Abstract:This study aims to elucidate the molecular characterization of Trichoderma strains isolated from rice soil rhizosphere from paddy cultivation in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and investigate their beneficial effects on seedling growth of local rice varieties. A total of eight strains of Trichoderma strains were analyzed using 18 s rRNA gene. Their ability to enhance rice seedling growth was determined through an in vitro assay where Trichoderma inoculated seeds were compared with those uninoculated seeds on petridishes under aseptic laboratory condition. The results showed that seven out of eight strains of Trichoderma were identical to T. harzianum (99–100%) and the other strain was identical to T. minutisporum (99%). Each strain had recorded different capacity in increasing rice seedling growth. This study successfully identified two species of Trichoderma (T. harzianum and T. minutisporum) isolated from rice rhizosphere of rice cultivations in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and Trichoderma strains was found to be able to increase rice seedling growth
