Abstract:Problem statement. Due to Russia's ongoing terrorist attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities, the energy system was damaged, resulting in blackouts and rolling blackouts across the country. The destruction of power capacities resulted in the unstable operation of certain critical infrastructure units for electricity generation at thermal, nuclear and hydroelectric power plants and the introduction of forced hourly blackout schedules. Seizure of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, occupation and full control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant (TPP). Complete destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station (HPP), partial destruction of the Dnipro HPP, Dniester HPP and Kaniv HPP. During the hostilities, Kryvyi Rih and Prydniprovia TPPs were damaged, Luhansk TPP (90–100 %), Vuhlehirsk TPP (90–100 %), Zmiiv TPP (up to 90 %) were completely destroyed, Burshtyn TPP (80–90 %) and Ladyzhyn TPP (70–95 %) were almost completely destroyed. The purpose of the article is to identify and analyse the damage to Ukrainian TPPs, HPPs and NPPs caused by the Russian military actions against Ukraine and to determine possible consequences for the nuclear fuel cycle of our country and possible prospects for the transition to new nuclear reactors of European and global fuel cell manufacturers, to improve equipment and stabilise the energy market in the context of military operations. Conclusion. In the course of the analysis of potential hazards at radiation hazardous facilities (RHF) in Ukraine, it was determined that the main threat is accidents at RHF with release of radiation into the atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere. In the light of recent events regarding the military seizure of the Chornobyl NPP and Zaporizhzhya NPP, measurements using standard methods of research, screening and monitoring are not possible, and access of IAEA representatives is limited, which is why the latest measurement methods should be used with the use of autonomous remote-controlled ground, surface and air drones in automatic object or sample measurement of radiation parameters at RNS. It is the use of autonomous vehicles (drones) that is currently the most pressing issue of radiation safety not only in the nuclear power industry but also in the entire nuclear fuel cycle as part of the environmental safety of Ukraine. In case of seizure of a nuclear facility or limited access to it, research methods should be changed. If the facility is partially seized or access is available, then express methods of radiation contamination registration or sampling can be used and the method of laboratory research can be used in the future. However, if a nuclear power plant or a facility that is part of the nuclear fuel cycle of Ukraine is captured and access to it is impossible, then only methods of remote measurement of the radiation situation at and around nuclear facilities using ground and airborne autonomous vehicles remain. For further research, it is necessary to identify technical possibilities for using Ukraine's own mineral resources and switching from Soviet RBMK-1000, VVER-440 and VVER-1000 reactors with fuel elements supplied to us from the Russian Federation to newer types of European and American reactors with appropriate fuel elements.
Dirty bomb source term characterization and downwind dispersion: Review of experimental evidence

Abstract:Dirty bombs are considered one of the easiest forms of radiological terrorism, a form of terrorism based on the deliberate use of radiological material to cause adverse effects in a target population. One U.S. Government official has even described a dirty bomb attack as "all but inevitable". While people in the vicinity of the blast may experience acute radiation effects, people downwind may unknowingly be contaminated by the radioactive airborne particulate and face increased long-term cancer risk. The likelihood of increased cancer risk depends on the radionuclide used and its specific activity, its aerosolization potential, the particle sizes generated in the blast, and where a person is with respect to the detonation. Different studies have reported that plausible radionuclides for dirty bomb include 60Co, 90Sr, 137Cs, 192Ir, 241Am based on their availability in commercial sources as well as safeguards, the amount needed for adverse health effects, previous mishandling of radionuclides and malicious uses. In order to have increased long-term cancer risk, the radionuclide would have to deposit inside the body by entering the respiratory tract and then possibly migrate to other organs or bones (ground shine is not considered in this paper because areas affected by the event will likely become inaccessible). This implies that the particles will have to be smaller than 10 μm to be inhaled. Experiments involving the detonation of dirty bombs have shown that particles or droplets smaller than 10 μm are generated, independently from the initial radionuclide or its state (e.g., powder, solution). Atmospheric tests have shown that in unobstructed terrain, the radionuclide laden cloud can travel kilometers downwind even for relatively small amounts of explosives. Buildings in the path of the cloud can change the dose rate. For instance, in one experiment with a single building, the dose rate was 1-2 orders of magnitude lower behind the obstacle compared to its front face. For people walking around, the amount of particulate deposited on them and inhaled will depend on their path relative to the cloud, resulting in the counterintuitive result that the closer people may actually not be the ones more at risk because they could simply miss the bulk of the cloud in their wandering. In summary, the long-term cancer risk for people caught in a dirty bomb cloud away from the detonation requires considering where and when the people are, which radionuclide was used, and the layout of the obstacles (e.g., buildings, vegetation) in the path of the cloud.
Chornobyl radiation spikes are not due to military vehicles disturbing soil

Abstract:On 25th February 2022, increased gamma radiation dose rates were reported within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ). This coincided with Russian military vehicles entering the Ukrainian part of the CEZ from neighbouring Belarus. It was speculated that contaminated soil resuspension by vehicle movements or a leak from the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) complex may explain these spikes in radiation dose rates. The gamma dose rate monitoring network in the CEZ provides a crucial early warning system for releases of radioactivity to the environment and is part of the international safeguards for nuclear facilities. With the potential for further military action in the CEZ and concerns over nuclear safety, it is essential that such anomalous readings are investigated. We evaluate the hypotheses suggested to explain the apparent gamma dose rate increases, demonstrating that neither military vehicle-induced soil resuspension nor a leak from the ChNPP are plausible. However, disruption of the Chornobyl base-station's reception of wireless signals from the CRMS network may potentially explain the dose rate increases recorded.

Abstract:Fuel "hot" particles are the most unpredictable dose-forming components in the soils of uranium contaminated regions, such as Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Over time in the environment, "hot" particles undergo gradual dissolution with the release of uranium as well as fission and neutron-activation products trapped inside the uranium-oxide fuel matrix. The environmental fate of fuel particles depends not only on the environmental conditions but mainly on the conditions of their formation in the reactor and during the accident. In the present work micromorphology, fuel burnup and uranium oxidation state of several fuel "hot" particles, collected on the Western trace of Chernobyl fallout, were studied using a combination of non-destructive or semi-non-destructive techniques: gamma-spectrometry, secondary-ion mass-spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, the X-ray absorption near-edge structure and the high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. An attempt has been made to assess the contribution of the conditions of particle formation and the conditions of being in the environment to the current state of particles after more than a quarter of a century of history in the environment.

Critical Reviews Consequences of the chernobyl accident on health and the environment KEYWORDS

Abstract:The former Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located in Northern Ukraine. The site is only 18 km south of the border with Belarus. The town of Chernobyl (12,500 inhabitants at the time of the accident) is 16 km to the northwest. The town of Pripyat (49,000 inhabitants at the time of the accident) was built less than five kilometres away, also to the northwest of the power plant, to house personnel working at the facility and their families. The accident that occurred at the power plant during the night of 25 to 26 April 1986 at around one oclock in the morning is, in terms of its scale and the environmental, economic and health consequences, the most severe accident to date in the history of the civil nuclear industry. At the time of the accident, the plant had four RBMK reactors each capable of producing 1000 Megawatts of electric power. Two more reactors were under construction but were never to be commissioned. These reactors, built to a design developed in the 1960s, are cooled using a system of ordinary water flowing through vertical pressure tubes in which is inserted zirconium alloy cladding containing the fuel: low-enriched uranium dioxide containing 2% uranium-235. The nuclear fission reaction that takes place in the core generates a massive output of heat. During the reaction, fission products, actinides and activation products are generated. The reactor coolant is water and four pumps are used to circulate it through the system (one of which is kept always as backup). The neutron moderator was graphite in the form of 211 moveable control rods that can be inserted between the pressure tubes containing the fuel cladding and coolant. The more rods that are inserted, the more neutrons are absorbed, thus reducing the fission rate. Three main causes combined to produce the disaster: the Soviet authorities had failed to take adequate account of safety issues in the design of the reactor; when the reactor was at reduced power, the test of a new emergency core cooling system was ineffectively managed; and, third, the operators actions were inappropriate, thus aggravating the meltdown process. Abstract:The accident at Chernobyl occurred in April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Union. The incident occurred during a scheduled safety test. A combination of inherent reactor design flaws and operators’ mistakes resulted in reactor’s No.4 disaster and the emission of a large quantity of radiation. The immediate actions involved the fire extinguishing, the cleanup of radioactive residues and the prevention of a new explosion. For this purpose, plenty of people worked with self-sacrifice. The people who lived nearby were removed. As far as the socio-economic impact for the Soviet Union is concerned, it was quite serious. Moreover, the environmental and human health consequences were also alarming with thyroid cancer being the most studied. Useful conclusions, especially for the safety both of reactors and nuclear power, as well as for the impact of radiation at ecosystems have been drawn. The debate about the use of nuclear power has remained open ever since.
The Russian radiation legacy: its integrated impact and lessons

Abstract:Information about the consequences of human exposure to radiation in the former Soviet Union has recently become available. These data add new insights and provide possible answers to several important questions regarding radiation and its impact on occupational and public health. The 1986 Chernobyl accident initiated a major and early increase in childhood thyroid cancer that resulted from ingestion of iodine-131 (131I) by young children living in the most heavily contaminated areas of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. No significant additional cancer or other adverse medical effects have yet been reported in the affected populations and among clean-up workers. Major psychological stress independent of radiation dose has been observed in those people thought to be exposed. During the early days of the atomic energy program in the former Soviet Union, some unfortunate events occurred. The country's first atomic test in Semipalatinsk in 1949 exposed over 25,000 people downwind from the blast to significant doses of fission products, especially 131I. During the late 1940s and the early 1950s nuclear material production facilities were developed near Chelyabinsk in the South Ural Mountains, which resulted in major releases into the environment and significant overexposures for thousands of workers and nearby populations. Chronic radiation sickness was observed early in exposed workers, and increases in leukemia and other cancers were also reported. The series of plutonium inhalation-related lung cancers and fatalities among workers exposed in that first decade appears to be unique. Long-term consequences of chronic radiation sickness and four decades of follow-up are being described for the first time. Villagers downstream from the plant consumed high levels of 137Cs and 90Sr and, it is reported, manifested increases in leukemia from internal and external exposures. Although the 40-year databases for retrospective dosimetry epidemiology studies are just beginning to be integrated and evaluated, preliminary evaluations suggest that there may be graded, significant dose-rate amelioration factors for cancer and leukemia risks in workers and the general population relative to the risk data on the Japanese atomic bomb survivors. Even for plutonium-induced lung cancers in workers, such a dose-rate effect may be evident. These experiences give us insight into the consequences of protracted radiation at high and low doses and rates. If these findings are validated and confirmed, they can provide information that reduces some of the uncertainties in retrospective radiation dosimetry and radiation risk estimates (especially for low-level, chronic exposures) for activities related to medicine as well as the handling of nuclear materials and nuclear facility decommissioning, decontamination, and demilitarization.
Environmental behavior of plutonium isotopes studied in the area affected by the Chernobyl accident

Abstract:The environmental behavior of Chernobyl-derived plutonium was reviewed in soil and aquatic environments in the affected areas of Ukraine. Dissolution of the released fuel particles marked the beginning of the migration in the environment for the Chernobyl-derived plutonium. Once dissolved, the plutonium distributed over the surface soil layer with low infiltration capacity. This relative immobility of plutonium in the soil environment is attributed to its affinity for soil organics, as suggested by previous studies of chemical partitioning. The relative immobility of plutonium was also seen in its fluvial transport along the Dnieper River. Dissolved organic matter, most probably humic substances, helped stabilize dissolved plutonium in the lake waters. Dissolved organic matter and purified humic substances in the area have been characterized for the fluorescence properties, molecular size distribution, functionality, and sources. Further analyses of the phase and chemical speciation of plutonium, taking into account the characterizations of matrices including humic substances, are needed to more fully understand the behavior of Chernobyl-derived plutonium, and to contribute to predict the migration of plutonium in other circumstances.

Abstract:The Nuclear Age began in 1945 with testing in New Mexico, USA, and the subsequent bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Regardless of attempts to limit the development of nuclear weapons, the current world arsenal has reached the staggering dimensions and presents a significant concern for the biosphere and mankind. In an explosion of a nuclear weapon, over 400 radioactive isotopes are released into the biosphere, 40 of which pose potential dangers including iodine, cesium, alkaline earths, and actinides. The immediate health effects of nuclear explosions include thermal, mechanical, and acute radiation syndrome. Long-term effects include radioactive fallout, internal contamination, and long-term genotoxicity. The current controversial concern over depleted uranium’s somatic and genetic toxicity is still a subject of worldwide sustained research. The host of data generated in the past decades has demonstrated conflicting findings, with the most recent evidence showing that its genotoxicity is greater than previously considered. Of particular concern are the osteotropic properties of uranium isotopes due to their final retention in the crystals of exchangeable and nonexchangeable bone as well as their proximity to pluripotent stem cells. Depleted uranium remains an unresolved issue in both warfare and the search for alternative energy sources.

War in Europe: health implications of environmental nuclear disaster amidst war

Abstract:Recent incidents at nuclear facilities in Ukraine related to the attacks from Russian forces highlight the fragility of nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities in war and the very real potential for another environmental nuclear disaster and associated health risks in Europe. Nuclear catastrophes from war can occur from radioactive materials released from war threatened nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities in war zones, in addition to the direct threat from the deployment of nuclear weaponry and can result in immediate and long-term health impacts. Despite historical nuclear catastrophic events, including the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and that for more than a century epidemiologists have studied the consequences of radiation exposures, there are still major unanswered questions regarding radiation risks and human health. Epidemiologists will need to continue to quantify the health effects from exposure to environmental radiation, including background radiation, and are able to contribute to conversations about reliance on nuclear energy and alternative energy futures. As a society we are compelled to rethink our ties to nuclear energy, especially with the potential of increasing reliance on nuclear power amid oil and gas crisis and considering climate change, nuclear warfare, including nuclear weapon testing, and the fragility of humanity and health to even low doses of radiation from these and other natural and unnatural sources.

Abstract:The Chernobyl accident of 1986 released vast quantities of radioactive materials and significantly contaminated about 200,000 square kilometers of land. The Chernobyl Forum Report, an initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency, suggested that the effects of radiation on wildlife were negligible relative to the impacts of human habitation, but this position was based on the very limited data available prior to this 2006 report. The wildlife of this region has been the subject of extensive study since 2005; since then, research has found that many birds, insects, spiders, and mammals show significant declines as a probable consequence of exposure to radionuclides. The best-studied group, birds, shows a 50 percent decrease in species richness and a 66 percent drop in abundance in the most contaminated areas compared to areas with normal background radiation in the same neighborhood. In addition, mutation rates and developmental abnormalities are dramatically higher, and survival rates and fertility are lower, in regions of moderate to high contamination. These findings challenge reports in the popular media and the conclusions of the Chernobyl Forum Report and are of relevance today, given recent interest in returning contaminated lands to agriculture use and the renaissance of the global nuclear power industry.

Two Major Nuclear Emergencies: A Comparison of Chernobyl and Fukushima

Abstract:In this chapter, various aspects of the two major reactor accidents at Chernobyl (1986; Ukrainian SSR) and Fukushima (2011; Japan) are discussed and compared. Both accidents have been ranked at the maximal level of 7 (“Major Accident”) at the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). The Chernobyl nuclear accident was caused by an unauthorized experiment in combination with design flaws of the RBMK reactor. The Fukushima nuclear accident was caused by a natural disaster (a tsunami that was triggered by an earthquake). Both accidents released radionuclides mostly of the volatile elements (Kr, Xe, I, Cs, Te), but Chernobyl also released significant amounts of less volatile radionuclides (Sr, Ru, lanthanides, actinides, etc.), mainly in the form of hot particles. Much larger areas have been contaminated by the Chernobyl accident than by Fukushima. The health effects due to the nuclear accidents have been much more severe for the residents of the Chernobyl area than for the residents of the Fukushima prefecture.
Investigation of Radionuclide Migration at Sites Adjacent to the 30-km Exclusion Zone of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Abstract:This paper reports the study of the vertical migration of radionuclides in soils at test sites adjacent to the 30-km Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The results of this effort demonstrate that the migration processes for studied pollution occur similarly to the fuel fallout behavior at the vicinity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) Unit 4. It was also observed that the main fallout component, 137Cs, originated from aerosol fallout and was bound in the surface layer. The authors determined a significant increase of 60Co, 94Nb, and 241Am radionuclide concentrations in soils near the ChNPP Unit 4 and suggested their appearance due to the installation of the New Safe Confinement. Niobium-94 activity is proposed as a marker for monitoring the "fresh" fallout in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Abstract:This paper investigates potential countermeasures to mitigate the disastrous effects of gammaradiation exposure in the event of a possible destruction of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,Ukraine’s largest nuclear facility, due to escalating conflicts. The potential destruction could resultin an unparalleled release of gamma radiation, posing significant threats to human health andthe environment. By examining the radiological dangers of gamma radiation, past case studiesof radiation exposure, current countermeasures, as well as the limitations and challenges of thesestrategies, we may provide a comprehensive overview of the multidimensional nature of thispotential crisis. Abstract:Natural iodine deficiency, which in some regions of Russia provokes thyroid diseases, increases the consequences of the entry of short-lived radioactive isotopes of this element into the food chain as a result of the Chernobyl accident (1986). The aim of the work is to assess the risk of morbidity of the population of the Kaluga, Bryansk and Oryol regions with thyroid cancer at the level of individual settlements based on experimental data. The iodine content in soils and vegetation cuttings of pastures in geochemically contrasting landscapes, as well as in cows' milk and potatoes of private household farms in the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident in 1986: Bryansk (2021), Oryol (2022) and Kaluga (2023) regions was studied. Joint expeditions of the Laboratory of Environmental Biogeochemistry of GEOKHI RAS and the Department of Human Ecology and Bioelementology of the Institute of Ecology of RUDN, carried out on the initiative and with the participation of the authors, revealed a significant variation of iodine concentration in soils and food products, which may be crucial for assessing the risk of thyroid diseases, including thyroid cancer, among the local rural population. The iodine content was found to be highly variable in both topsoil (0.31-3.04 mg/kg) and grass cuttings (0.14-0.29 mg/kg) of the study area. The maximum natural and technogenic risk of thyroid cancer morbidity in the rural population as a result of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident of 1986 is specific for the studied settlements of Zhizdrinsky district of Kaluga region, Bolkhovsky, Dmitrovsky and Sverdlovsky districts of Oryol region, Rognedinsky district of Bryansk region.
Products of Molten Corium-Metal Interaction in Chernobyl Accident Composition and Leaching of Radionuclides

Abstract:During initial stages of severe nuclear accident at Chernobyl NPP on 26 April 1986 interaction between U-oxide fuel and Zr-cladding has occurred and the corium melt (Zr-U-O) had been formed in a localized part(s) of reactor core. In this paper, we describe properties of unique set of samples formed during interaction of the corium melt with steel in the core, expelled from the reactor shaft into reactor premises and subsequently oxidized. These samples primarily consist of Fe-Cr oxides with inclusions of U- and Zr-based oxides. Uranium is heavily oxidized, forming U4 O9 and U3 O8 . Nb/Zr of the inclusions and presence of substantial Ni in the oxide matrix permits to trace the origin of the samples. It is suggested that the relevant corium was formed in interaction of liquefied fuel with Zr from walls of technological channels and/or guide rod, which subsequently reacted with precisely located steel parts. The differences in texture between the samples are ascribed to cooling regime and substrate on which the ejected melts were cooled. Remarkably, submicron particles of fission products (Pd, Ru, Tc, etc.), very rare for ChNPP samples, are observed. Their preservation is ascribed to highly oxidative conditions. Leaching of 137 Cs and Am in hot aqueous fresh and saline solutions was studied. High leach rates of these nuclides is assigned to highly oxidized state of U-containing phases. Results of the current study are compared with experiments on molten corium – vessel steel interaction and clarify some details of materials interaction during destruction of the reactor core of Chernobyl NPP.
The Chernobyl Reactor : Design Features and Reasons for Accident

Abstract:s The report describes the main features of the Chernobyl reactor and possible reasons of the accident that happened on 26 April 1986. Analysis of scientific results established after the accident demonstrates that shortcomings in the design, and freak infringements of safety regulations for the construction as well as inadequate documentation for reactor operation were the main reason of the Chernobyl accident. Various scenarios proposed for this accident are also analyzed in the report. It is concluded that a very high probability of the nuclear explosions at the reactor of the Unit 4 of the Chernobyl accident exists. The power of it could be equivalent to 200 tons of the trinitrotoluene (TNT). Introduction The accident at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on 26 April 1986 is the most severe accident in the history of the peaceful use of the nuclear energy. As a result of this accident the reactor of the fourth unit of the Chernobyl accident was fully destroyed. This caused a release of a very high amount of radioactive species into the environment. The total activity of all radionuclides that escaped from the active core of the reactor during 10 days after the explosions is assessed as approximately 10 Bq [1]. The reasons for the Chernobyl accident and its consequences were the subject of the Post-Accident Review Meeting held on 25-29 August 1986 in Vienna, Austria [2]. It was organized under the auspices of the IAEA. The Soviet experts reported at the meeting their version of the reasons of the accident as well as its possible consequences [3]. The accident occurred during a turbogenerator test carried out at the chance of the shutdown of the unit for a planned maintenance. The destruction of the reactor happened 6-7 seconds after the operator pressed the scram button, AZ-5 to insert all control rods into the core. According to the Soviet experts the prime cause of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP was “...an extremely improbable combination of violations of instructions and operating rules committed by the staff of the unit” [3]. This conclusion sets a full responsibility for the accident at the Chernobyl NPP on its stuff. Participants of the Post-Accident Review Meeting [2] also accepted the Soviet version. However, it was incorrect. This was demonstrated in 1990 by the commission of the State Committee for Atomic Safety Survey of the USSR which concluded that the main reasons of the Chernobyl accident were serious shortcomings in the design of the Chernobyl reactor as well as inadequate documents regulating a safe operation of the reactor [4]. Various errors, that were made during the turbogenerator testing by the personnel of the fours unit of the Chernobyl NPP, according to the commission, could only contribute to the development of the accident. This commission will be named in the present report as the Sternberg commission after the name of its chairman. The conclusions of the Sternberg commission were accepted later by the International Consultative Group on the Nuclear Safety that issued in 1993 a Supplement to INSAG-1 [5]. In this report of the International Consultative Group on the Nuclear Safety, the main accent was laid also on various shortcomings of the RBMK design. At the same time the International Consultative Group on the Nuclear Safety indicated that the important reason of the Chernobyl accident was an inadequate “nuclear safety
