Abstract:The author, following André Green, maintains that the two most original psychoanalytic thinkers since Freud were Donald Winnicott and Jacques Lacan. Winnicott, it has been said, introduced the comic tradition into psychoanalysis, while Lacan sustained Freud's tragic/ironic vision. Years of mutual avoidance by their followers (especially of Lacan by Anglophone clinicians) has arguably diminished understanding of the full spectrum of psychoanalytic thought. The author outlines some basic constructs of Winnicott and of Lacan, including: their organizing tropes of selfhood versus subjectivity, their views of the "mirror stage", and their definitions of the aims of treatment. While the ideas of Winnicott and Lacan appear at some points complementary, the goal is not to integrate them into one master discourse, but rather to bring their radically different paradigms into provocative contact. A clinical vignette is offered to demonstrate concepts from Lacan and Winnicott, illustrating what it might mean to think and teach in the potential space between them.

Abstract:Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Ahead of Print. This paper engages a Winnicottian formulation of the analytic field to highlight the often unspoken, implicit erotic dimensions of analytic work. Material from an analysis with a very inhibited, emotionally constricted man shows both patient and analyst encountering difficulty in "locating" each other within the analytic field. Paradoxically, a felt sense of connection was also palpable, and possibly/impossibly erotic. Movement in the treatment required the development of what the analyst came to think of as an "erotic sonar"—a "sounding" in the erotic body of each participant that could indicate the place of creative connection. A sensing in the body for the "feel" of the analytic dyad became a kinetic reading of emotional closeness or distance, as well as indicating the subtle, and shifting, tones of the relationship. Emphasis is placed on bodily experience in a subjective registering of the erotic, both as sexuality and as a more general experience of passion, vitality, and creativity.

Abstract:The author offers a creative reading of Winnicott's ( Citation 1967 ) "Mirror-role of mother and family in child development." Winnicott presents the idea that a pivotal experience in the process of the infant's coming into being as himself is the mother's communicating to the infant, by the look in her eyes, what she sees there when she looks at him. In the absence of the experience of being seen, the infant's capacity to feel real and alive atrophies. The author fleshes out Winnicott's thinking by suggesting that just as the infant comes more fully into being as he sees himself in his mother's eyes, so too, the mother comes more fully into being as a mother as she sees herself in the infant's eyes. The paradigm shift that Winnicott has contributed to psychoanalysis is reflected in the clinical work he presents: (1) the goal of psychoanalysis is no longer the enrichment of the patient's self-understanding; rather, the analytic goal is the patient's coming more fully alive to himself; and (2) the analyst helps the patient achieve this end not by making astute interpretations but by allowing the patient to experience the pleasure of making discoveries of his or her own.

Winnicott's invitation to 'further games of Jung-analysis'

Abstract:Winnicott signs off his celebrated review of Jung's (1963) autobiography Memories, Dreams, Reflections with the warning that translation of 'erreichten' as 'attained' (implying assimilation) rather than as 'reached to', could 'queer the pitch for further games of Jung-analysis'. This subtly underscores his view that Jung--who he described earlier as 'mentally split' and lacking 'a self with which to know'--remained essentially dissociated. However, Winnicott, whilst immersed in this work on Jung, wrote a letter to Michael Fordham describing himself as suffering 'a lifelong malady' of 'dissociation'. But this he now reported repaired through a 'splitting headache' dream of destruction, dreamt 'for Jung, and for some of my patients, as well as for myself' (Winnicott 1989, p. 228). Winnicott's recurrent concern during his last decade was with 'reaching to'--that quintessential Winnicottian term--some reparative experience that could address such difficulties in constellating a 'unit self'. This is correlated with his engagement with Jung and tracked through his contemporaneous clinical work, particularly 'Fear of Breakdown' (1963). Themes first introduced by Sedgwick (2008) and developed by the author's earlier 'Winnicott on Jung; destruction, creativity and the unrepressed unconscious' (2011) are given further consideration.
Winnicott and Lacan: a missed encounter?

Abstract:Winnicott was able to say that Lacan's paper on the mirror stage "had certainly influenced" him, while Lacan argued that he found his object a in Winnicott's transitional object. By following the development of their personal relations, as well as of their theoretical discussions, it is possible to argue that this was a missed encounter--yet a happily missed one, since the misunderstandings of their theoretical exchanges allowed each of them to clarify concepts otherwise difficult to discern.

Abstract:Winnicott's paper, "Playing, Creativity, and the Search for the Self," Chapter 4 of Playing and Reality is the second leg of Winnicott's two-part opus on play. It is the focus of Smadar Steinbock's essay on temporality in the work of Winnicott and Loewald. Winnicott's is a paper fundamentally about play. I suggest that for Winnicott, play always involves time, specifically the actual or feared loss of time or object, namely what I have referred to as the play of mourning. For Winnicott, temporality is inextricably bound with his notion of place. And they are both contained in the analytic setting. This is a setting that allows for the emergence of play and creative experiences of self, in time in general and for the time being. Like so many phenomena in Winnicott's theory building, time involves both actual or real time and time as incorporated psychically into the realm of illusion. Chapter 4 puts forward the ways that patient and analyst hold the paradox of time as actual and as incorporated into the realm of psychic illusion in order for the patient to be found.

Abstract:This paper offers a reflection and an open, experiential reading of one of Winnicott's most fascinating case studies. I try to show how the question of time in the psychoanalytical context emerges not only in relation to a deviation from the traditional setting but also concerns an axis inherent to some key therapeutic issues, such as the meaning of time and the temporal as a quality of holding in regression to dependency; or as a component in the transference experience or in the therapist's holding in mind of the patient's potential, through holding the future. The high frequency of meetings in psychoanalysis facilitates qualitative change, allowing patients and therapists to be in touch with deep, primitive strata of the psyche. Extending time in psychoanalytic treatment, therefore, whether as an ad hoc response to the patient's needs or as an extension of the setting, is tantamount to enabling a multi-layered experience of time across the spectrum of its manifestations. Attention to the temporal component in therapy and the experience of time in the transference is a valuable resource in our work. This paper contributes to the attempt to elaborate this dimension of psychoanalytic listening.

Abstract:This article contrasts the theories of ego formation put forward in Jacques Lacan's 'The Mirror Stage' and Donald Winnicott's 'The Mirror Role of the Mother,' and discusses their methodological implications for the field of American studies. While Lacan theorises subjectivity as irreparably split and (self-)alienated, Winnicott offers an optimistic version of a self which is sustained in its going-on-being by a nourishing maternal presence. These disparate conceptualisations of the human being produce two powerful frames through which to approach culture. Yet, while Lacan is widely recognised in the American studies scholarship, Winnicott remains virtually unknown. This article aims to enhance the visibility of the British author by outlining the productivity of his ideas for any cultural or literary analysis. By stressing the foundational significance of the primary bond Winnicott's theory intervenes in the recent critiques of neoliberal capitalism which remain halted in a Lacanian-like melancholic mode, masked by a cultural command of perpetual enjoyment. The Winnicottian perspective challenges Lacan's fixation on the unattainable objects of desire, reiterated by the neoliberal myth of self-perfection through consumption, and offers an alternative pattern of human sociality, based on relational, self-reflexive moderation.

Abstract:It was not so long ago, at least in the United States, that practitioners of the various mental health disciplines who were called upon to work side by side under the same roof were each consigned a signature task and turf. When we four editors of this journal were clocking our hours toward licensure in clinics and hospitals, psychiatrists were, almost always, the team leaders in clinical settings and the primary investigators in research. Social workers attended to systems: families, couples, groups, and to the agencies that provided social services. Psychologists were the data scientists proficient in psychotherapy as well as psychometrics and psychological assessment. Therapy was something we were invited to augment with empirical research, perhaps with some background in philosophy and social science.

Abstract:When Donald W. Winnicott conceived his psychoanalytical concepts and theories, initially meant to address problems associated with the relationship between a mother and her child, the British paediatrician was aware they could be meaningful for understanding cultural issues too. One of the key questions when dealing with literature as a form of culture is to what extent the representation of the self in it is true or false. Winnicott’s theory of transitional objects – items used to provide psychological comfort – can operate as a significant critical tool when trying to answer such questions. This paper firstly explores the reception of Winnicott’s theory of transitional objects and phenomena and other associated concepts in literary criticism. It moves further to demonstrate it is especially relevant when literature travels or deals with international migration. Last but not least, it presents several possible limitations for the field of literary criticism, taking into consideration contemporary theories about the location of culture.

Abstract:Drawing on the writing of Freud, Klein, Riviere, Winnicott, Bion, and others, this article highlights two rather different war-time and post-war changes occurring in psychoanalysis regarding ambivalence: first, the shift of psychoanalytic attention from the repressed unconscious to introjection and projection of love and hate and their effects on objects in our inner world; second, the contrary shift of psychoanalysis from attention to the individual pleasure and pain of love and hate to mothering, and to intersubjective knowing and truth.

Abstract:This essay explores the place of infantile sexuality in the theories of Anna Freud and Donald W Winnicott. Both Anna Freud and D.W. Winnicott incorporated and at the same time changed the classical psychoanalytic account of infantile sexuality and the instinctual drives. Whilst Anna Freud remained closer to her father's original conceptualization, she developed a multidimensional model of development which gave the drives a foundational status whist also maintaining their significance in giving meaning and texture to children's subjective experience. Winnicott also retained much of S. Freud's original theorizing except that in a fundamental way he turned it on its head when considering earliest development. For him the establishment of the self was paramount, and the drives and infantile sexuality merely served to give substance to that self.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Fulgencio shows how Winnicott rejected the basic speculative concepts of Freud's metapsychology - Trieb, psychical apparatus and libido - and replaced them with non-speculative concepts that promoted a factual theorization. In this paper, the author examines some of Winnicott's concepts and attempts to demonstrate how, rather than replacing Freud's concepts, he provides a factual foundation for the metapsychology in the double dependence of the infant in care. Freud never actually disregards the necessity of early mothering but he takes it for granted. By differentiating between ego needs and id needs, ego-relatedness and id-relatedness, object-mother and environment-mother, Winnicott attempts to theorize what Freud takes for granted: the function of the holding environment as a framework for id-experiences and the function of object-presenting as a condition of reality-testing. Furthermore, by differentiating between pure male and pure female elements, he is also able to construct a highly speculative theorization in order to distinguish two basic principles: doing and being. Although the death drive is clearly rejected, this rejection follows from his theorization of double dependence. Consequently, the author suggests that Winnicott did not discard metapsychological concepts but theorized the conditions for using both these and the intrapsychic topography.

Abstract:Abstract: This article reads Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868) against nineteenth-century mothering manuals and the psychoanalytic object-relations theory to argue that the novel links maternal rage with infanticide. Feminist scholars have noted how Little Women , though ostensibly a story of family harmony, conceals a deep vein of anger. Jo March's trajectory, like that of other nineteenth-century sentimental heroines, stages a transformation from rebellious tomboy to self-controlled angel-in-the-house. Attending to the ways in which the text persistently links anger to infanticide, this article shows how the idealized angel-in-the-house functioned as an idealized solution to guard against the imagined dangers of female rage. Moreover, the binary between angel mothers and infanticidal ones was inflected with racial meaning that served to distinguish who was and wasn't included under the umbrella of national belonging. In recovering the spectre of infanticide subtending Little Women , this article asks us to re-evaluate the ways that cultural texts transmitted messages about love and rage and the political implications of how such relationships to affect determined the lives and developmental trajectories of children.

Abstract:Poetry captures that which lies beyond words. It expresses the rhythms and silences of music reaching areas of experience that exist outside the restrictions of simple prose. In terms of the treatment of poetry in the pages of the IJP and the IRP since their inception, we encounter a commanding story of the history of psychoanalysis itself. In the life of these two journals, we trace a massive shift from "victimisation of literature by psychoanalytic interpreters", as Wilfred Bion described it, to genuine enlightenment. That is, the pages of the journals confirm the rather bleak oversimplifications of many of the early articles, by contrast to the more contemporary psychoanalytic insights into the nature of creativity and the centrality of meaning in psychic and artistic life. The move is towards the aesthetic: towards the relationship between form and content and towards the poetic becoming a vital dimension of understanding the unconscious itself.

Abstract:The work of producing a peer-reviewed journal involves keeping on top of a whirlwind of moving parts. We recruit submissions, assign reviewers, shepherd writers through the process of revising their articles for publication, and invite discussants to engage dynamically with the authors. Curating issues allows us to stand back and witness the scope and breadth of current writing in psychoanalysis. It's important to us to represent the range and diversity of voices, emerging and established, within our field. Thumb through the major journals, new format magazines, and newsletters; listen to podcasts and view short format videos, and it will be clear that it is a very demanding task, as one of our readers recently put it, to "hold the center."
