Abstract:Recent literature revisits cross-country convergence patterns over the last six decades. Whilst the debate has been about unconditional or conditional convergence, we question whether convergence rates differ across countries. Using the same dataset as in the recent studies of Kremer et al. (NBER Macroecon Annu 36:337–412, 2022) and Acemoglu and Molina (NBER Macroecon Annu 36:425–442, 2022) (GDP per capita for 108 countries over 58 years, 1960–2017), we systematically search models where the degree of heterogeneity varies from the mean group, pooled mean group, fixed effects and pooled estimators of convergence. The Bayesian Information Criterion selects the heterogeneous model whether we use the U.S., a common factor or country-specific trends as the steady state. We estimate a multi-country technological catch-up statistical model using the U.S. as the technological frontier. We show empirically that a failure to allow for heterogeneous rates of convergence creates a bias in the convergence coefficient towards zero. The long-run elasticity to the U.S.—another convergence parameter of interest—associates positively (0.79) with the country's average growth. Countries that learn from the technological frontier also grow faster.

National Concentration of High-tech Products: the Second Great Divergence?

Abstract:Based on the product-country level trade data from 2004 to 2017, as well as the High-Tech Products Catalog from the US Census Bureau, this paper examines empirically the current phenomenon of "national concentration" in high-tech exports. The results show that the phenomenon of "national concentration" not only exists but also tends to be self-reinforcing. Compared with other products, the exports of high-tech products tend to be concentrated in certain countries, and this concentration trends were further strengthened after the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. The national concentration of R&D activities may be one of the important causes of the national concentration of high-tech products. This pattern remains robust when we further use the value-added export data and different definitions of high-tech products. We argue that the phenomenon of "national concentration" of high-tech exports may herald the arrival of the "Second Great Divergence" - the divergence between innovative and manufacturing activities - in the global economy.
The Evolution of U.S. Retail Concentration

Abstract:Increases in national concentration have been a salient feature of industry dynamics in the U.S. and have contributed to concerns about increasing market power. Yet, local trends may be more informative about market power, particularly in the retail sector where consumers have traditionally shopped at nearby stores. We find that local concentration has increased almost in parallel with national concentration using novel Census data on product-level revenue for all U.S. retail stores between 1992 and 2012. The increases in concentration are broad based, affecting most markets, products, and retail industries. We show that the expansion of multi-market firms into new markets explains most of the increase in national retail concentration, with consolidation via increases in local market shares increasing in importance between 1997 and 2007, and single-market firms playing a negligible role. Finally, we find that increases in local concentration can explain one-quarter to one-third of the observed rise in retail gross margins.

The Changing Shape of Spatial Income Disparities in the United States

Abstract:Spatial income disparities have increased in the US since 1980, a pattern linked to major social, economic, and political challenges. Yet, today's spatial inequality, and how it relates to the past, remains insufficiently well understood. The primary contribution of this article is to demonstrate a deep polarization in the American spatial system—yet one whose character differs from that commonly reported on in the literature. The increase in spatial inequality since 1980 is almost entirely driven by a small number of populous, economically important, and resiliently high-income superstar city-regions. But we also show that the rest of the system exhibits a long-run pattern of income convergence over the study period. A secondary contribution is historical: today's superstars have sat durably atop the urban hierarchy since at least 1940. Third, we describe six distinctive pathways of development that regions follow between 1940 and 2019, with certain locations catching up, falling behind, and surging ahead. We explore the role played by initial endowments in driving locations down these pathways, finding population, education, industrial structure, and immigrant attraction to be key distinguishing features. These insights are enabled by a fourth contribution: methodologically, we use group-based trajectory modeling—an approach new to the field that integrates top-down and bottom-up views of the evolving national spatial system. We conclude by exploring implications for the mid-twenty-first century.

Visualizing Convergence Dynamics across Regions and States: h-Convergence

Abstract:Researchers interested in studying whether convergence dynamics are in place among regions within the same country have adopted both statistical tools and empirical frameworks developed when studying convergence across different economies. We show that this approach is risky, because when an analysis is conducted at the regional level, the absolute and club convergence processes are more likely to co-exist than in the case of world economies. We propose an empirical approach where the two hypotheses are not taken as competing. Our procedure uncovers periods of convergence and periods of divergence for the three samples we studied: Italy observed at both the regional and provincial levels; EU regions; and world economies. We find a process of absolute convergence for Italian regions from 1951 to 1999, and that their convergence process ends in 1971 after a period which we define as clustering convergence. We also find a process of convergence across European regions from 1977 to 1993; that ends in 1985 in favor of a process of clustering and divergence. Finally, our procedure uncovers a process of absolute convergence from 1964 to 1975 and divergence from 1975 to 1999 in the case of world economies.

Abstract:In the context of the studies of income and wealth distribution, this paper explores evidence to what extent recent monetary policy had distribution effects. This research utilizes the Federal Reserve Board's Survey of Consumer Finances to identify at least two sub populations and follow their dynamics as monetary policy moved from conventional interest rate setting to unconventional Quantitative Easting policy. This is achieved through use of Weighted Expectation Maximization Cluster Modeling, and the Malhalanobis Distance between cluster means. This approach is used to study volatility and bifurcation in distributions of capital gains and incomes to U.S. households through the Financial Crisis and Sars-CoV-2 pandemic.

Convergence in House Price Cycles across the US: Recent Developments and the Impact of Covid

Abstract:The co-movement of house prices across different regional markets has important implications for portfolio management, the conduct of monetary policy and labor mobility. Previous research examining several decades of co-movement has found price cohesion between US regions rising steadily from the mid-1990s or mid-2000s. Using a more recent data set, and applying more recently developed filters than previous studies employed, we find instead that by one filter cyclical co-movement has dropped since the early 1980s, and although it has fluctuated has displayed no sustained upward trend since. A second filter leads to a measure showing that co-movement did drop in the mid-1980s, and recovered in the mid-1990s. However, this recovery has not been steady, and has been marked by a number of declines in cohesion. Indeed, both filters show a drop in cohesion over the covid quarters and an increase in the variation between regions regarding how closely housing markets co-move. This was due to more extreme dispersion in house price movements across regions compared with what had prevailed in previous years. We note that the Pacific region, which had the fastest-growing prices in the US since the 1970s, grew the least of any market after the first year of the pandemic, while lower-cost regions experienced more rapid price increases during this period. These results are consistent with studies which have found covid led to a "flattening" of the gradient between neighborhoods with high and low-cost housing. We find some evidence that regions with a higher percentage of their workforces working-from-home experienced lower house price growth relative to other regions post-pandemic.

Abstract:Macroeconomic theories of growth and wealth distribution have an outsized influence on national and international social and economic policies. Yet, due to a relative lack of reliable, system wide data, many such theories remain, at best, unvalidated and, at worst, misleading. In this paper, we introduce a novel economic observatory and framework enabling high resolution comparisons and assessments of the distributional impact of economic development through the remote sensing of planet Earth’s surface. Striking visual and empirical validation is observed for a broad, global macroeconomic σ-convergence in the period immediately following the end of the Cold War. What is more, we observe strong empirical evidence that the mechanisms driving σ-convergence failed immediately after the financial crisis and the start of the Great Recession. Nevertheless, analysis of both cross-country and cross-state samples indicates that, globally, disproportionately high growth levels and excessively high decay levels have become rarer over time. We also see that urban areas, especially concentrated within short distances of major capital cities were more likely than rural or suburban areas to see relatively high growth in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Observed changes in growth polarity can be attributed plausibly to post-crisis government intervention and subsidy policies introduced around the world. Overall, the data and techniques we present here make economic evidence for the rise of China, the decline of US manufacturing, the euro crisis, the Arab Spring, and various, recent, Middle East conflicts visually evident for the first time.

Stock Market Downturn and Stock Market Concentration

Abstract:As an important component of corporate inequality, stock market concentration has become a focus of attention in academia in recent years. However, existing literature focuses on its negative consequences, and research on the determinants of stock market concentration is scarce. This paper investigates for the first time how stock market downturns affect stock market concentration. Using data on stock markets in both the United States and China, we find a negative correlation between market-wide returns and stock market concentration. To address endogeneity and establish causal inference, we exploit two natural experiments: the COVID-19 pandemic and the subprime crisis. We find that stock market concentration increases during these crises, and we also find some heterogeneity between the United States and China. Our findings have important policy implications regarding inequality during market downturns.

Abstract:A spatial dynamic panel data approach is adopted to study regional growth convergence in the US economy. In the neoclassical growth model, regions and countries are assumed to be independent from each other, which may not be valid in the real world. We introduce technological spillovers into the neoclassical framework, showing that the convergence rate is higher and there is spatial interaction. By examing annual data on personal state income spanning the period of 1930–2006 for the 48 contiguous states, we obtain empirical results that are consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:Can we associate globalization with converging productivity levels of different countries? Are developing countries catching up? This paper provides answers to these questions by studying the convergence of labor productivity with the Penn World Table 10.0. I utilize standard - and -tests and the new -test Kong et al. (J Econom 209(2):185–207, 2019) propose. Furthermore, I propose using a time-series trend test to further study the underlying process of -convergence. The tests support convergence in the country groups of OECD, EU, APEC, Europe, and Asia. Contrary to the current belief that the income gap between rich and poor countries is not closing, I find -convergence in a group that excludes only African countries. More so, even the group of all countries seems to converge from the year 2000.

Disentangling collective trends from local dynamics

Abstract:A single social phenomenon (such as crime, unemployment or birth rate) can be observed through temporal series corresponding to units at different levels (cities, regions, countries...). Units at a given local level may follow a collective trend imposed by external conditions, but also may display fluctuations of purely local origin. The local behavior is usually computed as the difference between the local data and a global average (e.g. a national average), a view point which can be very misleading. We propose here a method for separating the local dynamics from the global trend in a collection of correlated time series. We take an independent component analysis approach in which we do not assume a small unbiased local contribution in contrast with previously proposed methods. We first test our method on synthetic series generated by correlated random walkers. We then consider crime rate series (in the US and France) and the evolution of obesity rate in the US, which are two important examples of societal measures. For crime rates, the separation between global and local policies is a major subject of debate. For the US, we observe large fluctuations in the transition period of mid-70's during which crime rates increased significantly, whereas since the 80's, the state crime rates are governed by external factors and the importance of local specificities being decreasing. In the case of obesity, our method shows that external factors dominate the evolution of obesity since 2000, and that different states can have different dynamical behavior even if their obesity prevalence is similar.

Getting Closer or Falling Apart? Euro Countries After the Euro Crisis

Abstract:We study convergence and divergence dynamics in a sample of EMU countries by assembling an extensive dataset that contains information on public spending and policy outcomes in a variety of areas of government intervention including education, health, and civil justice from the early 1990s. We also focus on other important determinants of a country’s economic performance such as the level of regulation of product and labor markets, as well as the trust in political institutions, quality of governance and inequality. Results show that despite divergent economic growth in the Euro periphery countries after the 2011-13 Euro crisis, the quality of services and level of regulation did not deteriorate or indeed improved, increasing convergence with the core Euro countries. However, the debt crisis dramatically worsened citizens’ perceptions of quality of governance as well as the level of social trust. The very different approach followed with the COVID crisis might have mitigated the problem, but the Euro project has still shaky foundations. This calls in question its future political viability and asks for reform.

Abstract:This study examines the immigrant-native wage gap in the United States using 2019 Annual Social and Economic Supplement data from the Current Population Survey. Ordinary least squares regression analyses were used to estimate the wages of immigrants while controlling for human capital characteristics, sociodemographic factors, and time since arrival in the United States. The results demonstrate that the wage gap converges with more time spent in the United States, likely due to increased work experience and language proficiency, but does not completely diminish. Separate regressions are conducted for different occupational groups. Occupations are shown to be a large contributor to the differential, as wages differ significantly more in unskilled occupations such as manual labor or transportation. The possibility of labor market discrimination is explored as a reason for the wage gap, with the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition showing that only 68% of the wage gap can be explained by the included explanatory variables.

Abstract:Someone who lives in an economically depressed place was probably born there. And having workers with local ties who prefer to live in their birthplaces leads to smaller migration responses in depressed places. Smaller migration responses lead to lower real incomes and make incomes more volatile, a form of hysteresis. Local ties can also persist for generations. Subsidies to economically depressed places cause smaller distortions, because few people want to move to depressed places. Finally, subsidies to productive places increase aggregate productivity, as they induce more migration. (JEL J22, J23, J31, J61, R23, Z13)

Analyzing Economic Convergence Across the Americas: A Survival Analysis Approach to GDP per Capita Trajectories

Abstract:By integrating survival analysis, machine learning algorithms, and economic interpretation, this research examines the temporal dynamics associated with attaining a 5 percent rise in purchasing power parity-adjusted GDP per capita over a period of 120 months (2013-2022). A comparative investigation reveals that DeepSurv is proficient at capturing non-linear interactions, although standard models exhibit comparable performance under certain circumstances. The weight matrix evaluates the economic ramifications of vulnerabilities, risks, and capacities. In order to meet the GDPpc objective, the findings emphasize the need of a balanced approach to risk-taking, strategic vulnerability reduction, and investment in governmental capacities and social cohesiveness. Policy guidelines promote individualized approaches that take into account the complex dynamics at play while making decisions.

Prices and Concentration: A U-shape? Theory and Evidence from Renewables

Abstract:We study firms' strategic interactions when each firm may own multiple production technologies, each with its own marginal cost and capacity. Increasing industry concentration by reallocating non-efficient capacity to the largest and most efficient firm can decrease market prices as it incentivizes the firm to outcompete its rivals. However, with large reallocations, the standard monotonic relationship between concentration and prices re-emerges as competition weakens due to the rival's lower capacity. Thus, we demonstrate a U-shaped relationship between market prices and industry concentration when firms are diversified. This result does not rely on economies of scale or scope. We find consistent evidence from the Colombian wholesale energy market, where strategic firms are diversified with fossil-fuel and renewable technologies, exploiting exogenous variation in renewable capacities. Our findings not only apply to the green transition but also to other industries and suggest new insights for antitrust policies.

Abstract:The two most striking historical features of aggregate output are its sustained long run growth and its recurrent fluctuations around this growth path. Over horizons of a few years, these shorter cyclical swings can be pronounced; for example, the 1953, 1957, and 1974 recessions are evident as substantial temporary declines in aggregate activity. These cyclical fluctuations are, however, dwarfed in magnitude by the secular expansion of output. But just as there are cyclical swings in output, so too are there variations in the growth trend: growth in GNP in the 1960s was much stronger than it was in the 1950s. Thus, changes in long-run patterns of growth are an important feature of postwar aggregate economic activity. In this article, we discuss the implications of changing trends in macroeconomic data from two perspectives. The first perspective is that of a macroeconomist reassessing the conventional dichotomy between growth and stabilization policies. As an empirical matter, does this dichotomy make sense for the postwar United States? What is the relative “importance” of changes in the trend and cyclical swings in explaining the quarterly movements in economic aggregates? We next adopt the perspective of an econometrician interpreting empirical evidence based on data that contain variable trends. The presence of variable trends in time series data can lead one to draw mistaken inferences using conventional econometric techniques. How can these techniques -- or our interpretation of them -- be modified to avoid these mistakes?

Abstract:Situations often arise in which we are interested in measuring divergence between distributions over time or across regions. This paper proposes an entropy measure of divergence and derives analytical expressions for several parametric distributions widely used in modelling income distributions. An empirical application using income distribution data for the US from 1970 to 2019 shows a significant divergence or shift during the 1980-2000 period but relative stability on either side of this period.
