Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively considered as one of the most promising types of porous and crystalline organic-inorganic materials, thanks to their large specific surface area, high porosity, tailorable structures and compositions, diverse functionalities, and well-controlled pore/size distribution. However, most developed MOFs are in powder forms, which still have some technical challenges, including abrasion, dustiness, low packing densities, clogging, mass/heat transfer limitation, environmental pollution, and mechanical instability during the packing process, that restrict their applicability in industrial applications. Therefore, in recent years, attention has focused on techniques to convert MOF powders into macroscopic materials like beads, membranes, monoliths, gel/sponges, and nanofibers to overcome these challenges.Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has achieved much interest because it can produce many high-resolution macroscopic frameworks with complex shapes and geometries from digital models. Therefore, this review summarizes the combination of different 3D printing strategies with MOFs and MOF-based materials for fabricating 3D-printed MOF monoliths and their environmental applications, emphasizing water treatment and gas adsorption/separation applications. Herein, the various strategies for the fabrication of 3D-printed MOF monoliths, such as direct ink writing, seed-assisted in-situ growth, coordination replication from solid precursors, matrix incorporation, selective laser sintering, and digital light processing, are described with the relevant examples. Finally, future directions and challenges of 3D-printed MOF monoliths are also presented to better plan future trajectories in the shaping of MOF materials with improved control over the structure, composition, and textural properties of 3D-printed MOF monoliths.

Abstract:This review explores metal‐organic framework and covalent organic (COF) framework (COFMOF) hybrid materials, discussing design, synthesis, and applications. It covers synthesis approaches: MOF‐first, COF‐first, and post‐synthetic linkage. Evaluations include contaminant sensing, adsorptive removal, and catalytic photodegradation potential. The study highlights the challenges and prospects of these hybrids for advanced wastewater treatment. Recent advances in ordered porous materials, including metal‐organic (MOF) and covalent organic frameworks (COF), are set to revolutionize the strategies used for wastewater treatment. This is attributed to the large surface area, high crystallinity, structural tunability, thermal and chemical stability, and well‐defined structures of MOF and COF. Despite the distinctive properties exhibited by the single system (either MOF or COF), the combination of COF and MOF, as a hybrid construct, offers a remarkable opportunity to achieve superior functionality and performance. The favorable features of COF–MOF hybrids in different wastewater treatment sectors have opened new venues for effective environmental remediation. This review presents the state‐of‐the‐art design, synthesis, and application of COF–MOF hybrids. The synthesis principles, including MOF‐first, COF‐first, and post‐synthetic linkage of pre‐synthesized COFs and MOFs are summarized. The potential of these novel materials is evaluated by considering contaminant sensing, adsorptive removal, and catalytic photodegradation.The conclusion is drawn by assessing the existing hurdles and potential opportunities in the development of COF‐MOF hybrids as an innovative yet viable approach for addressing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanostructured polycrystalline materials where metal particles or groups are connected by an organic substituent, known as a 'strut' or 'crosslinks' having large surface area, high permeability, adjustable porosity, and flexible performance. Understanding the interactions and arrangement of MOFs is crucial for efficiently and precisely developing high-performance materials for sustainable applications. In recent years, there has been significant research interest in MOFs as a highly adaptable material for developing renewable and alternative energy conservation and transformation technologies, addressing global pollution and the impending fuel issue. This article provides an overview of the synthesis methods, parameters and characteristics of materials related to MOFs. It also assesses the relationship between the structure and functionality, examining factors that can be manipulated to improve their photocatalytic activity. Various examples were used to classify and examine the practical uses of MOFs, providing researchers with a new viewpoint on the compositional interaction in materials using MOFs. Finally, this study comprehensively analyzes the emerging trends and unresolved challenges in MOFs research across various functionalities.

Abstract:Rapid development and improvement of energy-related materials is required to address the ever-growing increase in energy demand around the world. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials, composed of metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. This class of inorganic-organic hybrid materials has attracted immense attention due to their high surface area, structure tunability, highly ordered pores, and uniform metal sites. Possessing these properties allows MOFs to be applied in many fields, including batteries, catalysis, carbon captures, utilization and storage, and wastewater treatments. Its popularity as an emerging material is further enhanced through its facile yet efficient synthesis methods (e.g., hydro/solvothermal, sol-gel, and electrochemical processes) that merit high product yield. Beyond crystalline MOFs, noncrystalline MOFs such as amorphous MOFs, MOF liquids, and MOF glasses have been reported and reviewed.

Abstract:Contaminants in drinking water can cause several health issues. In this study, solution cast technology was used to create polycaprolactone (PCL) or graphene nanocomposite membranes with diameters ranging from 2 to 6 m. The industry of water purification has benefited greatly from the use of membrane separation processes. The membranes are also made of biocompatible, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly materials. We utilized PCL polymer solution that was dissolved in chloroform to create membranes, and we added graphene to the PCL polymer solution. Quantum espresso software was used to determine the band structure, DOS, and Fermi-energy. The results of this study's inducible tests suggested that solution-cast PCL and polycaprolactone or graphene membranes might be a good choice for removing waste from water. According to the biological sensing component (enzymes, antibodies, entire cells, aptamers, tissues, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and DNA) or transducers (optical, electrochemical, piezoelectric, and thermal), biosensors are analytical devices. The transducer produces a signal corresponding to the concentration of the analyte when the target analyte interacts with the biological sensing component. A signal processor is used to boost the signal and display it. The industrial utilizations of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been a growing area of interest in recent years. Researchers are exploring the use of MOFs in various industrial applications such as gas storage, catalysis, drug delivery, and sensing.

Abstract:The development of porous organic polymers, specifically covalent organic frameworks (COFs), has facilitated the advancement of numerous applications. Nevertheless, the limited availability of COFs solely in powder form imposes constraints on their potential applications. Furthermore, it is worth noting that COFs tend to undergo aggregation, leading to a decrease in the number of active sites available within the material. This work presents a comprehensive methodology for the transformation of a COF into three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds using the technique of 3D printing. As part of the 3D printing process, a composite material called CelloCOF was created by combining cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), sodium alginate, and COF materials (i.e., COF-1 and COF-2). The intervention successfully mitigated the agglomeration of the COF nanoparticles, resulting in the creation of abundant active sites that can be effectively utilized for adsorption purposes. The method of 3D printing can be described as a simple and basic procedure that can be adapted to accommodate hierarchical porous materials with distinct micro- and macropore regimes. This technology demonstrates versatility in its use across a range of COF materials. The adsorption capacities of 3D CelloCOF materials were evaluated for three different adsorbates: carbon dioxide (CO2), heavy metal ions, and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The results showed that the materials exhibited adsorption capabilities of 19.9, 7.4-34, and 118.5-410.8 mg/g for CO2, PFOS, and heavy metals, respectively. The adsorption properties of the material were found to be outstanding, exhibiting a high degree of recyclability and exceptional selectivity. Based on our research findings, it is conceivable that the utilization of custom-designed composites based on COFs could present new opportunities in the realm of water and air purification.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are achieving unprecedented progress in scientific research for their attractive properties. However, MOFs’ disadvantages, including poor processibility, low chemical stability and limited mechanical properties, have prevented their widespread application. Printing techniques with advantages such as geometric controllability, rapid prototyping, and sustainable manufacturing can effectively address these problems of MOFs. Up to now, MOF-integrated printed devices have made significant breakthroughs and progress. This article provides the latest progress in MOF-integrated printed devices. First, the commonly used printing techniques for MOF-based device fabrication are summarized. Then, the important achievements made in MOF-based printed device fabrication and applications of these fabricated devices are highlighted. Finally, major challenges and potential research frontiers of MOF-integrated printed devices are proposed.

Abstract:The increasing levels of water pollution pose an imminent threat to human health and the environment. Current modalities of wastewater treatment necessitate expensive instrumentation and generate large amounts of waste, thus failing to provide ecofriendly and sustainable solutions for water purification. Over the years, novel additive manufacturing technology, also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, has propelled remarkable innovation in different disciplines owing to its capability to fabricate customized geometric objects rapidly and cost-effectively with minimal byproducts and hence undoubtedly emerged as a promising alternative for wastewater treatment. Especially in membrane technology, 3D printing enables the designing of ultrathin membranes and membrane modules layer-by-layer with different morphologies, complex hierarchical structures, and a wide variety of materials otherwise unmet using conventional fabrication strategies. Extensive research has been dedicated to preparing membrane spacers with excellent surface properties, potentially improving the membrane filtration performance for water remediation. The revolutionary developments in membrane module fabrication have driven the utilization of 3D printing approaches toward manufacturing advanced membrane components, including biocarriers, sorbents, catalysts, and even whole membranes. This perspective highlights recent advances and essential outcomes in 3D printing technologies for wastewater treatment. First, different 3D printing techniques, such as material extrusion, selective laser sintering (SLS), and vat photopolymerization, emphasizing membrane fabrication, are briefly discussed. Importantly, in this Perspective, we focus on the unique 3D-printed membrane modules, namely, feed spacers, biocarriers, sorbents, and so on. The unparalleled advantages of 3D printed membrane components in surface area, geometry, and thickness and their influence on antifouling, removal efficiency, and overall membrane performance are underlined. Moreover, the salient applications of 3D printing technologies for water desalination, oil-water separation, heavy metal and organic pollutant removal, and nuclear decontamination are also outlined. This Perspective summarizes the recent works, current limitations, and future outlook of 3D-printed membrane technologies for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential applications in removing pollutants such as heavy metals, oils, and toxins from water. However, due to the intrinsic fragility of MOFs and their fine powder form, there are still technical barriers to their practical application such as blockage of pipes, difficulty in recovery, and potential environmental toxicity. Therefore, attention has focused on approaches to convert nanocrystalline MOFs into macroscopic materials to overcome these limitations. Recently, strategies for shaping MOFs into beads (0D), nanofibers (1D), membranes (2D), and gels/sponges (3D) with macrostructures are developed including direct mixing, in situ growth, or deposition of MOFs with polymers, cotton, foams or other porous substrates. In this review, successful strategies for the fabrication of macroscopic materials from MOFs and their applications in removing pollutants from water including adsorption, separation, and advanced oxidation processes, are discussed. The relationship between the macroscopic performance and the microstructure of materials, and how the range of 0D to 3D macroscopic materials can be used for water treatment are also outlined.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are constituting two new classes of highly crystalline advanced permeable materials that have purchased significant courtesy due to their incredible characteristic such as large surface area, highly ordered pores/channels, and controllable crystalline structure. However, the main hurdles to their various applications in photocatalytic activity and novel energy storage/conversion devices are their low structural stability and electrical conductivities. Therefore, substantial research has been directed to maximize their advantages and mitigate the shortcomings of these fascinating materials. In this review article, we first introduced the background and brief timeline of COF/MOF development and notable milestones followed by a systematic overview of the different synthetic procedures and recent achievements and milestones of their applications in CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and supercapacitors (SCs). Finally, the challenges and future perspectives on further developing high-performance COF/MOF materials for photocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage application are discussed.

Abstract:The development of materials and methods efficient for carbon capturing, methane storage, and selective separation of CO2 and CH4 from gas mixtures is a crucial approach to addressing the problems of these two greenhouse gases. In this regard, metal organic framework (MOF)-based composite materials are recognized as a promising class of materials, which could combine the advantages of MOFs and the other constituents to reduce their current drawbacks in the adsorption/separation systems. In this context, a series of MOF composites recently developed for CO2 and CH4 adsorption and their selective separation from gas mixtures are presented and discussed: MOF/carbon-based materials, MOF/Si-based composites, MOF mixed-matrix membranes, MOF/MOF, and MOF/metal oxide structures. Here, with an emphasis on the most recent signs of progress, we hope to shed a light on the MOF composites and assist future research to promote the performance of current composites and develop new MOF hybrid structures considering the proposed challenges.

Abstract:3D printing is recognized as a powerful tool to develop complex geometries for a variety of materials including nanocellulose. Herein, a one-pot synthesis of 3D printable hydrogel ink containing zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) anchored on anionic 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxylradical-mediated oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) is presented. The synthesis approach of ZIF-8@TOCNF (CelloZIF8) hybrid inks is simple, fast (approximate to 30 min), environmentally friendly, takes place at room temperature, and allows easy encapsulation of guest molecules such as curcumin. Shear thinning properties of the hybrid hydrogel inks facilitate the 3D printing of porous scaffolds with excellent shape fidelity. The scaffolds show pH controlled curcumin release. The synthesis route offers a general approach for metal-organic frameworks (MOF) processing and is successfully applied to other types of MOFs such as MIL-100 (Fe) and other guest molecules as methylene blue. This study may open new venues for MOFs processing and its large-scale applications.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention in numerous applications. However, conventional processing methods limit the application performance of most MOFs and their related derivatives due to their unoptimized form. This minireview explores how 3D printing has provided MOFs with hierarchical structures that help to improve their performances for various applications. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention in numerous applications due to their large surface areas, tunable pore size, and chemical versatility. However, the performance of most MOFs and their related derivatives in applications are still hindered due to their unoptimized form. Hierarchical nano‐micromacropore MOF structure constructed by 3D printing has been shown to guide working species transportation routes, accelerates ion transportation, and increases the accessible area of MOF, thus leading to improved kinetics and enhanced application performances. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a review on 3D‐printed MOFs and their applications that summarizes and promotes this field's progress. This review first introduces the progress of preparing and embedding MOF into structures via 1) MOF coating processes, 2) in situ growth of MOFs, and 3) using presynthesized MOFs to tune the nano‐ and microstructure of MOF. Subsequently, based on various 3D printing technologies, the principles behind various feedstock material preparation and their related printing processes are discussed with respect to the macrostructure. Thereafter, the advances and recent progress of various devices by 3D‐printed MOFs are summarized with detailed analyses and discussion. Finally, an outlook in this promising field is proposed to provide a progression route for 3D‐printed MOFs.

With the development of synthesis techniques between MOFs and COFs over the past several years, MOF/COF composites prepared by combining MOFs and COFs have become an emerging class of porous hybrid materials. Herein, we first comprehensive summarize advanced strategies for synthesizing MOF/COF composites. Then, the emerging applications of MOF/COF composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (membrane separation, sensing and sample pretreatment) and other fields (catalysis and energy storage). Last, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of MOF/COF composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more MOF/COF composites with excellent properties.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emergent group of crystalline porous materials that have gained incredible interest in recent years. With foreseeable controllable functionalities and structural configurations, the constructions and catalytic properties of these organic polymeric materials can be controlled to fabricate targeted materials. The specified monomer linkers and pre-designed architecture of COFs facilitate the post-synthetic modifications for introducing novel functions and useful properties. By virtue of inherent porosity, robust framework, well-ordered geometry, functionality, higher stability, and amenability to functionalization, COFs and COFs-based composites are regarded as prospective nanomaterials for environmental clean-up and remediation. This report spotlights the state-of-the-art advances and progress in COFs-based materials to efficiently mitigate pharmaceutical-based environmental pollutants from aqueous solutions. Synthesis approaches, structure, functionalization, and sustainability aspects of COFs are discussed. Moreover, the adsorptive and photocatalytic potential of COFs and their derived nanocomposites for removal and degradation of pharmaceuticals are thoroughly vetted. In addition to deciphering adsorption mechanism/isotherms, the stability, regeneratability and reproducibility are also delineated. Lastly, the outcomes are summed up, and new directions are proposed to widen the promise of COF-based smart materials in diverse fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanoporous carbon materials have attracted significant interest due to their advantages of controllable porosity, good thermal/chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, catalytic activity, easy modification with other elements and materials, etc. Thus, MOF-derived carbons have been used in numerous applications, such as environmental remediations, energy storage systems (i.e. batteries, supercapacitors), and catalysts. To date, many strategies have been developed to enhance the properties and performance of MOF-derived carbons. Herein, we introduce and summarize recent important approaches for advanced MOF-derived carbon structures with a focus on precursor control, heteroatom doping, shape/orientation control, and hybridization with other functional materials.

Abstract:This review covers in detail the different strategies to integrate metal‐organic framework (MOF) materials into nanofibers via electrospinning, including the direct electrospinning of MOF‐polymer solutions and surface decoration of nanofibers with MOFs. In addition, different morphologies of MOF nanofibers and their application in various water treatment approaches, such as adsorption, catalytic degradation, and membrane filtration for removing emerging contaminants, are outlined in detail. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous organic‐inorganic hybrid materials, have shown great potential for water and wastewater treatment applications. However, pure MOF powders have limited practical applications in water treatment due to their insolubility, poor processability, brittleness, safety hazard from dust formation, and difficult separation from aqueous solutions. Thus, exploring potential MOFs composites with improved separation performance is of great importance. The marriage of MOFs with electrospun nanofiber with forethought into the final product's morphology, structure, and chemistry has opened up new opportunities for efficient wastewater treatment. The present review exhaustively summarizes the strategies to integrate MOFs into nanofibers via electrospinning to remove various pollutants (i.e., organic dyes, heavy metal ions, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, oily compounds, organic solvents, etc.) via adsorption, photodegradation, and membrane filtration. Besides, the most recent advances of electrospun MOF nanofibers for wastewater treatment and their current challenges and future outlook are delineated.

Abstract:Recent advancements in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) underscore their significant potential in chemical and materials research, owing to their remarkable properties and diverse structures. Despite challenges like intrinsic brittleness, powdered crystalline nature, and limited stability impeding direct applications, MOF-based aerogels have shown superior performance in various areas, particularly in water treatment and contaminant removal. This review highlights the latest progress in MOF-based aerogels, with a focus on hybrid systems incorporating materials like graphene, carbon nanotube, silica, and cellulose in MOF aerogels, which enhance their functional properties. The manifold advantages of MOF-based aerogels in energy storage, adsorption, and catalysis are discussed, with an emphasizing on their improved stability, processability, and ease of handling. This review aims to unlock the potential of MOF-based aerogels and their real-world applications. Aerogels are expected to reshape the technological landscape of MOFs through enhanced stability, adaptability, and efficiency.
