Abstract:This article approaches the Buddhist moral (sila) to business ethics, with moral values of innate sense of moral dread and shame (hiri-ottappa) as the basis for doing business. Buddhist philosophy originates with the teachings of the Buddha (588 BCE). Every human has free will to think, speak, and act ethically by undoing evil, cultivating goodness, and purifying the mind as the core of the Buddha Dharma. This literature review emphasizes Buddhist virtues with a naturalist focus, the value of compassion for all life; humanist, human values; and altruist, caring values to benefit others. The impact of these values (Tzu Kuang, 2015) is called the ten globally shared, which are build upon the equality and dignity of humanity by mutual co-existence, the honor, riches, joy, serenity, awakening, ownership, achievements; prosperity and success are shared mutual.

Abstract:The second volume of Ethics for a Digital Age edited by Bastiaan Vanacker and Don Heider (2018) highlights research presented at the fifth and sixth Annual International Symposia on Digital Ethics. The volume features ten essays organized under three banner topics that include 1) Trust, Privacy, and Corporate Responsibility; 2) Technology, Ethics, and the Shifting Role of Journalism; and 3) Ethics and Ontology. Together, the essays aim to invigorate conversations about ethical issues in professional and philosophical contexts. In this review, I first provide a synopsis of each section and its corresponding essays to give readers a sense of the depth and breadth of topics covered in the volume. I conclude the review by identifying themes that unite the essays and broadly contribute to this robust field of inquiry.

Thus, while most of her readers are familiar with Augustinian and Thomistic theodicies, B. explains to non-specialists how Origen’s “two creations theory,” according to which humans spiritually have choice despite the ex nihilo creation of the physical world, opens the door for free will among the Church Fathers (49–50), or shows how a Kierkegaardian teleological suspension of the ethical in the self’s bid to become authentic can also be creatively construed as the overcoming of boredom, “the root of all evil” (147). Yet B.’s broad treatment sometimes misses critical details. For example, this very phrase from Either/Or is in fact voiced by a pseudonym, the aesthete Johannes the Seducer, not Kierkegaard himself. B. also occasionally forces connections to preserve historical continuity. Her section on “literary explorations in the Nineteenth Century,” where she ties liberal Protestantism to the gothic literature of the Romantics, seems a particularly hard sell (146–48). Finally, some critical works are not treated, such as the most poignant of the empirically sensitive, nonspeculative theodicies of the modern era, C. S. Lewis’s A Grief Observed, where Lewis ties flourishing to pain in a manner which could have served as an effective rejoinder to Leibniz’s Enlightenment “best of all possible worlds” defense of the divine. Nevertheless, for clarity of classic texts as varied as the Book of Job (12–14), Augustine’s City of God (65–66), Luther’s The Bondage of the Will (96), and even John Hick’s seminal God of Love from the twentieth century (171–73), one could scarcely write more succinctly or accessibly than B. has done. In the end, the case for a “trajectory,” the explicit purpose of the volume as indicated by its subtitle, is duly made.

From Ethical Criticism To Ethical Literary Criticism: A Preface To American Ethical Criticism: A Survey

Abstract:The 1980s witnessed the refreshing of ethical turn in studies of literature and philosophy and thus the reviving of American ethical criticism. American Ethical Criticism: A Survey by Yang Gexin is the first monograph focusing on the evolvement of western ethical criticism. Firstly, the monograph explores the necessity and possibility of American ethical criticism on the basis of a detailed review on the close relation between literature and ethics as well as the practices of moral criticism. Then, it generalizes the reasons and characteristics of ethical turn in literary researches of the 1980s, discusses the main ideas of three critics who made important contribution to the renaissance of ethical criticism, and analyzes the main figures of new humanism ethical criticism and deconstructionism ethical criticism from aspects of theoretical foundations, main concepts, and critical practices. Finally, it makes a brief review on the reception of American ethical criticism in China, and then explores its reconstruction and perfection. The author believes that the ethical literary criticism, initiated by Chinese scholars, perfects American ethical criticism in theory by proving that literature grows out of the ethical demand and the ethical function is primary while the aesthetic one is secondary, and in practice by defining a set of new critical terms and illustrating their application.

Abstract:Religion is widely regarded as a social force that shapes entrepreneurship and business (EB) activity, behavior, and practice. However, a holistic review of religion and EB literature remains elusive, which could impede the field's advancement when competing arguments are introduced and pure replications are pursued. Therefore, this study conducts a technology-empowered systematic literature review using a combination of fit-for-purpose bibliometric software to examine the state of the literature on religion and EB research. The review reveals that existing research in the field have mainly focused on how religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam influence consumerism, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, leadership orientation, organizational culture, financial and social ethics, and socioeconomic development, and that future research can enrich the field by investigating religion in tandem with business education, marketing, economics and public policy, and cognitive characteristics and behavioral inclinations, as well as the reversed influence of EB on religious orientation.

Abstract:This systematic literature review explores the implications of implementing Islamic ethical principles in Good Corporate Governance (GCG) within the context of Islamic financial institutions. The study investigates the relevance and impact of Islamic ethics on various aspects of corporate governance, including accountability, transparency, justice, and stakeholder welfare. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of existing literature, the research identifies key themes and findings related to the integration of Islamic ethical values into GCG practices. The study highlights the significance of aligning corporate governance structures with Sharia principles to ensure ethical conduct, transparency, and stakeholder trust. However, the research also acknowledges several limitations, such as data availability constraints, geographic focus, cultural and social contexts, and methodological considerations. To address these limitations, future research directions are suggested, emphasizing the need for broader data sources, cross-cultural analyses, and diverse research methodologies to deepen understanding and enhance the applicability of findings in diverse organizational settings.
Bringing Excitement to Empirical Business Ethics Research: Thoughts on the Future of Business Ethics

Abstract:To commemorate 40 years since the founding of the Journal of Business Ethics, the editors-in-chief of the journal have invited the editors to provide commentaries on the future of business ethics. This essay comprises a selection of commentaries aimed at creating dialog around the theme Bringing Excitement to Empirical Business Ethics Research (inspired by the title of the commentary by Babalola and van Gils). These editors, considering the diversity of empirical approaches in business ethics, envisage a future in which quantitative business ethics research is more bold and innovative, as well as reflexive about its techniques, and dialog between quantitative and qualitative research nourishes the enrichment of both. In their commentary, Babalola and van Gils argue that leadership research has stagnated with the use of too narrow a range of perspectives and methods and too many overlapping concepts. They propose that novel insights could be achieved by investigating the lived experience of leadership (through interviews, document analysis, archival data); by focusing on topics of concern to society; by employing different personal, philosophical, or cultural perspectives; and by turning the lens on the heroic leader (through "dark-side" and follower studies). Taking a provocative stance, Bal and Garcia-Lorenzo argue that we need radical voices in current times to enable a better understanding of the psychology underlying ethical transformations. Psychology can support business ethics by not shying away from grander ideas, going beyond the margins of "unethical behaviors harming the organization" and expanding the range of lenses used to studying behavior in context. In the arena of finance and business ethics, Guedhami, Liang, and Shailer emphasize novel data sets and innovative methods. Significantly, they stress that an understanding the intersection of finance and ethics is central to business ethics; financial equality and inclusion are persistent socio-economic and political concerns that are not always framed as ethics issues, yet relevant business policies and practices manifest ethical values. Finally, Charles Cho offers his opinion on the blurry line between the "ethical" versus "social" or "critical" aspects of accounting papers. The Journal of Business Ethics provides fertile ground for innovative, even radical, approaches to quantitative methods (see Zyphur and Pierides in J Bus Ethics 143(1):1-16, 10.1007/s10551-017-3549-8, 2017), as part of a broad goal of ethically reflecting on empirical research.

This essay comprises a selection of commentaries aimed at creating dialogue around the theme Business versus Ethics? (inspired by the title of the commentary by Jeffrey Harrison). The authors of these commentaries seek to transcend the age-old separation fallacy (Freeman in Bus Ethics Q 4(4):409–421, 1994) that juxtaposes business and ethics/society, posing a forced choice or trade off. Providing a contemporary take on the classical question "if it's legal is it ethical?", David Hess explores the role of the law in promoting or hindering stakeholder-oriented purpose and governance structure. Jeffrey Harrison encourages scholars to move beyond the presupposition that businesses are either strategic or ethical and explore important questions at the intersection of strategy and ethics. The proposition that business models might be inherently ethical or inherently unethical in their design is developed by Sheila Killian, who examines business systems, their morality, and who they serve. However, the conundrum that entrepreneurs are either lauded for their self-belief and risk-taking, or loathed for their self-belief and risk-taking, is discussed by M. Tina Dacin and Julia Roloff using the metaphor of taboos and totems. These commentaries seek to explore positions that advocate multiplicity and tensions in which business ethics is not either/or but both.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to give an account of some of the current areas of scholarship in business ethics and to suggest how these areas may be relevant for scholars working in other business disciplines. We endeavor to paint a picture of a healthy discipline full of controversy, rich intellectual discussions, and the beginnings of several research traditions. To begin, we examine how it is common practice to think of ‘business’ and ‘ethics’ as separate entities, and suggest how such a ‘separation thesis’ can be used to diagnose problems in a host of business disciplines. We next examine the literature on corporate agency and responsibility that questions whether or not a corporation can be said to be normally accountable, in the same way that individual moral agents can be held accountable, and we look at an emerging research tradition of ‘stakeholder theory’ that cuts across the disciplines of business. We then explore two contemporary issues in business ethics: (1) International Business Ethics; and, (2) Environmental Ethics and Business, and we conclude with suggestions for some additional research questions.

Abstract:Using 94 published empirical articles in academic journals as a data base, this paper provides a critical review of the methodology employed in the study of ethical beliefs and behavior of organizational members. The review revealed that full methodological detail was provided in less than one half of the articles. Further, the majority of empirical research articles expressed no concern for the reliability or validity of measures, were characterized by low response rates, used convenience samples, and did not offer a theoretic framework, hypotheses, or a definition of ethics. Several recommendations, including a reviewer rating form addressing methodological decisions and inclusion of methodologists on the review panel, are offered to improve methodological rigor in published ethics research.

Abstract:Philosophers have constituted business ethics as a field by providing a systematic overview that interrelates its problems and concepts and that supplies the basis for building on attained results. Is there a properly theological task in business ethics? The religious/theological literature on business ethics falls into four classes: (1) the application of religious morality to business practices; (2) the use of encyclical teachings about capitalism; (3) the interpretation of business relations in agapa-istic terms; and (4) the critique of business from a liberation theological point of view. Theologians have not adequately addressed the questions of whether there are particular theological tasks in the field as they define it, and whether, if they define it, the theological definition is different from the philosophical.

Abstract:Various problems related to today's business ethics have increasingly developed with the emergence of easy access to available social media. The spread of ethical issues in business can significantly affect the quality and popularity of a company. The application of good business ethics will certainly help the company to be able to continue to survive and advance in the current era of increasingly inadequate technology. The purpose of this study is to describe how business ethics should exist in a company. This scoping study aims to examine the literature regarding the most relevant and significant aspects of business ethics in entrepreneurship, as well as the methods used in related research. This study searches multiple databases for articles published between 2012 and 2023. The results of the study show that the contribution of business ethics is needed to improve the quality of company development. The existence of the application of good business ethics will help the company achieve its vision and mission in accordance with what is expected.

Abstract:Abstract The field of behavioral ethics has seen considerable growth over the last few decades. One of the most significant concerns facing this interdisciplinary field of research is the moral judgment-action gap. The moral judgment-action gap is the inconsistency people display when they know what is right but do what they know is wrong. Much of the research in the field of behavioral ethics is based on (or in response to) early work in moral psychology and American psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg’s foundational cognitive model of moral development. However, Kohlberg’s model of moral development lacks a compelling explanation for the judgment-action gap. Yet, it continues to influence theory, research, teaching, and practice in business ethics today. As such, this paper presents a critical review and analysis of the pertinent literature. This paper also reviews modern theories of ethical decision making in business ethics. Gaps in our current understanding and directions for future research in behavioral business ethics are presented. By providing this important theoretical background information, targeted critical analysis, and directions for future research, this paper assists management scholars as they begin to seek a more unified approach, develop newer models of ethical decision making, and conduct business ethics research that examines the moral judgment-action gap.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to the discussion of how religious perspectives can improve business ethics. Two such perspectives are in natural law of antiquity and recent Catholic social doctrine and teaching (CSD/T). This paper develops a conceptual framework from natural law and CSD/T that business leaders can adopt to build an ethos of humanistic management. This “Human Dignity-Centered” framework fills the gap between time-tested Christian norms and contemporary firm-leaders’ concrete needs. “Human dignity” is used as a rhetorical device to convey the idea that firms are composed of dynamic social networks, with an ultimate purpose of serving human needs. Ultimately, the principles and virtues the framework employs have a logic that should inspire excellence, as ethical practices and concern for human welfare lay a foundation for long-term business prosperity. In a one-frame visual representation, this paper portrays: firm leadership challenges; a transforming ethical prism of principles and virtues; and results and feedback mechanisms. The accompanying narrative describes each element and how each affects humanistic management. Finally, illustrative company examples and questions are provided to illustrate how the framework can be used to benefit human flourishing. The framework provides an adjunct to current formulations of improving managerial excellence.

Abstract:Confucian ethics as applied to the study of business ethics often relate to the micro consideration of personal ethics and the character of a virtuous person. Actually, Confucius and his school have much to say about the morals of the public administration and the market institutions in a more macro level. While Weber emphasizes the role of culture on the development of the economy, and Marx the determining influence of the material base on ideology, we see an interaction between culture – specifically Confucian business ethics – and the economy. In this paper, we are going to study this interaction in several crucial stages of development of Confucianism. The paper concludes by postulating the relevance of Confucian business ethics to the global knowledge economy.
