current source. The development of magnetic fluid layer free surface instability was monitored using a high-speed digital video camera installed at the top of the coil system. Results. The dependence of the critical strength of the magnetic field on the thickness of the torn layer and the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetic fluid is determined. The obtained experimental data are compared with the results of existing theoretical studies of the instability of the magnetic fluid layer. Compared to the case of a solid substrate, the rupture of the magnetic fluid layer on a liquid substrate occurred at lower values of the critical field strength. In this case, the development of instability of the free surface magnetic fluid layer on a solid substrate occurs at field strengths twice as high as the instability strength of the interface of the layer on a liquid substrate. Conclusion. The use of a liquid substrate makes it possible to break such layers of the magnetic fluid, the deformation of which on a solid substrate is limited only by a periodic perturbation of the surface. The magnitude of the critical strength leading to the disintegration of a continuous magnetic fluid layer on a liquid substrate increases with increasing thickness of this layer. An increase in the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetic fluid leads to a decrease in the critical field strength.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids were historically the first active nano-dispersion material. Despite over half a century of research, interest in these nano-objects continues to grow every year. This is due to the impressive development of nanotechnology, the synthesis of nanoscale structures, and surface-active systems. The unique combination of fluidity and magnetic response allows magnetic fluids to be used in engineering devices and biomedical applications. In this review, experimental results and fundamental theoretical approaches are systematized to predict the micro- and macroscopic behavior of magnetic fluid systems under different external influences. The article serves as working material for both experienced scientists in the field of magnetic fluids and novice specialists who are just beginning to investigate this topic.

Abstract:The magnetic field induced instability patterns have been observed in an undercooled immiscible Co–Cu alloy by an in situ magnetization measurement of the supercooled alloy melt. With the increase in magnetic field intensity and gradient, the undercooled immiscible melt experienced a transition from a core-shell structure to a layered structure at a lower field intensity and then a typical normal field instability pattern with the applied higher magnetic field gradient. Due to the different magnetic response ability of the separated phases in the presence of a magnetic field gradient, the transition of the morphology was complex, and its detailed investigations can provide important insight for better understanding of the ferrofluid and the creation of functional material. Furthermore, under an appropriate field gradient condition, it can achieve the subtle transitions between the diverse morphologies in an immiscible alloy.

Abstract:A magnetic field gradient was used to draw down a low density paramagnetic fluid below a more dense fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell. On turning off the field a Rayleigh-Taylor instability was observed in situ, and the growth of the most unstable wave vector was measured versus time. A theory for the instability that permits different viscosities for two immiscible fluids was developed, and good agreement was found with the experimental results. The technique of magnetic levitation promises to broaden significantly the accessible parameter space of gravitational interfacial instability experiments.
Convective Instability of Magnetized Ferrofluids: Influence of Magnetophoresis and Soret Effect

Abstract:Convective instability in a ferrofluid layer heated from below or from above in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated theoretically. Convection is caused by a magnetic mechanism based on the temperature and concentration dependence of magnetization. An imposed temperature gradient establishes (by the Soret effect) a concentration gradient of magnetic particles of which the ferrofluid is composed. Both these gradients cause a spatial variation in magnetization, which induces a gradient of magnetic field intensity within the fluid layer. The field gradient induces in its turn an additional redistribution of magnetic grains due to magnetophoresis. Resulting self-consistent magnetic force tries to mix the fluid. A linear stability analysis predicts oscillatory instability in a certain region of the magnetic field strength and the fluid parameters. The instability owes magneto- and thermophoresis its origin: were the particle diffusion not operative, then only stationary instability would occur. A discovery of predicted convective oscillations is expected in ferrofluid layers about 1 mm thick, where the buoyancy mechanism is negligible and the characteristic diffusion time is not too long.

Abstract:In this study, the Rosensweig instability at the interface between ferrofluids and other immiscible fluids is systematically studied. Stable water based ferrofluids with saturated magnetization as high as 25.4 kA/m are successfully synthesized. The surface tension, density and viscosity of water based ferrofluids used in this study are systematically and scientifically studied. Concentrated coils magnetic field generator is constructed to evaluate the experimental results of Rosensweig instability at the interface between ferrofluids and immiscible fluids. Combined with the theoretical results, the simulation results are obtained from our model to evaluate the Rosensweig instability at the interfaces. The well accordance between experimental results and the theoretical simulation results indicates that the Rosensweig instability is easily generating at interfaces between ferrofluids and oils than the interfaces between ferrofluids and air. This result could be attributed to the surface tension and buoyance of liquids on the ferrofluids.

Abstract:The stability of a shear flow imposed along a diffusive interface that separates two miscible liquids (a heavier liquid lies underneath) is studied using direct numerical simulations. The phase-field approach is employed for description of a thermo- and hydrodynamic evolution of a heterogeneous binary mixture. The approach takes into account the dynamic interfacial stresses at a miscible interface and uses the extended Fick's law for setting the diffusion transport (the diffusion flux is proportional to the gradient of chemical potential). The shear flow is unstable to two kinds of instabilities: (1) the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, with an immovable vortex formed in the middle of an interface (in the vertical direction) and (2) the Holmboe instability, with traveling waves along the interfacial boundary. The development of the Holmboe instability results in a stronger enhancement of molecular mixing between the mixture components. Earlier, the boundaries of these instabilities were determined using the linear stability analysis and employing the concept of a "frozen interface." In the current work, through the solution of full equations, we obtain the stability boundaries for several sets of governing parameters, showing a greater variety of the possible shapes of the stability diagrams. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability always occurs at lower gravity effects (lower density contrasts), while the Holmboe instability occurs when gravity is stronger. We show that for some parameters these two instabilities are separated by a zone where the shear flow is stable, and this zone disappears for the other sets of parameters.

Abstract:Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) occurs when a shock wave impulsively accelerates a perturbed density interface between different fluids. The present work investigates the suppression of RMI of double interfaces in terms of linear analysis in cylindrical geometry. An exponential increase/decrease in a growth rate is related to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) that occurs without a magnetic field as the lighter fluid penetrates the heavier one. The research program of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is one of the advanced applications where fluid mixing is the main mechanize of producing energy. The investigations represent the effects of different Atwood numbers or magnetic strengths on the suppression of the instabilities. Three different cases are considered with the hydrodynamics (HD) and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In MHD case, the instability's growth rate reduces proportion to the Atwood ratios or the strength of the magnetic field. Two waves are interfering and running parallel and anti-parallel to the interfaces and transport the generated vorticity at the interfaces, causing the perturbed interfaces' growth rate to oscillate in time, which is the essential suppression mechanism.

Magnetically induced interfacial instabilities in a ferrofluid annulus

Abstract:We investigate the flow of a viscous ferrofluid annulus surrounded by two nonmagnetic fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell when subjected to an external radial magnetic field. The interfacial pattern formation dynamics of the system is determined by the interplay of magnetic and surface tension forces acting on the inner and outer boundaries of the annulus, favoring the coupling of the disjoint interfaces. Mode-coupling analysis is employed to examine both linear and weakly nonlinear stages of the flow. Linear stability analysis indicates that the trailing and leading annular boundaries are coupled already at the linear regime, revealing that perturbations arising in the outer interface may induce the emergence of deformed structures in the inner boundary. Moreover, second-order weakly nonlinear analysis is utilized to identify key nonlinear morphological features of the ferrofluid annulus. Our theoretical results show that linear, n-fold symmetric annular patterns having rounded edges are replaced by nonlinear polygonal-like shapes, presenting fairly sharp fingers. It is found that, as opposed to the linear patterns, the nonlinear peaky structures reach a stationary state, characterized by a growth saturation process induced by nonlinear effects. Furthermore, the response of the ferrofluid ring to changes in the thickness of the annulus, in the relative strength of magnetic and surface tensions forces, as well as in the magnetic susceptibility of the ferrofluid material, are also discussed.
How gravity stabilises instability: the case of magnetic micro-convection

Abstract:Finding solutions for better mixing in microfluidics remains an important challenge, including understanding fundamental aspects of these processes. Here we investigate the magnetic micro-convection on water and miscible magnetic fluid interface in a vertical microfluidic chip to understand what is the role of gravity, as fluids have different densities. Our model is reduced to two dimensionless quantities - magnetic and gravitational Rayleigh numbers. Numerical simulation results show that static magnetic field generate rich dynamics. This is confirmed quantitatively with careful experiments in initially stagnant fluids. We also show that the length of resulting mixing is limited by gravity. For this we construct a master curve, exploiting the measurements of critical field. A three-fluid layer model and linear stability analysis on its interfaces allows us to explain the limitation mechanism. Our results can help in the development of instability based micromixers.

Abstract:Forming a stable ferrofluid and non-magnetic interface in a microchannel is essential for biomedical applications with two miscible aqueous solutions. Here, we report the interface profile and its instability of aqueous ferrofluid and water co-flow in a microchannel under the influence of a magnetic field. The scaling law related to diffusion width and dimensionless Pe number is introduced by solving the momentum and diffusion equation and combining the experimental results. It is found that the dimensionless number of diffusion width δ/h ∝ X/Peα , when core flow concentration cf , residual magnetic flux density Br, sheath flow and core flow ratio Qw /Qf , and core flow velocity Qf are changed, α is 0.633–1.071, α ∝ Qβ , β = −0.059,0.147, 0.019 and −0.101, respectively. Altering the core flow velocity and magnetic field intensity can quickly impact the interface's stability by improving the transport efficiency by 32.9 % and counteracting the impacts of material diffusion by 51.8 %, respectively. Elevating the proportion of sheath flow to core flow and magnetic field will impede the diffusion of core flow. This will result in a drop of 11.9 % in the magnetic convection effect and a 20.8 % counteraction of material diffusion effects.

Abstract:Research on the interfacial instability of two-phase systems can help in gaining a better understanding of various hydrodynamic instabilities in nature. However, owing to the nonlinear and complex spatiotemporal dynamics of the unstable interface, the instability is challenging to control and suppress. This paper presents a novel interfacial instability of the magnetic microswarm induced by the competition between the destabilizing effect of magnetic field and the stabilizing effect of acoustic field. The physics underlying this novel phenomenon is discussed by analyzing the contributions of the external fields. Unlike previous studies, this study demonstrates that the instability is independent of the interfacial force or diffusion effect and can persist without dissipation over time. The manipulation of the unstable interface is further achieved by adjusting the configuration of the magneto-acoustic system. This approach can be used in thermal encoding metamaterials and has great potential applications in systems where the instability is detrimental.

Abstract:The Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a magnetic fluid superimposed on a non-magnetic liquid of lower density may be suppressed with the help of a spatially homogeneous magnetic field rotating in the plane of the undisturbed interface. Starting from the complete set of Navier-Stokes equations for both liquids a Floquet analysis is performed which consistently takes into account the viscosities of the fluids. Using experimentally relevant values of the parameters we suggest to use this stabilization mechanism to provide controlled initial conditions for an experimental investigation of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Abstract:Magnetic field can generate interface instability when some liquids are put close to magnetic field. A well-known interface instability is called Rosensweig instability or normal field instability. Here we report that pure liquid Co can be highly undercooled close to its Curie temperature in strong magnetic field with very high magnetization and exhibiting unique morphology instability called the normal field instability. To obtain such unique instability pattern, the sample size, undercooling and magnetic field intensity need fulfill certain condition. In the present study, we have studied the required condition for obtaining normal field instability. The magnetization of the undercooled liquid Co is measured in a wide temperature range with different magnetic field intensities and calculated as a function of undercooling and field intensity. The critical size and critical magnetization for the normal field instability are calculated with the changing temperature and field intensity. Then the required conditions including the critical size, the minimum undercooling and field intensity for the existence of the instability pattern formation are determined.
