Abstract:This work presents a dual-side polished photonic crystal fiber (PCF) biosensor employing surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for the detection of diverse cancer cell types, encompassing those linked to the adrenal gland, breast, skin, cervical, and blood. As a novel approach, we have chosen a side polished PCF as it exposes a larger surface area for the light-gold interaction. This can increase the coupling efficiency between the guided mode and surface plasmon modes, leading to higher sensitivity in detecting changes in the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium. The investigation involves liquid samples representing both cancerous and healthy cell states, each characterized by their respective RIs, to facilitate detection. Upon the application of the cancer-affected sample onto the proposed sensor probe, an absorption peak emerges at the resonance wavelength, distinct from the absorption peak observed in the healthy sample. This difference in absorption peaks serves as the foundation for sensitivity measurement. As a result, the proposed cancer sensor demonstrates sensitivities of 16,428.57 nmRIU −1 , 22,142.8 nmRIU −1 , 17,541.67 nmRIU −1 , 17,000 nmRIU −1 , 18,571.42 nmRIU −1 , and 22,500 nmRIU −1 , respectively, for adrenal gland, blood, cervical, skin, breast type 1 (MDA-MB-231), and breast type 2 (MCF-7) cancer cells. These numerical outcomes underscore the significant credibility of our proposed biosensor in effectively identifying various cancer cell types.
