The book sensibly does not argue that Hamlet’s Catholic nostalgia is proof of its author’s recusancy, and Curran’s learned and often subtle readings of nonShakespearean primary texts enrich many of the analyses he provides, especially of the “Strumpet Fortune” (chapter 5) and the ghost. The overall claim that both Hamlet and its central protagonist are devotionally conflicted rings true, but the play does not open its mysteries in response to the book’s application of puzzling, schematic characterizations of Protestantism and Catholicism. This may be partly because the play itself studiously refuses to define exactly what is Protestant and what is Catholic in Elsinore—a refusal that has generated countless subtle, suggestive, although often contradictory readings of confessional identity in Hamlet. Indeed, it may be in that refusal that Hamlet most fully and hauntingly depicts the theological, emotional, and psychological aftermath of the Reformation.

Abstract:A M L E T is a highly personal play. We bring to it all that we are. As L. C. Knights has observed, “more than with any other play, critics are in danger of finding reflected what they bring with them.”l The gratifications of interpretation may turn out to be gratifications of another sort; instead of serving the play, we are likely to make it serve us. Kenneth Muir, commenting on C. S . Lewis’ view of Hamlet, emphasizes this danger: “It was inevitable, Lewis thinks, that Coleridge should ascribe to Hamlet his own weaknesses; it was equally inevitable that the pacifists should regard Hamlet as a pacifist, and that the Freudians should diagnose their favourite complex. To Lewis, the explanation is that Hamlet is not an individual at all, but Everyman, haunted by the fear of being dead, and burdened by original sin. But Lewis’s theory, ingenious as it is, invites the retort that he too, the amateur theologian, has saddled Hamlet with his own prepossessions.’’2 Both protagonist and play, one may add, have appealed to one of our current prepossessions. Valuing multiplicity of meaning as we do, we hold Hamlet in our heart of hearts. It is a play in which many meanings dance. And, of course, since Hamlet has so much in it, critics are encouraged to find more -something overlooked, misconstrued, or imperfectly sensed by previous writers. Abstract:In expounding Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a trio of important plots comes to the top with great significance; the revenge plot, the Hamlet-Ophelia romance story, and Norway’s looming war. The trio of significant plots has laid the first stone for Hamlet to procrastinate the act of revenge as it is undone until the final act of Shakespeare’s drama. On the other hand, Hamlet’s playwright gives a picture of the tradition’s direct reference using the literary device Metadrama, i.e. the play within the play exemplified by The Murder of Gonzago. Attaining true justice for his father’s murder, Hamlet beautifies The Murder of Gonzago with grim insistence; Hamlet is determined to recognize the culprit behind the death of his father. Having this uneasy mission comes true causes Hamlet to ponder and slow down about various things. Along these lines, Hamlet goes through a slow decision process to revenge on his father’s murderer. Consequently, various deaths happen, namely: Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Laertes, and Gertrude. Shakespeare’s exposition of various characters incapable of revenging heroically and determinedly draws a picture of Hamlet’s incapability to promptly avenge. Laertes, for example, plots to murder Hamlet to avenge for murdering Polonius, Laertes’s father, and in the last part of this play, Laertes successfully kills Hamlet with the poisonous sword. As various studies focus on the issues of romance, politics, and throne successions using descriptive and historical approaches, this study using the analytical approach, however, demonstrates Hamlet as a play structured on revenge, as the whole revenge events are appropriately incorporated by Shakespeare.
"What to do with so much sorrow?". Art and the Purpose of Revenge in Margaret Atwood's Hag-Seed

Abstract:Margaret Atwood's Hag-Seed is a postmodern, post-Christian reinterpretation of Shakespeare's Tempest, staging Felix Phillips as Prospero in the context of 21st century Canada. The nature of Prospero's morality has been an important subject in academic discussion, which can broadly be categorised into "the Artist" and "the Avenger". Atwood's allocation of Felix as an avenger and principle agent of his profane purpose, which entails a metafictional, druginfused production of The Tempest to cause his enemies to suffer in retaliation, provides reflections on the nature of revenge and morality in our current society. Furthermore, Felix's narrative incorporates two backstories which unfold the origin of his thirst for vengeance: his termination as Artistic Director ensued the traumatic loss of his wife and daughter. Felix will undergo a journey of healing through his artistic creativity culminating in his ability to face his grief and, ultimately, forgive himself. Therefore, in this present-day interpretation of The Tempest, art replaces the supernatural power to restore justice and grant absolution to its characters.

Abstract:A standard interpretation of the character of Hamlet is that he is indecisive, even pathologically so, and that his indecisiveness is manifested by the lengthy passage of time between when Hamlet is told that his father's death was a murder and when he kills the perpetrator. Rational choice in economics concerns the connection between means and ends. A person is rational if, given her ends (her goals), she chooses reasonable means to achieve those ends. With uncertainty, a bad (or tragic) outcome can occur even when the best decision is taken. A reasonable approach to achieving one's goal does not imply that the goal is attained. In Shakespeare's Hamlet , the fact that most of the main characters, including Hamlet, meet untimely deaths is, therefore, not sufficient to conclude that Hamlet (or any other character) engages in less-than-rational behavior. This article examines Hamlet's actions through the lens of rational choice. Hamlet's delay in seeking revenge, combined with his interest in collecting more evidence of the alleged assailant's guilt, comports well with economic rationality. The common view of Hamlet as indecisive, as someone who incorrectly substitutes deliberation for action, is unwarranted.

Abstract:Abstract: Occupying a central place in Jacques Derrida’s formulation of hauntology, Hamlet ’s Ghost is familiar to contemporary performance theory, standing in for the secondariness and self-division that define dramatic representation. But there was another figure more emblematic of performance in the early modern English playhouse: the revenant. Examining the convention of resurrection as it was frequently deployed in this theatre, this essay uncovers the capacity of the revenant to generate presence, the visceral sense of theatrical immediacy first championed by Antonin Artaud. Following readings of The Second Maiden’s Tragedy and Hamlet , it concludes with a coda on James Ijames’s Fat Ham (2023), a play that adopts the early modern theatre’s resurrective praxis of presence.

Hamlet and Pure Object Revenge – The Matter of Life and Death

Abstract:Why do we strike intrinsically inoffensive objects when they intrude upon our lives? Why, for example, do we kick the car when it breaks down, or slap the chair that pinches our finger against the table, or strike the open door that collides with our head? In this essay, I ask whether this phenomenon, which I call the performance of "pure object revenge", might arise from an impulse to execute vindicatory, and in that sense vengeful, justice upon the offending object. My new explanation for the phenomenon is that we strike the offending object because it has no life but has briefly acted as if it were alive. It therefore reminds us in the brief moment of its offence that our bodies are also inanimate dust and will return to dust and in the meantime are only briefly animated. In short, my argument is that we strike the object because it is a memento mori. To test and support this, I offer a reading of the "closet scene" at the centre of Shakespeare's Hamlet to illustrate the performative impulse to banish inanimate objects at the threshold of the living and the dead.

Abstract:One of the most prolific fields of Shakespeare studies in the past two decades has been the exploration of local appropriations of Shakespeare’s plays around the world. This article, however, foregrounds a peculiar case of an avoidance of local appropriation. For almost 60 years, repertory Israeli theaters mostly refused to let Hamlet reflect the “age and body of the time”. They repeatedly invited Europeans to direct Hamlet in Israel and offered local audiences locally-irrelevant productions of the play. They did so even though local productions of canonical plays in Israel tend to be more financially successful than those directed by non-Israelis, and even when local national and political circumstances bore a striking resemblance to the plot of the play. Conversely, when one Israeli production of Hamlet (originating in an experimental theatre) did try to hold a mirror up to Israeli society—and was indeed understood abroad as doing so—Israeli audiences and theatre critics failed to recognize their reflection in this mirror. The article explores the various functions that Hamlet has served for the Israeli theatre: a rite of passage, an educational tool, an indication of belonging to the European cultural tradition, a means of boosting the prestige of Israeli theatres, and—only finally—a mirror reflecting Israel’s “age and body.” The article also shows how, precisely because Hamlet was not allowed to reflect local concerns, the play mirrors instead the evolution of the Israeli theatre, its conflicted relation to the Western theatrical tradition, and its growing self-confidence.

Abstract:This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, employing Terry Eagleton's conception of tragedy from his book Sweet Violence. It examines how the play achieves excellence through wisdom, intellectual depth, and emotional maturity, exposing the sublimity of human effort in creating an enduring experience for the audience. The paper delves into the elements of sacrifice, the dilemma of the tragic hero, and the concept of tragedy as a genre with emotional impact, showcasing the influential nature of the play. Furthermore, it explores the intertwining of external accidents with the hero's struggles and the balance of universality and particularity in evoking sympathy and engagement within the audience. Additionally, it discusses Eagleton’s notion of tragedy as a means to offer political hope and belief in justice and redemption, even in the darkest of times. The analysis examines Hamlet's fit in both traditionalist and democratic perspectives and finally delves into the Greek concept of the pharmakos, highlighting why Hamlet's suffering leads to emotional cleansing or katharsis for the audience.

Abstract:Taking sixteen Shakespearean adaptations by eight playwrights as the object of study, Chen Hongwei's book Shakespeare in the Post-war English Drama ( published by Peking University Press in April, 2019) carries forth an analysis of the forms of Shakespeare's presence in the Post-War English drama from the aspect of contemporary adaptation theories. In Methodology, the research is an interdisciplinary study which covers drama study, culture study, adaptation theory study and cross-media study. In contents, the book is composed of four parts, including "What is adaptation? Why do we make adaptation?", "Adaptation/rewriting: critical dialogues with Shakespeare," "Variations of Shakespeare's remains in the English drama" and " Who writes Shakespeare?". Through its research, the book argues that though the critical consensus on the Bard's authority has been crumbled in the past decades with his mythical presence being disrupted in every possible way, Shakespeare has never been so vigorously alive in the disguised presence of adaptations in the piles of fragments and shatters that he is reduced to.

Abstract:The versatility of the appropriation of Shakespeare in recent years has been witnessed in a variety of registers and media, which range from special effects on the stage, music, cartoons, comics, advertisements, all the way to video games. This contribution looks at some of the novels in the Shakespeare Re-told Hogarth series as effigies of the contemporary process of adapting the Elizabethan plays to the environments in which the potential readers/viewers work, become informed, seek entertainment and adjust themselves culturally, being, ultimately, cognitive schemes which are validated by today’s reception processes. The first novel in the series was Jeanette Winterson’s Gap of Time (2016), in which the Shakespearean reference to the years that separate the two moments of The Winter’s Tale’s plot becomes the title of a video game relying mainly on fantasy. Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed (2016) rewrites The Tempest as a parable of the theatrical performance and its avatars, as undisputable authority, on the one hand, and source of subversiveness, on the other. Dunbar (2018) is Edward St. Aubyn’s response to the family saga of King Lear, where kingship, territorial division and military conflict are replaced by modern media wars, and the issues of public exposure in the original text are reinterpreted interpreted by resorting to the impact of the audio-visual on every-day life.

Abstract:Among the points of superiority which distinguish the plays of Shakespeare from those of most Elizabethan dramatists, none is more obvious and more easily demonstrable than the firmly built plan, the clear construction which sets in strong relief a dominant dramatic idea. In the poet's mature tragedies, this dominant idea is always a development of what Professor Dowden calls “the fatality of character.” The protagonist is hurried to the catastrophe, not so much by the irresistible force of external events, as by some defect, or some enfeebling excess in his own spiritual constitution. From the analogy of the other plays, therefore, we should expect in Hamlet to find little or no emphasis laid upon external hindrances to the execution of the prescribed revenge, but rather the accentuation of a purely subjective hesitancy inherent in the emotional and intellectual habits of the man himself.

Abstract:Abstract Completing his trilogy of adaptations of Shakespearean tragedies, Indian director Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Haider (2014) tackles Hamlet. A generic fusion of realist drama, Bollywood movie, and espionage thriller, the film intersects the Elizabethan source text’s revenge plot with intertextual references to journalist Basharat Peer’s contemporary war memoir Curfewed Nights (2011), detailing the realities in insurgency-torn Kashmir in the 1990s. Taking its cue from the film’s controversial reception, which runs the gamut from censorship, appraisals, and criticism that Indian film does not need the ‘crutch’ of Hamlet to claim attention, this article explores questions about border-crossing, violence, and reconciliation raised on the level of form and content. Haider presents an adaptation of not one but two source texts: one ‘global’ and one ‘local’. The result, this article argues, is astonishingly harmonious and the contested metaphors of adaptation theory and global Shakespeare studies, such as ‘appropriation’ or ‘indigenization’, apply less to it than that of a transcultural ‘contact zone’ (Pratt, Mary Louise. Imperial Eyes. Travel Writing and Transculturation, 2nd. ed. London and New York: Routledge, 2008) and of a ‘crossmapping’ (Bronfen, Elisabeth. Crossmappings. On Visual Culture. London and New York: I.B. Tauris, 2018). By placing greater emphasis on communality and having the ending turn from revenge to forgiveness, Haider interrogates the transcultural appeal of Hamlet, drawing attention to histories of violent conflict. It also reveals a revisionist agenda that captures both hidden political realities and a haunting refiguration of Shakespeare.
