Abstract:We study experimentally and computationally the dynamics of granular flow during impacts, where intruders strike a collection of disks from above. In the regime where granular force dynamics are much more rapid than the intruder motion, we find that the particle flow near the intruder is proportional to the instantaneous intruder speed; it is essentially constant when normalized by that speed. The granular flow is nearly divergence-free and remains in balance with the intruder, despite the latter's rapid deceleration. Simulations indicate that this observation is insensitive to grain properties, which can be explained by the separation of time scales between intergrain force dynamics and intruder dynamics. Assuming there is a comparable separation of time scales, we expect our results are applicable to a broad class of dynamic or transient granular flows. Our results suggest that descriptions of static-in-time granular flows might be extended or modified to describe these dynamic flows. Additionally, we find that accurate grain-grain interactions are not necessary to correctly capture the granular flow in this regime.

Abstract:The most difficult aspect of the realistic modeling of granular materials is how to capture the real shape of the particles. Here we present a method to simulate granular materials with complex-shaped particles. The particle shape is represented by the classical concept of a Minkowski sum, which permits the representation of complex shapes without the need to define the object as a composite of spherical or convex particles. A well defined interaction force between these bodies is derived. The algorithm for identification of neighbor particles reduces force calculations to O(N), where $N$ is the number of particles. The algorithm is much more efficient, accurate and easier to implement than other models. We investigate the existence of a statistical equilibrium in granular systems with circular non-spherical particles in the collisional. regime. We also investigate the limit state of dissipative granular materials using biaxial test simulations. The results are consistent with the classical assumption of the statistical mechanics for non-dissipative systems, and the critical state theory of soils mechanics for dissipative granular materials.
Intrusion in heterogeneous materials: Simple global rules from complex micro-mechanics

Abstract:The interaction of intruding objects with deformable materials is a common phenomenon, arising in impact and penetration problems, animal and vehicle locomotion, and various geo-space applications. The dynamics of arbitrary intruders can be simplified using Resistive Force Theory (RFT), an empirical framework originally used for fluids but works surprisingly well, better in fact, in granular materials. That such a simple model describes behavior in dry grains, a complex nonlinear material, has invigorated a search to determine the underlying mechanism of RFT. We have discovered that a straightforward friction-based continuum model generates RFT, establishing a link between RFT and local material behavior. Our theory reproduces experimental RFT data without any parameter fitting and generates RFT's key simplifying assumption: a geometry-independent local force formula. Analysis of the system explains why RFT works better in grains than in viscous fluids, and leads to an analytical criterion to predict RFT's in other materials.

Revealing the Nonequilibrium Nature of a Granular Intruder: The Crucial Role of Non-Gaussian Behavior

Abstract:The characterization of the distance from equilibrium is a debated problem in particular in the treatment of experimental signals. If the signal is a 1-dimensional time-series, such a goal becomes challenging. A paradigmatic example is the angular diffusion of a rotator immersed in a vibro-fluidized granular gas. Here, we experimentally observe that the rotator's angular velocity exhibits significative differences with respect to an equilibrium process. Exploiting the presence of two relevant time-scales and non-Gaussian velocity increments, we quantify the breakdown of time-reversal asymmetry, which would vanish in the case of a 1D Gaussian process. We deduce a new model for the massive probe, with two linearly coupled variables, incorporating both Gaussian and Poissonian noise, the latter motivated by the rarefied collisions with the granular bath particles. Our model reproduces the experiment in a range of densities, from dilute to moderately dense, with a meaningful dependence of the parameters on the density. We believe the framework proposed here opens the way to a more consistent and meaningful treatment of out-of-equilibrium and dissipative systems.

Mechanistic framework for reduced-order models in soft materials: Application to three-dimensional granular intrusion

Abstract:Soft materials often display complex behaviors that transition through apparent solid- and fluid-like regimes. While a growing number of microscale simulation methods exist for these materials, reduced-order models that encapsulate the global-scale physics are often desired to predict how external bodies interact with soft media, as occurs in diverse situations from impact and penetration problems to locomotion over natural terrains. This work proposes a systematic program to develop three-dimensional reduced-order models for soft materials from a fundamental basis using continuum symmetries and rheological principles. In particular, we derive a reduced-order technique for modeling intrusion in granular media which we term three-dimensional Resistive Force Theory (3D-RFT), which is capable of accurately and quickly predicting the resistive stress distribution on arbitrary-shaped intruding bodies. Aided by a continuum description of the granular medium, a comprehensive set of spatial symmetry constraints, and a limited amount of reference data, we develop a self-consistent and accurate 3D-RFT. We verify the model capabilities in a wide range of cases and show it can be quickly recalibrated to different media and intruder surface types. The premises leading to 3D-RFT anticipate application to other soft materials with strongly hyperlocalized intrusion behavior.

Abstract:We explore the viability of modeling dynamic problems with a new formulation of an impulse‐based Level‐Set DEM (LS‐DEM). The new formulation is stable, fast, and energy conservative. However, it can be numerically stiff when the assembly has substantial mass differences between particles. We also demonstrate the feasibility of modeling deformable structures in a rigid body framework and propose several enhancements to improve the convergence of collision resolution, including a hybrid time integration scheme to separately handle at rest contacts and dynamic collisions. Finally, we extend the impulse‐based LS‐DEM to include arbitrarily shaped topographic surfaces and exploit its algorithmic advantages to demonstrate the feasibility of modeling realistic behavior of granular flows. The new formulation significantly improves the performance of dynamic simulations by allowing larger time steps, which is advantageous for observing the full development of physical phenomena such as rock avalanches, which we present as an illustrative example.

Abstract:This work summarizes a series of studies on two-dimensional granular impact, where an intruding object strikes a granular material at high speed. Many previous studies on granular impact have used a macroscopic force law, which is dominated by an inertial drag term proportional to the intruder velocity squared. The primary focus here is on the microscopic force response of the granular material, and how the grain-scale effects give rise to this inertial drag term. We show that the inertial drag arises from intermittent collisions with force-chain-like structures. We construct a simple collisional model to explain the inertial drag, as well as off-axis instability and rotations. Finally, we show how the granular response changes when the intruder speed approaches $d/t_c$, leading to a failure of the inertial drag description in this regime. Here, $d$ is the mean particle diameter and $t_c$ the characteristic momentum-transfer time between two grains.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce 1-$D$ and 2-$D$ discrete models for the dynamic granular matter formation process in the form of a system of difference equations. This approach allows us to differentiate between the influx of the rolling layer coming down from different directions to the corner points of the standing layer. Such points are difficult to adequately describe by means of pde's and their straightforward numerical approximations, typically ``ignoring'' the system's behavior on the sets of zero measure. However, these points are critical for understanding the dynamic formation process when the standing layer is created by the moving front of the rolling matter or when the latter is filling a cavity and/or stops rolling. The existence of distributed (infinite dimensional) limit solutions to our discrete models as the size of mesh tends to zero is also discussed. We illustrate our findings by numerical examples which use our model as a direct algorithm.

Abstract:<p>The interaction between fast shallow granular flow and obstacles on steep terrain is an important aspect of granular mechanics and defending against geological hazards. In this study, we used a depth-averaged model for granular flow facing obstacles on steep terrains in a bed-fitted coordinate system where the obstacle system is treated as a local bed deviation term. A second-order Riemann-free scheme is extended to compute the depth-averaged model with a wetting–drying technique, which is verified by several granular flow cases, such as aluminum bar collapse and granular flow runout on a steep slope. Numerical simulations were performed for the case of granular flow facing a (i) single hemispherical obstacle and (ii) system of three hemispherical obstacles to produce a dynamical process and deposit profile, and show good agreement with experimental results. Granular flow facing a single obstacle on a concave plane produces a detached shock wave that moves upstream and a tailing rapid transition zone that moves down, which will merge to form a new shock for deposition. Granular flows facing a three-hemisphere obstacle system produce a tailing rapid transition zone that moves downstream and a downstream wavy shock that results from the interaction of three bow shocks in front of each obstacle. The downstream wavy shock moves upstream and merges with the upstream transition zone to form a new curved shock, which later relaxes to a deposit owing to bed friction. These findings provide some supplemental understandings of flow structures of fast granular flow facing obstacles.</p>

Intruder in a two-dimensional granular system: statics and dynamics of force networks in an experimental system experiencing stick-slip dynamics

Abstract:In quasi-two-dimensional experiments with photoelastic particles confined to an annular region, an intruder constrained to move in a circular path halfway between the annular walls experiences stick-slip dynamics. We discuss the response of the granular medium to the driven intruder, focusing on the evolution of the force network during sticking periods. Because the available experimental data does not include precise information about individual contact forces, we use an approach developed in our previous work (Basak et al, J. Eng. Mechanics (2021)) based on networks constructed from measurements of the integrated strain magnitude on each particle. These networks are analyzed using topological measures based on persistence diagrams, revealing that force networks evolve smoothly but in a nontrivial manner throughout each sticking period, even though the intruder and granular particles are stationary. Characteristic features of persistence diagrams show identifiable changes as a slip is approaching, indicating the existence of slip precursors. Key features of the dynamics are similar for granular materials composed of disks or pentagons, but some details are consistently different. In particular, we find significantly larger fluctuations of the measures computed based on persistence diagrams, and therefore of the underlying networks, for systems of pentagonal particles.

Abstract:Granular impact—the dynamic intrusion of solid objects into granular media—is widespread across scientific and engineering applications including geotechnics. Existing approaches to the simulation of granular impact dynamics have relied on either a purely discrete method or a purely continuum method. Neither of these methods, however, is deemed optimal from the computational perspective. Here, we introduce a hybrid continuum–discrete approach, built on the coupled material-point and discrete-element method (MP–DEM), for simulation of granular impact dynamics with unparalleled efficiency. To accommodate highly complex solid–granular interactions, we enhance the existing MP–DEM formulation with three new ingredients: (i) a robust contact algorithm that couples the continuum and discrete parts without any interpenetration under extreme impact loads, (ii) large deformation kinematics employing multiplicative elastoplasticity, and (iii) a trans-phase constitutive relation capturing gasification of granular media. For validation, we also generate experimental data through laboratory measurement of the impact dynamics of solid spheres dropped onto dry sand. Simulation of the experiments shows that the proposed approach can well reproduce granular impact dynamics in terms of impact forces, intrusion depths, and splash patterns. Furthermore, through parameter studies on material properties, model formulations, and numerical schemes, we identify key factors for successful continuum–discrete simulation of granular impact dynamics.

Abstract:Dense driven granular materials have garnered significant interest due to their complex rheological phenomena such as dynamical heterogeneities and frequency dependence. However, the unjamming/yielding transition induced by intruder deformation, which is critical for applications in living matter interactions with sand and foundation-soil, remains poorly understood compared to boundary- or friction-driven granular systems. To address this knowledge gap, we first study the relaxation dynamics of granular medium driven by oscillatory intruder deformation, and the evidence of an abrupt unjamming/yielding transition in frequency domain is provided. The evaluation was performed by combining the bulk rheology manifested as the temporal evolution of beam deformation, dynamical and mesostructural heterogeneities. We find that the transition is characterized by the emergence of vortices, which cause shear bands accompanied by superdiffusion, transforming spatial correlations from exponential to power-law decay. This study demonstrates the potential for controlling and predicting elastic and flow properties in the intruder-deformation-driven flow and provides future theoretical or numerical modeling of active mesorheology through comparisons with complex fluids and boundary-driven scenarios.

Facilitating a 3D granular flow with an obstruction

Abstract:Ensuring a smooth rate of efflux of particles from an outlet without unpredictable clogging events is crucial in processing powders and grains. We show by experiments and simulations that an obstacle placed near the outlet can greatly suppress clog formation in a 3-dimensional granular flow; this counterintuitive phenomenon had previously been demonstrated in 2-dimensional systems. Remarkably, clog suppression is very effective even when the obstacle cross-section is comparable to that of a single grain, and is only a small fraction of the outlet area. Data from two dissimilar obstacle shapes indicate that the underlying mechanism for clog suppression is geometric: while the magnitude of the effect can be affected by dynamical factors, the optimal location of the obstacle is determined entirely by a simple geometric rule. An optimally-placed obstacle arranges for the most-probable clogging arch to be at a perilous and unstable spot, where the local flow geometry is at a point of expansion and a slight perturbation leaves the arch without downstream support. This geometric principle does not rely on previously conjectured dynamical mechanisms and admits generalization to other agent-based and particulate systems.

Abstract:We studied an active intruder traversing a two-dimensional granular medium. First, we conducted experiments to analyze the motion of the active intruder within a bed of soft particles distributed throughout a horizontal container. Our observations revealed that the intruder preferentially moved along regions characterized by higher disorder. As a consequence of its motion, and as the intruder repeatedly traversed specific regions, the structure in the vicinity of the path, but also in more distant regions, gradually became more ordered. Additionally, the motion of the intruder tended to be localized in closed paths, with this effect becoming more pronounced at higher particle concentrations. Secondly, we analyzed the behavior of the active intruder within a slightly tilted container and under vibration and shearing conditions, which served to fluidize the granular bed. Our findings indicated that the trajectory of the intruder tended to intersect regions of the granular medium with lower structural order. The overall order and fluidization degrees were found to be the primary influences on the intruder's penetration length. We used the sixth-bond-orientational order parameter to characterize the local structural aspects of the medium and the mean squared displacement to describe the dynamics of both the intruder and the medium. We conducted an experimental analysis of the ordering of the medium and motion of the intruder using network contact forces in a similar system based on soft gelatin particles. The results of this experimental analysis are consistent with the general results, showing that media with an ordered configuration exhibit more resistance than disordered media.

Abstract:We computationally determine the force on single spherical intruder particles in sheared granular flows as a function of particle size, particle density, shear rate, overburden pressure, and gravitational acceleration. The force scales similarly to, but deviates from, the buoyancy force predicted by Archimedes' principle. The deviation depends only on the intruder to bed particle size ratio, but not the density ratio or flow conditions. We propose a simple force model that successfully predicts whether intruders rise or sink, knowing only the size and density ratios, for a variety of flow configurations in physical experiments.
A predictive model for fluid-saturated, brittle granular materials during high-velocity impact events

Abstract:Granular materials -- aggregates of many discrete, disconnected solid particles -- are ubiquitous in natural and industrial settings. Predictive models for their behavior have wide ranging applications, e.g. in defense, mining, construction, pharmaceuticals, and the exploration of planetary surfaces. In many of these applications, granular materials mix and interact with liquids and gases, changing their effective behavior in non-intuitive ways. Although such materials have been studied for more than a century, a unified description of their behaviors remains elusive. In this work, we develop a model for granular materials and mixtures that is usable under particularly challenging conditions: high-velocity impact events. This model combines descriptions for the many deformation mechanisms that are activated during impact -- particle fracture and breakage; pore collapse and dilation; shock loading; and pore fluid coupling -- within a thermo-mechanical framework based on poromechanics and mixture theory. This approach allows for simultaneous modeling of the granular material and the pore fluid, and includes both their independent motions and their complex interactions. A general form of the model is presented alongside its specific application to two types of sands that have been studied in the literature. The model predictions are shown to closely match experimental observation of these materials through several GPa stresses, and simulations are shown to capture the different dynamic responses of dry and fully-saturated sand to projectile impacts at 1.3 km/s.

Abstract:Understanding the response of granular matter to intrusion of solid objects is key to modelling many aspects of behaviour of granular matter, including plastic flow. Here we report a general model for such a quasistatic process. Using a range of experiments, we first show that the relation between the penetration depth and the force resisting it, transiently nonlinear and then linear, is scalable to a universal form. We show that the gradient of the steady-state part, K ϕ , depends only on the medium's internal friction angle, ϕ, and that it is nonlinear in μ = tan ϕ, in contrast to an existing conjecture. We further show that the intrusion of any convex solid shape satisfies a modified Archimedes' law and use this to: relate the zero-depth intercept of the linear part to K ϕ and the intruder's cross-section; explain the curve's nonlinear part in terms of the stagnant zone's development.
Simple models for granular force networks

Abstract:A remarkable feature of static granular matter is the distribution of force along intricate networks. Even regular inter-particle contact networks produce wildly inhomogeneous force networks where certain “chains” of particles carry forces far larger than the mean. Although the full information of each inter-particle contact requires analysis of the stress tensor, potentially including friction and elasticity, there is a rich tradition of approximating these interactions with simple, scalar models that focus on the geometry of the system. In this paper, we briefly review past theoretical approaches to understanding the geometry of force networks. We then investigate the structure of experimentally derived granular force networks using a simple algorithm to obtain corresponding graphs. We compare our observations with the results of geometric models, including random bond percolation, which show similar spatial distributions without enforcing vector force balance. Our findings suggest that some aspects of the mean geometry of granular force networks may be captured by these simple descriptions.
Numerical simulations of granular dam break: Comparison between discrete element, Navier-Stokes, and thin-layer models

Abstract:Granular flows occur in various contexts, including laboratory experiments, industrial processes, and natural geophysical flows. To investigate their dynamics, different kinds of physically based models have been developed. These models can be characterized by the length scale at which dynamic processes are described. Discrete models use a microscopic scale to individually model each grain, Navier-Stokes models use a mesoscopic scale to consider elementary volumes of grains, and thin-layer models use a macroscopic scale to model the dynamics of elementary columns of fluids. In each case, the derivation of the associated equations is well-known. However, few studies focus on the extent to which these modeling solutions yield mutually coherent results. In this article, we compare the simulations of a granular dam break on a horizontal or inclined planes for the discrete model convex optimization contact dynamics (COCD), the Navier-Stokes model Basilisk, and the thin-layer depth-averaged model SHALTOP. We show that, although all three models allow reproducing the temporal evolution of the free surface in the horizontal case (except for SHALTOP at the initiation), the modeled flow dynamics are significantly different, and, in particular, during the stopping phase. The stresses measured at the flow's bottom, reflecting the flow dynamics, are in relatively good agreement, but significant variations are obtained with the COCD model due to complex and fast-varying granular lattices. Similar conclusions are drawn using the same rheological parameters to model a granular dam break on an inclined plane. This comparison exercise is essential for assessing the limits and uncertainties of granular flow modeling.

Abstract:Granular flows through pipes show interesting phenomena, e.g. clogging and density waves, 1/f-noise. These things are fairly good studied by computer-experiments, but there is a lack in theoretical and analytical consideration. We introduce a simple "minimal" model describing such a flow of granular particles and examine the stability of an initially homogeneous system against perturbations. In order to define the collisions between the granular particles we use two different approaches. For both, the simple and the more advanced collision definition, the model shows the qualitative same behaviour.
