Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become a popular element analysis technique because of its real-time multi-element detection and non-damage advantages. However, due to factors such as laser-substance interaction and experimental environment, the measured LIBS spectrum signal contains a continuous background, severely influencing spectrum analysis. In this paper, we proposed a LIBS spectrum baseline correction method based on non-parametric prior penalized least squares (NPPPLS) algorithm. Compared with the traditional Penalized Least Squares (PLS) method, improvements have been made in two aspects. On the one hand, a new weight method with faster convergence is proposed. On the other hand, we combine the Adam algorithm and introduce the RMSE of the baseline correction result at the previous time to constrain the update of the balance parameter, which enables the balance parameter to be adjusted adaptively and no parameter prior is required. Simulation results show that the proposed NPPPLS algorithm can achieve excellent correction results, even with no parametric priors. In addition, the performance of the algorithm is not affected by the initial value of the balance parameter, and the stability and robustness are significantly improved. Finally, we conduct baseline correction of the experimental LIBS spectrum and performed univariate and multivariate analysis. The results show that the quantitative analysis accuracy is improved after baseline correction, and the correlation coefficient R2 of different elements obtained by the extreme learning machine method of multivariate analysis can reach to 0.99, demonstrating a better quantitative analysis result. Simulation and experimental results verify the excellent performance of the proposed NPPPLS algorithm, which can be effectively used to improve the accuracy of quantitative analysis. In addition, this method is also expected to be used for baseline correction of the Raman spectrum, near-infrared spectrum and so on.

Automatic background correction method for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:In laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), fluctuations in laser energy, fluctuations in laser-sample or laser-plasma interactions, and environmental noise cause the acquired spectral to contain different backgrounds. The background has a substantial impact on the analysis of spectra. The aim of this work is to present a method for automatic estimation of diverse spectral backgrounds. The proposed method utilizes the ideas of window functions and differentiation, combined with a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial (Pchip), to achieve automatic removal of spectral backgrounds. In simulation experiments on background correction, it has been observed that this method outperforms asymmetric least squares (ALS) and Model-free background correction in terms of effectiveness. It exhibits the highest signal-to-background ratio (SBR). This method effectively eliminates the baseline that makes the spectrum elevated and some of the white noise. It also demonstrates stability in the background baseline jumps and in the dense region of the characteristic spectral lines. By using this approach to correct the spectral backgrounds of seven different aluminum alloys, there is a notable enhancement in the linear correlation coefficient between spectral intensity and the concentration of Mg element. In the experiment of measuring Mg concentration in aluminum alloys,the linear correlation coefficients between the predicted and actual concentrations of Mg in aluminum alloys were substantially improved after correction of the spectral background. The values of linear correlation coefficients after background correction using asymmetric least squares (ALS) and model-free methods were 0.9913 and 0.9926, respectively. The correlation coefficients between predicted and actual concentrations of Mg in aluminum alloys were improved from 0.9144 to 0.9943 by using the method proposed in this study. In contrast to ALS and Model-free methods, the proposed method showed more significant improvement on this experiment with higher linear correlation and smaller error. Both simulation and quantitative experimental findings affirm that this method achieves high accuracy and can be effectively employed for background correction prior to quantitative analysis.

Abstract:The self-absorption effect due to optically thick property greatly influences the measured line intensities as well as the performance of quantification for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) especially for calibration-free LIBS which requires proper correction. In this paper, a new self-absorption correction method for Calibration-Free LIBS (CF-LIBS), called blackbody radiation referenced self-absorption correction (BRR-SAC) is proposed. An iterative algorithm was designed to calculate the plasma temperature and normally hard-to-obtain collection efficiency of the optical collection system by directly comparing the measured spectrum with the corresponding theoretical blackbody radiation for self-absorption correction. Compared with generally applied self-absorption correction methods based on the principle of curve of growth, the proposed method has obvious advantages of simpler programming, higher computation efficiency, and its independency of the availability or accuracy of line broadening coefficients. Experiments were conducted on titanium alloy samples. The experimental results showed that the self-absorption was corrected with increased linearity of the Boltzmann plots and the measurement accuracy of the elemental concentration was significantly improved through BRR-SAC. Compared with the traditional CF-LIBS with self-absorption correction, the proposed method also showed better performance. In addition, BRR-SAC provides a simple way to obtain the collection efficiency of the experimental setup, which benefits the plasma diagnostics and quantitative analysis.
Continuous Background Correction Using Effective Points Selected in Third-Order Minima Segments in Low-Cost Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Without Intensified CCD.

Abstract:This work presents a method that can automatically estimate and remove varying continuous background emission for low-cost laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) without intensified CCD. The algorithm finds all third-order minima points in spectra and uses these points to partition the spectra into multiple subintervals. The mean value is then used as a threshold to select the effective points for the second-order minima in each subinterval. Finally, a linear interpolation method is used to realize extension of these effective points and complete fitting of the background using polynomials. Using simulated and real LIBS spectra with different complexities examine the validity of proposed algorithm. Additionally, five elements of five standard cast iron alloy samples are calibrated and improved very well after background removal. The results successfully prove the validity of the background correction algorithm.

Abstract:This paper studied the data process methods of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and proposed a spectral intensity correction method utilizing laser energy monitoring and plasma morphology imaging, combined with neural network algorithm to improve the spectral stability. We set up a LIBS system, which had a laser beam sampling module to monitor laser output energy and a CMOS camera imaging module to capture plasma flame outlines. A back propagation neural network (BPNN) model was designed for standardizing the spectrum to a lower relative standard deviation (RSD) of emission line intensities, in which training spectrum, sample energy and image parameters were inputs, and the average of all the training spectrums were outputs. This method was applied in both aluminum and soil LIBS tests, and got effective results in reducing spectral intensity fluctuations. This data processing method not only provided a practical access to acquire stable spectrum information for both qualitative and quantitative LIBS analysis but also showed a bright future of combining LIBS data processing with machine learning methods.

Abstract:<p>Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is regarded as the future superstar for chemical analysis, but the relatively high measurement uncertainty and error remain the persistent challenges for its technological development as well as wide applications. In the present work, mechanisms of measurement uncertainty generation and basic principle of signal uncertainty and matrix effects impacting quantification performance were explained. Furthermore, methods for raw signal improvement including sample preparation, system optimization, and especially plasma modulation, which modulates the laser-induced plasma evolution process for higher signal repeatability and signal-to-noise ratio, were reviewed and discussed. Different LIBS mathematical quantification methods including calibration-free methods and calibration methods, which were classified into physical-principle based calibration model, data-driven based calibration model, and hybrid model, were discussed and compared. Overall, a framework of quantification improvement strategy including key steps and main way-out was summarized and recommended for LIBS future development.</p>

Abstract:The existence of the self-absorption effect results in a nonlinear relationship between spectral intensity and elemental concentration, which dramatically affect the quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), especially calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS). In this work, the CF-LIBS with columnar density and standard reference line (CF-LIBS with CD-SRL) was proposed to improve the quantitative accuracy of CF-LIBS analysis by exploiting self-absorption. Our method allows using self-absorbed lines to perform the calibration-free approach directly and does not require self-absorption correction algorithms. To verify this method, the experiment was conducted both on aluminium-bronze and aluminium alloy samples. Compared with classical CF-LIBS, the average errors (AEs) of CF-LIBS with CD-SRL were decreased from 3.20%, 3.22%, 3.15% and 3.01%–0.95%, 1.00%, 1.16% and 1.78%, respectively for four aluminium-bronze alloy samples. The AEs were decreased from 0.66%, 0.70%, 0.89% and 1.30%–0.43%, 0.61%, 0.77% and 0.33%, respectively for four aluminium alloy samples. The experimental results demonstrated that CF-LIBS with CD-SRL provided higher quantitative accuracy and stronger adaptability than classical CF-LIBS, which is quite helpful for the practical application of CF-LIBS.

Abstract:Spectral peak overlapping is a basic problem in analytical data processing of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Curve fitting is the typical method of resolving overlapped peaks. For preventing ambiguous fitting, appropriate initial values must be known. The aim of this work was to present a method that could be used to determine appropriate initial values of the curve-fitting method by using fractional differential theory. According to the variation of characteristic points of Lorentzian peaks at different fractional differential orders, parameter estimators were obtained that were used to calculate the initial values of the curve-fitting method. As it is a widely used optimization method, the Levenberg-Marquardt method was used in curve fitting. Simulation and LIBS experimental results proved that the proposed method of the initial value estimation can effectively resolve the overlapped peaks in LIBS data processing.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising multi-elemental analysis technique and has the advantages of rapidness and minimal sample preparation. In traditional LIBS measurement, sample spectra are generally collected based on a single set of fixed experimental parameters, such as laser energy and delay time. When samples have the same main components and similar component concentrations, the difference in their spectral intensities becomes less obvious. This can lower the sensitivity of LIBS measurement and pose a threat to the accuracy and robustness of LIBS qualitative analysis. In this work, we propose a new method to increase the spectral difference between similar samples, namely multiple-setting spectra. For each sample, it adopts different sets of experimental parameters and obtains a group of spectra to increase the fingerprint spectral information. The effectiveness of the proposed method is theoretically verified and then tested on 11 similar coal samples. Specifically, the sample spectra were collected with different laser energy and delay time, and processed by principal component analysis (PCA) and Davies-Bouldin index (DBI). The results show that the use of multiple-settings spectra can significantly improve the sample discrimination accuracy from 81.8% to 96.4%. In addition, the proposed method can maintain the efficiency and cost of LIBS measurement.

Abstract:Poor spectral signal stability has always been a key problem limiting the development of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the plasma between pulses is one of the direct causes of the poor stability of the spectral signal. In this paper, a multi-directional plasma emission light collection method is proposed and its performance is tested. The main idea is to suppress the difference caused by the spatial fluctuation of the plasma by increasing the acquisition range and size. Plasma emission spectra of 11 kinds of mixed lithium ore standard samples are collected with 7 different collection schemes. The experimental results show that the intensity and stability of Ca, Al, and Mn spectral lines collected from multiple directions significantly improved compared to the single lateral and single coaxial collection methods. The mean characteristic spectral intensities are increased by a factor of 4.41 and 6.84, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean relative standard deviation of multiple-directional (1.95%) is much smaller than that of the single lateral (4.31%) or single coaxial (4.16%). The mean coefficient of determination of the univariate linear regression is also improved from RL2 ̄=0.8722 (single lateral) and RC2 ̄=0.8849 (single coaxial) to RC+4L2 ̄=0.9351 (multiple-directional). The innovative and developed system based on LIBS and the multi-directional plasma collection method can effectively improve the detection repeatability and accuracy and has application values in sample measurement.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), as a new material composition detection technology, has lots of advantages such as rapid, real-time, micro-damage, in-situ, multi-element analysis and so on. At present, it has been widely used in environmental monitoring, food safety, mineral processing and metallurgy, biomedicine, space exploration and other fields. However, due to the self-absorption, the spectral intensity is reduced. In severe cases, the line profile is even sunken in the centrum ("self-reversal"). The linear coefficient of calibration curve decreases, resulting in the deterioration of the accuracy of element detection, so that large-scale commercial applications cannot be realized. Therefore, the exploration of the self-absorption effect and its correction methods has always been the research hotspot. In this review, the progress of the correction method and the physical mechanism of self-absorption are reviewed. The main correction methods are summarized from the perspectives of experiment parameters optimization, physical assist device, self-absorption model and correction algorithm, respectively. The advantages and disadvantages of the primary correction methods are compared and analyzed. The experiment parameters optimization has the advantages of simple principle and operation. The effect of self-absorption reduction of laser stimulated absorption LIBS (LSA-LIBS) is stable. Microwave assisted excitation LIBS (MAE-LIBS) can reduce the self-absorption effect of multiple elements simultaneously and cost low. The self-absorption coefficient method can directly quantify the degree of self-absorption effect, has simple calculation steps and requires less plasma parameters. The self-absorption correction algorithm based on internal reference line has high calculation efficiency and obvious correction effect. Optically thin method can directly obtain optically thin spectral lines to avoid theoretical errors. Finally, the future research direction and development trend of self-absorption is prospected in our opinion.

Abstract:The self-absorption effect is one of the main bottlenecks for the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. In this Letter, LIBS assisted by laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) is proposed to solve this problem. The process of LSA in self-absorption reduction is discussed and confirmed. The serious self-absorption phenomena of spectral lines (K, Mn, and Al) were not observed in LSA-LIBS. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of K, Mn, and Al was reduced by about 58%, 25%, and 52%, respectively. The results demonstrate the capability of this approach to self-absorption reduction in the LIBS technique.
Long-term Repeatability Improvement Using Beam Intensity Distribution for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:The relatively low measurement repeatability has long been considered as a major obstacle to the widespread use and commercialization of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Although many efforts have been made to improve the signal repeatability in the short term, how to improve the long-term signal repeatability is critical in practical applications and has rarely been studied. Moreover, the mechanisms behind the degradation of long-term repeatability are not fully revealed. This study proposes a new method to improve the long-term repeatability of LIBS measurement, which modifies the spectral intensity based on laser beam intensity distribution. It first pre-processes the beam intensity distribution profiles and spectral intensity. Then the relationship between the relative deviations of beam and spectral intensities is modelled using Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR). The proposed method was tested on copper and silicon samples, and the spectra and laser beam intensity distribution were recorded for more than thirty days. Day-to-day variations in beam intensity distribution were observed. Such variations can lead to changes in spectral intensity, resulting in degraded signal repeatability. By modifying the spectral intensity, the long-term signal repeatability was improved. Specifically, in terms of day-mean spectral intensity, the valid correction rates were above 70% for both of copper silicon sample in most cases. Long-term RSD decreased from ∼13.5% to ∼4% for copper and decreased from ∼10.7% to 6.5% for silicon sample. These results indicate that the proposed method provides a viable method for improving the long-term repeatability of LIBS measurement.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been regarded as a future superstar for chemical analysis for years due to its unique features such as little or no sample preparation, remote sensing, and fast and multi-element analysis. Chinese LIBS community is one of the most dynamically developing communities in the World. The aim of the work is to inspect what have been done in China for LIBS development and, based on the understanding of the overall status, to identify the challenges and opportunities for the future development. In this paper, the scientific contributions from Chinese LIBS community are reviewed for the following four aspects: fundamentals, instrumentation, data processing and modeling, and applications; and the driving force of LIBS development in China is analyzed, the critical issues for successful LIBS application are discussed, and in our opinion, the potential direction to improve the technology and to realize large scale commercialization in China is proposed.
Quantitative Analysis method of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on temperature iterative correction of self-absorption effect

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an ideal real-time on-line method for the detection of minor elements in alloys. However, in the case of high-density plasma generated by LIBS, the self-absorption is usually an undesired effect because it not only reduces the true line intensity, introduces nonlinear effects in the growth of line intensity versus the content of the emitting species, but also affects the characterization parameters of the plasma, and finally affects the accuracy of quantitative analysis. Since the plasma electron temperature ( T ), radiation particle number density and absorption path length ( Nl ) determine the degree of self-absorption and affect the corrected spectral line intensity, a new self-absorption correction method based on temperature iteration is proposed. This method obtains the initial T through spectral line intensity, and calculates the self-absorption coefficient SA based on the initial Nl parameter to correct the spectral line intensity. Then a new T is obtained from the new spectral line intensity and the new SA is calculated to further correct the spectral line intensity. Through continuous calculation and correction of these two parameters, self-absorption correction is finally achieved. The experimental results of alloy steel samples showed that the linearity of Boltzmann plots was increased from 0.867 without self-absorption correction to 0.974 with self-absorption correction, and the linear correlation coefficient R 2 of the single variable calibration curve for Mn element increased from 0.971 to 0.997. The relative error of elemental content measurement has significantly improved from 4.32% without self-absorption correction to 1.23% with self-absorption correction. Compared with the commonly applied self-absorption correction methods, this method has obvious advantages of simpler programming, higher computation efficiency, and its independency of the availability or accuracy of Stark broadening coefficients. Moreover, this method can directly obtain the radiation particle number density and absorption path length, which is beneficial to the diagnosis and quantitative analysis of plasma.

Abstract:In this paper, we will discuss a new method for obtaining information about the plasma temporal evolution in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) experiments using a time-integrated spectrometer. The method, inspired to the Bredice 3D-Boltzmann plot formalism, allows a precise determination of the temporal evolution of the emission line intensity in a LIBS plasma, starting from a series of time-integrated measurements obtained at different delay times after the laser pulse. In this way the application of a calibration-free algorithm using a time-integrated spectrometer is made possible. Examples of the application of the method are given in the analysis of two Zamac (a zinc alloy containing aluminum, magnesium, and copper) certified samples. A good agreement is obtained between the calculated and nominal concentrations of the two samples. A further validation of the method was performed on a third Zamac sample, of unknown composition. Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a spectroscopic analytic technique with great application potential because of its unique advantages for online/in-situ detection. However, due to the spatially inhomogeneity and drastically temporal varying nature of its emission source, the laser-induced plasma, it is difficult to find or hard to generate an appropriate spatiotemporal window for high repeatable signal collection with lower matrix effects. The quantification results of traditional physical principle based calibration model are unsatisfactory since these models were not able to compensate for complicate matrix effects as well as signal fluctuation. Machine learning is an emerging approach, which can intelligently correlated the complex LIBS spectral data with its qualitative or/and quantitative composition by establishing multivariate regression models with greater potential to reduce the impacts of signal fluctuation and matrix effects, therefore achieving relatively better qualitative and quantitative performance. In this review, the progress of machine learning application in LIBS is summarized from two main aspects: i) Pre-processing data for machine learning model, including spectral selection, variable reconstruction, and denoising to improve qualitative/quantitative performance; ii) Machine learning methods for better quantification performance with reduction of the impact of matrix effect as well as LIBS spectra fluctuations. The review also points out the issues that researchers need to address in their future research on improving the performance of LIBS analysis using machine learning algorithms, such as restrictions on training data, the disconnect between physical principles and algorithms, the low generalization ability and massive data processing ability of the model.

Abstract:Element recognition of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) can be achieved by analyzing the corresponding peaks of plasma emissions. However, it is still challenging to make quick judgments due to database disagreements, such as wavelength or line-ratio. This study presents a simple method to conduct element recognition based on comparing vectors established by the quantities of spectral peaks, which allows an accurate recognition of the principle elements regardless of wavelength shifts. By examining deep-sea samples, this method demonstrates the recognition effectiveness for rare earth elements (REEs) with an accuracy over 80%. The developed method proves to be practical in LIBS qualitative analysis, and it can serve as an effective complement to existing approaches for element identification.

Abstract:Calibration-free (CF) laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is normally only applicable for gated detectors due to its dependence on the assumption of a steady-state plasma. However, most currently available LIBS systems are equipped with non-gated detectors such as charge-coupled device (CCD), which degrades the accuracy of CF method. In this paper, the reason for the less satisfactory quantification performance of CF for LIBS with non-gated detectors was clarified and a time-integration calibration-free (TICF) model was proposed for applications with non-gated detectors. It was based on an assumed temporal profile of plasma properties, including temperature and electron density, obtained from another pre-experiment. The line intensity at different time during the signal collection time window was estimated with self-absorption correction according to the temporal profile of the plasma properties. The proposed model was validated on titanium alloys and compared with traditional CF. The accuracy of elemental concentration measurement was improved significantly: the average relative error of aluminum and vanadium decreased from 6.07% and 22.34% to 2.01% and 1.92%, respectively. The quantification results showed that TICF method was able to extend the applicability of CF to LIBS with non-gated detectors.
