Abstract:An aging workforce has adversely impacted the economy in Korea, amid growing fiscal challenges associated with providing pension and healthcare for older people. The increasing elderly population has raised concerns about the diminishing quality of life among seniors. This study explores the impact of retirement and re-employment on the life satisfaction of older individuals, utilizing longitudinal data from 2008 to 2020. To address endogeneity concerns, we use statutory eligibility ages for retirement pension benefits and the expected monetary value of these benefits as instrumental variables for retirement and re-employment status. Our findings suggest that retirement leads to a significant reduction in overall life satisfaction among older individuals. Conversely, life satisfaction improves significantly when retired individuals are re-employed. This study examines the dynamic effects of retirement on life satisfaction by employing the event study framework and investigating the reversal of retirement through re-employment. The findings emphasize that the life satisfaction of older individuals can be enhanced through policies that enable them to extend their employment or pursue new opportunities after retirement.

A Study on Multi-level Models in life satisfaction of Elderly Living alone : Moderating Effect of Elderly's Leisure Activity and Social Support

Abstract:This study aims to examine whether the life satisfaction of the elderly living alone is influenced by demographic background, economic activity, productive leisure participation and the moderating effect of social support. Data in this study was from 5th Korean Retirement Income Study, and 890 elderly living alone were extracted and analyzed, and a multi-level analysis was used to analyze the data because the life satisfaction of the elderly living alone has a random effect according to the region. The results of this study were as follows; First, the elderly living alone showed high life satisfaction when they live in province rather than Seoul or metropolitan city, spend higher living expenses, do economic activities, and they are economically independent. Second, those who participated in productive leisure activity were more satisfied with life than those who did not, and those who have social support are more satisfied with their life. Third, the relationship between productive leisure participation and life satisfaction was moderated by social support. When the elderly living alone participate in productive leisure activities, they feel more life satisfaction according to social support given to them.

Abstract:Background & Objective: Aging is a global trend, and Korea is also entering an aging society, which threatens the mental health of the elderly due to isolation, etc. In line with the growing domestic and international interest in elderly issues, this study aimed to identify the effects of depression, stress and self-esteem on the lives of the elderly in South Korea and to provide basic data for welfare measures. Methods: Depression, stress, self-esteem, and quality of life were measured in 104 South Korean seniors (32 men, 72 women, average age 72.94 years old). Differences between groups according to gender and residence type were confirmed. Results: There were no significant differences in stress among the elderly by place of residence, but there were significant differences in quality of life, depression, and self-esteem. Quality of life and self-esteem were higher in private housing than in public housing, and depression was higher in public housing than in private housing. In addition, lower depression and higher self-esteem were correlated with higher quality of life among the elderly. Conclusion: With the global trend of an aging society, it is essential to continue to pay attention to assist the lives of elderly and provide them with practical support and policies. Determinants of Health Status and Life Satisfaction among Older South Koreans

Abstract:South Korea is a rapidly aging society with the lowest fertility rates among the OECD economies. It is projected to become a super-aged society in 2025, with the share of individuals older than 65 reaching twenty percent. These developments make it important to analyze the determinants of health outcomes in older individuals. In this study, we identified the determinants of subjective and objective health outcomes among senior individuals in South Korea. We used self-rated health and life satisfaction scores as the two subjective health status indicators, while the number of chronic diseases was the objective one. We ran Tobit multivariate regressions of all three indicators on a set of factors related to the older citizens' physical, economic, and social characteristics. Active employment status and willingness to work in the future were positively related to self-rated health level but were not statistically related to life satisfaction, while income positively affected both subjective health status indicators. Age did not appear to affect satisfaction with life. Active leisure activities were positively related to both self-rated health and life satisfaction. In contrast, passive leisure, such as watching TV, was negatively related to both health status indicators while being associated with an increased number of chronic diseases. Our findings suggest that older South Koreans view employment primarily as a means of financial support rather than as an opportunity for active social engagement.

Public Support, Family Support, and Life Satisfaction of the Elderly: Evidence from a New Government Old-Age Pension in Korea

Abstract:Population aging is a global phenomenon occurring both in developed and less developed countries. While families are still playing an important role in providing support for elderly people, governments are also expanding their public old‐age support programs in many societies. Public pensions are one of the major policy tools geared to social protection of the elderly. However, little is known about how the programs affect elders particularly in terms of their subjective well‐being. Such effectiveness depends in part on the extent to which public pension income displaces or 'crowds out' family elder support. Using the introduction of the Basic Old‐Age Pension (BOAP), a non‐ contributory old‐age pension in Korea, this dissertation examines the relationship among public support, family support, and life satisfaction of the elderly. As an introductory chapter, chapter 1, " The continuing importance of children in relieving elder poverty: evidence from Korea, " describes the actual financial status of elderly Koreans and the amount of financial support they receive from children. Analysis of the 2006 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing shows that almost 70 percent of Koreans aged 65 or more years received financial transfers from children and that the transfers accounted for about a quarter of the average elder's income. While over 60 percent of elders would be poor without private transfers, children's transfers substantially mitigate elder poverty, filling about one quarter of the poverty gap. v Furthermore, children's transfers to low‐income parents tend to be proportionally larger, so elder income inequality is reduced by the transfers. Over 40 percent of elders lived with a child and co‐residence helps reduce elder poverty. Using the introduction of BOAP, chapter 2, " Does money buy happiness?: Evidence from a new government pension in Korea, " assesses how the program affected elders' life satisfaction. Notably, this study adds valuable evidence to the literature of whether money buys happiness, a question of great interest but notoriously difficult to answer given the difficulties associated with isolating income as a causal factor. To make the causal inference, this chapter utilizes a difference‐in‐difference research design and analyzes longitudinal data from the Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS). Results show that BOAP did raise elders' life satisfaction: annual benefits of 1,000 kW, approximately 1,000 U.S. dollars, raised elders' life satisfaction by 0.16‐0.22 of one standard deviation and the effect was statistically significant. The Moderating Effect of Personal Assets in the Relationships between Subjective Health, Housing Expense, and Life Satisfaction for Korean Middle and Old-Aged

Abstract:The proportion of the elderly in Korea has increased. Given the circumstances, this research is intended to explore the characteristics of the elderly. The aim of this research is to explore the antecedents of life satisfaction in the Korean elderly using subjective health. Next, the goal of this research is to appraise the moderating effect of personal assets in the relationship between life satisfaction and housing expenses. The study data consist of 7199 observations from the 2018 and 2020 waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLOSA). This research uses econometric analysis to test the research hypotheses, which include ordinary least squares, fixed-effects, and random-effects regression analyses. Following ordinary least squares, fixed-effects, and random-effects regression analyses, the results indicate a positive influence of subjective health on older Koreans' life satisfaction. Additionally, personal assets positively moderate the association between housing expense and life satisfaction, the most valuable finding of the study. This research sheds light on the literature by revealing the moderating effect on the relationship between housing expense and life satisfaction. Moreover, the results could be used for better policy design with respect to the middle- and old-aged members Korean society.

Abstract:This study aims to verify the effects of interpersonal relationships and social support factors on the life satisfaction of elderly people over 65 years old divided into three age groups while using Carstensen & Charles' Social Emotional Selection Theory as a foundation. Data from the 8th year supplementary survey of the National Retirement Security Panel (KReIS) were used, and the data of 1,117 elderly people aged 65 years of age or older who were living alone were extracted and analyzed. First, there were differences in educational background, number of children, economic activity, and average monthly income among the examined age groups. Interpersonal relationships, social support factors, and life satisfaction were also all found to differ between the three age groups. Second, it was confirmed that higher social support factors were associated with higher life satisfaction in all age groups. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed the effects of interpersonal relationships and social support factors on life satisfaction according to the characteristics of each age group of elderly people living alone, and based on these results, this study suggested practical intervention measures for social welfare as well as follow-up studies that should be conducted to improve life satisfaction among elderly people living alone

Abstract:The importance of productive activities and roles in society of older adults has been recognized in the contemporary aging societies. Although existing studies have revealed that individual human capital is an important factor in the productive participation of the elderly, the influence of the family has not been systematically considered. Using data from the 2th to 6th wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA), this study examined the effect of the individual and family characteristics on economic activities among older adults. The results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing all the elderly, only individual human capital characteristics had a significant effect on participation in economic activities. Second, as a result of analyzing male and female older adults separately, it was confirmed that individual characteristics and family characteristics had a significant effect on participation in economic activities. In particular, children's participation in the labor market related to the life changes of family members was an important factor influencing the economic activities of the elderly. Third, when transitioning from a state with some or all children not participating in the labor market to a state with all children participating in the labor market, it was found that male seniors are less likely to participate in economic activities while female seniors are more likely to participate in economic activities. Based on these research results, academic and policy implications were discussed.
Association of Social Frailty with Physical Health, Cognitive Function, Psychological Health, and Life Satisfaction in Community-Dwelling Older Koreans

Abstract:Social frailty affects various aspects of health in community-dwelling older adults. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of social frailty and the significance of its association with South Korean older adults’ health status and life satisfaction. This study involved a secondary data analysis of the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. From the 10,299 respondents of the survey, 10,081 were selected with no exclusion criteria. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to identify the factors related to life satisfaction. Compared with the robust and social prefrailty groups, the social frailty group had higher nutritional risk (χ2 = 312.161, p = 0.000), depressive symptoms (χ2 = 977.587, p = 0.000), cognitive dysfunction (χ2 = 25.051, p = 0.000), and lower life satisfaction (F = 1050.272, p = 0.000). The results of multiple linear regression, adjusted for sociodemographic and health-related characteristics, indicated that social frailty had the strongest negative association with life satisfaction (β = −0.267, p = 0.000). However, cognitive function was significantly positively associated with life satisfaction (β = 0.062, p = 0.000). Social frailty was significantly correlated with physical, psychological, and mental health as well as life satisfaction in community-dwelling older South Koreans. Therefore, accounting for the social aspect of functioning is an essential part of a multidimensional approach to improving health and life satisfaction in communities.

Abstract:This study examined the associations between social support from different relationship types (i.e., spouses, children, friends, and parents) and psychological well-being (i.e., happiness and depressive symptoms), and the mediating effects of basic psychological need satisfaction (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness) in these associations. A dataset on social support, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and psychological well-being was collected from 823 South Korean adults (the mean of age = 48.83; 50.40% male). Results showed that social support from spouses and friends had the most robust associations with happiness and depressive symptoms. In addition, the satisfaction of needs for autonomy and relatedness mediated the associations between social support from spouses and friends, and happiness and depressive symptoms. However, these associations differed by age groups. Although social support satisfied basic psychological needs better for younger adults than for older adults, the satisfaction of needs for autonomy and relatedness was critical in order to support well-being for both groups.

Abstract:Objectives: Social activities are important and influential factors for healthy aging. However, limited information is available regarding the associations of the type and intensity of social participation with health and well-being. This study aimed to investigate how various types of social activities are associated with several dimensions of health outcomes. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Seventh Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, which included 5,526 adults aged 60 years and older. Multivariate linear regression analysis was employed to analyze the associations of social activities with depression, self-rated health, and life satisfaction. Additionally, subgroup analyses by sex and age were performed. Results: Among the participants, 73.5% reported involvement in at least 1 of the 4 types of social engagement. After adjustment for all covariates, individuals who participated in any social activity reported better self-rated health and higher life satisfaction compared to those who did not participate. However, the intensity of engagement in different social activities had varying impacts on subjective health outcomes. An increased level of participation was associated with a lower rate of depression and improved self-rated health. However, no significant differences were observed in the relationship between the intensity of participation in activities (with the exception of alumni societies or family councils) and life satisfaction. Conclusion: This study suggests that to improve their health, older adults in the Republic of Korea should not only engage in social activities but also do so actively and regularly.
Social Support and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Elderly Individuals Living Alone in South Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important component of healthy aging. Elderly individuals living alone with health risks have rapidly increased in South Korea. Inadequate social support has been associated with poor HRQoL in elderly individuals who are currently living alone. Although studies of HRQoL in elderly subjects who live alone have been conducted, studies of the relationships between social support and HRQoL have rarely targeted the elderly individuals living alone.PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors that are related to HRQoL among the elderly individuals living alone in South Korea.METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used. Five hundred seventeen elderly individuals who were living alone in community dwellings and aged 65 years or older were included. The structured questionnaires included the 12-item Short-Form Health Survey, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, demographic characteristics, health status, and behavior factors. A descriptive analysis and hierarchical multivariate logistic regression were conducted to examine significant correlations between the variables.RESULTS: The mean score of the Physical Component Summary was 43.00 (± 4.82), and the mean score of the Mental Component Summary (MCS) was 45.94 (± 7.21). After controlling for demographic characteristics, health status, and behavior factors, support from significant others was negatively associated with the Physical Component Summary scores, whereas support from significant others, family, and friends was positively associated with the MCS scores.CONCLUSIONS: Social support emerged as an important factor in the HRQoL domains of the MCS of the participants. Future interventions should focus more on implementing effective social support strategies to improve HRQoL in elderly individuals who live alone.

Abstract:Abstract Age-friendliness studies in Korea have investigated a few subsets of the local community environments for older adults’ well-being. Little is known about comprehensively understanding which aspects in community contexts can help older individuals living alone improve their life satisfaction. To address the knowledge gaps, this study utilized the raw data from the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans, and responses of 3,112 older adult single-person households were investigated. From an ecological perspective, hierarchical regression analysis was performed by distinguishing the community environments into three categories of the World Health Organization’s age-friendly environments: physical, social, and service environments. The results showed that the perception of the physical environment (housing, living facilities, and space) was positively associated with life satisfaction. Second, the social environment (social involvement, neighbor interaction, respect for older individuals, and political activity) was positively related to life satisfaction. Third, perceived service environment (difficulty in utilizing service) was negatively related to life satisfaction. Based on the findings, we proposed political and practical recommendations. Specifically, as a physical environment aspect, effective budget allocation and policy attention should be required for the autonomy and independence of older adults living alone in their daily lives by ensuring that housing and circumstances are suitable for aging-in-place. As a societal component, initiatives must be established to promote participation in decision-making processes that result in a more favorable social perception through social inclusion. Finally, for the service environment, we must advocate for increased accessibility to community supportive services (mobility, health care, food delivery, communication, and information).

ObjectivesThis study investigated the association between functional limitations and depressive symptoms among older adults in South Korea, focusing on gender differences in the moderating roles of relationship satisfaction with family, friends, and neighbors.MethodsFixed-effect models were applied to five waves of data from the Korean Retirement and Income Study, encompassing 19,180 observations.ResultsIncreases in functional limitations were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms, regardless of gender. However, the moderating effects of relationship satisfaction differed by gender: For older women, satisfaction with family moderated the association, whereas for older men, satisfaction with friends played a moderating role.DiscussionThe findings suggest tailoring interventions to improve family relationships for women and friendships for men in mitigating depressive symptoms among functionally vulnerable older adults in Korea, where rapid population aging poses significant challenges to protect functional and mental health among older adults.

Abstract:This study investigates the factors that affect the retirement preparation strategy of the elderly in the current situation where retirement preparation strategies can be established with various financial products. Using the data from Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS), we analyze the current status and determinants of the appropriate cost of living for old age, the level of preparation for old age, and subscription to pension products judged by individuals. We found that individual characteristics, income characteristics, household characteristics, and occupational characteristics were influenced to individual retirement preparation strategies. In particular, the higher the level of education and income, the higher the possibility that an individual's reasonable cost of living in old age is higher, the possibility of preparing for old age, and the possibility of joining an annuity product. What is noteworthy is that the capital market environment has been created so that individuals can establish optimal retirement preparation strategies through the development of various financial products, but only a small number of people use them.
Social isolation and mental well-being among Korean older adults: a focus on living arrangements

Abstract:Introduction: The aging population in South Korea, characterized by an increasing number of older adults living alone, has raised concerns about its implications on mental health, specifically social isolation and loneliness that accompanies solitary living arrangements. This study explores the impact of living arrangements on the mental well-being of Korean older adults by focusing on the prevalence of depression and the role of social isolation in the context of evolving family structures and the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed the responses of older adults aged 65 years and above (mean: 73.1, SD: 5.1) by using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2018 and 2020. In total, responses from 3,365 older adults (1,653 in 2018 and 1,712 in 2020) were employed in this research. The participants' mental health status was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, with living arrangements categorized by household size. A zero-inflated Poisson regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between living arrangements and depression severity, controlling for demographic, socioeconomic, and psychological factors. Results: The study found that older adults living with others exhibited a lower depression severity than those living alone. Notably, the severity of depression decreased as the number of household members increased up to a certain threshold. Socio-economic factors, such as income level, marital status, and psychological stress were also identified as significant predictors of depression severity. However, the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a statistically significant impact on depression rates among older adults during the study period. Conclusion: Living arrangements play a critical role in the mental health of Korean older adults, with solitary living being associated with higher levels of depression. These findings underscore the importance of social support systems and suggest the need for policies and interventions that promote social connectivity and address the challenges of loneliness faced by them. Future research should explore longitudinal and qualitative studies to further understand causal relationships and develop targeted interventions to improve the mental well-being of the aging population.

Factors Influencing Life Satisfaction in Elderly Living Alone

Abstract:The main goal of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the life satisfaction of elderly individuals living alone. We analyzed the data obtained in 2016 through “Survey on Residents’Quality of Life in Gyeonggi Province”, performing stepwise multiple regression on 824 cases. The results were as follows: First, age, income, and education had a significant impact on life satisfaction, while sex, marital status, and employment had no influence on life satisfaction. Second, as individual-level factors, self-rated health, exercise, and participation in religious activities and social associations had a significant and positive impact on life satisfaction. Third, the results showed that both helping others in neighborhood and trusting people in the neighborhood, between-person factors, positively influenced their subjective quality of life, but receiving help from the neighborhood did not significantly affect life satisfaction. Fourth, satisfaction with cultural facilities, one of the physical environmental factors, was associated with life satisfaction. These results suggest that multi-level factors influencing life satisfaction should be considered to enhance the quality of life of elderly individuals. Longitudinal Examination of Stress and Depression in Older Adults Over a 2‐Year Period: Moderation Effect of Varied Social Support Measures

Abstract:Depressive symptoms and stress exposure fluctuate over time in community‐dwelling older adults, but they are frequently assessed using one‐time retrospective self‐report measures. Social support viewed as a multifaceted construct can play diverse moderating roles in this association although it is typically gauged through the measure of perceived social support. This study aims to explore the relationships between stress, social support, and depressive symptoms among older adults by utilizing the longitudinal data collected through a smartphone application and supplemented by annual face‐to‐face interviews conducted over a 2‐year period. Using longitudinal multilevel analysis, we analyzed the data on PHQ‐9, stress exposure, and four distinct measures of social support collected from 354 community‐dwelling older adults in South Korea. The results demonstrated that 59% of the variability in depressive symptoms was attributable to differences between individuals. Stress exposure was a strong predictor (γ = 3.01 ∗∗∗, 95% CI = 2.34–3.67). As expected, positive functional social support alleviated the effects of stress on depression (γ = −1.12 ∗∗, 95% CI = −1.92 ~ −0.32) while negative functional social support (γ = 2.36 ∗∗∗, 95% CI = 1.29–3.44) and negative structural social support (γ = 3.22 ∗, 95% CI = 0.79–5.64) worsened the effects of stress on depression. A notable finding is that stress‐amplifying effects from the negative functional and structural social support, in addition to well‐known stress‐buffering effects from positive functional social support, should be regarded as indispensable components in safeguarding the mental health of older adults. Considering the decline in social interactions and the lower probability of older adults establishing new social connections, it is essential to consider approaches that prevent a lack of functional and structural social support and foster a high‐quality of functional and structural social support, particularly for those facing greater stressors, as a preventative method against depressive symptoms.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the impact of retirement on marital satisfaction by gender on Koreans aged >45 years in a large, nationally representative cohort. Methods Retirement status and marital satisfaction data of 5867 individuals were analysed. Marital dissatisfaction was defined as a satisfaction score reduction of more than 10 points versus the previous wave. Lagged generalised estimating equation (GEE) models adjusted for demographics (age, sex, education level and household income), health‐related habits (smoking and drinking status) and comorbidities (obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and depression and frailty) were used to confirm the relationship between retirement and marital dissatisfaction. Results The final GEE model adjusted for covariates revealed sex‐specific differences in marital satisfaction after retirement. Whereas male retirees reported higher satisfaction than non‐retired men, female retiree responses revealed lower satisfaction than non‐retired women. Furthermore, these trends were consistent regardless of the time elapsed after retirement. Conclusions Marital satisfaction should be screened in women during the transition to retirement.

Relationship between social support and life satisfaction of the elderly: Focusing on the mediating effect of depression

Abstract:This study identified the direct effect of social support on depression and life satisfaction in the elderly and the mediating effect on life satisfaction through depression. The subjects of analysis were seniors aged 65 years or older, and the 6th year supplementary survey data and 7th year main survey data of the National Old Age Security Panel Data were used. The analysis method used Baron and Keney's analysis method for multiple regression analysis and mediation effect analysis, and then verified significance through the Sobel test. To summarize the research results, first, emotional support and material support were found to have a direct effect on depression. Second, emotional support, informational support, and material support had a direct effect on life satisfaction. Lastly, in social support, only emotional support was found to have a partial mediating effect on life satisfaction through depression. Based on the research results, policy and practical suggestions that can improve life satisfaction by alleviating depression by strengthening emotional support for the elderly were discussed.
