Abstract:One of the outstanding challenges in nanotechnology is how to assemble individual nano-objects into macroscopic architectures while preserving their extraordinary properties. For example, the one-dimensional character of electrons in individual carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic transport, optical, and magnetic phenomena, but their macroscopic manifestations have been limited. Here, we describe novel methods for preparing macroscopic films, sheets, and fibers of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and their applications to basic and applied studies. Sufficiently thick films act as ideal terahertz polarizers, and appropriately doped films operate as polarization-sensitive, flexible, powerless, and ultrabroadband photodetectors. Together with recently developed chirality enrichment methods, these developments will allow us to probe, understand, and control dynamic conductivities of interacting one-dimensional electrons in macroscopic single crystals of single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotubes.
Physics of Hard Sphere Experiment: Scattering, Rheology and Microscopy Study of Colloidal Particles

Abstract:The Physics of Hard Sphere Experiment has two incarnations: the first as a scattering and rheology experiment on STS-83 and STS-94 and the second as a microscopy experiment to be performed in the future on LMM on the space station. Here we describe some of the quantitative and qualitative results from previous flights on the dynamics of crystallization in microgravity and especially the observed interaction of growing crystallites in the coexistance regime. To clarify rheological measurements we also present ground based experiments on the low shear rate viscosity and diffusion coefficient of several hard sphere experiments at high volume fraction. We also show how these experiments will be performed with confocal microscopy and laser tweezers in our lab and as preparation for the phAse II experiments on LMM. One of the main aims of the microscopy study will be the control of colloidal samples using an array of applied fields with an eye toward colloidal architectures. Temperature gradients, electric field gradients, laser tweezers and a variety of switchable imposed surface patterns are used toward this control.

Abstract:The GANIL-Spiral facility (Caen, France) is dedicated to the acceleration of heavy ion beams for nuclear physics, atomic physics, radiobiology and material irradiation. The production of radioactive ion beams for nuclear physics studies represents the main part of the activity. The facility possesses a versatile combination of equipments, which permits to produce accelerated radioactive ion beams with two complementary methods: Isotope Separation In Line (ISOL) and In-Flight Separation techniques (IFS). Considering the future of GANIL, SPIRAL II projects aims to produce high intensity secondary beams, by fission induced with a 5 mA deuteron beam on an uranium target.

Abstract:X-ray microscopy is a mature characterization tool routinely used to answer various questions of science, technology and engineering. The high penetration power of X-rays allows to utilize different characterization methods and reveal elemental composition, crystalline phases, strain distribution, oxidation states etc. in macroscopic and microscopic samples. To obtain comprehensive chemical and structural information at the nanometer scale an X-ray microscope must be equipped with adequate capabilities and allow acquisition of multiple datasets simultaneously. Full-field or scanning X-ray microscopes usually serve this purpose and complement each other. In the recent years, a number of X-ray microscopes have been designed, constructed and commissioned at NSLS-II. In this work we provide an overview of the microscopy instrumentation developments at NSLS-II. It includes the multilayer Laue Lens based nanoprobe optimized for 10 nm spatial resolution imaging, it’s current status and future upgrades; the zone plate based full-field imaging system capable of nano-tomography measurements in less than 1 minute; a laser scanning system optimized for ptychography measurements along with algorithms development, and a new Kirkpatrick-Baez based scanning microscope designed for sub-100 nm spatial resolution experiments.

Abstract:The miniaturisation of transistors is approaching its limits due to challenges in heat management and information transfer speed. To overcome these obstacles, emerging technologies such as spintronics are being developed, which leverage the electron's spin in addition to its charge. Local phenomena at interfaces or structural defects will greatly influence the efficiency of spin-based devices, making the ability to study and control spin wave propagation at the nano- and atomic scales a key challenge. The development of high-spatial-resolution tools to probe spin waves, also called magnons, at relevant lengthscales is thus essential to understand how their properties are affected by such local features. Here, we show the first experimental detection of bulk magnons at the nanoscale using scanning transmission electron microscopy. By employing high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy with hybrid-pixel direct electron detectors optimized for low acceleration voltages, we successfully overcome the challenges posed by weak signals and identify magnon excitations in a thin NiO nanocrystal. Advanced inelastic electron scattering simulations corroborate our findings. These results open new avenues for detecting magnons, exploring their dispersions and their modifications arising from nanoscale structural or chemical defects. This marks an important milestone in magnonics and presents exciting opportunities for the future development of spintronic devices.

Abstract:Je presente une revue des microlentilles gravitationnelles en quatre lecons. Dans un premier temps, je discute la theorie des microlentilles dans le contexte general des lentilles, en incluant les effets de la taille finie des sources, de la parallaxe, et du retard temporel entre les images. Dans la deuxieme lecon, j'analyse les experiences courantes. Je montre qu'il n'est pas possible d'expliquer les evenements observes avec les etoiles connues, que ce soit en direction du bulbe ou du Grand Nuage de Magellan. Je decris quelques nouvelles experiences qui pourraient nous reveler les caracteristiques des objets detectes. Le troisieme sujet porte sur la methode des pixels, inventee pour observer des evenements de microlentilles sur des sources non resolues. Je presente une analyse generale de la methode, en incluant des problemes d'alignement geometrique, photometrique, et de PSF, du rapport signal sur bruit, et de la nature des informations tirees des observations. Je presente un rapport sur le progres des experiences actuelles et je discute de deux idees pour rechercher des objets sombres dans l'amas de Virgo et des `microlentilles extremes' dans le bulbe. Pour finir, je parle de l'avenir des microlentilles. J'explique comment on peut les utiliser pour rechercher des planetes, pour mesurer les vitesses transverses de galaxies et les vitesses de rotation d'etoiles geantes, et pour rechercher les objets de la masse d'une comete se trouvant de l'autre cote de l'univers. Unravelling the Spin Dynamics of Molecular Nanomagnets with Four-Dimensional Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Abstract:Molecular Nanomagnets have attracted the attention of the scientific community since the rich physics behind their magnetic behaviour make them ideal test-beds for fundamental concepts in quantum mechanics. Sophisticated experiments and targeted research activities have also unveiled their potential for several technological applications. Inelastic neutron scattering is a powerful and widely used technique to investigate the properties of these systems. The new generation of spectrometers, equipped with arrays of position-sensitive detectors, enable to efficiently measure the neutron cross-sections as a function of energy and of the three component of the momentum transfer vector Q, in vast portions of the reciprocal space. Exploiting these capabilities together with the availability of sufficiently large single-crystal samples of MNMs, it is now possible to obtain an unprecedented insight into the coherent spin dynamics of these molecular clusters. This is witnessed by several recent results, that we present in this review. By using the benchmark system Cr$_8$, it has been demonstrated that the richness of the four-dimensional inelastic neutrons scattering technique enables to extract dynamical correlation functions directly from the data. This technique has been also applied to the archetypical single-molecule magnet Mn$_{12}$ to unambiguously characterise its Spin Hamiltonian as well as to portray the entanglement between molecular qubits in (Cr$_7$Ni)$_2$.

Abstract:Quantum sensors based on solid-state spins provide tremendous opportunities in a wide range of fields from basic physics and chemistry to biomedical imaging. However, integrating them into a scanning probe microscope to enable practical, nanoscale quantum imaging is a highly challenging task. Recently, the use of single spins in diamond in conjunction with atomic force microscopy techniques has allowed significant progress towards this goal, but generalisation of this approach has so far been impeded by long acquisition times or by the absence of simultaneous topographic information. Here we report on a scanning quantum probe microscope which solves both issues, by employing a nano-spin ensemble hosted in a nanodiamond. This approach provides up to an order of magnitude gain in acquisition time, whilst preserving sub-100 nm spatial resolution both for the quantum sensor and topographic images. We demonstrate two applications of this microscope. We first image nanoscale clusters of maghemite particles through both spin resonance spectroscopy and spin relaxometry, under ambient conditions. Our images reveal fast magnetic field fluctuations in addition to a static component, indicating the presence of both superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic particles. We next demonstrate a new imaging modality where the nano-spin ensemble is used as a thermometer. We use this technique to map the photo-induced heating generated by laser irradiation of a single gold nanoparticle in a fluid environment. This work paves the way towards new applications of quantum probe microscopy such as thermal/magnetic imaging of operating microelectronic devices and magnetic detection of ion channels in cell membranes.

Abstract:AbstractThe macroscopic properties of many materials are determined by structural features spanning a wide range of length scales. The nano-imaging endstation ID22NI of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is optimized for nanoscale imaging (X-ray focus size well below 100 nm) at high X-ray energy (17 – 29 keV), making it possible to study the interior of dense samples with a millimetric size. Computed tomography and computed laminography setups allow three dimensional imaging of a wide variety of samples, laminography being especially suited for non-destructive imaging of flat samples. The focused X-rays are used as a scanning probe for fluorescence tomography, providing sensitivity for elemental composition down to the ppm level. Projection microscopy with phase contrast is used for imaging the electron density in an extremely sensitive way. We demonstrate these capabilities by imaging a Be pebble. We found large scale cracks and nanoporosity (< 1 μm pores). Furthermore, beryllium oxide inclusions could be detected, ranging from 200 nm to several microns in size. Some of the smallest inclusions were located next to a small pore, indicating beryllium oxide formation after solidification of the structure.

Abstract:The high lateral resolution and sensitivity of the NanoSIMS 50 and 50L series of dynamic SIMS instruments has enabled numerous scientific advances over the past 25 years. Here we report on the NanoSIMS-HR, the first major upgrade to the series, and analytical tests in a suite of sample types, including an aluminum sample containing silicon crystals, microalgae and plant roots colonized with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Significant improvements have been made in the Cs ion source, high voltage (HV) control, stage reproducibility, and other aspects of the instrument that affect performance. The modified design of the NanoSIMS-HR thermal-ionization Cs source enables a 5-pA primary ion beam to be focused into a 100 nm spot, a ~2.5-fold increase compared to Cs sources on previous instruments (~2 pA at 100 nm). The brightness of the new Cs source enables an ultimate lateral resolution as high as 30 nm and improved detection limits for a given analysis area. Sample stage movement accuracy is higher than 500 nm, enabling many-fold higher throughput automated analyses. With the new HV control, the primary ion beam impact energy can be reduced from 16 keV to 2 keV, which enables higher depth resolution during depth profiling (a 2-fold improvement), albeit with a 5-fold decrease in lateral resolution. In the NanoSIMS-HR, the secondary ion column and detection system are identical to those used in the previous series, and isotopic analysis performance is as precise as in previous NanoSIMS instruments.

Nanometer Scale Spectral Imaging of Quantum Emitters in Nanowires and Its Correlation to Their Atomically Resolved Structure

Abstract:We report the spectral imaging in the UV to visible range with nanometer scale resolution of closely packed GaN/AlN quantum disks in individual nanowires using an improved custom-made cathodoluminescence system. We demonstrate the possibility to measure full spectral features of individual quantum emitters as small as 1 nm and separated from each other by only a few nanometers and the ability to correlate their optical properties to their size, measured with atomic resolution. The direct correlation between the quantum disk size and emission wavelength provides evidence of the quantum confined Stark effect leading to an emission below the bulk GaN band gap for disks thicker than 2.6 nm. With the help of simulations, we show that the internal electric field in the studied quantum disks is smaller than what is expected in the quantum well case. We show evidence of a clear dispersion of the emission wavelengths of different quantum disks of identical size but different positions along the wire. This dispersion is systematically correlated to a change of the diameter of the AlN shell coating the wire and is thus attributed to the related strain variations along the wire. The present work opens the way both to fundamental studies of quantum confinement in closely packed quantum emitters and to characterizations of optoelectronic devices presenting carrier localization on the nanometer scale.

Abstract:The aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) can provide real space imaging and spectroscopy at atomic resolution with a new level of sensitivity to structure, bonding, elemental valence and even spin state [1]. Coupled with first‐principles theory, this represents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the functionality of complex nanoscale systems. Two case studies will be presented utilizing the Nion UltraSTEM: first, determining the origin of the unexpected ferromagnetism in ultrathin, insulating LaCoO 3‐x (LCO) films, which is induced by the spontaneous ordering of oxygen vacancies to relieve misfit strain (see Fig. 1) [2]. Second, the origin of the colossal ionic conductivity in Y‐stabilized ZrO 2 /SrTiO 3 superlattices [3], which is due to spontaneous disordering of the oxygen sublattice in response to biaxial strain coupled with the incompatibility of the oxygen sublattices at the interfaces (see Fig. 2) [4‐6]. A JEOL ARM 200F has recently been installed in the National University of Singapore, equipped with UHR pole piece, ASCOR hexapole aberration corrector, Gatan Quantum ER and OneView camera and Oxford Aztec EDS system. It is installed within a JEOL isolated room with thermal radiation panels, vibration and magnetic field isolation systems. Fig. 3 shows a Ronchigram at 200 kV with near 70 mrad half angle flat phase region, and initial results from Si [110] show good splitting of the dumbbells with information transfer to sub‐Angstrom levels, see Fig. 4. Results on oxides will be presented at the meeting [7].

Abstract:The SPIRAL2 linac is now successfully commissioned; H + , 4 He 2+ , D + and 18 O 6+ have been accelerated up to nominal parameters and 18 O 7+ and 40 Ar 14+ beams have been also accelerated up to 7 MeV/A. The main steps with 5 mA H + , D + beams and with 0.6 mA 18 O 6+ are described. The general results of the commissioning of the RF, cryogenic and diagnostics systems, as well as the preliminary results of the first experiments on NFS are presented. In addition of an improvement of the matching to the linac, the tuning procedures of the 3 Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) rebunchers and 26 linac SC cavities were progressively improved to reach the nominal parameters in operation, starting from the classical "signature matching method". The different cavity tuning methods developed to take into account our particular situation (very low energy and large phase extension) are described. The tools developed for an efficient linac tuning in operation, e.g. beam energy and intensity changes are also discussed.

Abstract:Confocal microscopes have been the workhorses of 3-D biological imaging, but they are slow, offer limited depth penetration and collect only ballistic photons. With their inefficient use of excitation photons they expose biological samples to an often intolerably high light burden. The speed limitation and photo-bleaching risk can be somewhat relaxed in a spinning-disk geometry, due to shorter pixel dwell times and rapid re-scans during image capture. Alternatively, light-sheet microscopes rapidly image large volumes of transparent or chemically cleared samples. Finally, with infrared excitation and efficient scattered-light collection, 2-photon microscopy allows deep-tissue imaging, but it remains slow. Here, we describe a new optical scheme that borrows the best from three different worlds: the speed and direct-view from a spinning-disk confocal, deep tissue-penetration and intrinsic optical sectioning from 2-photon excitation, and a large field of view and a low invasiveness of a selective-plane illumination microscope – all with a single objective lens. We validate the performance of our 2-photon spinning-disk microscope in various applications that have in common to simultaneously require a large depth penetration, high speed and larger fields of view. Beyond biological fluorescence, we demonstrate an application in material science, imaging coherent non-linear scattering from a 3-D nano-porous network.

Abstract:The structure and dynamics of isolated nanosamples in free flight can be directly visualized via single-shot coherent diffractive imaging using the intense and short pulses of x-ray free-electron lasers. Wide-angle scattering images encode three-dimensional (3D) morphological information of the samples, but its retrieval remains a challenge. Up to now, effective 3D morphology reconstructions from single shots were only achieved via fitting with highly constrained models, requiring a priori knowledge about possible geometries. Here, we present a much more generic imaging approach. Relying on a model that allows for any sample morphology described by a convex polyhedron, we reconstruct wide-angle diffraction patterns from individual silver nanoparticles. In addition to known structural motives with high symmetries, we retrieve imperfect shapes and agglomerates that were not previously accessible. Our results open unexplored routes toward true 3D structure determination of single nanoparticles and, ultimately, 3D movies of ultrafast nanoscale dynamics.

Abstract:Nanoparticles, exhibiting functionally relevant structural heterogeneity, are at the forefront of cutting-edge research. Now, high-throughput single-particle imaging (SPI) with x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) creates unprecedented opportunities for recovering the shape distributions of millions of particles that exhibit functionally relevant structural heterogeneity. To realize this potential, three challenges have to be overcome: (1) simultaneous parametrization of structural variability in real and reciprocal spaces; (2) efficiently inferring the latent parameters of each SPI measurement; (3) scaling up comparisons between $10^5$ structural models and $10^6$ XFEL-SPI measurements. Here, we describe how we overcame these three challenges to resolve the non-equilibrium shape distributions within millions of gold nanoparticles imaged at the European XFEL. These shape distributions allowed us to quantify the degree of asymmetry in these particles, discover a relatively stable `shape envelope' amongst nanoparticles, discern finite-size effects related to shape-controlling surfactants, and extrapolate nanoparticles' shapes to their idealized thermodynamic limit. Ultimately, these demonstrations show that XFEL SPI can help transform nanoparticle shape characterization from anecdotally interesting to statistically meaningful.

Spatial resolution studies using point spread function extraction in optically read out Micromegas and GEM detectors

Abstract:Optically read out gaseous detectors are used in track reconstruction and imaging applications requiring high granularity images. Among resolution-determining factors, the amplification stage plays a crucial role and optimisations of detector geometry are pursued to maximise spatial resolution. To compare MicroPattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technologies, focused low-energy X-ray beams at the SOLEIL synchrotron facility were used to record and extract point spread function widths with Micromegas and GEM detectors. Point spread function width of $\approx$108\,\microns for Micromegas and $\approx$127\,\microns for GEM foils were extracted. The scanning of the beam with different intensities, energies and across the detector active region can be used to quantify resolution-limiting factors and improve imaging detectors using MPGD amplification stages.

Abstract:Hanbury-Brown and Twiss analysis is used to determine the size and timespan of emitted particles. Here, we propose to adapt this method for laser-induced nanoplasmonic inertial confinement fusion to determine the parameters of emitted Deuterium and Helium4 nuclei. This communication is a short article that presents part of a larger study over multiple years. It presents a cutting edge method that is new in the field of Inertial Confinement Fusion.

Simulation and Fabrication of Nanoscale Spirals Based on Dual-Scale Self-Assemblies

Abstract:Archimedean spirals in nanometer scale have shown remarkable plasmonic responses derived from their linear and rotational asymmetry. Despite the unique optical properties of nanoscale spirals, their applications have been limited due to the difficulty in fabricating large-scale arrays with uniform and systematic control of the morphology. Here, we report simulation results of spiral morphologies, which are used to design a scalable fabrication process for nanoscale spirals and predict their plasmonic responses. First, self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulations were performed to design optimal templates to guide self-assembly into spiral morphologies. Using the SCFT results, we developed a scalable fabrication process, which is based on the micron-scale assembly of microspheres combined with glancing angle deposition and nanoscale assembly of block copolymers, to induce the formation of uniform nanospirals with diverse size, handedness, orientation, and winding number. Finally, finite-difference time-domain simulation results show linear dichroism and electric field intensity enhancement effects of these nanospirals, which are highly dependent on the winding number of the spirals, indicating the importance of precise control of the structural parameters.

Abstract:We demonstrate rotational excitation spectroscopy with the scanning tunneling microscope for physisorbed hydrogen and its isotopes hydrogen-deuterid and deuterium. The observed excitation energies are very close to the gas phase values and show the expected scaling with moment of inertia. Since these energies are characteristic for the molecular nuclear spin states we are able to identify the para and ortho species of hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. We thereby demonstrate nuclear spin sensitivity with unprecedented spatial resolution.
