Abstract:Hydrogen energy is converted to electricity through fuel cells, aided by nanostructured materials. Fuel cell technology is a promising method for utilizing energy sources, ensuring sustainability, and protecting the environment. However, it still faces drawbacks such as high cost, operability, and durability issues. Nanomaterials can address these drawbacks by enhancing catalysts, electrodes, and fuel cell membranes, which play a crucial role in separating hydrogen into protons and electrons. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have gained significant attention in scientific research. The primary objectives are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the automotive industry, and develop cost-effective methods and materials to enhance PEMFC efficiency. We provide a typical yet inclusive review of various types of proton-conducting membranes. In this review article, special focus is given to the distinctive nature of nanomaterial-filled proton-conducting membranes and their essential characteristics, including their structural, dielectric, proton transport, and thermal properties. We provide an overview of the various reported nanomaterials, such as metal oxide, carbon, and polymeric nanomaterials. Additionally, the synthesis methods in situ polymerization, solution casting, electrospinning, and layer-by-layer assembly for proton-conducting membrane preparation were analyzed. In conclusion, the way to implement the desired energy conversion application, such as a fuel cell, using a nanostructured proton-conducting membrane has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Additives such as fillers, cross‐linkers, and plasticizers have become increasingly important in the polymer nanocomposite production field, especially for enhancing the structural morphology, functional behavior, and final performance of nanocomposites in broad applications. The current work is an overview of the effects of additive substances such as fillers, cross‐linkers, and plasticizers in the polymer electrolyte membrane composites applied to fuel cells. A comparative review is conducted by categorizing fillers into several types, and the most popular cross‐linkers and plasticizers used in fuel cell membranes are included in this review. The highlighted properties include the proton conductivity, permeability, mechanical properties, thermal properties, crystallinity, and structure of additive‐modified nanocomposites. Furthermore, the challenges and future prospects in the additive field are discussed in Section 5.0. This review can provide a reference for researchers seeking specific substances that can be used to enhance nanocomposite properties, especially in membrane fuel cell applications. Abstract:Carbon-based nanocomposites have developed as the most promising and emerging materials in nanoscience and technology during the last several years. They are microscopic materials that range in size from 1 to 100 nanometers. They may be distinguished from bulk materials by their size, shape, increased surface-to-volume ratio, and unique physical and chemical characteristics. Carbon nanocomposite matrixes are often created by combining more than two distinct solid phase types. The nanocomposites that were constructed exhibit unique properties, such as significantly enhanced toughness, mechanical strength, and thermal/electrochemical conductivity. As a result of these advantages, nanocomposites have been used in a variety of applications, including catalysts, electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and energy storage devices, among others. This study focuses on the usage of several forms of carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon aerogels, carbon nanofibers, graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes, in the development of hydrogen fuel cells. These fuel cells have been successfully employed in numerous commercial sectors in recent years, notably in the car industry, due to their cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and long-cyclic durability. Further; we discuss the principles, reaction mechanisms, and cyclic stability of the fuel cells and also new strategies and future challenges related to the development of viable fuel cells.

A review of advancements in commercial and non-commercial Nafion-based proton exchange membranes for direct methanol fuel cells

Abstract:Nafion membranes are commercially available for the application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) due to their unique nano-porous structure, high wettability, high ion exchange capacity due to sulfonic groups and high mechanical strength. However, its high cost and high swelling in water result in high methanol crossover, low chemical stability and low ion conductivity at elevated temperatures that limit its usage. Moreover, in commercial membranes when the thickness increases, the ion conductivity compromises and when the thickness decreases, the fuel crossover increases which disrupts the performance of the fuel cell. The modification of pre-existing Nafion membrane such as Nafion 115, Nafion 117, Nafion 212, Nafion 112 and laboratory recasted Nafion membrane is a promising requirement for their future applications. Additives such as organic, inorganic nanoparticles and polymers apply to the Nafion membrane that not only tune the physical aspects of the membrane but also improve the electrochemical properties of the membrane. This review article focuses on advances in different Nafion commercial membranes and laboratory recasted non-commercial Nafion membrane that make under special conditions after modifications. This paper provides challenges, advantages, and disadvantages, as well as future advances in the application of composite membranes in direct methanol fuel cells.

Abstract:Nafion chains have been reacted onto graphene oxide (GO) through atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction between the C–F groups of Nafion and the C=C groups of GO. The obtained nanohybrids of GO and Nafion (GO-Nafion) are characterized with Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to support the performance of the ATRA reaction between GO and Nafion and the chemical structure of GO-Nafion. Morphological observation on GO-Nafion with transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy further demonstrates the organic-inorganic hybrid nanosheet structure of GO-Nafion. GO-Nafion has been used as a nanoadditive for fabrication of Nafion-based nanocomposite proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. Compared to the neat recast Nafion membrane, addition of GO-Nafion results in a 1.6-folds of proton conductivity to the corresponding nanocomposite PEM. The single cell tests on the nanocomposite PEM also exhibit an about 35–40% increase in the fuel cell performance.

Abstract:As a promising alternative to petroleum fossil energy, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell has drawn considerable attention due to its low pollution emission, high energy density, portability, and long operation times. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) like Nafion plays an essential role as the core of fuel cell. A good PEM must have satisfactory performance such as high proton conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, electrochemical stability, and suitable for making membrane electrode assemblies (MEA). However, performance degradation and high permeability remain the main shortcomings of Nafion. Therefore, the development of a new PEM with better performance in some special conditions is greatly desired. In this review, we aim to summarize the latest achievements in improving the Nafion performance that works well under elevated temperature or methanol-fueled systems. The methods described in this article can be divided into some categories, utilizing hydrophilic inorganic material, metal-organic frameworks, nanocomposites, and ionic liquids. In addition, the mechanism of proton conduction in Nafion membranes is discussed. These composite membranes exhibit some desirable characteristics, but the development is still at an early stage. In the future, revolutionary approaches are needed to accelerate the application of fuel cells and promote the renewal of energy structure.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a fast growing next-generation energy conversion technology, which hold promising interest for transportation and other applications. Nevertheless, successful commercialization of PEMFCs has been significantly retarded principally due to the high cost and poor durability of Pt/C catalysts used for anodic and cathodic reactions. Under typical fuel cell operating conditions, a traditional Pt/C catalyst is prone to degrade by various mechanisms, such as electrochemical carbon corrosion, which results in detrimental effects on the long-term performance. There have been tremendous efforts undertaken to develop durable carbon supports by introducing graphitic carbon components. In this context, carbon nanofiber supported catalysts have been investigated as highly durable supports for Pt and non-Pt nanoparticles in recent years. We anticipate it is timely to review the developments in this topic. This Review highlights the current progress on the graphitic nanofibers as a catalyst support in terms of morphology, electrocatalytic activity, various functionalization strategies, and so on, specifically focusing on the effect of nanofiber edge carbons and the advantages of surface reconstruction of nanofiber edge carbon into loops with regard to the stability of carbon support and fuel cell performance. We believe this Review stands as a guide for future researchers to figure out a rational design of oxygen reduction reaction catalysts, especially dealing with highly graphitized carbons.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:This article reviews recent studies on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as fillers in enhancing the electrical conductivity of composite bipolar plates (BPPs) used for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Findings revealed that CNTs possess high-aspect ratios, which facilitate effective electron transport and promote charge-carrier mobility within the composite, thereby enhancing conductivity. In addition, strategies addressing the challenges of achieving high conductivity by optimizing filler dispersion, resin viscosity, and fiber alignment were explored.

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG) membranes made by dealloying consist of a bicontinuous network of Au ligaments and open pore channels, which have gained considerable attention as a platform for the design of carbon-free electrodes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Benefiting from a unique combination of high electronic conductivity, high surface area, and modifiable surface chemistry, these self-supporting membrane type electrodes allow integration of various structural functions required for specific electrode reactions and simultaneously facilitate the entire fuel cell kinetic process. In this review, we summarize the major research progresses in this area, with an emphasis on how to customize the surface structures of these three-dimensional electrocatalysts for desired fuel molecule oxidation and oxidant reduction. We will also discuss these designed structural characteristics that can be readily accommodated in membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), thus effectively bridging the technological gap between electrocatalysts’ intrinsic activities and their actual performances in fuel cells.
Preparation and Applications of Nafion-functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:Nafion-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-Nafion) are prepared through an ozone-mediated process. The chemical structure of MWCNT-Nafion is characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Nafion chains covering on the outer surfaces of MWCNTs in MWCNT-Nafion is observed in high-resolution transmission electron micrographs. The Nafion fraction of MWCNT-Nafion is about 12 wt%. MWCNT-Nafion is effective to prepare Nafion/MWCNT-Nafion composite membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Compared to the pristine Nafion membrane, the composite membrane with a MWCNT-Nafion loading of 0.05 wt% (N/MN-0.05) exhibits an 1.5-fold increase of mechanical strength and a five-fold increase of proton conductivity. In single cell tests, the current density at 0.6 V and the maximum power density measured with the N/MN-0.05 composite membrane are 1556 mA cm−2 and 650 mW cm−2, respectively. Both of the values are 1.5-times the values measured with a pristine Nafion membrane.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) represent a promising means for the generation of power in the 21st century because of their high efficiency compared to the coal combustion engine and eco-environment. Among various components found in the fuel cell systems, proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are pivotal. Currently, the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are based on perfluoro sulfonic acid membranes such as Nafion, and Flemion, which have certain drawbacks such as high fuel crossover and cost. Consequently, researchers have focused on making PEMs with high proton conductivity, durability, thermal stability, maximum power density and low fuel crossover, and low cost. In the recent years, the hybrid organic–inorganic composite membrane has emerged as an interesting alternative. It provides a unique combination of organic and inorganic properties, and overcomes the limitations of the pure polymeric membranes. In this paper, we have reviewed several alternatives for the fabrication and evaluation of polymer electrolyte and composite membranes for fuel cell applications.

Supramolecular Modifying Nafion with Fluoroalkyl‐Functionalized Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters for High‐Selective Proton Conduction

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes with high selectivity are urgently required in energy and electronic technologies. Nafion, a state-of-the-art commercial proton exchange membrane material, faces significant challenges. It suffers from the permeation of undesirable substances, like hydrogen in fuel cells and vanadium ions in redox flow batteries, due to the unmatched sizes between its ionic domains (3~5 nm) and these substances. In this work, we present a supramolecular modification strategy that simultaneously enhances the proton conductivity and selectivity of Nafion. We employ fluoroalkyl-grafted polyoxometalate (POMs) nanoclusters as supramolecular additives to modify Nafion via co-assembly. These POMs can precisely and robustly decorate at Nafion ionic domains, with their fluoroalkyl chains anchoring into the perfluorinated matrix while their inorganic clusters stay in the ionic regions. The hybrid membranes, with continuous proton hopping sites and nanoscale steric hindrance offered by POMs, exhibit a 56% increase in proton conductivity and a 100% improvement in proton/vanadium selectivity. This leads to significantly enhanced power density and energy efficiency in fuel cells and vanadium flow batteries, respectively. These results underscore the intriguing potential of molecular cluster additives in improving the functions of ion-conducting membranes.

Abstract:Abstract Proton exchange membrane fuel cells have been recently developed at an increasing pace as clean energy conversion devices for stationary and transport sector applications. High platinum cathode loadings contribute significantly to costs. This is why improved catalyst and support materials as well as catalyst layer design are critically needed. Recent advances in nanotechnologies and material sciences have led to the discoveries of several highly promising families of materials. These include platinum-based alloys with shape-selected nanostructures, platinum-group-metal-free catalysts such as metal-nitrogen-doped carbon materials and modification of the carbon support to control surface properties and ionomer/catalyst interactions. Furthermore, the development of advanced characterization techniques allows a deeper understanding of the catalyst evolution under different conditions. This review focuses on all these recent developments and it closes with a discussion of future research directions in the field.

Abstract:Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle-anchored and Nafion-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-MNP-Nafion) have been prepared and used as a nano-additive for Nafion. The addition of 0.1 wt% of MWCNT-MNP-Nafion to Nafion results in the membranes showing a reduction of methanol permeability from 30.1 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1) to 6.8 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1) and an increase of proton conductivity from 31 mS cm(-1) to 78 mS cm(-1). The presence of MWCNT-MNP-Nafion reduces the ionic cluster sizes and decreases the free volume element concentration of the modified Nafion membrane. Both have been verified with small angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and contribute to the reduction of the methanol permeability of the membrane. The increase in the proton conductivity originates from the formation of proton-conducting pathways on the MWCNT bundles. For the membrane fabricated under a magnetic field, its proton conductivity further increases to 85 mS cm(-1) due to the magnetically-driven alignment of MWCNT-MNP-Nafion in the Nafion matrix (A-Nafion-NM-0.1). Compared to the plain recast Nafion membrane, the A-Nafion-NM-0.1 membrane has a 15-fold membrane selectivity, an 8.7-fold maximum power density, and a 6.6-fold current density at an operating voltage of 0.4 V in the tests for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). The high performance of the membrane in the DMFC tests demonstrates that the MWCNT-MNP-Nafion is a highly efficient additive for the preparation of Nafion-based membranes for DMFCs.
Nafion-carbon nanocomposite membranes prepared using hydrothermal carbonization for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells

Abstract:Nafion-carbon (NC) composite membranes were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of Nafion membrane impregnated with glucose solution. The carbon loading of the NC membrane was tuned by controlling the hydrothermal carbonization time. X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy were used to characterize plain Nafion and NC composite membranes. Nafion-carbon composite membranes exhibited better proton conductivity and reduced methanol permeability than those of the plain Nafion membrane. A single cell prepared with the NC composite membrane with a carbon loading of 3.6 wt% exhibited the highest cell performance. Compared with the cell performance of plain Nafion membrane, the maximum power density of the new cell improved by 31.7% for an H(2)/O(2) fuel cell at room temperature, and by 44.0% for a direct methanol fuel cell at 60 degrees C.
Property Enhancement Effects of Side-Chain-Type Naphthalene-Based Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether ketone) on Nafion Composite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes were prepared by blending raw Nafion and synthesized side-chain-type naphthalene-based sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) with a sulfonation degree of 1.35 (SNPAEK-1.35). The incorporation of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer with ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.01 mequiv·g-1 into a Nafion matrix has the property enhancement effects, such as increasing IECs, improving proton conductivity, enhancing mechanical properties, reducing methanol crossover, and improving single cell performance of Nafion. Morphology studies show that Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes exhibit a well-defined microphase separation structure depending on the contents of SNPAEK-1.35 polymer. Among them, Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% with a bicontinuous morphology exhibits the best comprehensive properties. For example, it shows the highest proton conductivities of 0.092 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.163 S cm-1 at 80 °C, which are higher than those of recast Nafion with 0.073 S cm-1 at 25 °C and 0.133 S cm-1 at 80 °C, respectively. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% and Nafion/SNPAEK-7.5% membranes display an open circuit voltage of 0.77 V and a maximum power density of 47 mW cm-2 at 80 °C, which are much higher than those of recast Nafion of 0.63 V and 24 mW cm-2 under the same conditions. Nafion/SNPAEK-5.0% membrane also has comparable tensile strength (12.7 MPa) to recast Nafion (13.7 MPa), and higher Young's modulus (330 MPa) than that of recast Nafion (240 MPa). By combining their high proton conductivities, comparable mechanical properties, and good single cell performance, Nafion/SNPAEK-x composite membranes have the potential to be polymer electrolyte materials for direct methanol fuel cell applications.

Abstract:As the critical component of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), proton exchange membrane (PEM) determine its overall performance. Current PEMs hardly meet the operating requirements of fuel cells, limiting their commercial applications. With the development of nanocomposite technology, nanofibers introduced into PEMs to prepare nanofiber composite proton exchange membranes (NCPEMs) have been widely studied. In an NCPEM, nanofibers can form long-range channels for proton transport, and reinforced skeleton to reach the target performance of PEMFCs. Focusing on NCPEM, this paper reviews on recent progresses in nanofiber preparation and NCPEM preparation techniques. Furthermore, different types of nanofibers incorporated into NCPEMs are reviewed in terms of fiber composition. The challenges and future perspectives regarding NCPEMs are also discussed.

Abstract:Recent progress on branched polymer membranes as electrolyte materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications has attracted interest due to the limitations of commercially available Nafion® membranes. Branched polymer membranes have shown improved chemical stability, proton conductivity, and good solubility. The branching degree and the structure of the branching agent have an essential correlation with the characteristics of the polymer membranes. This review presents the most recent and promising design strategies and characteristics of branched polymers as proton exchange membranes for both low- and high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Recent advances in branched polymers are summarized, including branched sulfonated poly(aryl ether)s, branched sulfonated polyimides, branched polybenzimidazoles, etc. The remaining challenges and prospects in proton exchange membranes are also discussed.

Abstract:Nafion-based composite membranes were prepared by introducing ammoniated polymer with norbornene (APNB) into Nafion membrane (Nafion/APNB membrane). Of the prepared membranes, the Nafion/APNB-2.5% membrane possesses good dimensional stability with a maximum swelling ratio (Sr) of 8.2%. The hydrophobic domains become more and more with increasing the APNB architecture, which in turn causes the phenomenon that Nafion/APNB-10% membrane possesses the highest ion conductivity (σ, 82.4 mS cm−1) (Nafion/APNB-2.5% of 73.8 mS cm−1, Nafion/APNB-5% of 76.4 mS cm−1). This phenomenon is due to the fact that ion clusters are aggregated and thus form highly ordered water channels, so that the protons can be efficiently transported along the center of channels and possess excellent σ. The fuel cells with the Nafion/APNB-5% membrane possess the highest power density (1106.9 mW cm−2), which indicates that the Nafion/APNB membranes have good performances for fuel cells.
