Abstract:Every year, a large amount of wastewater is discharged from various industries into the environment, and various methods are used to treat wastewater to reduce the amount of pollutants. Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemically based technique that generates coagulant species in situ from the electrodissolution of sacrificial anodes, usually made of iron or aluminum destabilizes suspended, dissolved, or emulsified pollutants by using an electric current. It has a potential in removing various kinds of pollutants including organic and inorganic contaminants for various types of wastewater. The effectiveness of EC process depends on various parameters including pH, electrode, operation time, and current density. The goal of this study is to review the most relevant literatures that were published recently. The main challenges associated with the EC process are electrode passivation and energy consumption. EC compared with other common methods has advantages such as reducing energy consumption and reducing operating costs.

Abstract:<p>Water shortage and quality deterioration are plaguing people all over the world. Providing sustainable and affordable treatment solutions to these problems is a need of the hour. Electrocoagulation (EC) technology is a burgeoning alternative for effective water treatment, which offers the virtues such as compact equipment, easy operation, and low sludge production. Compared to other water purification technologies, EC shows excellent removal efficacy for a wide range of contaminants in water and has great potential for addressing limitations of conventional water purification technologies. This review summarizes the latest development of principle, characteristics, and reactor design of EC. The design of key parameters including reactor shape, power supply type, current density, as well as electrode configuration is further elaborated. In particular, typical water treatment systems powered by renewable energy (solar photovoltaic and wind turbine systems) are proposed. Further, this review provides an overview on expanded application of EC in the removal of some newly concerned pollutants in recent years, including arsenite, perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals, oil, bacteria, and viruses. The removal efficiency and mechanisms of these pollutants are also discussed. Finally, future research trend and focus are further recommended. This review can bridge the large knowledge gap for the EC application that is beneficial for environmental researchers and engineers.</p>

Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC) is an excellent and promising technology in wastewater treatment, as it combines the benefits of coagulation, flotation, and electrochemistry. During the last decade, extensive researches have focused on removal of emerging contaminants by using electrocoagualtion, due to its several advantages like compactness, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, low sludge production, and eco-friendness. Emerging contaminants (ECs) are micropollutants found in trace amounts that discharging into conventional wastewater treatment (WWT) plants entering surface waters and imposing a high threat to human and aquatic life. Various studies reveal that about 90% of emerging contaminants are disposed unscientifically into water bodies, creating problems to public health and environment. The studies on removal of emerging contaminants from wastewater are by global researchers are critically reviewed. The core findings proved that still more research required into optimization of parameters, system design, and economic feasibility to explore the potential of EC combined systems. This review has introduced an innovative collection of current knowledge on electro-coagulation for the removal of emerging contaminants.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC), an newly arising electrochemical technology, gained more advances than other electrochemical technologies on wastewater treatment in recent years, including the absence of secondary chemical pollution, simplicity of equipment, and formation of large flocs than traditional chemical coagulation. Combined with existing treatment methods, such as membrane processes, adsorption and activated sludge, EC helps encounter existing issues and enhance the efficiency of current technologies. This paper reviews recent studies on the integration of EC and other technologies to illustrate the performance of the combined systems, especially the role played by EC. Then the advantages and the limitations of the integrated systems are assessed, as well as the challenges and future directions are discussed. Considering the growing global concern over water scarcity and environmental degradation, the application of EC-integrated systems represents a viable and indispensable solution for sustainable water management. This literature review intends to be helpful to researchers, investors, and government officials working and making long-range planning process on wastewater treatments.

Abstract: Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical method of treating polluted water where sacrificial anodes corrode to release active coagulant precursors (usually aluminum or iron cations) into solution. At the cathode, gas evolves (usually as hydrogen bubbles) accompanying electrolytic reactions. EC needs simple equipments and is designable for virtually any size. It is cost effective and easily operable. Specially, the recent technical improvements combined with a growing need for small-scale water treatment facilities have led to a revaluation of EC. In this chapter, the basic principle of EC was introduced first. Following that, reactions at the electrodes and electrode assignment were reviewed; electrode passivation process and activation method were presented; comparison between electrocoagulation and chemical coagulation was performed; typical design of the EC reactors was also described; and factors affecting electrocoagulation including current density, effect of conductivity, temperature, and pH were introduced in details. Finally, application of EC in water treatment was given in details.

Abstract:A huge amount of oily wastewater is discharged annually from several industries like petroleum and petrochemical factories. Scientists and researchers are permanently concentrated on creating conventional technologies or identifying novel treatment options for oily wastewaters, since they need to be treated before being discharged into the soil and aquatic ecosystems. Electrocoagulation technology (ECT) is an electrochemical method employed to remove numerous pollutants from domestic and industrial wastewaters. This paper aims to review the recently published articles from 2018 to 2022 concerned with ECT for oily wastewater remediation. Based on the present review, it is obvious that ECT is strongly dependent on the value of electric current or voltage applied to provide the required amounts of electro-coagulants for efficient remediation, reaction time duration for the generation of electro-coagulants and pollutants elimination, and electrode configuration such as shape, type of metal, and distance between electrodes. Other operating parameters include solution pH (since some pollutants are removed based on their cationic or anionic nature), type of electrolyte which affects the electric conductivity and ohmic drop and stirring speed that may influence the contact among numerous ions throughout the EC reactor. The core findings show that the ECT is highly effective, eco-friendly, and cost-effective in eliminating organic and inorganic pollutants from oily wastewater.

Abstract:Various types of industries discharge their untreated contaminated water into the environment every year. This untreated water contains the pollutants that can negatively affect the environment and biosphere. Many methods are under practice at the moment to treat this wastewater. Among the variety of methods proposed and employed currently is the electrocoagulation (EC) method. This technique involves destabilizing the pollutants of the wastewater through the electric current flowing between the electrodes. The electrodes are mainly made of iron or aluminum. Over the past years, this technique has shown a great potential towards removal of different pollutant types from variety of wastewater. Like many other processes, the EC method is also governed and affected by various parameters such as pH, operation time, types of electrodes, and current density. It is important to keep these parameters under check and at the optimum desired value for the maximum pollutant removal. The optimum value depends upon the wastewater and the composition of the contaminants to be segregated. The present study reviews and compares the efficiency of EC with other methods in use so far. Compared to other methods, EC is shown to be energy efficient and reducing operation costs. The study also presents the challenges faced by this technique, such as electrode passivation, and the possible ways to deal with them in order to improve the overall performance effectiveness.

Abstract:Treatment of wastewater from industries for meeting the effluent discharge standards is a challenging task. Electrochemical methods, especially electrocoagulation (EC) process received great attention due to its ability to treat wastewater from various industries effectively at a lesser cost. The COD and color removal efficiencies of the EC process are above 80% for almost all industrial wastewater. Also, the energy requirement for the EC process is very less compared to other removal processes. Abstract:Efficient treatment and purification of mineral processing wastewater (MPW) have not been sufficiently investigated in the past though they are of great importance for sustainable mineral processing. Herein, a unique electrocoagulation (EC) reactor with aluminium scraps as anode material was developed for the treatment of real industrial MPW containing residual flotation reagents (major contributor to chemical oxygen demand, COD) and suspended particles. It was found that the active coagulants produced from the dissolution of aluminium scraps can play a key role in the purification of MPW. Under the conditions of initial pH 9, current 1 A, and processing time 90 min, the removal rate of COD was 74% while the turbidity can be almost completely removed. The mechanism lies in that most of the flotation reagents was adsorbed on the surfaces of suspended mineral particles, namely, montmorillonite, quartz, garnet, chlorite and mica, and then precipitated with the mineral particles. This innovative technology of utilizing wasted aluminium scraps to treat MPW is in line with the green development.

Abstract:Agro-based final discharge is one of the major contributors to wastewater in the world. It creates high demand for efficient treatment. The electrocoagulation process can be used for agro-based wastewater treatment. The performance of the electrocoagulation process is based on several parameters, including the electrode materials, electrolysis time, current density, and electrolyte support. Agro-based industrial wastewater (AIW) treatment processes depend on the characteristics of the wastewater. The removal of organic content from various sources of AIW can reach up to more than 80%. Some studies show that the performance of the electrochemical process can be increased using a combination with other methods. Those other methods include biological and physical treatment. The results of previous research show that organic content and color can be degraded completely. The relationship between the energy consumption and operating cost was analyzed in order to show the efficiency of electrocoagulation treatment.

Abstract:This review explores the potential and challenges of combining electrochemical, especially electrocoagulation (EC) process, with various - wastewater treatment methods such as membranes, chemical treatments, biological methods, and oxidation processes to enhance pollutant removal and reduce costs. It emphasizes the advantages of using electrochemical processes as a pretreatment step, including increased volume and improved quality of permeate water, mitigation of membrane fouling, and lower environmental impact. Pilot-scale studies are discussed to validate the effectiveness of combined EC processes, particularly for industrial wastewater. Factors such as electrode materials, coating materials, and the integration of a third process are discussed as potential avenues for improving the environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the combined EC processes. This review also discusses factors for improvement and explores the EC process combined with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). The conclusion highlights the need for combined EC processes, which include reducing electrode consumption, evaluating energy efficiency, and conducting pilot-scale investigations under continuous flow conditions. Abstract:One of the challenges of the twenty-first century is related to the discharge and disposal of mine effluents and wastewater resulting from mine dewatering, precipitation, and surface runoff in mines, especially acidic effluents that contain a variety of toxic and heavy metals and are the main sources of surface and groundwater pollution. Various physical, chemical, and biological methods have been developed and used to treat mine effluents. All proposed methods have their own disadvantages that make their use challenging. One of the new methods used for wastewater treatment is the electrical coagulation process, which has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years due to its advantages such as simplicity, environmental friendliness, and low cost. The present review focused on the applications of electrocoagulation for mine wastewater treatment as well as metals recovery. In addition, the main mechanisms, advantages, and weaknesses of electrocoagulation were reviewed.

Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC) is one of the emerging technologies in groundwater and wastewater treatment as it combines the benefits of coagulation, sedimentation, flotation, and electrochemical oxidation processes. Extensive research efforts implementing EC technology have been executed over the last decade to treat chemical oxygen demand (COD)-rich industrial wastewaters with the aim to protect freshwater streams (e.g., rivers, lakes) from pollution. A comprehensive review of the available recent literature utilizing EC to treat wastewater with high COD levels is presented. In addition, recommendations are provided for future studies to improve the EC technology and broaden its range of application. This review paper introduces some technologies which are often adopted for industrial wastewater treatment. Then, the EC process is compared with those techniques as a treatment for COD-rich wastewater. The EC process is considered as the most privileged technology by different research groups owing to its ability to deal with abundant volumes of wastewater. After, the application of EC as a single and combined treatment for COD-rich wastewaters is thoroughly reviewed. Finally, this review attempts to highlight the potentials and limitations of EC. Related to the EC process in batch operation mode, the best operational conditions are found at 10 V and 60 min of voltage and reaction time, respectively. These last values guarantee high COD removal efficiencies of > 90%. This review also concludes that considerably large operation costs of the EC process appears to be the serious drawback and renders it as an unfeasible approach for handling of COD rich wastewaters. In the end, this review has attempted to highlights the potential and limitation of EC and suggests that vast notably research in the field of continuous flow EC system is essential to introduce this technology as a convincing wastewater technology.

Abstract:This review discusses recent advancements in electrocoagulation (EC) technology for water and wastewater treatment, focusing on optimizing energy efficiency for sustainability. The review highlights key improvements in reactor design and electrode arrangement, leading to decreased energy usage and enhanced pollutant removal efficiency. Cutting-edge technologies are explored, including continuous flow single-channel (CFSC) reactors, perforated electrodes, packed bed EC, and air-breathing cathode, demonstrating improved efficiency and reduced energy consumption. An analysis is conducted to assess the effectiveness of various strategies, such as electrode cleaning and alternating current (AC) or pulse current (APC), in reducing fouling and enhancing efficiency by mitigating passivation effects. Additionally, the potential of incorporating hydrogen (H2) recovery into EC systems is discussed to improve wastewater treatment and energy generation, thereby enhancing economic and environmental sustainability. The review also considers the integration of EC with renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, which provides a sustainable and energy-efficient solution. However, the intermittency of renewable energy sources and the upfront expenses associated with their integration are challenges that must be addressed. This comprehensive review underscores the importance of continuous innovation and optimization in EC technology to achieve greater sustainability and efficiency in water and wastewater treatment. Abstract:In this research, wastewater treatment was inspected on a pilot-scale wastewater treatment plant by electrochemical techniques, electrocoagulation (EC), electroflotation (EF) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The wastewater samples have been characterised by applying different parameters to determine optimum working conditions of the electrocoagulation reactor. Two electrodes have been tested separately with an outflow coming from primary and secondary sedimentation tank. The outflows from these tanks are introduced in EC reactor then EC reactor efficacy is determined for the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids, micropollutants and amount of coagulants in agglomerates at different current densities. The amounts of suspended solids (SS) in influent and effluent streams were determined by the membrane filtration technique. The operational applied current values range from 1–4 A in the case of COD removal by Fe and Al. While for SS aggregation the applied current ranges from 0.5–3 A and inflow rate was tested from 250 to 500 L/h. The pH of outflows increased by increasing applied current and both of these parameters were found a positive increase in the amount of SS aggregations after EC treatment. Furthermore, the COD removal efficiency was found to be 56–57 % and 12–18 % in case Fe and Al electrode respectively after EC treatment. The results showed that applied current is the most effective parameter, whereas the aluminium electrodes have produced more amounts of flocs and bubbles in comparison to iron electrodes at similar amount of current density.

Abstract:Global water demand and environmental concerns related to climate change require industries to develop high-efficiency wastewater treatment methods to remove pollutants. Likewise, toxic pollutants present in wastewater negatively affect the environment and human health, requiring effective treatment. Although conventional treatment processes remove carbon and nutrients, they are insufficient to remove pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plasticizers. Electrochemical processes effectively remove pollutants from wastewater through the mineralization of non-biodegradable pollutants with consequent conversion into biodegradable compounds. Its advantages include easy operation, versatility, and short reaction time. In this way, this review initially provides a global water scenario with a view to the future. It comprises global demand, treatment methods, and pollution of water resources, addressing various contaminants such as heavy metals, nutrients, organic compounds, and emerging contaminants. Subsequently, the fundamentals of electrochemical treatments are presented as well as electrochemical treatments, highlighting the latest studies involving electrocoagulation, electroflocculation, electroflotation, capacitive deionization and its derivatives, eletrodeionization, and electrochemical advanced oxidation process. Finally, the challenges and perspectives were discussed. In this context, electrochemical processes have proven promising and effective for the treatment of water and wastewater, allowing safe reuse practices and purification with high contaminant removal.

Abstract:The high voltage pulsed electrocoagulation technology is an ideal technique for the treatment to the wastewater and has a great potential for its application.The principles of the high voltage pulsed electrocoagulation technology and the operation characteristics for wastewater treatment were summarized.Application examples of the treatment to the electroplating wastewater were described.The application results show that the pollutants in the electroplating wastewater can be removed efficiently with the optimum operation conditions,and the residual metal concentrations of the wastewater under legal limits of industrial water were obtained.The existing problems in the applications and the developing trends of the technology were discussed.

Abstract:In drinking water treatment, coagulation is the most common process to remove particles and impurities. It is described as the process whereby particles are destabilised by dosing a chemical additive (coagulant) where charge neutralisation (CN) and sweep coagulation (SC) are the major mechanisms. Due to the encountered difficulties in natural organic matter (NOM) removal, the concept of enhanced coagulation (EnC) was introduced to increase NOM removal where CN is more accentuated. EnC must be well optimised to overcome its practical considerations such as adjusting the pH of the source water and residual metal concentration in the treated water. In the last three decades, there is new tendency to use electric field/electrochemistry in some chemical processes especially chemical coagulation (CC). Indeed, literature has proved that electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising water treatment technology. During EC process, there are two induced phenomena: electrophoresis (EP) and electroflotation (EF); separately, they are well known in electrochemistry’s applications and well developed technically and mathematically. How important are these inherent phenomena in EC process efficiency, constitutes the main aim of this review. Moreover, this paper tries to discuss some aspects of coagulation/flocculation, EP, EF, and EC. Since EP depends upon DC electric field, using anode and cathode as for EC for which the anode is sacrificial, it takes place in the EC device and contributes to its performance. Indeed, the first responsible mechanism of EC performance is the migration to an oppositely charged electrode, i.e., EP, and aggregation due to CN. Hence, EP contributes essentially to EC efficiency as EF does with H2(g) bubbles liberation from the cathode. The EF’s contribution may be increased when O2(g) is produced from the anode, at the same time with metal ion liberation. However, as EC process is in fact the combination of these three simultaneous processes need more mathematical, technical, and practical studies to quicken its industrial application at a large scale.
