Abstract:Textbooks are the core materials for students to study and read.There are three functions of a textbook:first,it is for students to read;second,it is for students to consult,and third,it is for instructors to refer to.Considering the abundant western literary works of the 20th century,the literary history is the core element,which contributes to the choice and study of the most valuable literary works.In order to develop a good textbook on the western literature history of the 20th century,it is important to challenge the traditional concept that the textbook is only for instructors to teach and for students to study.Instead,a textbook of the history of literature is not only the teaching guide for instructors but also a guiding book for scholarly study and exploration.
Foreign / World Literature: The Problem of Nominative Definition

Abstract:The terminological load of the phrase “foreign / world literature” is outlined. The attention is focused on the semantic, cultural-historical, epistemological features of this concept. Literature as a verbal art, being formed since the time of oral folk creativity, reflects the corresponding established canon in the national expression, accordingly, the dynamics of the world literary process. It is emphasized that the development of national literatures had strengthened the nature of explicit-implicit literary relationships. It contributed to the formation of new genres, artistic tastes, as well as to the expansion of the recipient`s worldview, and, accordingly, literary concepts. Controversial interpretations of Goethe’s term “Weltliteratur” are considered: supporters who perceived literature as one general world synthesis (F. Moretti) and scientists who predicted the collapse of the views of the German classics (E. Auerbach). The scientific discourse of the 20th century is assumed. Diverse interpretations of the “world literature” paradigm is understood as a collection of all works from antiquity to modern times; an anthology of the best literary texts (a kind of canonization); as a high-quality cultural and intellectual mutual enrichment. The significant contribution to the formation of the “world / foreign literature” paradigm of comparative studies and sociocultural research is emphasized (the works of P. Sorokin, O. Biletsky, L. Gumilyov, G. Gachev, D. Dyuryshin, A. Volkov of the Chernivtsi TPI School). Outlining the term world / foreign literature in the general literary process, the modern concepts of Western literary critics (E. Auerbach, P. Casanova, K. Prado and T. Samuayo, F. Moretti, D. Damrosch, R. Thomsen, J. David, N. Esenlilioglu, S. Uhliga and C. Zhang) are assumed. It is concluded that the diversity of the interpretation of the term “world / universal / foreign” literature directly depends on the historical, cultural and epistemological approaches to considering this issue; however, for all researchers there are common criteria for the nominative definition of the given paradigm – comprehensiveness, canons of a certain method, anthropological value, and participation in globalization processes.

Abstract:This article discusses the issues of teaching humanities to foreign students of additional educational programs. The authors share their experience of teaching literature to students of philology at the pre-university stage at the Institute of International Education of Voronezh State University. The relevance of the article lies in the characteristics of the language of the specialty in the field of literary studies. The relevance of this article is to identify the features of pre-professional training in the literature of foreign students at the pre-university stage of education. The authors emphasize the need to form the language of the specialty among foreign students-humanities, along with students of other fields. A brief overview of productive techniques and methods of teaching the discipline "Literature" in a foreign audience is given. The authors pay special attention to the practical significance of the textbook "Literature. Fundamentals of the Theory and History of Russian Literature", developed and published at the Institute of International Education. This publication is an effective and modern tool that allows you to form the language of the specialty of foreign students-humanities during the pre-university stage of training. The textbook on literature is universal in content for different specialties of humanitarian orientation. It also contains a system of methodological tools that form students not only the basics of the specialty language, but also language and speech competencies. In conclusion, the authors share the results of further training of graduates of additional educational programs.

Abstract:The research is presented in the form close to a fundamentally annotated bibliography demonstrating how European literary experience was advanced in the first quarter of the 19th c. in Russia at the time when contemporary Russian literature was being shaped. Six parts are devoted successively to French, German, English, Italian, Spanish, and classical literatures. The major aspects of research are outlined in an extensive foreword (E. Dmitrieva, M. Koreneva). Highlights include: Comparative analysis of the international contacts of Russian literature; a new interest in the novel, the genre that manifested a new literary taste; publishing and the audience in Russia compared to other European cultures; the birth of literary criticism on the margins of rhetoric; the evolution of a literary taste where gallomania was being substituted by anglo- and germanophilia; the change in the forms of contacts from imitation to stylization in accordance with the formula suggested by Konstantin Batyushkov ‘The stranger’s treasure is mine.’

Abstract:Postmodernism is a complex and multifaceted trend in the literature of the second half of the twentieth century. In the process of studying it, students of philology encounter difficulties both in understanding the theoretical base and in applying theoretical knowledge in the analysis of a literary text. The material of the article suggests the stages of work on the study of literary postmodernism, indicates the principles of selection of theoretical concepts, clearly demonstrates information that is significant for understanding the essence of the phenomenon in diagrams. Numerous scientific works present different points of view on the time of the emergence of postmodernism, the nature of its relationship with the previous literary tradition, immerse the consciousness of students in the world of extensive terminology, in which it is difficult for students to see the components necessary for analyzing a postmodern work. By virtue of this, it becomes important to highlight the features characteristic of postmodernism that can represent the uniqueness of the phenomenon under study, establish its place in the system of development of foreign literature, and determine the elements of postmodern aesthetics. The research is associated with the task of deepening students’ skills in analyzing and interpreting a literary text based on a hermeneutic approach. As a result of the work carried out in the course of the practical lesson, the skills of the systemic and holistic perception of the literary process, acquired by the students during the study of the course “History of Foreign Literature”, are consolidated.

Abstract:The article deals with the issue of teaching foreign literature. The role of literature in a classroom has been re-assessed recently and many now view literary texts as providing rich linguistic input, effective stimuli for students to express themselves in other languages and a potential source of learner motivation. The literature used in classrooms today is no longer restricted to canonical texts from certain countries e.g. UK, USA, but includes the work of writers from a diverse range of countries and cultures using different forms of English. Literary texts can be studied in their original forms or in simplified or abridged versions. An increasing number of stories in English are written specifically for learners of other languages. Literary texts provide opportunities for multi-sensorial classroom experiences and can appeal to learners with different learning styles. Literary texts offer a rich source of linguistic input and can help learners to practise the four skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing – in addition to exemplifying grammatical structures and presenting new vocabulary. Teachers should be ready to provide a background for the reading to take place. In an ideal situation, the preparation would help motivate the student to want to read, and a bit of creative imagination would also be required here.

Abstract:The current problems of professional competence of literary texts analysis development of prospective Foreign Literature teachers on the background of an integrated approach are considered in the given study. It is established that the introduction of this approach is carried out in the process of developing students’ personal image of each lesson topic in accordance with the school curriculum, expanding students’ associative links, their ability to interact with cultural images of different eras and countries, developing emotional and value-based attitude to the world and their place in it. The aim of the research is to develop the technique of an integrated approach to the analysis of a literary text taking into account aesthetic, culturological, and psychological backgrounds of perception of a literary text as a fiction text, age peculiarities of students’ understanding and interpretation of literary works. In the process of the given study it is found out that the introduction of the idea of an integrated approach to the text analysis in school encourages the teacher to go beyond their subject, when the teacher is able to comprehend the material from philosophical, literary, art, and cultural standpoints, aware of the place of their subject in culture; in the course of the analysis of the literary text the teacher uses various possibilities of interaction of literature with other kinds of art to provide direct participation of pupils in the independent analysis of the literary text and the organization of their art and creative activity at the lesson. The range of opening tasks that the teacher must perform in the course of preparation for such a literature lesson is defined. On the background of the analysis of the experience of teachers-practitioners, students’ answers and their creative work it is concluded that the creative activity of teachers and students within an integrated approach to the text analysis cannot be limited by mentioned activities in the classroom but it should be closely connected with extracurricular activities as well.

Abstract:The article puts insight into current issues of teaching the Russian literary language to foreign under-graduates and postgraduates, specializing in “Linguistics and Intercultural Communication”, in the course of studying “Modern Russian Literature”. We use a broad historical and cultural context to substantiate the fundamental role of Russian literature in the formation of world culture and the global literary canon, and highlight the great influence that such Russian classical writers as Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Turgenev and Chekhov had on the development of foreign literature in the East and West. We observe and trace continuity in classical and modern literary eras and the best long-lasting spiritual, moral and linguistic traditions of the Russian people. We assume that the key problems the teacher should focus on are: Russian literature as a significant phenomenon of world culture, the development of classical traditions in the history of Russian literature at present, the dialogue among cultures and the translation of modern writers’ works into foreign languages, historical and philosophical problems in literature, and historical heritage of the Russian language. The article comprehensively studies the Russian language value dimensions and linguistic axiological directions. The data show the presence, stability and preservation of the fundamental values (life, love, truth, good, beauty, hope, grace, honour, etc.) in the Russian literary language. These values form the spiritual conceptual sphere in Russian culture and constitute its main moral foundations. Serious attention is paid to the aesthetics of the language. We show the aesthetic potential, artistic expressiveness and stylistic richness of the modern Russian literary language, based on the works of E. Vodolazkin, L. Ulitskaya, M. Shishkin, M. Kucherskaya, M. Stepnova, D. Rubina and others. We focus on the problem of preserving the Russian literary language and the high status of Russian in general, revealing complex realities of modern multinational and multicultural world. We recommend such modern masterpieces as “Laurel” by E. Vodolazkin, “The God of Rain” by M. Kucherskaya, “The Garden” by M. Stepnova, “The Writer” by M. Shishkin, “Yakov’s Staircase” by L. Ulitskaya as sources to improve literacy and general cultural competence of foreign students.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.

Abstract:The present article discusses issues related to the analysis of the Renaissance study while developing students’ language proficiency at Art History Department. The diversity of the topic dictates the need to search for new developments of the course in order to achieve better results in acquiring a professionally oriented foreign language. The study of the Renaissance heritage takes place within the framework of a methodically sound and logically structured course, which includes particular language tools. These are the creation of a period’s “mental map”; studying videos; reading, analyzing and critically comprehending various texts’ types; translating, abstracting and summarizing articles; conducting a formal and historical analysis of the masterpieces of the studied era; discussing the global heritage of the Renaissance in the round table sessions. The combination of traditional methods of studying a foreign language and creative innovations in the development of the Renaissance theme makes the course interesting and productive. Employing the toolkit aimed at studying Renaissance in a foreign language tends to create favorable conditions that motivate students to obtain both a professionally oriented language and in-depth knowledge of art history enabling universities to train experts who will be able to respond to the challenges of the time.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the challenges of using Content and Language Integrated Learning while developing language proficiency in the Bachelor’s degree program of “Art History” and “Museology and perseverance of cultural and natural heritage objects”. This type of educating implies getting knowledge in the sphere of future profession (“History of World Art” subject in particular) concurrently with studying a foreign language. Here the foreign language is considered to be a means of education but not a purpose of it. Many advantages of this technique usage are evident: it is more natural way of communication, which helps to realize the peculiarities of the other culture, to solve professionally-oriented cases, to navigate in the information and communication space. Specialists-to-be in the field of Art History acquire and improve the skills of foreign language communication while working with the educational materials which allow them to be confident in using these skills in the professional sphere. The practice of using Content and Language Integrated Learning is analyzed by the example of the “New Insights into Art History: from Prehistoric to Medieval” course book. Basing on the knowledge acquired while working thoroughly with the authentic texts and video resources, students do their case-studies in the particular field and it allows them to work like using the foreign language in the real professional atmosphere.

Abstract:Through nearly 30 years of efforts, a four-volume History of Greek Philosophy written by three generations of Chinese scholars has been completed. The newly published volume focuses on Greek and Roman philosophy after Aristotle, including Stoicism, Epicureans, Skepticism, Neo-Platonism and the early Christian thought influenced by Greek philosophy. Based on the studies of western scholars, the history writing of late Greek philosophy with the characteristics of Chinese cultural background should straighten out the following problems or relations: 1. late Greek philosophy and the context of Mediterranean culture; 2. schools of philosophers and philosophy beyond school; 3. late Greek philosophy and the former two phases; 4. Electicism and the features of Roman culture; 5. oriental civilization and its reversed impact on Greek and Roman culture or the contention between "Athens and Jerusalem"; 6. interpretation of the late Greek philosophy against the background of Chinese culture.

Abstract:Literature and History are two branches closely related to each other. Literature has always been the tool of bringing out the outcry of the oppressed class of people whose histories were little known of. History was never real. It is just the manipulation of facts and events by those holding thresholds of power in the society, in order to maintain their unquestionable power over those people subjugated by them. But still the manipulation of histories can be understood by a parallel study of a non-historical text published during the same period, which is brought out in the theory of New Historicism. In a similar way the historical texts written during the period of the American Civil war will bring out the pain and suffering of the oppressed, the blacks in the hands of the subjugators, the whites in a more sophisticated way. But the exact pain of not only the blacks but also the mulattoes can be studied in the light of another text. In this research, the literary text employed is Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Thus the exact history of a period can be learned, not only by means of a history text, but also by means of a literary novel and even be visualized in the form of a movie.

Abstract:RELEVANCE. The problem of studying the relationship between the originality of Russian culture and the degree of foreign influence on its development is currently acquiring significant relevance. At the same time, the culturological approach, which describes the development of domestic social thought in the paradigm of “progressive – reactionary”, “ours – not ours,” gives way to an analysis of the specifics of the Russian reality of culture as an object of transfer, adaptation and reception of ideas and concepts taking place at different stages of social development. and reception of ideas and concepts taking place at different stages of social development. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively characterize the publishing business and the sale of literature in Russian and foreign languages in the first quarter of the 18th century. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In our opinion, for a comprehensive study of the problem of modernization in Russia in the 18th century, it is necessary to take into account hidden factors that reveal the experience of transmitting Western ideas. The most important of them include the practice of distributing European literature, which ensures the formation of a certain cultural environment. RESULT AND DISCUSSION. Purchasing foreign publications from foreigners living in Russia became an extremely common practice. It was in this way that the “Universal and Historical Lexicon” in German arrived in the library of Peter I. The autocrat personally ordered the purchase of this publication from foreign guests of St. Petersburg and a Russian translation of this work. Those books that could not be purchased personally were purchased by enterprising readers in the Baltic states or ordered from abroad through foreign merchants and Russian travelers. CONCLUSION. A study of the issues of book printing and book sales of Peter the Great’s time shows the enormous importance of published literature for the dissemination of progressive ideas and scientific knowledge in all layers of reading society. In a short period of time, Peter I was able to organize the production of a huge number of printed works and create conditions for their distribution throughout the country.

Abstract:The Soviet Union produced a large amount of literature with a historical sweep.This essay examines three main types of history constructed in literature of the Soviet Union,namely mainstream history,authorial history,and textual history.Mainstream history constructs a particular version of reality from the dominant perspective and reflects the interest of the ruling class.Authorial history goes beyond the mainstream history by offering alternative interpretations that challenge the existing ideology.However,in those works,too much authorial involvement restricts the reader's evaluation and sets limits on what a literary text provokes.The third type emphasizes the importance of language in the construction and apprehension of the past.Seeing literary texts as an aesthetic and metaphorical expression of individual experiences,those writers critically interrogate history and weave that interrogation into the texture of the historical writing.
