Abstract:This work presents simulations of the Electrofluid Dynamic energy conversion process in slender channel devices having very small particles (in both micro and nano scales) as charge carriers. Solutions are discussed for a system composed by coupled differential equations, which includes the equation for the total current along the channel, the equations for total energy and momentum of the mixture (gas and solid particles), the continuity equation and the equations for energy and momentum of a single particle. Results for suspended particles of higher diameters have been previously published in the Literature, but the simulations here presented exhibit an appreciable increase in the values for output currents.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flow is the transport method of choice in microfluidic devices over traditional pressure‐driven flow. To date, however, studies on electroosmotic flow have been almost entirely limited to inside microchannels. This work presents the first experimental study of Joule heating effects on electroosmotic fluid entry from the inlet reservoir (i.e., the well that supplies fluids and samples) to the microchannel in a polymer‐based microfluidic chip. Electrothermal fluid circulations are observed at the reservoir‐microchannel junction, which grow in size and strength with the increasing alternating current to direct current voltage ratio. Moreover, a 2D depth‐averaged numerical model is developed to understand the effects of Joule heating on fluid temperature and flow fields in electrokinetic microfluidic chips. This model overcomes the problems encountered in previous unrealistic 2D and costly 3D models, and is able to predict the observed electroosmotic entry flow patterns with a good agreement.

Abstract:Abstract Many complex fluids such as emulsions, suspensions, biofluids, etc., are routinely encountered in many micro and nanoscale systems. These fluids exhibit non-Newtonian viscoelastic behaviour instead of showing simple Newtonian one. It is often needed to mix such viscoelastic fluids in small-scale micro-systems for further processing and analysis which is often achieved by the application of an external electric field and/or using the electroosmotic flow phenomena. This study proposes a very simple yet efficient strategy to mix such viscoelastic fluids based on extensive numerical simulations. Our proposed setup consists of a straight microchannel with small patches of constant wall zeta potential, which are present on both the top and bottom walls of the microchannel. This heterogeneous zeta potential on the microchannel wall generates local electro-elastic instability and electro-elastic turbulence once the Weissenberg number exceeds a critical value. These instabilities and turbulence, driven by the interaction between the elastic stresses and the streamline curvature present in the system, ultimately lead to a chaotic and unstable flow field, thereby facilitating the mixing of such viscoelastic fluids. In particular, based on our proposed approach, we show how one can use the rheological properties of fluids and associated fluid-mechanical phenomena for their efficient mixing even in a straight microchannel.

Abstract:Abstract Investigating the flow behavior in microfluidic systems has become of interest due to the need for precise control of the mass and momentum transport in microfluidic devices. In multilayered-flows, precise control of the flow behavior requires a more thorough understanding as it depends on multiple parameters. The following paper proposes a microfluidic system consisting of an aqueous solution between a moving plate and a stationary wall, where the moving plate mimics a charged oil–water interface. Analytical expressions are derived by solving the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation along with the simplified Navier–Stokes equation to describe the electrokinetic effects on the shear-driven flow of the aqueous electrolyte solution. The Debye–Huckel approximation is not employed in the derivation extending its compatibility to high interfacial zeta potential. Additionally, a numerical model is developed to predict the streaming potential flow created due to the shear-driven motion of the charged upper wall along with its associated electric double layer effect. The model utilizes the extended Nernst–Planck equations instead of the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation to accurately predict the axial variation in ion concentration along the microchannel. Results show that the interfacial zeta potential of the moving interface greatly impacts the velocity profile of the flow and can reverse its overall direction. The numerical results are validated by the analytical expressions, where both models predicted that flow could reverse its overall direction when the interfacial zeta potential of the oil–water is above a certain threshold value. Finally, this paper describes the electroviscous effect as well as the transient development of electrokinetic effects within the microchannel.

Abstract:The present study delves into the flow characteristics of a couple stress fluid under the influence of electromagnetic fields in a micro-circular-tube with a slippery inner surface. This investigation considers the flow to be actuated by pressure gradient, electromagnetic force, and induced streaming potential field with slip boundary condition. Mathematical model is developed to determine the solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (incorporating the Debye-Hückel approximation) for the electric potential within the electric double layer and the momentum equation for fluid flow under employing physically relevant boundary conditions. The analytical expressions for velocity, streaming potential, electroviscous effect, and efficiency of electrokinetic energy conversion are scrutinized. Further, the numerical solution is computed for the energy equation by employing finite difference method. The key findings of present investigation reveal that a higher non-Newtonian parameter leads to an enhancement in the velocity distribution, streaming potential field, and efficiency of electrokinetic energy conversion. In contrast, the electroviscous effect shows a contrasting behavior. Also, an electric field makes the temperature go up as the Hartmann number increases. But when there's no electric field, the temperature goes down. The discovery has wide-ranging implications for chemical processing and mixing, biochip construction for drug delivery, and biomedical engineering innovations.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of the different time-periodic electrically driven nanofluid flows through parallel plate microchannels under the combined influences of externally applied axial pressure gradient and transverse magnetic field. The analytical solutions for electro-magneto-hydro-dynamic (EMHD) flow in microchannels are obtained under the Debye–Hückel linearization. It's worth mentioning that the analytical solution of the velocity field under the unsteady state conditions is obtained by the Green's function method. In addition, we also compare the streaming potential and electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency under different time-periodic with related experimental data and theoretical research and conclude that the square waveform can effectively improve the streaming potential and electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency. The influences of several dimensionless parameters on velocity field, streaming potential and electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency are discussed in briefly and presented graphically.

Abstract:In order to conduct extensive investigation of electrokinetic energy conversion in nanofluidic devices, the analysis of streaming potential of pressure driven flow in the two-layer fluidic system through a nanochannel is investigated theoretically. Under the influences of the interfacial electric potential difference and the interface charge density jump, we first obtain the analytical electric potential distribution in the present two-layer fluidic system with consideration of Debye-Huckel linearization assumption. Then the analytical expressions of streaming potential field and flow velocity are derived. Based on the obtained the streaming potential, we finally give the analytical electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency in two-layer fluidic system and discuss the influences of related physical parameters on it. The theoretical result shows that the streaming potential can be viewed as a criterion to estimate the electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency. The electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency can be enhanced by the viscosity ratio and the interfacial slip length, but be restrained by the permittivity ratio and ion friction coefficient. Comparing to the single-layer fluidic system, the electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency can be augmented obviously in the two-layer fluidic system by selecting optimized flow parameters.

Abstract:Both the theoretical and experimental analyses on several typical micro channels of the micro fluidic systems are presented. The flow patterns of the rigging angle bend channel, the sudden expansive channel and the elbow channel on the pressure driven mode are numerically analyzed by using CFD simulation technology. The simulation method for the electro-osmosis is described and the electroosmosis flow inside the cross channel is simulated. Four kinds of micro channel models are micromachined with glass material and experimentally detected by using Micro-PIV technology. A good agreement is obtained by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. From the results, The Micro-PIV technology is indicated to be the most efficient experimental method for micro flow detection. Furthermore, N-S equation is experimentally proved to be correct in the micron flow numerical simulation.

Emerging systems in microfluidics are embracing bio-inspired designs in which boundaries are flexible and mimic peristaltic propulsion mechanisms encountered in nature. These devices utilize electro-kinetic body forces to manipulate very precisely ionic biofluids for a range of medical applications including. Motivated by exploring in more detail electro-hemorheological micro-pumping, in the current article, a mathematical model is developed for peristalsis propulsion of a viscoelastic biofluid in a curved microchannel with electro-osmotic effect and thermal transport under static axial electrical field and with viscous heating. The third grade Reiner-Rivlin model is deployed for blood rheology. The novelty of the current work is therefore the simultaneous consideration of electrokinetics, viscoelastic behavior with the third grade Reiner-Rivlin model and coupled flow and heat transport with viscous dissipation in peristaltic pumping in a curved micro-channel. A Poisson-Boltzmann formulation is adopted to simulate the charge number density associated with the electrical potential. Asymmetric zeta potential (25 mV) is prescribed and mobilizes an electric double layer (EDL). The governing conservation equations for mass, energy, momentum and electrical potential with associated boundary conditions are simplified using lubrication approximations and rendered dimensionless via appropriate scaling transformations. Analytical solutions are derived in the form of Bessel functions and numerical evaluations are conducted via the ND solver command in MATHEMATICA symbolic software. The simulations show that with stronger viscoelastic effect, boluses are eliminated and there is relaxation in streamlines in the core and peripheral regions of the micro-channel. Increasing Brinkman number (dissipation parameter) elevates temperatures. An increase in electrical double layer thickness initially produces a contraction in the upper bolus and an expansion (lateral) in the lower bolus in the micro-channel. With modification in zeta potential ratio parameter from positive to negative values, in the lower half of the micro-channel, axial flow deceleration is generated.

Abstract:A microfluidic channel with a constriction produced poor mixing conditions under periodic electro-osmotic flow. However, the mixing performance may be enhanced significantly by altering other parameters. Numerical simulations are used to investigate the effect of the direct current electric field (EDC), phase difference (ϕ), and length of constriction (L). A mathematical model, based on the structural features of the Lagrange function rather than its application, is proposed to establish a relationship between the mixing performance and these three parameters. The feasibility analysis has been carried out, and the results are verified by the data from simulation and experiment.

Abstract:Dynamic characteristics of electroosmosis of a typical non-Newtonian liquid in a rectangular microchannel are investigated by using numerical simulations. The non-Newtonian behavior of liquids is assumed to obey the famous power-law model and then the mathematical model is solved numerically by using the finite element method. The results indicate that the non-Newtonian effect produces some noticeable dynamic responses in electroosmotic flow. Under a direct current (DC) driving electric field, it is found that the fluid responds more inertly to an external electric field and the steady-state velocity profile becomes more plug-like as the flow behavior index decreases. Under an alternating current (AC) driving electric field, the fluid is observed to experience more significant acceleration and the amplitude of oscillating velocity becomes larger as the fluid behavior index decreases. Furthermore, our investigation also shows that electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids under an AC/DC combined driving field is enhanced as compared with that under a pure DC electric field. These dynamic predictions are of practical use for the design of electroosmotically-driven microfluidic devices that analyze and process non-Newtonian fluids such as biofluids and polymeric solutions.
Electrokinetic Energy Conversion of Two-Layer Fluids Through Nanofluidic Channels

Abstract:Based on the Onsager reciprocal relation in the linear response regime, we first clarify the equivalence of thermodynamic and electric circuit analyses for electrokinetic energy conversion. Then we present a streaming-potential-based nanofluidic energy conversion system which comprises two immiscible fluids that form a flat interface in a slit-like channel. The validity of the Onsager reciprocal relation to such a two-fluid system is verified. The performance of such an energy converter is illustrated by considering two concrete oil–water systems with different properties. In both cases, we predict that the binary system with a thin oil layer increases both the maximum output power and the energy conversion efficiency, and this enhancement depends strongly on the mobile charges present at the oil–water interface, the salt concentration and the interface location. Concretely, for negatively charged interfaces, we find that the optimal efficiency increases with the interfacial charge for relatively thin oil layers; while for relatively thick oil layers, the interfacial charge has the opposite effect (i.e. reduction effect) on the energy conversion efficiency in the ranges of the parameters. We further investigate these systems from the viewpoint of energy transfer by deriving the related energy equation. We find that viscous dissipation consumes most of the power (more than 90 %), in both single-phase and two-fluid flows. However, the ratio of the viscous dissipation to the power input decreases with increase of the interfacial charge density for the case of a relatively thin oil layer in two-fluid flows. Meanwhile, although the presence of interfacial charges can lead to an increase in electrical dissipation, the amount of the increased power consumption is less than that of the reduced viscous dissipation in the case of a thin oil layer. Therefore, for two-fluid energy converters, the total power consumption can be reduced and the efficiency is improved.
The Impacts of Viscoelastic Behavior on Electrokinetic Energy Conversion for Jeffreys Fluid in Microtubes

Abstract:In this paper, the electrokinetic energy conversion (EKEC) efficiency, streaming potential of viscoelastic fluids in microtubes under an external transversal magnetic field, and an axial pressure gradient are investigated. The Jeffreys fluid is applied to model the viscoelastic fluid, and the analytic solution of velocity field is obtained using the Green’s function method. The influence of different dimensionless parameters, for instance, the Deborah numbers De and De*, which are related to the relaxation time and retardation time, respectively; the dimensionless electro-kinetic width K; the dimensionless frequency ω; the volume fraction of the nanoparticles φ and the dimensionless Hartmann number Ha; and three different imposed axial periodic pressure gradients (cosine, triangular, and square) on fluid dynamics are discussed. The physical quantities are graphically described, and the influence of different parameters on the EKEC is analyzed. The results indicate that De promotes the streaming potential and EKEC efficiency of the microtube, while De* inhibits them.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flow (EOF) is one of the most important techniques in a microfluidic system. Many microfluidic devices are made from a combination of different materials, and thus asymmetric electrochemical boundary conditions should be applied for the reasonable analysis of the EOF. In this study, the EOF of power-law fluids in a slit microchannel with different zeta potentials at the top and bottom walls are studied analytically. The flow is assumed to be steady, fully developed, and unidirectional with no applied pressure. The continuity equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, and the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation are solved for the velocity field. The exact solutions of the velocity distribution are obtained in terms of the Appell’s first hypergeometric functions. The velocity distributions are investigated and discussed as a function of the fluid behavior index, Debye length, and the difference in the zeta potential between the top and bottom.

Abstract:By perturbation method, this article presents asymptotic analytical solutions for streaming potential and electrokinetic energy conversion (EKEC) efficiency of two immiscible fluids between microparallel plates. The results show that the EKEC efficiency can be enhanced obviously by the permittivity and viscosity ratios, the maximum efficiency is about 67% and 28%, respectively, but shows a decreasing trend with the interface electric potential difference, the maximum efficiency is about 44%. This indicates that the permittivity and viscosity ratios can improve the energy conversion efficiency. Furthermore, we company the EKEC efficiency in two-layer and single-layer fluid. It is found that the conversion efficiency of two-layer fluid systems can be higher than that of single-layer fluid systems by up to 50%. This work adds a quantitative dimension to the understanding of the interplay between physical parameters, and manipulation of interfaces can effectively facilitate the separation of biological samples and direct the flow direction of fluids in flow-switching devices.

Abstract:Electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids in a slit channel is analyzed. The governing equations including the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the Cauchy momentum equation, and the continuity equation are solved to seek analytical expressions for the shear stress, dynamic viscosity, and velocity distribution. Specifically, exact solutions of the velocity distributions are explicitly found for several special values of the flow behavior index. Furthermore, with the implementation of an approximate scheme for the hyperbolic cosine function, approximate solutions of the velocity distributions are obtained. In addition, a generalized Smoluchowski velocity is introduced by taking into account contributions due to the finite thickness of the electric double layer and the flow behavior index of power-law fluids. Calculations are performed to examine the effects of kappaH, flow behavior index, double layer thickness, and applied electric field on the shear stress, dynamic viscosity, velocity distribution, and average velocity/flow rate of the electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids.

Abstract:The electroosmotic flow of non-Newtonian fluids in deformable microchannels is fundamentally important in the understanding of the hydrodynamics in physiological flows. The performance of these microchannels is governed by the load bearing capacity indicating the maximum amount of load that the device can withstand. While significant research efforts are aimed towards the coupling of electrokinetics with substrate deformability, the corresponding enhancement in the performances still remains elusive. Towards this, employing an intricate coupling between substrate compliance, hydrodynamic, and electrokinetic modulations, we have analyzed the possible sources of alterations in the flow physics in a deformable microchannel under the rheological premises of viscoelastic fluids which have a close resemblance with biological fluids typically used in several bio and micro-fluidic applications. The present study reveals that by operating under favorable regimes of parameters like the concentration and molecular weight of the polymer, the quality of the Newtonian solvent, and the concentration of electrolyte, one can achieve substantial augmentation in the load carrying capacity of a deformable microchannel for viscoelastic fluids as compared to its Newtonian counterpart. We believe that the present theoretical framework can be extremely important in the designing of electro-kinetically modulated bio-mimetic microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Electrokinetic flow can be generated as a highly coupled phenomenon among velocity fields, electric conductivity fields, and electric fields. It can exhibit different responses to AC electric fields in different frequency regimes, according to different instability/receptivity mechanisms. In this investigation, by both flow visualization and single-point laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method, the response of AC electrokinetic flow and the transition routes towards chaos and turbulence have been experimentally investigated. It is found, when the AC frequency Hz, the interface responds at both the neutral frequency of the basic flow and the AC frequency. However, when Hz, the interface responds only at the neutral frequency of the basic flow. Both periodic doubling and subcritical bifurcations have been observed in the transition of AC electrokinetic flow. We hope the current investigation can promote our current understanding of the ultrafast transition process of electrokinetic flow from laminar state to turbulence.

For a fully developed, steady state, laminar flow of two liquids combined the pressure gradient and the electroosmotic effects, we have derived analytical solutions that relate the velocity profiles and flow rates to the liquid holdup, the aspect ratio of the microchannel, the viscosity ratio of the two liquids and the externally applied electric field.

Abstract:Electro-osmotic flows of non-Newtonian fluids play an important role in microdevices and microfluidic systems. A theoretical and numerical analyses are conducted to explore the characteristics of electro-osmotic flow of non-Newtonian Eyring fluids in a circular microtube under the Navier's slip boundary condition. The exact solution of velocity distribution as well as corresponding approximate solution is obtained. The effects of slip length, electrokinetic parameter and non-Newtonian characteristics on the electro-osmotic flows are discussed and plotted graphically.
