Abstract:The existence of Marangoni flow in an evaporating pure water drop has remained an open question. In this study, we report the occurrence of Marangoni convection within a water drop resting on a copper rod as it evaporates into the air. Through careful preparation of the test liquid suspension, we have observed convective structures inside the water drop. We also developed a mathematical model representing the evaporation system and solved it numerically to further strengthen support for the experimental data. Our study is different from previous studies on droplet evaporation in the sense that we allowed the droplet to evaporate spontaneously in the normal laboratory condition without heating the substrate. The substrate was neither externally heated nor did radiation from the illumination light stimulate a Marangoni flow. The velocities in the midsection of the droplet were measured using particle tracking velocimetry in both the sessile and pendant configurations. The typical velocities in the center of the droplet were found to be 10 mm/s experimentally and even higher velocities (about double that) were predicted by the mathematical model. This high value stands out among the thermocapillary-driven flows observed in an autonomously evaporated drop of water under ambient conditions.
Marangoni convection instability in a sessile droplet with low volatility on heated substrate

Abstract:In order to investigate Marangoni convection in a sessile droplet on heated substrate, a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out in a wide range of Marangoni number. A low volatile silicone oil is adopted and the effect of evaporation is neglected. Bénard-Marangoni convection and thermocapillary convection may coexist in droplet because of its curve surface. When Marangoni number is low the flow is steady axisymmetric thermocapillary convection whereas the flow becomes to be asymmetric and loses its stability and Hopf bifurcation occurs when Marangoni number high. The oscillatory transition convection, steady Bénard-Marangoni convection and irregular oscillatory Bénard-Marangoni convection appear in sequence with increasing Marangoni number. The characteristics of each kind of convection modes are described and the critical Marangoni numbers for the incipience of them are determined in a wide range of contact angles. One of the most interesting phenomenon is that the shape of the Bénard-Marangoni convection cell in sessile droplet is circular, which is different from that of classical hexagonal cell in flat layer. With increasing contact angle, the critical Marangoni number for the onset of convection instabilities first decreases and then increases. Critical cell number of the steady Bénard-Marangoni convection keeps on only one for contact angle less than 15° whereas it increases sharply after angle lager than 15°. The numerical results are qualitatively verified by experiment.

Evaporating sessile droplets: solutal Marangoni effects overwhelm thermal Marangoni flow

Abstract:When an evaporating water droplet is deposited on a thermally conductive substrate, the minimum temperature will be at the apex due to evaporative cooling. Consequently, density and surface tension gradients emerge within the droplet and at the droplet-gas interface, giving rise to competing flows from, respectively, the apex towards the contact line (thermal-buoyancy-driven flow) and the other way around (thermal Marangoni flow). In small droplets with a diameter below the capillary length, the thermal Marangoni effects are expected to dominate over thermal buoyancy ("thermal Rayleigh") effects. However, contrary to these theoretical predictions, our experiments mostly show a dominant circulation from the apex towards the contact line, indicating a prevailing of thermal Rayleigh convection. Furthermore, our experiments often show an unexpected asymmetric flow that persisted for several minutes. We hypothesise that a tiny amount of contaminants, commonly encountered in experiments with water/air interfaces, act as surfactants and counteract the thermal surface tension gradients at the interface and thereby promote the dominance of Rayleigh convection. Our finite element numerical simulations demonstrate that, under our specified experimental conditions, a mere 0.5% reduction in the static surface tension caused by surfactants leads to a reversal in the flow direction, compared to the theoretical prediction without contaminants. Additionally, we investigate the linear stability of the axisymmetric solutions, revealing that the presence of surfactants also affects the axial symmetry of the flow.

Abstract:Due to continuous variation of contact angle of a sessile droplet during evaporation at constant contact line mode, the behaviors of Marangoni convection inside the droplet would inevitably vary with evaporation. In order to understand these behaviors, the Marangoni convection instability patterns and their transition phenomena in a sessile droplet during evaporation are investigated through a series of experiments. For easily volatile droplet of methanol the hydrothermal waves occur firstly near the three-phase contact line and then they are transformed to Bénard-Marangoni cells when the contact angle is lower than a critical value. The hydrothermal waves finally disappear with only Bénard-Marangoni cells remaining in the droplet when the contact angle is below the second threshold. For highly volatile droplet of R-113 the stationary longitudinal rolls appear firstly and then they are replaced by the Bénard-Marangoni cells. The basic linear flow in R-113 droplet caused by fast evaporation is a crucial reason to form the stationary longitudinal rolls in it. The critical conditions for the transitions between these kinds of the Marangoni convection instability patterns are determined and the underlying mechanisms of these transition phenomena are analyzed carefully.

Modeling unsteady Bénard-Marangoni instabilities in drying volatile droplets on a heated substrate

Abstract:We study unsteady internal flows in a sessile droplet of capillary size evaporating in constant contact line mode on a heated substrate. Three-dimensional simulations of internal flows in evaporating droplets of ethanol and silicone oil have been carried out. For describing the Marangoni flows we find it necessary to account for the diffusion of vapor in air, the thermal conduction in all three phases and thermal radiation. The equations have been solved numerically by finite element method using ANSYS Fluent. As a result of the simulations, the nonstationary behavior of Bénard-Marangoni (BM) instabilities is obtained. At the first stage, a flower structure of BM cells near the triple line emerge. For smaller contact angles, the cells grow in size and occupy the central region of the droplet surface. Being closely connected with recent experimental and theoretical studies, the results obtained help to analyze and resolve the associated issues.

Abstract:Evaporation dynamics of small sessile water droplets under microgravity conditions is investigated numerically. The water-air interface is free, and the surrounding air is assumed to be quasisteady. The droplet is described by Navier-Stokes and heat equations and its surrounding water/air gaseous phase with Laplace equation. In the thermodynamic conditions of the simulations presented herein, the evaporative mass flow is nonlinear. It shows a minimum that indicates the existence of qualitative changes in the evaporative regimes although the droplet is sessile. Due to temperature gradients on the free interface, Marangoni motion occurs and generates inside the droplet convection cells that furthermore exhibit small fluctuating motion as evaporation goes on.

Abstract:Evaporation of binary mixture droplets (BMDs) is a ubiquitous natural phenomenon with numerous industrial applications. In this study, a theoretical model of BMD evaporation under forced convection is established by considering the influence of evaporative cooling, thermal and Marangoni effects, convection, and a Stefan flow. The dynamic evaporation of a binary ethanol–water droplet on a heated substrate is simulated, and the internal and external flow structures of the droplets and their interactions are investigated. The influence of temperature-dependent physical properties on the evaporation dynamics is analyzed, and the effect of the forced convection intensity on the exclusion distance and Marangoni instability is explored. Our findings reveal that, during the stable flow stage, a single vortex flow pattern prevails, characterized by a circulating zone with low ethanol concentration within the droplets. However, in the Marangoni instability-driven flow (MIF) stage, a complex multi-vortex flow appears inside the droplets, with a heterogeneous ethanol distribution. Under the action of the Stefan flow, external forced convection cannot directly affect the flow inside the droplets through viscous shear but indirectly impacts the internal flow through heat and mass transfer. The temperature-dependence of physical properties significantly influences the internal flow and delays the onset of the MIF stage. Forced convection affects the heat and mass transfer by changing the thickness of the thermal and concentration boundary layers. Compared with BMD evaporation under natural convection, the heat and mass transfer rate are significantly higher under forced convection, particularly in the MIF stage.

Abstract:The fate of the internal fluids after coalescence of droplets is very important and has been investigated rarely. In this paper, we report simulations of mixing processes after coalescence of binary momentum-less droplets by using a front tracking method. Firstly, the validation of the method used here was testified, and then the effects of viscosity of droplets, size ratio and properties of ambient phase on mixing were investigated. The results qualitatively agree well with previous experimental observations.
Marangoni instability in oblate droplets suspended on a circular frame

Abstract:We study theoretically internal flows in a small oblate droplet suspended on the circular frame. Marangoni convection arises due to a vertical temperature gradient across the drop and is driven by the surface tension variations at the free drop interface. Using the analytical basis for the solutions of Stokes equation in coordinates of oblate spheroid we have derived the linearly independent stationary solutions for Marangoni convection in terms of Stokes stream functions. The numerical simulations of the thermocapillary motion in the drops are used to study the onset of the stationary regime. Both analytical and numerical calculations predict the axially-symmetric circulatory convection motion in the drop, the dynamics of which is determined by the magnitude of the temperature gradient across the drop. The analytical solutions for the critical temperature distribution and velocity fields are obtained for the large temperature gradients across the oblate drop. These solutions reveal the lateral separation of the critical and stationary motions within the drops. The critical vortices are localized near the central part of a drop, while the intensive stationary flow is located closer to its butt end. A crossover to the limit of the plane film is studied within the formalism of the stream functions by reducing the droplet ellipticity ratio to zero value. The initial stationary regime for the strongly oblate drops becomes unstable relative to the many-vortex perturbations in analogy with the plane fluid films with free boundaries.

Abstract:Marangoni effect has been observed in many liquids, but its existence in pure water is still a debated problem. In the present work, the Marangoni flow in evaporating water droplets has been observed by using fluorescent nanoparticles. Flow patterns indicate that a stagnation point where the surface flow, the surface tension gradient, and the surface temperature gradient change their directions exists at the droplet surface. The deduced nonmonotonic variation of the droplet surface temperature, which is different from that in some previous works, is explained by a heat transfer model considering the adsorbed thin film of the evaporating liquid droplet. Abstract:The evaporation of multi-component droplets is relevant to various applications but challenging to study due to the complex physicochemical dynamics. Recently, Li (2018) reported evaporation-triggered segregation in 1,2-hexanediol-water binary droplets. In this present work, we added 0.5 wt% silicone oil into the 1,2-hexanediol-water binary solution. This minute silicone oil concentration dramatically modifies the evaporation process as it triggers an early extraction of the 1,2-hexanediol from the mixture. Surprisingly, we observe that the segregation of 1,2-hexanediol forms plumes, rising up from the rim of the sessile droplet towards the apex during the droplet evaporation. By orientating the droplet upside down, i.e., by studying a pendant droplet, the absence of the plumes indicates that the flow structure is induced by buoyancy, which drives a Rayleigh-Taylor instability (i.e., driven by density differences & gravitational acceleration). From micro-PIV measurement, we further prove that the segregation of the non-volatile component (1,2-hexanediol) hinders the evaporation near the contact line, which leads to a suppression of the Marangoni flow in this region. Hence, on long time scales, gravitational effects play the dominant role in the flow structure, rather than Marangoni flows. We compare the measurement of the evaporation rate with the diffusion model of Popov (2005), coupled with Raoult's law and the activity coefficient. This comparison indeed confirms that the silicone-oil-triggered segregation of the non-volatile 1,2-hexanediol significantly delays the evaporation. With an extended diffusion model, in which the influence of the segregation has been implemented, the evaporation can be well described.

Abstract:Several dynamical stages of the Marangoni convection of an evaporating sessile drop are obtained. We jointly take into account the hydrodynamics of an evaporating sessile drop, effects of the thermal conduction in the drop and the diffusion of vapor in air. The stages are characterized by different number of vortices in the drop and the spatial location of vortices. During the early stage the array of vortices arises near a surface of the drop and induces a non-monotonic spatial distribution of the temperature over the drop surface. The number of near-surface vortices in the drop is controlled by the Marangoni cell size, which is calculated similar to that given by Pearson for flat fluid layers. The number of vortices quickly decreases with time, resulting in three bulk vortices in the intermediate stage. The vortex structure finally evolves into the single convection vortex in the drop, existing during about 1/2 of the evaporation time.

Abstract:Rayleigh-Bénard-Marangoni (RBM) convection in an aqueous droplet during the mass transfer process of acetic acid (solute) from the droplet to the butyl acetate in a vertical slit are investigated in the parallel visualization experiments via adopting the DPIV method and the Schlieren method. The real-time RBM convection structures are observed and quantitatively analyzed in details. The influence of the initial solute concentration (i.e., initial Marangoni number (Ma0) and initial Rayleigh-Bénard number (Ra0)) in the droplet on the RBM convection characteristics, mass transfer performance and droplet morphology are studied. The results indicate that the RBM convection in the droplet is determined by the competition between the buoyancy/gravity and interface gradient during the mass transfer process, which includes three main modes, i.e., Marangoni effect dominant mode (MEDM) characterized by some counter-rotating small vortices, transition mode (TM) characterized by several small co-rotating vortices, and Rayleigh-Bénard effect dominant mode (REDM) characterized by two large counter-rotating vortices. When Ma0 ≥ 0.816 × 107, MEDM, TM and REDM appear successively during the mass transfer process and MEDM tends to disappear when Ma0 ≤ 0.719 × 107. Especially, only REDM occurs at Ma0 ≤ 0.627 × 107. The REDM convection tends to stabilize fluid convection in the droplet while the MEDM convection makes the fluid flow turbulent. Owing to the downward fluid flow caused by gravity and interfacial tension gradient caused by the local high solute concentration for the REDM and TM convection, the shrinking of the droplet top is faster than the other parts, which induces the faster droplet shrinking in the vertical direction than that in the horizontal direction during the mass transfer process.

Evaporation of a Sessile Colloidal Water-Glycerol Droplet: Marangoni Ring Formation

Abstract:The transport and aggregation of particles in suspensions is an important process in many physicochemical and industrial processes. In this work, we study the transport of particles in an evaporating binary droplet. Surprisingly, the accumulation of particles occurs not only at the contact line (due to the coffee-stain effect) or at the solid substrate (due to sedimentation) but also at a particular radial position near the liquid-air interface, forming a "ring", which we term as the Marangoni ring. The formation of this ring is primarily attributed to the solutal Marangoni flow triggered by the evaporation dynamics of the water-glycerol droplet. Experiments and simulations show fair agreement in the volume evolution and the general structure of the solutal Marangoni flow, that is, the Marangoni vortex. Experiments show that the location of the Marangoni ring is strongly correlated with the Marangoni vortex. However, finite element numerical simulations fail to describe the particle distribution seen in the experiments. Interestingly, the particles not only accumulate to form the Marangoni ring but also assemble as colloidal crystals close to the liquid-air interface, yielding iridescence. The formation of the colloidal crystals in the experiments is strong evidence that non-hydrodynamic interactions, which are not represented in the simulations, also play a significant role in our system.
Numerical study of the Marangoni effect induced by soluble surfactants and solute based on rising droplets

Abstract:In this study, we present a numerical investigation into the phenomenon of rising droplets in immiscible fluids, focusing on the Marangoni effect induced by both solute and a combination of solute and soluble surfactants. We meticulously examine the interfacial behaviors of pure solute droplets and mixed droplets, with a particular interest on the intricate interplay among interfacial concentration, interfacial tension, Marangoni stress, and Marangoni convection. Our investigation provides insight into the influence of key physicochemical parameters, such as viscosity, diffusion coefficient, partition coefficient, and interfacial tension gradient, on the Marangoni instability. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive parametric exploration of the impact of dimensionless numbers such as the Langmuir number (La), the Damkohler number (Da), the Peclet number (Pe), and the elasticity number β on the stabilizing efficacy of surfactants. The research findings underscore the effectiveness of our numerical method in capturing the distinctive two-step acceleration characteristics of pure solute droplets and the stabilizing effect of surfactants on mixed droplets. Notably, our study reveals that the Marangoni instability may manifest even when the viscosity and diffusivity ratios of the two-phase fluids are closely matched. Partition coefficients below unity exhibit only a marginal influence on the re-acceleration time of the droplets. Systems characterized by extremely low interfacial tension gradients tend to exhibit no Marangoni instability. Moreover, an increase in La enhances the stability of mixed droplets, while a significant threshold is identified for Da to affect the stability of mixed droplets. The ascent speed of mixed droplets displays pronounced variation across varying Pe magnitudes. Finally, in scenarios involving a wide-ranging variation in β, mixed droplets transition between the states of pure solute droplets and rigid spheres, revealing a distinct-state transition point.

Marangoni-driven freezing dynamics of supercooled binary droplets

Abstract:Solidification of droplets is of great importance to various technological applications, drawing considerable attention from scientists aiming to unravel the fundamental physical mechanisms. In the case of multicomponent droplets undergoing solidification, the emergence of concentration gradients may trigger significant interfacial flows that dominate the freezing dynamics. Here, we experimentally investigate the fascinating snow-globe freezing dynamics of supercooled ethanol-water droplets. We reveal that these unique freezing dynamics are driven by solidification-induced solutal Marangoni flow within the droplets. We quantitatively characterize the concentration-dependent migration and growth dynamics of ice particles, tightly connecting them to the solutal Marangoni effect and the associated convective heat transfer. Moreover, we show that the final wrapping state of droplets can be modulated by the concentration of ethanol. Our findings may pave the way for novel insights into the physicochemical hydrodynamics of multicomponent liquids undergoing phase transitions.

Abstract:Abstract The condensation and evaporation of binary droplet have been theoretically and numerically investigated. The evaluation of the mole fractions at the droplet surface is based on the model, where a thin, well-stirred liquid film is allowed to mix with the droplet by diffusion. The evaporation of ammonia-water droplet is numerically predicted. The effect of small liquid phase diffusitivies seems to cause the surface composition to differ from the bulk. However, the effect on the evaporation rate is reduced due to coupling with the droplet temperature.

Abstract:Numerical simulations on coalescence of binary equal-sized droplets with surface tension gradients are carried out by using the front tracking method. Mixing process of the fluid from each droplet is investigated. The tangential flow caused by the Marangoni effect and the interface replacement by the fluid with small surface tension coefficient are simulated successfully. Asymmetry caused by the surface tension gradients can generate some extent of mixing within the coalesced droplet. The effects of the surface tension gradients and viscosity on the tangential velocity, replacement time of interface and mixing are investigated.
Dynamics of the interaction of multiple evaporating droplets on compliant substrates

Abstract:The dynamics of the interaction of a system of two thin volatile liquid droplets resting on a soft viscoelastic solid substrate are investigated theoretically. The developed model fully considers the effect of evaporative cooling and the generated Marangoni stresses due to the induced thermal gradients, while also accounting for the effect of the gas phase composition and the diffusion of vapour in the atmosphere of the droplets. Using the framework of lubrication theory, we derive evolution equations for both the droplet profile and the displacement of the elastic solid, which are solved in combination with Laplace's equation for the vapour concentration in the gas phase. A disjoining-pressure/precursor-film approach is used to describe contact-line motion. The evolution equations are solved numerically, using the finite-element method, and we present a thorough parametric analysis to investigate the physical properties and mechanisms that affect the dynamics of droplet interactions. The results show that the droplets interact through both the soft substrate and the gas phase. In the absence of thermocapillary phenomena, the combined effect of non-uniform evaporation due to the increased vapour concentration between the two droplets and elastocapillary phenonema determines whether the drop-drop interaction is attractive or repulsive. The Marangoni stresses suppress droplet attraction at the early stages of the drying process and lead to longer droplet lifetimes. For substrates with intermediate stiffness, the emergence of spontaneous symmetry breaking at late stages of evaporation is found. The rich dynamics of this complex system is explored by constructing a detailed map of the dynamic regimes.

Abstract:For small droplets undergoing phase change, gravity is generally considered negligible. In the case of binary droplets evaporation, convective flows can be induced due to various mechanisms, such as continuity, buoyancy and/or selective evaporation of one of the components. Convection can also be induced by surface tension gradients resulting from concentration variations along the interface. This study presents experimental results of evaporation for binary mixture droplets. We concurrently investigate sessile and pendant droplets to assess gravity's impact on binary droplet evaporation. We examine compositions including, pure butanol, pure methanol, pure water, and 50% per volume mixtures of water-butanol and water-methanol, evaporating in a controlled atmosphere. In the case of water-butanol mixtures, the drops contact line 'depins' during the evaporation process whereas the case of water-methanol mixture, the contact line of the drops remains pinned most of the lifetimes. The analysis of the evaporation dynamics reveals differences in the evaporation of these two mixtures and the effect of orientation (gravity). For water-butanol mixtures the evaporation occurs in four stages linked to preferential evaporation of the more volatile component and the ensuing surface tension gradients. In the case of water-methanol mixtures, contact lines tend to be pinned during most of the lifetimes of drops. The evaporation rate of the mixture is found to be between the ones of the pure components, i.e. water and methanol. The case of sessile drops exhibits a slight enhancement in evaporation rate in the case of the sessile configuration compared to the pendant one for pure water and mixture cases, which is explained by density differences and buoyancy driven flows. Solutal Marangoni flows in the case of water-methanol mixtures are deemed weaker compared to water-butanol ones. The use of the two mixtures allowed to have a good comparison between two cases where solutal-Marangoni effect can be strong (water-butanol) and weak (water- methanol) influence. The densities of the two organic liquids also highlighted gravitational effect due to the large difference in vapor densities.
